Thoroughness is questionable.......2000-09-01
Richard Yerema appears to have made a little niche for himself in this field but it seems to me he has gotten a little complacent on how he determines a "Top" employer. I don't have experience across a lot of industries, but in my field - Oil and Gas Companies - the fact that he chose Husky Oil is unbelievable and, in fact, is so bad it colors my opinion of the rest of the book. Everyone who works in the Calgary oil patch knows Husky's reputation as a low paying, demoralizing, old school, top down company. The only way Mr. Yerema could possibly have even considered them was if he simply took what thier HR flaks told him as gospel and never followed up with anyone outside the company. The fact is Husky has not been able to attract any quality talent for over ten years, thier compensation is in the bottom quartile of the industry surveys, Thier goal is "median", thier average age is 5 to 7 years above average. Any cursory investigation should have turned this up and more. If he is this far out of the loop on my industry how close can he be in yours?
Publisher's Response.......2000-08-21
This is a response to the comments of Mr. Kahiel fromStittsville, Ontario. The book is broad because it covers a wide range of industries in cities across Canada. If he is looking for employers in one industry (hi tech) in one area (Ottawa), he should consult a larger directory like "The Career Directory" (1000 employers) or "Who's Hiring 2000" (5000 employers), which both let him target a large number of employers in specific industries and cities.
"Canada's Top 100 Employers" profiles the best places to work in the nation and is intended to highlight best- practices in many industries.
The book has received outstanding reviews from dozens of Canadian newspapers and media outlets. The book was recently #2 on the Globe and Mail's business best-seller's list. END
Very generic........2000-07-30
This book doesn't worth the money... The author made a big mistake by trying to cover all Canada-Wide and all sectors... I found very few employer in the hi-tech capital (Ottawa), and the most important part, the information provided was very basics and very generic. review for 2001 edition

Book Description
This book explores the 80251 microcontrolleran update of the industry standard 8051 featuring new components that enhance its programming in C. Despite the attractiveness of the C programming language, the author emphasizes assembly code programming as a foundational skill for embedded controller programmers and system designers. Coverage opens with a tutorial on fundamental computer operation and programming, waiting until late in the text to examine C programming concepts and examples. A wealth of applications are presented throughout, some involving I/O ports and timers; four exploring pulse generation and measurement; two A/D, D/A applications; three serial data applications; and two low-power applications. For engineering/engineering technology programmers and system designers.
Customer Reviews:
Great for current 8051 users.......2000-03-25
A friend of mine lent this great book. I have plenty of experience with the 8051 and needed to learn about the 80251. Great tips and examples enabled a smooth transition from one processor to the other. It's very clearly written. I would recommend it to anyone. It could have some good examples in "C" though.

Book Description
Urbanisation and urban development are the focus of this comprehensive account which introduces readers to the far-reaching changes now taking place in Chinese cities. New and established scholars from the fields of geography, sociology and urban planning, including Chinese social scientists, contribute chapters on the development of Chinese cities up to the turn of the twenty-first century. All their work reflects the most recent scholarship. The book's original approach links the visible changes in urban life to changes in the larger political economy of China. Conversely, broad concepts that are central to understanding the country's re-emergence on the world stage, such as the transition from socialism, market reform, and globalization, are made tangible in their effects on people's daily lives in Chinese cities and in detailed examination of how these cities have developed. Case materials are drawn from all China's major cities, but particular attention is paid to Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Book Description
Market Cultures examines the spectacular growth of capitalist enterprise among overseas Chinese and Southeast Asians. It does so, not through formal models, but by way of the varied cultures and organizations in which Asian capitalism is embedded. Eschewing talk of a uniform Asian "miracle," the book shows that there existed complex precedents for and against market capitalism in East and Southeast Asia, precedents that reflected subcultural heritages of religion, ethnicity, gender, and class. The case studies illuminate a cultural variety unacknowledged in most analyses of modern capitalism but vitally important for anyone wishing to understand one of the great economic transformations of our time.

Book Description
The introduction of market reforms has radically transformed China. The Market in Chinese Social Policy examines the impact of a shift to market principles in the critical sector of social policy. The contributors demonstrate how social policy reform has been driven by economic transformation, as profound structural change produced inevitable knock-on effects in people's livelihood. Marketization in social policy in turn creates new needs and raises issues that challenge commonly accepted notions of public-private responsibilities in a society undergoing rapid and deep social change.

