The Secret City Finally Revealed........2005-08-23
In September, 1952, 'The Antioch Review, published an article called 'Acorns to Atoms' written by Clifford Seeber. It was later released in booklet form; he was a native Oak Ridger who took up for the reputaiton of his birthplace, saying it wasn't "inhabited by ignorant hill-billies" just because it was fill with Oak trees (acorns). The fertile valleys produced "better families;" the ridges were full of scrubby oak and "poor whites."
The Oak Ridge lab (part of the Manhattan Project to develop an atomic bomb) was mainly an assembly line. The workers had no idea what they were doing. Many thought they were producing ice cream sticks and for lollypop novelties. They were exposed to dangerous livels of radioactivity and harmful chemicals which caused many deaths among the government workers. They were pressured to produce materials for the bomb, often overriding safety considerations.
Most of the workers were brought in to this "secret, hidden" city (really a very small concentration camp in extremely primitive living conditions) from other places; very few natives were used in this experimental phase which needed discreet and competent people to do dangerous occupations without inquiring the nature of their work. When workers or their families became ill, there was no extended family nosing around. Leaks of the radioactivity uranium and plutonium came all the way over on the wind to Knoxville, causing all kinds of cancer.
At my neighborhood school, we had to wear dog tags like soliders in battle wore in case of chemical extermination or serious leaks. We had drills on crawling under our school desks in case we were bombed like London. We didn't question why anyone would want to eradicate this town, even a country school, as we had no knowledge of bombs or hand-to-hand war. We hadn't been alive during the American Civil War.
The women workers of the '40s secret operation looked like computer operators of the first huge computers, a long way down the road of things to come. The survivors claim they knew nothing of what their jobs were; they just did what they were told to do.
A local columnist, Sam Venable, like funny incidents. He writes about the top-secret days of Oak Ridge; he relates how everyone back then had a 'pat' answer for strangers who asked too many questions. One Oak Ridge worker told people he was making "the front part of horses to be shipped to Washington, D.C. for assembly." Homer Rayburn was one of the earliest workers on the Manhattan Project and always told people he was making Popsicle sticks. Robert Dunlap told him about this humorous tale about the many beer joints along Clinton Highway; "One day, a stranger showed up. He sat down next to one fellow, bought him a beerm and started 'shooting the breeze.' Finally, he asked him "How many people work at Oak Ridge?" The local guy didn't fall for it. He just grinned that Knoxville grin and said, "About half of them."
They used local black men to do hard labor jobs and housed them in a type of barracks called hutments. They worked like dogs because the government pay was good but they paid with various health hazards, illnesses, even death.
The pictures are interesting, but ther was a large spread covering an entire news sections in the local Sunday edition of the News Sentinel with clearer and more precise photos. Also, a display was held at the Oak Ridge Space Museum for those with transportation to get there. Knoxville still does not like to admit that we had that danger on our doorstep, and yet we wer not told by the United States Government what was going on. It was a disaster waiting to happen.
It was shut down shortly after the bombs were dropped in Japan. Mission accomplished.

Book Description
This new history of trade unions offers the most concise and up-to-date account of three hundred years of trade union development, from the earliest documented attempts at collective action by working people in the eighteenth century through to the very different world of "New Unionism" and "New Labour" at the end of the millennium. The author treats trade unionism as an interaction of workers, employers and the state as they all faced changing economic and social expectations, changing markets and changing political perceptions. The book brings together the fruits of recent research which has moved away from studying the internal organization of trade unions to setting trade union developments alongside managerial demands, employers' organizations, technological developments and the role of the state.

The Best of the Series.......2003-03-04
This whole "Pocketful of Python" series strikes me as just a bit odd. Much of it was released to mark Monty Python's 30th Anniversary, and it seems like something of a cash-in. After all, it's just portions of other Python books crammed into several volumes in a slightly new way.
That said, I have gotten an awful lot of enjoyment from the series (hence the five star rating.) This is undoubtedly the best book of the series. Normally I'd just write about my favorites bits, but John Cleese's selection is so good I'll list them all.
African Notebook, Anne Elk's (Miss) Theory, Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson, Consulting Jean-Paul Sartre, Eric the Half a Bee, Fear No Man!, Jonah Gambolputty, Larch in Court, The Last Supper, Merchant Banker, Mollusks, Norman Henderson's Diary, History of Mankind Medallions, Oh Lord Please Don't Burn Us, Python Panel, Raymond Luxury Yacht, Sacred Castles, We Are Individuals, and Word Association Football.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT PICTURES AND REVIEWS.......2007-09-04
I WISH the publishers of this book would start thinking of doing another book like this one!!!! This was a GOOD ONE!!!
