Book Description
The Straight Truck Driver Handbook/Workbook and ancillaries provide a comprehensive, turn-key curriculum for preparing younger readers for a career in the trucking industry. Trucks are the major mode of transporting goods in a constantly growing US economy and as a result, there is an ever-growing shortage of qualified truck drivers. On any given day of the week, the 1.4 million truck fleets in the US suffer from a shortage of 300,000 drivers and these companies are anxious to find good, qualified drivers to deliver their goods. This book not only prepares new drivers to fulfill these positions successfully, but the book and its ancillaries represent the first such curriculum of its nature offered in the US and Canada.
Book Description
MikWright . . . Family Style seeks to follow in the footsteps of the overwhelming success achieved by its four predecessors by being bigger and better. In a style that remains unmatched, the MikWright group attaches irreverent prose with an in-your-face attitude to traditional family photos (which are quite entertaining themselves). This time around, MikWright . . . Family Style highlights some of the people in the photographs through stories and quips penned with the biting wit that has given this series of books its own distinctive brand of humor.
Customer Reviews:
Life from a different angle.......2005-07-19
The Mikwright books like this take a photo from a normal aspect of life and add their own their own commentary to it from a point of view that is just a little bit different from the rest of the world. It makes for some great fun and very entertaining reading. It's perfect for the quick occasional mindless break. An excellent bathroom book - though when you hear your guests laughing out load when they are in there, you will probably wonder what else they might really be up to.
A Shocking Look at Old Snapshots.......2003-01-25
...
"Did we really look like that?"
When family gathers around old snapshots it's a comment you're sure to hear. Here we have a fat little paperback (pages unnumbered) chock full of old photos that look much like the ones from your own album. Each has an explanation or a memory from the author's families so it's sort of a memoir gone mad.
In the acknowledgment the reader is assured that these anecdotes contain "flagrant exaggerations and distorted facts" as a trio of humorists, identified only as Tim, Phyllis and Bob, share their family secrets. And, though lampooned, the reader is aware that this zany family is also loved and perhaps a whole lot less dysfunctional than many.
In addition to the little yarns explaining each picture, there is often a sassy blurb in the tradition of your decades-old high school yearbook with a little more spice that would have been...er..ahem...appropriate in the 50s.
This book will make a great gift for someone who needs to loosen up a bit, laugh more, get on with it, for gawd's sake. Wait! Don't give it away yet! Read it first! I'm sure this trio of nuts will have no objections at all to their book doing double duty.
Roaringly funny, holiday gatherings at their most hilarious.......2002-03-23
I bought this book for a friend, but before I sent it off, me and my entire family managed to flip through all the pages and we all roared. Mikrights, Family Style is in the same style of the other MikWright books- old black and white photos with captions. The sass, witt and sheer humor in the captions, as well as the pictures, will get anyone with a remote sense of humor to laugh. Everyone's experienced at least 1 similar scene or character with their family- the glares after long standing fights, the oddball aunt in her even stranger dress striking a pose for the camera, etc. You've really got to see it to fully grasp the genius of Tim Mikkelsen!
Take a minute and find the book in your store's Humor section, if you don't buy it, at least you will be amused!

Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but disappointing.......2007-04-02
I think I've figured out why I found this book disappointing: it's not worthy of the works of Becker and Fagen. SD fans are a discriminating bunch, especially those of us who continued to follow them through the years. When we see a book with this title, we expect something pretty substantial, and this doesn't quite cut it. I devoured it, of course, being the SD fanatic I am, and enjoyed it, but even as I was devouring it, I couldn't help but notice: 1) a sometimes-amateurish writing style; and 2) a less-than-penetrating intelligence at work.
Then there's the fact that, as a musician, I'm really more interested in the music than the lyrics. I would have preferred less analysis of the lyrics (which, frankly, aren't always worth the bother of analysis) and more about the music and the musicians who made it. (Sure, SD's lyrics are several cuts above the norm, but even they have admitted that often they were more concerned with coming up with words that SOUNDED right with the music, and not all that concerned that they made a lot of sense.)
So, again, not a bad book, but the field is wide open for somebody to come along and write a definitive "Complete Guide."
Interesting but questionable........2007-03-16
I bought the book, one: because I am a die hard Steely Dan fan, and two: it got me over the $25.00 mark to get free shipping, so I said what the heck. The author is on the mark on some things and on others I am amazed at his pomposity at writing as if he had been a fly on the wall while Becker and Fegan wrote some songs thiry plus years ago. Conjecture and fact are definitely blurred, but for the money it was a fun quick read.
A Superb Guide.......2007-02-17
I liked this book, read it all in one evening. I recommend it heartily.