More than 500 folksy omens, signs, and sayings Mountain wisdom in a humorous, concise format The ideal gift for lovers of folklore and Americana LONG BEFORE THE Foxfire series brought rural ways to the attention of the nation, folklore was an integral part of the American tradition. Signs, remedies, and sayings--gathered from years of observation and experience--were passed from generation to generation as fact. "I've heard these things all my life," says author Evelyn Childers, "and I repeated them to my children." Now she shares this trove of information with the rest of us. Book Description
The groundbreaking Audio Culture: Readings in Modern Music (Continuum; September 2004; paperback original) maps the aural and discursive terrain of vanguard music today. Rather than offering a history of contemporary music, Audio Culture traces the genealogy of current musical practices and theoretical concerns, drawing lines of connection between recent musical production and earlier moments of sonic experimentation. It aims to foreground the various rewirings of musical composition and performance that have taken place in the past few decades and to provide a critical and theoretical language for this new audio culture.
Via writings by philosophers, cultural theorists, and composers, Audio Culture explores the interconnections among such forms as minimalism, indeterminacy, musique concrète, free improvisation, experimental music, avant-rock, dub reggae, Ambient music, HipHop, and Techno. Instead of focusing on the putative "crossover" between "high art" and "popular culture," Audio Culture takes all of these musics as experimental practices on par with, and linked to, one another. While cultural studies has tended to look at music (primarily popular music) from a sociological perspective, the concern here is philosophical, musical, and historical.
Audio Culture includes writing by some of the most important musical thinkers of the past half-century, among them John Cage, Brian Eno, Glenn Gould, Umberto Eco, Ornette Coleman, Jacques Attali, Simon Reynolds, Pauline Oliveros, Paul D. Miller, David Toop, John Zorn, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and many others. The book is divided into nine thematically-organized sections, each with its own introduction. Section headings include topics such as "Modes of Listening," "Minimalisms," and "DJ Culture." In addition, each essay has its own short introduction, helping the reader to place the essay within musical, historical, and conceptual contexts. The book concludes with a glossary, a timeline, and an extensive discography.

Son likes it.......2007-01-16
My son is into "Modern Music" and said this was good, so I got it for him for Christmas.
Very comprehensive guide.......2006-06-06
This is a very comprehensive guide on the different sides of "audio culture". Many of the authors and readings you'll find here are among the most influential on the subject...From Luigi Russolo's futurist musical manifesto to Brian Eno's ambient music, coming across Stockhausen, Steve Reich, Cage, Kim Cascone, etc. Very thought-provoking, it gives an interesting macro view of the world of audio as well as the different currents and inflexion points that have changed the way we perceive music and its context...
I definitely recommend it, but beware: you'll want more!
just brilliant........2005-10-06
complex, yet easy to understand. informative, yet exciting. i recommend this boook to anyone who feels an intense love for music and the history of sound and noise.

Book Description
Winner of the Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association
Two well-known experts-Newton N. Minow is a former chairperson of the FCC-suggest bold new ways to think about television and its influence on American life and, most urgently, on American children. The authors argue that to defend an unrestricted freedom to broadcast by invoking the First Ammendent is an improper use of constitutional principle. They remind us that broadcasters are required by law to serve the public interest, and that the Supreme Court and Congress have affirmed that service to children is a broadcaster's legal obligation.

