Career Development and Systems Theory: A New Relationship
Wendy Patton , and Mary McMahon Manufacturer: Wadsworth Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0534348130 |
Book Description
In a groundbreaking departure from traditional career counseling texts, authors Wendy Patton and Mary McMahon have developed a comprehensive book that uses General Systems Theory to unify the many approaches to career development. More holistic than a simple theory-by-theory overview, more relevant than any single-theory approach alone, this text not only illuminates this field of study but also advances it. Relevant examples throughout the book help the reader see how career education and career counseling are influenced by research and practice.Customer Reviews:
A good book for career theorists and counsellors.......2004-06-22
The first part of the book deals with existing career theories, and provides a well-written and comprehensive review of the major approaches of the past century, from the trait and factor theories of Parsons and Holland to the more recent social-cognitive, contextual and "post-modern" approaches to career development. The features of each theory are described briefly (but without too much oversimplification), and are compared and contrasted with those of other theories.
Highlighting the absence of plausible influences on career development in existing theories sets the stage for the second part of the book, which describes how the Systems Theory was developed from the authors' earlier work on adolescent decision-making. The book then goes on to describe the actual framework, which conceives the individual as the central system, encompassing many subordinate systems (including differential factors such as interests, skills, values, age, etc.), and surrounded by systems representing contextual influences (e.g. the family, educational institutions, the employment market, etc.). The inclusion of each career influence and its assignment to a particular system is justified in light of previous theories and the authors' speculation about its probable importance.
In the third part of the book, the changing work environment and the implications of systems theory for career counselling and education are discussed. Particularly interesting is its challenge to career counsellors' traditional approach of assessing clients and decreeing what kind of job would be most suitable for them. Instead, Systems Theory emphasises a partnership between the counsellor and client. Counsellors (or career development facilitators as they are termed in the book) are encouraged to help their clients see themselves as active lifelong learners, to become prepared for workplace change, to view their entire life from a systems perspective, and to use this understanding to prompt a creative and dynamic exchange with counsellors to facilitate their career development.
One problem I had with the book was that, although it provides a very extensive taxonomy of possible influences on career development, it does not really show how these are connected; it simply conceptualises them as open systems that may, or may not, be permeated and influenced by other systems. I would also question the placement of certain elements in particular systems. For example, gender and values are placed in the individual's system, but it could be argued they should be also represented in the external systems given that both can also be regarded as socially constructed and ascribed.
In spite of these criticisms, I still regard Career Development and Systems Theory to be an extremely stimulating, informative, and significant text, in bringing together existing career formulations and discussing how career practice might be improved. It seems to be targeted primarily towards an academic audience (and will no doubt stimulate a great deal of thinking and subsequent research), but would probably also be of interest to career advisors, teaching professionals and students of this field.

The Blair Witch Project: A Dossier

Amazon.com
In the fall of 1994, three student filmmakers, Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams, ventured into the Black Hills of Maryland to investigate the legend of the Blair Witch. They never returned and to this day are still considered missing. However, one year after their disappearance, their footage was discovered. Directors Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg Hale edited the footage and released it as the movie titled The Blair Witch Project. As a companion to the movie, occult journalist D.A. Stern compiled this dossier, unearthing deeper mysteries surrounding the students' disappearance. It includes a full account of the case from a private investigator, police reports, newspaper articles, student profiles, interviews with the students' families and friends, and the most revealing artifact--37 pages from Heather Donahue's journal. We also get a comprehensive history of the Blair Witch legend, complete with a copy of an 1823 newspaper article. The hype surrounding The Blair Witch Project is a rare phenomenon in which a purely fictitious film (sorry to burst the occult lover's bubble, but there is no Blair Witch myth; and those missing filmmakers are actors who are alive and well) creates a legend in and of itself. The collected data found in this dossier lends more eerie authenticity to the whole affair. This is an outstanding compilation for its acute attention to detail and ability to enhance the mystery, which in the end is the real charm of this portfolio. --Samantha Allen Storey

