      Book Description

Over the past four decades, programming has continued to be a viable strategy for transmitting knowledge, affecting skills development, changing attitudes, and helping students reach their potential both on and off campus. This volume will assist student affairs professionals as they plan, implement, and evaluate their educational interventions on college and university campuses. From planning a lunchtime seminar to conducting a semester-long support group, this sourcebook will provide readers with guidance on implementing programming that is powerful, relevant, and focused on learning. The contributors detail each step of program assessment, planning, implementation, and outcome evaluation. They explain the importance of collaborating with faculty and others, illustrating several types of programming partnerships with four brief case studies and examine the significant partnership aspects that led to programming success. The contributors also explore two of today's most relevant programming topics--multicultural competence and sexual violence--and provide an overview of a number of promising programs covering such areas as service learning, leadership, community-building, alcohol awareness, and diversity.

        Book Description

The conventional wisdom that political and economic actors in colonial countries are passive and reactive is undermined by Goldberg's close examination of the decisions and calculations of leading political and economic actors. Goldberg shows how critical decisions affecting Egypt's integration into the world economy were based on clear understandings of what policies were most likely to advance the interests of leading interest groups, with results that continue to bedevil Egypt's political economy today. This is a tale of paradoxes and unintended consequences of rational action.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An absolute necessity.......2007-03-21

I had started music lessons late (piano for me, but the book can be read by any musician), had horrible habits, and played with tension. I was not exactly material for a musician. In fact, these things plagued me all my life, and even though I have two degrees in music from top schools, I always felt I was missing something; that I could play better if only something changed.

I thought I needed more finger dexterity. But I realized dexterity was not the issue; everyone can wiggle their fingers. My issue was a mental one. My inner voice (Green refers to this as Self 1) was constantly criticising me, and I was listening. As a result, I too often botched passages that I otherwise could play. Technical mastery was difficult because I played with so much tension.

But my wife put The Inner Game of Music into my hands. After barely even 20 pages, I had shown marked progress. Having completed the book, I can testify to its usefulness and indeed, necessity. Dr Green will walk you through the problems everyone faces, and how to overcome them. Once overcome, there is no longer a mental block that prevents us from attainting to our personal best. (Further, his practice tips are unparalleled.) Now, I no longer have the problems I used to. This is not to say I changed overnight; artistry is a path, and not a destination. But there is a night and day difference between my playing *just a few months ago* and now. I'm even planning on getting my doctorate; a goal I used to feel was a pipe dream.

If you are a musician who struggles to attain technical mastery, or who suffers from performance anxiety, or a host of other ailments that hold you back from being a true artist, this book WILL help you.

          Buy it. Now.

4 out of 5 stars Inner Game review.......2007-02-22

Similar concepts of Gallaways other books ( I have read them all) with a good musical propective. I recommend it to musicians especially if they perform.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best Inner Game book.......2007-01-10

I've read 'The Inner Game of Tennis' which was great. Years later I read 'The Inner game of work' which I found a little harder to bring into practice. The great thing about this book is that Barry Green, a musician himself, rewrites the whole Inner Game from his standpoint as a musician. This makes it really 1 + 1 = 3.
It's full of exersizes, very practical.

4 out of 5 stars inner game has more rules than stated in book!.......2006-05-27

this book has left out a lot of variables within the game of the music industry! if you want more information chekc out the works of ty cohen and his book "The New Music Industry: How to Use the Power of the Internet to Multiply Your Industry Exposure, Fan Base and Income Potential Online!" this ones a killer!

2 out of 5 stars Reads like a book report.......2006-02-07

I've read this book twice now, and while I've gotten useful tips out of it, it really does read like a book report of the Inner Game of Tennis, frequently using phrases like 'Gallwey refers to...' and 'Gallwey says'. So I read the Inner Game of Tennis and found that I could have garnered much the same insights from this book without the added and sometimes confusing editorializing by Mr. Green. (And some of Green's additions just complicate things by giving your 'self 1' additional ammunition that it may not have thought of yet.)
All in all a useful book, but to do it over again, I'd skip it and go straight to the Inner Game of Tennis.

In Flight Maps, essayist Jennifer Price methodically accounts for the fall of the passenger pigeon, the rise of the pink lawn flamingo, the propagation of nature-themed mall stores, and what all this has to do with modern humanity's relationship to nature. The book began as an award-winning doctoral dissertation at Yale, now repackaged for the mainstream reader. Primarily a smart meditation for baby boomers on why a Volvo can't save your soul and why the name "Nature Company" should seem ironic, Flight Maps is a long, scholarly riff on how nature has evolved into a place apart. We fumble to revisit and recapture it, with everything from Toyota 4Runners to Rainforest Crunch candy.