Book illuminates the power of the media to affect society.......2003-11-23
In the 1960's, one of the things requested by the leaders of the Black Movement was the more frequent appearance on television of Black performers. Specifically, these performers were to be in programs where they portrayed competent, contributing people. Such programs as Amos n' Andy, under pressure from Black leaders and Civil Rights advocates, were removed from television. Their demands were guided by the belief that the way in which Black people were portrayed on television would have a marked effect upon society's evaluation of the Black race.
In the Sep 2003 U.S. News and World Report magazine article regarding the 100 documents which affected our country's history, it is stated that the words we use to communicate our ideas to one another have the power to provoke images and emotions which can revolutionize our society.
The ability of literature, whether written or performed, to transform people's values and thus society is not a radical or new notion. It is the principle upon which our American education system is based. We do not believe that human beings are locked into a set of values which they either inherited or which were formed strictly from association with close relatives. We believe that education and environment can alter our principles.
I agree with all the previously stated ideas, so it always amazes me how so many of the people who are proponents of the power of education, proponents of the power of literature to shape our values, are often the most vehement in denying that television, music and movies have had a profound effect upon our society's values. The only way that I can reconcile these blatantly contradictory notions is that perhaps what these people are meaning to say is that, books, television, movies, and music do have the power to modify our ethics, to modify our stereotypical perceptions of a race or a gender, and do have the power to affect our notions of equity, but with regards to the sex and violence that saturate these mediums, these are just things that temporarily excite us and have little affect upon our values.
This belief is not supported by either logic or experience. The reason that our entertainment is saturated with sex and violence is because there are few things which have a greater capacity to affect us, to arouse us, to absorb our attention. For better, for worse we are chained to one another for our most intense emotions. The egocentric sweetness of self-fulfillment pales in comparison to the emotions generated by the adulation or domination of our fellow human being. Logically, you do not repeatedly arouse human beings' most intense emotions without creating an even greater appetite for more stimulation. However, although we might have a longing for this stimulation, most people will subordinate these desires to society's expectations of socially acceptable behavior. Thus few of us become sexual addicts or sadists or serial killers. Hence, the assertion by the media and others that this steady dose of sex and violence has little affect upon us. But it has. We have allowed ourselves to enjoy the reduction of a human being to a sexual object. We have allowed ourselves to enjoy seeing another human being physically harmed. This enjoyment reduces our aversion to these emotions and when a significant percentage of society finds pleasure in these emotions, its eventuates in the altering of socially acceptable behavior. And we are seeing the results of these changes, children killing children, a drug-infested youths, schools patrolled like prisons, babies having babies, a plethora of families without fathers.
However, many people feel that even if this type of entertainment does have deleterious effects, our freedom is more endangered by censorship than it is by these aforementioned negative consequences. First, let me state that we already have censorship. We do not allow nudity or acts of fornication in public or on commercial broadcast stations. We do not allow cigarette or alcohol advertisements in elementary or high schools. We do not allow teachers in these schools to teach hatred of a religion or race or gender. We do not allow the advertisement or sale or consumption of narcotics. In most states, prostitution is illegal. Censorship already exists. Second, the notion that censorship of literature or entertainment is a threat to the freedom of being able to criticize the policies of our government is a relatively new concept in the United States. Up until the 1960's censorship of entertainment was considered a given in the United States. The fact that this country, the most free society that the world has ever known, was able to not only survive but thrive for over 150 years while at the same time having a censorship of entertainment policy negates the notion that freedom is threatened by such a situation. England is another example where freedom to criticize the government was considered to be very different from the freedom to make one's living by appealing to the prurient interests of the public. Victorian England allowed Karl Marx to promote his ideas whereas libidinous France banished him from their country. There are a multitude of other examples where the government was a dictatorship but there existed no censorship of entertainment. It is to a dictator's advantage for the populace to be a slave to their passions, rather than a people working together to determine what literature and entertainment will promote within their children respect for the dignity of people.
I am very thankful for such books as "Abandoned in the Wasteland". Mr. Minow recognizes and is trying to combat the crisis which this steady dose of sex and violence and consumerism is breeding in our youth.
Expert Advice for Parents on Television.......2003-03-28
Newton Minnow is a former chairman of the FCC. Minnow is also an excellent writer who argues in this book that television is most probably unsuitable for children. Why?
Television is focused on profit alone; sells young viewers to advertisers; wastes 23 hours a week of the average child; brings about violence and obesity, low grades, irresponsibility and poor social patterns in some children; is controlled by advertising agencies and not by people who serve the real needs of children; probably leads children away from reflective thinking and toward information-processing; gives some children negative impressions that will last a lifetime; hunts for children viewers like sharpshooters; is the subject of over three thousand sociological studies; has a history of calling "an intrusion" that which is a reasonable limit; is in the business of making a profit alone; has six and a half hours of program-length commercials on Saturday mornings; is motivated by a compulsion and not sound reasons based on studies in child psychology; and tends to trigger prejudice, fear and despair. The above is unsuitable for children.
Minnow writes on page 12, "Broadcasting and television industries quickly drew their own map of the United States. Communities became markets, citizens became customers, and children became fair game."
Wonderfully informative and extremely interesting.......1999-03-09
I read this book for a media class I took, and I enjoyed it very much. Minow has been an advocate for quality television since he was Kennedy's FCC chairman, and he obviously continues to champion for what should be a simple thing. Minow and LaMay have a great chapter in this book about the history of television that beats everything I've previously read. I particularly liked the way they talked about a stranger in the house, and how our society allows violence and bloodshed into our homes everyday without a care for what our children are seeing, or how they are reacting to it. Their discussion of the talk shows that are on TV during after-school hours was a shock to me. There must be something we can do as a society to give our children the gift of quality TV without violence.I think Minow and LaMay should be commended for their insights and willingness to tackle such a huge problem.