But, what gives, Omnibus Press, with the format? Was a working title for this Complete Guide series "the Complete Tiny Pocket Guide?" This is a mass-market paperback, sure, and not an exquisite leather-bound library volume, but why so small? Saving on paper stock and materials? And why when I open it up is the print so tiny? I mean, I'm a slowly aging hipster like most SD fans, but we're talking some seriously small print here. Note to editor: up-size future editions.
Author Brian Sweet knows his subject, his tiny bio on the back cover saying he's written the only SD bio in print and is an SD archivist and collector. I liked his smooth and familiar writing style, easy to read.
This book is the 2004 update to the original 1998 printing. This book goes up to Fagen's Kamakiriad, but doesn't cover Morph the Cat.
As others have made clear, this book is not really a complete guide. It's got all of the albums, in order, and track titles, but no full lyrics sheet. No full formal bios of exactly who did what on each track, but more than enough narrative on the principal musicians, especially the soloists. You've got a comprehensive vinyl and CD discography, with full catalog numbers, to include re-issues. And more than anything, every album track has its own paragraph. "Showbiz Kids," "Kid Charlemagne," "Peg," and "Gaucho" seem to get the longest write-ups, but without spoiling things that doesn't mean that author Sweet necessarily says these are the greatest-ever SD recordings. Some of my favorite tracks got disappointingly short attention, but Sweet was not dismissive of any of the work--he's a massive fan, and it shows.
I liked the chronological format, from Can't Buy A Thrill thru Everything Must Go. But wait, there's more! You get a rundown of Fagen's and Becker's solo projects, then following sections entitled "Miscellaneous/Compilations," "Early Material," "Live Albums," and finally "Outside Projects," outlining what Becker and Fagen do when they're not being SD (to include a list of Water Becker productions).
There's a nice intro on the front end, and a poorly executed index in the back. It's really a song index, that's all. These days, when all book drafts are digital, how hard is it to execute a comprehensive index? Especially given all of the locations, studio names, and musicians listed here, a real index would be some serious value-added for a small amount of effort and cost. Note to editor: do a proper index for the next edition.
The book reads easily and quickly, moving fast through a general introduction of each album, then notes on each track. You get details on producers and techs, musicians per track, and interesting philosophical and background snippets, such as how lyrics came to be, and where song ideas originated. You get the words to the repeating chorus of "Showbiz Kids," the meaning of "squonk," which song is a "love dope triangle," and which song is SD's "Stairway to Heaven," among a host of other delightful tidbits.
My favorite bits were the almost toss-off comments Sweet made about specific tracks, like saying how you never want "Black Cow" to end, or how Becker "decorates [What A Shame About Me] with serpentine bass lines and guitar noodles." As a fan reading the book, it was nice to read the compliments and enthusiasm of Sweet as another fan, and a seriously knowledgeable one at that.
And photos. There are two sets of photos, with a total of 29, which include color repros of all of the mainstream SD albums as well as disc 1 of Citizen Steely Can, Alive in America, Android Warehouse, and the Steely Dan Story, 1972-1980. There is a surprisingly good quotient of color photos, and they are good quality, glossy on good paper. Good on you, Omnibus, for decent photos.
Bottom Line: If you really dig Steely Dan and want to get to know a little bit more about how the band and the music came to be, this is a perfect way to do so. You can jump right to your favorite albums and tracks, and read up on how they came to be, what they were based on, what that instrument is in the right speaker background, and just what in the world they were saying in the board fade. Or you can read it chronologicaly and get the band's story as well as that of their magniificent work. This book is a great reference for the price, and is small and highly portable to boot.
Not quite what I expected.......2007-01-31
This is not quite a 'complete guide' to Steely Dan's music. It does cover all of their songs and albums up to the pub date but I was hoping it would reveal the hidden meaning of many of the songs. It does for many but for many more it simply describes the musician who performed the more difficult or unusual piece within the song with no mention of intent or meaning (perceived or real). This is still a must get for Steely Dan fans but it is not quite as much as it could be. On the other hand it is a tiny, concise little thing and it IS about Steely Dan so what more can you say?
Every Steely Dan song treated like it's something special!.......2007-01-25
As a huge Steely Dan fan, I was happy to see someone cover all of their songs in detail. The book covers the material chronologically, from the first album (Can't Buy A Thrill, 1972) up to the most recent, and possibly, last album (Everything Must Go, 2003). There is even an explanation of mysterious/unintelligible lyrics (the opening chorus from the song "Show Biz Kids") and a section on what Fagan and Becker were doing during their 20 year album hiatus (between 1980's "Gaucho" and 1999's "Two Against Nature"). Also covered are Fagan's solo albums (The Nightfly, 1982; Kamikiriad, 1993) and Becker's 11 Tracks of Whack (1993). I feel this book is the perfect compliment to Steely Dan's musical library!

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-09-10
This book has helped me understand babies and become more of a father figure. I recomend this to anyone who is to soon become a father.