Interesting. .......2004-12-23
slim read offers bits for Blair Witch fans.......2003-06-25
Ofcourse, the real fun is how the film blurred the lines between fact and fiction on both sides of the camera (film students go into the forest, believing the witch to be a legend, until the legend comes for them; ads for the flick hinted that the story of the missing students was true when it wasn't). "Dossier" follows tradition - picking up the story from the perspective of private investigators hired by Heather's mother to solve the mystery. Like the film, "Dossier" keeps the tension high by masking its subject well - the "narrative" consists of memos, letters and transcripted phone calls compiled by the Buck Buchanan detective agency. It's obvious that nobody attached to the project believes in the witch legend, though their memos only detail weirder findings, and an enigma whose solution becomes more elusive.
While "Dossier" knows the tricks of the film, it brings less to the legend than the film did. It's a short, thin read, one giving us bits without fleshing much out. We learn of the origins of Blair and of Elly Kedward, the future witch. But Kedward's story never goes beyond one we can label as man's cruelty to man. (A mysterious, if otherwise decent figure, Kedward is driven into the woods, presumably to her death; successive generations are haunted by her.) We also learn more about Rustin Parr who murdered a group of Burkittsville children during WWII. (Parr's story is an oddball footnote to the legend - he's obviously a nut, but devotees of Blair Witch can't divorce themselves of the idea that his actions were a genuine manifestation of the witch. More on Parr, later.)
Unfortunately, the patchwork narrative misses details or at least fails to highlight them. "Dossier" was probably going the subtle route for deep chills and preserving the surface rationale for the story as a record of a professional investigation, but some of the details inexplicably glossed over seem as much as interest to us as to Buck Buchanan. We learn for example that Heather's camera and film were found inside of a wall of a ruined house by a group of students, the implication being that the ruin dated to civil war times, and the sections in which the camera was found looks to have been undisturbed since then. At this point, having only caught the flick on cable, and missed both the "Curse of the Blair Witch" and any of the special editions of the original (and having read none of the books) I naturally assumed at first that the ruin was the abandoned house in which Heather and Josh enter at the end of the film. However, it's soon apparent that the ruin nothing like that house, which closely resembles the one in which Rustin Parr committed his multiple murders (remember all those handprints? Those are supposed to be the handprints of children), a house which no longer exists. Nevertheless, "Dossier" passes the house by entirely, and does little more with the footage itself, even though it's the only tangible evidence of mystery. I thought "Dossier" and "Blair Witch Porject" consciously decided on keeping Parr conspicuously nearby but separate, only adding to the sense of mystery - until Parr became the subject of a "Blair Witch" - licensed video game.
Two things kill the fun offered by "Dossier" - it's a slim read, and it lacks any of the tension suffered by the heroes of the film. Though the heroes of "Dossier" raise and then eliminate various possible solutions, they never seriously consider the fact that they are victims of an elaborate con perpetrated by Heather and crew (sure they're working for Heather's mom, but even so they're still investigators). The "con" idea would have given "Dossier" a severely needed shot of tension, and is only one idea that could have really fleshed the book out. It's clear from "Dossier" that both it and the movie drew from the same inspiration that led to the novel "A House of Leaves" - a huge, dense mystery composed of overlapping narratives (with their own fonts and piles of footnotes) centered around a mysterious documentary about a house whose interiors rebel against laws of time and space. With a bit more effort and time, "Dossier" could have done much to enliven the mystery of "Blair Witch" while providing a great alternative to readers intimidated by the insurmountable size and narrative of "House". Instead, it does neither.

Book Description
The Sopranos is a cultural phenomenon. This award-winning drama breathes new life into the Italian/American mobster narrative, following the complex life of Tony Soprano - a major player in New Jersey's organised crimes fraternity who is also trying his best to be a good family man. Great characterisation, sharp dialogue and complex, darkly comic plots make the series compulsive viewing. This is the only complete, up-to-date guide to the series. The highlights of each episode are presented in an accessible, hugely entertaining format with obsessive attention to detail. It's all in here: the food, the music, the dreams, the visits to the psychiatrist, the snappy one-liners - plus all your favourite characters and five stand-alone essays about the series. This is the only completely up-to-date program guide, covering the first three seasons of this immensely popular and award-winning show.Customer Reviews:
A fun but not terribly insightful look at the Sopranos.......2002-12-20
For each episode, Bishop gives us a plot description, then briefly discusses several topics "Mobspeak" has new mob terms used in the episode; "Mama Mia" tracks Livia's activities. The topics conclude with "The Verdict"--Bishop's opinion of the episode as a whole.
While the book promises insight and to tell us about things we might not have seen, it doesn't fully deliver. I doubt if any of the "insights" would come as news to anyone of normal intelligence who has paid attention while watching the series.
Bishop, a Brit, tends to use Britspeak at odd moments--he refers to the young Tony hiding in the "boot" of his father's car, for example, rather than the American "trunk". Much more annoying are the errors he makes--he misspells "Paterson" as "Patterson", gives the first name of the imprisoned mob boss (never seen) as Ercoli--it is actually Dominic, or Dom (Ercoli is Tony's late, mentally disabled uncle), and misspells "caporegime" as "copa-regime", among many others.
A somewhat-useful reference guide, since it includes cast lists (but you can get those from the HBO web site as well). But don't expect too much beyond it. The cheapest of the many Sopranos books out this season, and perhaps also the least worthy.
Try another Sopranos book before you go here.