I really think this book is worth more than what you spend on it. Great pictures and information on music and so much more. All Bob's best pictures are not in this book, but it has many many VERY GOOD pictures. I only wish that a couple of pictures at the beginning of the book would not have been half on one page and half on another because they would be fit for framing, but I especially enjoyed the picture of Bob with the Beatles in the Fab Five photo--Really!!!! he is better looking than John and Paul!!!!--really!!! I never realized this back then because his face was covered with all that hair back in 1966. I was in my early and mid teens when I heard all his commercial songs along with all the others that were playing non-stop on the radio--in the car, at the pool-in-the-park I spent many summer days with friends, and I really liked his music very much and we all knew who he was certainly, but the first 45 I bought was Lay Lady Lay (lots of cool songs back then and lots of competition--but did you ever notice how short the songs were back then and how nice and long Bob Dylan's songs are!!!??). Unfortunately it was only recently that I discovered that most of his best work was hidden in albums I had not purchased at the time--forgive me "since 1964 fans"--I was young back then with too much going on all around me--the 60's were superpacked years. Now I have discovered much of his best music and have discovered that beneath all that 1966 hair was some gorgeous kiddo. This book has lots of gorgeous photos and some photos with his best-known girlfriends--one famous one less famous and one picture that really tugs at the heart--the one in which his girl fans in Ireland are right up close to their idol, Bob Dylan asking some questions.
Joan Baez looked so absolutely gorgeous back then and Suzy looked great and very much in love. Despite the heartaches that came in each of these lives, these were priceless years and these priceless moments are all caught on camera preserved for us to see.
There is much valuable information on the albums, songs and so much more.
How can you possibly go wrong with purchasing this book if you are in any way interested in Bob Dylan? You CANNOT possibly go wrong.
Buy This!.......2007-05-18
It's been no secret to my friends, family and children that I have been a fan of Bob Dylan since 1966.I love just about everything Dylan has written and sung and respect the man as a genius. When I purchased Dylan Visions,Portraits,And Back Pages I flipped. The series of articles spanning his career from Hibbing to the present moment are filled with some new information and compiled in chronological order, but what blew me away are the photos. Many of which we have seen before but many others that are spectacular. For instance Dylan looking intently upon a portrait of St. Peter in Washington,DC.Super photos from the Rolling Thunder Review.I am going to buy another copy of this book so that I can frame some of the pictures.Enjoy this book!
Pretty good book with great pictures and original people........2007-04-14
I love the fact that you can learn so much from this book. I am dissapointed though, in the fact it seems to be pieced together uncarefully. Great book. Worth the low Amazon price!
Not Needed If You Have Most Everything Dylan.......2007-01-09
Good for intro to Dylan or for the most basic Dylan fan - not for the hardcore. Beautiful pictures and some interesting articles but if you are a die-hard and have read/seen most everything published, nothing new here.
Must Have for any Bob Dylan Fan.......2006-08-20
Besides Chronicles and the Bob Dylan Scrapbook, this is by far one of the best books about Bob Dylan I have seen. It has a whole bunch of information that I haven't seen anywhere else and the pictures are amazing. I absolutley love this book and bought it just because of the reviews that I read on Amazon so I thought that I would praise this book as well because it truly is great.

lucky fluke.......2003-09-16
I read this book a few years ago. Of course it's more fun than science. A lot of the things he predicted didn't come true. But the stuff about clean foods and organic food were of a personal interest to me. When my mom kept raving about "Bread and Circus," her local natural food supermarket that had great produce, I found out it was owned by Whole Foods. Taking a chance, I invested. The stock has doubled. That trend, talked about in the book, was basically the entire reason I got the stock.
My review is a lot like this book. There is no guarantee it's going to work for you. There is no guarantee that if you buy a stock based on this book that the company won't go bankrupt tomorrow.
But look at another trend he talked about... "picture phones..." they are starting to be seen EVERYWHERE. Once the technology is common enough, you'll see them for cheaper. The thing is, the people who are investing in that trend have already made their money. You just have to buy the right stock and hope that it really catches fire.
My advice--earn money the old-fashioned way... through the long, slow process of conservative investment.