You don't use GURPS rules? Get it anyway!.......2003-03-22
Personally, I've never been able to get into the GURPS rules, but I have a pretty big GURPS collection for someone who doesn't use GURPS! "Goblins" is one of the jewels of that collection, and I'm already planning out a fantasy campaign (using a modified old GURPS Fantasy setting and the rules from Godlike), with the goblins from this supplement playing a big role.
GURPS Goblins is surprisingly inexpensive for a book printed throughout on slick paper with (hilarious) full-color illustrations. The society and biology of the goblins (which are seamlessly tied together) are fascinating as well as funny--these may vaguely resemble the standard fantasy RPG goblins, but they stand out as one of the most unique races to be developed for any setting, fantasy or science fiction. The style of writing is less that of a game supplement and more of a travel guide to 1830s London--except there are no humans, just goblins! It's a very entertaining commentary on human nature, using the goblins to soften the blow a bit. And it's a game-within-a-game, as the whole point of goblin existence is to climb socially (due to their biology, virtually all goblins start in the gutter, no matter who their parents were), so there are very full setting-specific rules for social climbing that can be applied to other settings.
GURPS Goblins is great.......2001-01-29
Summary: GURPS Goblins is an excellent, original, highly amusing but VERY 'off the wall' RPG. Firstly, it necessary to explain that Goblins is not a stand alone fiction or non-fiction book (although Goblins makes a good read even if you don't get a chance to play it). Goblins is a supplement to the GURPS role-playing game (RPG), so to play it you will first need to but the GURPS basic set (GURPS stand for Generic Universal Role Playing System). In RPG's, players create a character, and go on an adventure created for them by the 'Games Master'. Mostly, these would involve fighting mythical monsters, and finding treasures, in some mystical universe. However, in GURPS Goblins the universe is Georgian London. It's a hard unforgiving place; a world of grinding poverty, harsh laws, disease, superstition and snobbery. The monsters are other Goblins. Lies, trickery, violence and theft are the norm. Social climbing is the pre-occupation of every Goblin. Sadly, much of this world is a true reflection of the social conditions of the time. Goblins is extremely funny, in a very nasty sort of way, along the same lines as the RPG 'Paranoia'. But where Paranioa pokes fun at the evils of totalitarianism, the target of is the Dickensian class system. It is refreshingly rare for an RPG, to concentrate so much on the character's social context. You design your character, work out his deformities (due to mistreatment in childhood, school and apprenticeship), then bravely set out to climb up the social ladder, armed with only a half-eaten pork-pie and a sixpence between you and the workhouse. If you like 'quirky' role-playing games, then GURPS Goblins is a masterpiece. This is the most orginal, funny and evocative RPG I have bought for a very long time, but, if you like your RPG character to be a tough, dashing, honourable hero type; then but a more traditional RPG would be much more appropriate.

Great Book.......2007-09-22
I learned a lot from this book. I wish I had bought more books instead of waste so much money going to school.
Learn Dreamweaver quickly without the "fluff".......2007-02-08
Teach Yourself VISUALLY Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 offers a little something for all skill levels. You will benefit greatly from the hands-on approach this book has to offer. Janine (the author) starts off by walking you through the basics of starting Dreamweaver and quickly moves right into how the interface is set up. After you get a primer on the interface she explains how the HTML is constructed which is split up across a few of the chapters. Each chapter focuses on a specific point, such as: Image, Links, Formatting, etc. The fact this book focuses on tables is odd for my development, but that doesn't mean it isn't valuable and it certainly is a good idea to understand the basic concepts of building a site.
The book ends off with 3 very important topics. Publishing, Maintaining and Database usage all of which will assist you in keeping your site up to date and your visitors coming back.
Overall I was very pleased with this books content and would recommend it to anyone looking to get started or for a refresher in all that Dreamweaver has to offer.

This book is what I wanted as far as instructions on using Dreamweaver 8.
Teach Yourself Visually Dreamweaver 8.......2006-11-03
I think this book is missing a chapter at the beginning. It starts out nice and step by step and then jumps right into editing and reviewing a web site that they never explained how to make. Between pages 25 and 26 there should be a chapter about developing something to "preview". They shouldn't have "The fast and easy way to learn" if this book is for Dreamweaver users who just need direction on individual issues.