Price's observations center around how our actions, our beliefs, and--especially--our purchases betray an idealized but conflicted view of nature: it's an undiluted source of "realness," but also a remote and abstract ideal, often mangled by our embrace. Flight Maps traces these attitudes back to 19th-century America, recounting the extinction of passenger pigeons and the faltering first steps of early conservation groups. The book's second and best half, though, covers the present, finding nature's place in the mall. Price's lightly jaded sense of humor, combined with her academic rigor, perfectly skewers the likes of Northern Exposure's $5,000-a-day moose and stress-relief products from the Nature Company's catalog, such as "Pachelbel Canon in D Blended with the Eternal Sound of the Sea--Creates a tranquil atmosphere for quiet meditation.... CD $16.98"). --Paul Hughes

                            Book Description

"I had never planned to become a Thoreau of the mall," says Jennifer Price. Yet that is exactly what she has done in this brilliant debut book.

American nature writing is a robust genre embraced by everyone from Thoreau to John McPhee and Michael Pollan. Drawing on this august tradition, Jennifer Price breaks out of the mold and does something wholly original with Flight Maps.

Rather than lighting out for the wild places, Price examines the ways in which we have brought nature home to our retail outlets, our front yards, our restaurants, our television sets. What place does nature occupy in our hearts and minds? Price sifts through landscapes and artifacts as diverse as eighteenth-century cookbooks, mall-architecture manuals, dinner menus, lawn ornaments, the Mall of America, and John Waters movies.

Flight Maps charts the ways in which Americans have historically made-and missed-connections with nature. The book addresses today's generation of affluent baby boomers, with their urban and suburban civilization and its discontents. Price ruminates on everything from the extreme popularity of The Nature Company and television shows like "Northern Exposure" to the plastic pink flamingo, simultaneously the totem of artifice and kitsch and a potent symbol of our powerful and problematic vision of nature.

By turns witty and whimsical, Flight Maps is a sophisticated meditative archaeology of Americans' desire to make nature meaningful in their lives.

                            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Nature Company Conflict.......2004-12-17

Price's book (also her dissertation) starts strong, with a formidably researched essay on the extinction of the passenger pigeon that does none of the usual things: it doesn't dwell on man's brutality, it doesn't eulogize the pigeon. Instead, she very thoughtfully considers the ways in which people USE nature, and why, and explores the mystery (it remains a mystery) of exactly why the passenger pigeons disappeared.

Human uses of (and, maybe more importantly, imitations of) nature are the focus of the book. The plastic pink flamingo becomes Price's symbol for our strangely consumerist attitude toward nature. WHY do we have plastic pink flamingos? To Price, they're the most obvious example of "artificial" nature, and they've gone through an amazing range of cultural significance -- from bourgeois lawn ornament to embarrassingly loud "low-income" decoration to hipster accessory.

Price dwells on the symbolism of the flamingo more than is strictly necessary. The themes are a little worn by the time we get to her analysis of the the "nature store" phenomenon, all the Natural Wonders and Nature Companies that sprang up in the nineties. Very interesting, but again, her questions have been asked and answered so thoroughly by this time that I, for one, was TOO aware, by the time I finished, that this was a doctoral dissertation and not a book.

5 out of 5 stars Explains our reactions to nature as a commodity.......2003-06-10

If you think The Nature Company is an oxymoron, Price articulates exactly why that is. If you feel a sense of discomfort in today's society, yet feel vaguely guilty about that discomfort, Price explains that as well. This truly is a fabulous book that will have you thinking (and perhaps even shopping) differently immediately.

I found this book on a closeout table at a local bookstore. When I went back to buy more copies for friends, they were all gone! It's really great...Look at some of the chapter headings:"When Women were Women, Men Were Men, and Birds Were Hats", "A Brief Natural History of the Pink Flamingo". "Roadrunners Can't Read". Scoff this up ASAP or you'll regret it! P.Smith, Texas.

It's not often that a book can challenge some ideas you hold near and dear while at the same time leaving you in stiches. A friend of mine insisted I read "Flight Maps"--I'm a confirmed environmentalist/tree-hugger etc., but Price has held up an ideological mirror to me and exposed some of my most treasured assumptions about "pristine nature" along with the contradiction of my consumerist lifestyle (yes, I own an SUV--to drive to the mountains!) coupled with my ecological sensibility. Maybe all that humor made it easier to swallow. In any event, I'm glad I read it. One of those books that really changes your perspective on life.

IM Pedersen has written a clear, comprehensive guide to the Benko and done it in such a fashion as to make it relatively easy to use right away. He organizes his information into ten chapters, with such titles as "The Classical Main Line," "Fianchetto Lines," "Dlugy's 5 f3," and so on. The "Quick Summaries" are especially useful for id'ing plans, themes, and key moves since Pedersen does not use model games but analyzes key variations and move alternatives. A powerful book!

                            Book Description

The goal of The Reasoned Schemer is to help the functional programmer think logically and the logic programmer think functionally. The authors of The Reasoned Schemer believe that logic programming is a natural extension of functional programming, and they demonstrate this by extending the functional language Scheme with logical constructs -- thereby combining the benefits of both styles. The extension encapsulates most of the ideas in the logic programming language Prolog.