A Solid Effort!.......2001-06-02
Trends 2000 identifies investment opportunities that will help you profit in a future of global radiation poisoning, free, unlimited energy and "techno-tribes" of pioneers who have fled cities in search of safety and clean water. These predictions and many more are made so confidently by author Gerald Calente that he frequently writes of future events - like the creation of contained cold fusion - in the past tense. The book includes headlines and stories from the Associated Press and newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today to back up its bold prognostications. While shaded by his own political leanings, Calente does point out some disturbing trends, like the steady decay of the Russian nuclear power infrastructure. He also cites some trends that are truly thought-provoking, like the competitive advantage gained by the U.S. through the "English language monopoly" created by the rapid spread of its technology. We [...] recommend this book for investors, entrepreneurs and executives looking to identify overlooked trends in society and alternative views of the future.
Trends 2000 : How to Prepare for and Profit from the Changes.......2000-03-25
This book has some very insightful "Trendposts" as the author refers to them. One example was "the newfocus on health will become a powerful trend, creating both confusion and job opportunities: In response to an obvious and growing demand, a number of new professions will be creatd - among them, vitamin counselor.
Trends 200--A Must Read.......2000-02-29
As a radio talk show host I have interviewed over 1,000 authors and professionals. Gerry Celente is not only an exciting radio guest, but he has written what I believe to be one of the most important and dynamic books of the year. Trends 2000 is a blueprint for living in the 21st Century. Whether you're interested in the emerging job market, the economic shifts affecting the global society, the re-structuring of politics or the technological advances that will most affect us and our families, Trend 2000 is a must read. It is not surprising that Gerry Celente appears frequently on CNN and is in constant demand as a speaker at corporate meetings around the world. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to dig behind the headlines and evening news broadcasts to discover how to take advantage of the major shifts taking place both here and around the globe.
Boring!.......2000-01-24
I am a seventh grader and for my anual quarter book I had to read Trends 2000. My assignment was to read only four chapters of the book, in any area that I choose. But even four chapters of the book was very dull and I do not recomend anyone to read this book.

No math? Are you JOKING?.......2001-12-03
The reviewer who said this book has zero mathematical content must have a different definition of mathematics than I do. True, the book has no formulas, no algebra, no arithmetic, and very few numbers, but it's FULL of combinatorics and geometry, especially symmetry, dissections, and polyhedra. In a sense, this book is nothing BUT math!
If you're at all interested in mathematical puzzles, or symmetry, or geometry, or woodworking, you MUST buy this beautiful book! But if you're looking for a book of numbers and formulas, buy something else.
Good enough book, I suppose, but horrible misadvertised.......2000-07-27
This is a good book iff you're interested in puzzles as toys, or puzzles as art, or puzzles as anything other than a playground for mathematics. Even the recreational mathematician will be disappointed if he or she is hoping for much math content, because there's none whatsoever. And don't interpret "none" as "low level" or "elementary"; we're talking about the empty set here. The only reason I give 2 or 3 stars is that I'm sure the book would be useful to those wanting to see the designs of a number of different puzzles. It does that. It's more of a history and showcase. The author seems to make no pretense about the mathematical content, expect, perhaps, through the title, but the reviews I had read here at Amazon and elsewhere sure did lead me to expect good stuff. T'was a real disappointment.
An Excellent Resource.......2000-02-15
Has all the math you may need without getting bogged down in formulas. This CD is perfect for both a beginner or a seasoned pro of puzzle theory. This the best resource I have found to date for those interested in either puzzles or geometric studies for fun.
My favorite puzzle bock!!.......1999-05-07
This book opens up a whole world of possibilities for puzzle enthusiasts! It does a systematic break down of the ideas behind the design of burr puzzles, puzzles whose assembled interlocking pieces form ployhedra. It contains the most amazing puzzles of this sort I've ever seen. If you love puzzles, you'll love this book!!
This is the best book ever written on how to make puzzles........1998-08-10
Finally the best book ever written on how to make three dimensional wooden mechanical puzzles is again available. And the format of the CD makes it quite easy to find more than a hundred of Stewart Coffin's beautiful puzzles. The photographs, illustrations and drawings of the puzzles are a visual treat. And he even has information on the selection of wood and woodworking techniques for those that want to make the puzzles. Some of the puzzles can be made with simple hand tools and others require accurate power tools and advanced woodworking skills. But everyone will enjoy this classic book of polyhedral puzzles.