Must read for expecting dads.......2006-11-05
This book targets guys and their way of thinking really well as it gets to the point and includes a lot of practical pointers for everything from pregnancy to all the changes that occur after the baby is born. My husband has volunteered information he has learned from this book and is reading it of his own volition.
Informative and helpful for first time dads.......2006-05-08
My partner is a savvy, well informed kind of guy. I had some fear that he would think this book was lame or at least unhelpful when I gave it to him when we were a couple months pregnant. He read the book and sang its praises for the practical ideas and advice it gave for dads to help mom in pregnancy and things to do with the baby when he/she arrives. It's not just pregnancy or baby focused, but includes ideas and activities for dad throughout baby and childhood.
accessible guide to responsible fatherhood.......2004-11-21
The author is a father of two sons and a child-center volunteer, but this book is not just one random guy's ruminations on how to be a better father. The author is also an experienced book editor, and he uses those skills to blend the experiences of nearly 50 other fathers of various backgrounds as he compiles this almanac of observations and seasoned advice.
The style is matter-of-fact yet sympathetic; pragmatic, down-to-earth, and engaging. The content is fair and balanced, offering varying points of view on many details of child-rearing, and does not preach. And while fairly nuanced in this way, on the other hand, it's not wishy-washy and "anything goes" about things -- it's also crisply authoritative in areas where there is just one no-nonsense way to go. E.g., the dangers of older cribs and the maximum recommended gaps between slats, or other safety issues not really open to much experimentation.
Overall though, the book is refreshingly descriptive rather than prescriptive. It's a nice mix of specific, often creative suggestions along with a general philosophy of caring, healthy, and personally appropriate/satisfying fatherhood.
The Almanac will make an excellent gift for fathers of newborns or young children -- up to approximately kindergarten, I'd say, although some of the material is appropriate for even slightly older children too.
Note: although even the more recent edition feels slightly dated simply because the pictures are old, the material itself is all still relevant as far as I could tell.
ONLY THE BEST ON THE MARKET.......2000-08-27
I raised my daughter by this book, and then gave it away to a young father who has raised his son on it. I am an Infant/Toddler teacher and am familiar with very very many many books for parents ... and as far as I am concerned this is only the best book of its kind on the market for fathers.

Sheri Grace MS. Ed........2007-07-09
Both of my sons have benefited from Angel Bear Yoga, though they were 7 and 10. This is a program that I would recommend to others, both parents and educators based on my experiences as a parent, Special Educator and Parent Educator.
Children are excited and interested in the poses and story and during this experience, the stage is well set for future discussion of values and attitudes in a way that is appropriate for young children. In addition, the program improves physical fitness and coordination and successfully provides an outlet for physical energy and movement that children need. For parents, Angel Bear Yoga provides a wonderful opportunity to share time and love with their childeren.
Mother and Yoga instructor.......2007-06-21
Christi Eley has created a wonderful and unique yoga program for children. Her Angel Bear Yoga program uses an adventursome storytelling approach to not only teach fun and healthy yoga poses, but also to teach children about positive character traits and and how all things in nature reflect back to character. This program truly nutures the child's spirit. The Angel Bear Adventure stories CD is great for relaxation and quiet time at the end of the yoga session. My 4 year old loves doing Angel Bear Yoga. As a yoga instructor, I will soon be adding Angel Bear Yoga classes to my class schedule so that I can share the program with other children. I recommend Angel Bear Yoga to both parents and teachers. The program is easy to follow and fun to teach. The main lesson book and other accessories provide you with everything you need to teach the program even if you have little or no previous yoga experience.

Customer Reviews:
Provides a solid overview of JDE.......2001-06-05
The book provides a great background for the JDE newcomer. The book has sections that are good for the executive sponsor and transitions into detail good for those actually integrating. While not something that would ensure a successful implementation, the book covers a significant number of key issues and risks that should help companies through the implementation process.
Acceptable introductory textbook.......2001-04-01
I was frankly expecting more of this book. The author superficially covers the basics of the OneWorld software architecture and the very basic of navigation and usage. Being titled "Implementing", I was expecting to find real life information on hardware sizing, what to do and not to do to successfully implement the software. There was not much more than what you could find in J.D.Edwards documentation and available Knowledge Garden papers. Also, anybody who has worked with this software knows that there is still a lot to do to make it as reliable as marketing hype pretend it to be. One would expect some objectivity from a third party, as good as the software really is. Wise advices like waiting for implementing ESU and service pack, making sure you have the appropriate skills around to do an implementation are slipped away from the content. If you have not worked with OneWorld before, and are planning to learn and implement the software, this is an acceptable introductory textbook. However, if you are looking for more in-depth coverage of real life issues with this software, you will have to look some place else.