The pedagogical method of The Reasoned Schemer is a series of questions and answers, which proceed with the characteristic humor that marked The Little Schemer and The Seasoned Schmer. Familiarity with a functional language or with the first eight chapters of The Little Schemer is assumed. Adding logic capabilities required the introduction of new forms. The authors' goal is to show to what extent writing logic programs is the same as writing functional programs using these forms. In this way, the reader of The Reasoned Schemer will come to understand how simple logic programming is and how easy it is to define functions that behave like relations.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating and challenging.......2007-02-05

As the saying goes, if you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you'll like. The authors have extended the approach of their classic book _The Little Schemer_ to encompass what is usually called logic programming, but which they refer to as "relational programming" (a much better name, in my opinion). They extend the Scheme language with relational analogues of many constructs, notably lambda and cond (in many, many variations), and also provide extended versions of standard Scheme operations like cons, car, and cdr. Basically, the relational approach involves taking the result of a function call and making it just another argument, but a special argument that can get assigned to as the result of the computation. Big deal, so what? you ask. The important thing is that _all_ of the function arguments behave this way, so that you can specify the result of a function (relation) and ask the system to generate the arguments. For instance, instead of saying 2 + 2 = X and figuring out what X is, you can say X + 2 = 4 and the system will figure out what X has to be (in this case... ummm... oh yeah, 2). To do this, the system uses a mechanism called "backtracking" which systematically tries alternatives until it either finds the answer, gives up, or (if you didn't program the search right) goes on forever. If you haven't seen this style of programming before, this book will definitely open your eyes.

The relational/logic programming style is usually learned by studying the Prolog language, which is how I learned it (though I'm no expert). Having a knowledge of Prolog will definitely make this book easier to understand, although the approach given here is more modern than Prolog in several ways. For one thing, the named relations of Prolog are replaced here by anonymous relations (analogous to lambda expressions being anonymous functions), and for another, the (somewhat brutal) "cut" operator of Prolog, which is used to control backtracking, is ignored in favor of more subtle approaches involving interleaving solutions and giving up after single results are found.

I think the approach of learning-by-pattern-recognition that all the "Little X" books use is fairly effective here, though I think a lot of readers (meaning me) wouldn't mind a more extended discussion of the mechanics of the system.

All in all, if you liked _The Little Schemer_ and are curious about new ways of programming, you should definitely pick up a copy of this book. It will stretch your mind like a Slinky, and when you're done you'll have learned a new way of looking at programming.

4 out of 5 stars elegant and powerful Prolog.......2006-01-05

This is a sequel to "The Little Schemer". It goes further into demonstrating why relational programming can be elegant and powerful. You would also benefit by having some previous knowledge of Prolog, for the text expresses its ideas in the framework of this language.

Relational programming is shown to be a very different beast from procedural/OO programming. Beautiful and concise notation. Especially if you try to imagine expressing some of the book's examples in conventional C or Java. A programmer harking from that background might have an impedance mismatch. But upon reflection, perhaps it is especially for such a reader that the authors are writing.

                            5 out of 5 stars Mind-Blowing Book.......2005-10-23

I'm a long-time fan of the "Schemer" series of books and was excited to receive my preordered copy of "The Reasoned Schemer" yesterday- It was supposed to be published in July but must have been held up until now...

I have no relationship with any of the authors and just want to put my $0.02 in on it, since not many others may have a copy yet- I think it is absolutely FANTASTIC so far!

The book itself is very much in the same style as the rest of the "Schemers"- A Q&A style of exposition that helps your brain to absorb most of the essence of a new programming style without having to spend the time to write tons of actual code yourself to learn the basic philosophy.

The main purpose of the book is to attach a set of logic programming commands to the core R5RS scheme that allow you to implement all kinds of cool things, such as constraint programming, pattern matching, nondeterministic programming, and PROLOG-like logical reasoning. The material covered is not too dissimilar from the material in the back of "On Lisp" or some parts of SICP. What distinguishes it is that the implementation used has been widdled down to its bare essence and uses a syntax modeled on standard FP scheme syntax. Plus, the subject matter is treated with a certain academic rigor that gives these new commands the feeling of a practical toolset instead of just a clever novelty. I could imagine incorporating these commands into my regular scheme code...

As I mentioned, there is a list of new mysterious scheme commands that enable the logic reasoning abilities- They look superficially like the standard FP commands in scheme, but behave slightly different- They have names such as "conde", "caro", etc. There are also a couple of commands with no FP scheme analogue, such as "run" and "fresh". Using these new commands, logical reasoning can be mixed with standard FP scheme pretty seamlessly. An appendix at the end of the book implements the full set of commands- It totals about 150 LOC in length.

I'm still only partially into the book, but just wanted to let folks know that this book has some really mind-blowing ideas and may be the answer to those, like me, who are still searching for a resource that will allow them to "get" PROLOG-like languages and want to learn how to incorporate such techniques into their programming projects with the least amount of fuss possible.