Customer Reviews:
Great for newbies to FCP.......2007-03-21
This book is well organized and easy for folks new to FCP. It has the basics and some advanced features. I had to learn FCP quickly as I was responsible for making my son's varsity basketball highlights video. The book covered file organization, how to insert video and stills into the timeline, add audio, make special scenes of B&W to color, slow motion, transitions, credits, and export the movie. The video was a hit. It was very gratifying to see the kids and parents reaction.
The Best General FCP 5 Book Available.......2007-03-17
I used to think the Apple training books were the best, but the HOT (Hands On Training) books, especially those authored by Larry Jordan, are even better. Mr. Jordan explains everything with such ease that it put other authors to shame. And the graphic design and layout of the book, coupled with the use of color in just the right places and a very legible typeface, makes reading these books a joy. Yeah, that's right...a joy to read a 'how-to' book. Who would have thought?
I'd give this 6 stars if I could, just to send a signal to other 'how-to' authors and publishers that this is HOW IT'S DONE.
A fine companion for the beginner or intermediate Final Cut Pro 5 user.......2007-03-05
Summary: A fine companion for the beginner or intermediate Final Cut Pro 5 user.
The Book:
Final Cut Pro (FCP) is a complex swiss army knife of an edit program and can be very intimidating to a beginner. There seems to be way too many layers, windows and other sharp objects on which to cut yourself. But once you appreciate its potential, you will put imovie in your old cigar box of treasures and only bring it out to share with the grandkids.
This book guides you through the maze with agility and style. The author, Larry Jordan, is an Apple Certified Trainer who specializes in FCP and DVD Studio Pro. He is a veteran producer, director, and editor of corporate and network programs. He prides himself as a teacher and it shows in the more than 70 step-by-step Final Cut tutorials and fourteen quicktime movies. He has refined his teaching in his workshops and takes pride in presenting the information in a friendly, organized manner. Larry seems to be one of those tireless types. I'll leave it at that.
The book is part of a H.O.T. (Hands On Training) series presented by publisher lynda.com/books. The founder, Lynda Weinman, a web graphics and design veteran, wrote the very first industry book on web design, Designing Web Graphics, way back in 1995.
"The best tip in the book is that FCP gives you lots of different ways to accomplish the same task... just learn the ones that make you productive so you can forget about how the tool works and concentrate on telling your stories."
Larry Jordan
The book's chapters walk you through the entire process, from organizing and editing to outputting your project. The title page of each chapter shows a table of exercises and a summary of what you'll learn. You follow along with each exercise with the FCP project files and media located on the companion DVD-ROM. Each chapter closes with a list of helpful keyboard shortcuts and a summary of what was covered.
Throughout the book are shaded boxes and pointers identifying features that are new to FCP 5, power tips, warnings, etc. The graphic design, layout, paper texture, etc., are all very pleasing and evoke the attention to detail found in every aspect of the book.
Also on the companion DVD are the fourteen movies of Larry talking us through various aspects FCP, including capturing media, filters and multi-clip editing. Each one is about fifteen minutes and all are helpful in grasping some of the more complex features of FCP. One of the movies I especially liked was Larry's demonstration of slip/slide and ripple/roll edit features. His description helps differentiate the tools and describes when to use each.
Even though there are brief exercises on bringing files into Soundtrack Pro and LiveType, the 478 page book deals only with FCP not the other applications found in Final Cut Suite.
This book is for beginner and intermediate users of FCP. It provides a solid foundation and fills in a lot of holes if you're self-taught. It is written as if you are attending one of Larry's classes, very conversational and punctuated with his opinions and personal preferences. If you like his style, you'll like the book.
I highly recommend Final Cut Pro 5 Hands-On Training to anyone wanting to learn Final Cut Pro.
PRO: Best book I've seen for beginning FCP training. A treasure.
CON: Who has time to go through it all, plus the movies. Just have to pace yourself.
NOTE: This is written my Jim Jewell and I'm posting it
Incredible technical guide/training in FCP .......2007-02-25
Clear, precise and comprehensive. I found the exercises and tutorials well-conceived and appropriately entertaining. This text and DVD companion (tutorials) made learning a software, especially one as technically complex as FCP, a wonderful experience.
I was editing with FCP in under a week with the help of this book!
Great Price on a Great Textbook.......2006-11-10
I bought this book for a college class. The teacher requires that we read certain chapters to supplement her lectures.
The author has a funny writing style, which makes it easy to read. And there are lots and LOTS of screen shots and examples to help you through the exercises.
Enjoy! I recommend this book. It will teach you everything you need to know (including a handy table at the end of each chapter with keyboard shortcuts).
