      Book Description

China's Entrepreneurial Army offers a fascinating insight into the complex interwoven relationship between state power, military burden, and economic prosperity in today's China. From the early 1980s to the end of the 1990s, the People's Liberation Army went into business to make up for falling defence spending. It established the world's largest military business complex comprising thousands of army-owned enterprises stretching into virtually every corner of the Chinese economy and overseas. This participation in business gave the military substantial economic strength and allowed it to adapt to the changing locus of power and authority in China in the reform era, which was increasingly measured through economic might. But the rapid ascent of the military commercial juggernaut also sowed the seeds of its ignominious demise. Corruption, smuggling, and profiteering became so rampant that the political reliability of the military and the health of the Chinese economy began to be undermined. In 1998, the armed forces were ordered to get out of business. Tai Ming Cheung traces the origins, examines the participation, and details the demise of the Chinese military business complex. This path-breaking study is a uniquely comprehensive and in-depth account of this Byzantine and opaque institution, and provides a vivid portrait of the corporations, military units personalities, and other entities that were at the heart of this commercial powerhouse. Based upon extensive research of primary source Chinese publications and field work,China's Entrepreneurial Army looks at the role of the military business complex from a number of different perspectives: its success as a commercial venue, the impact on civil--military relations, and the broader benefits and drawbacks of this commercialism on military professionalism and economic modernization in China and elsewhere.

              Book Description

It was 1994: post–Liz Phair, mid–Courtney Love, just shy of Alanis Morissette. After seven years of slogging it out in the Boston music scene, Jen Trynin took a hard look at herself and gave “making it” one last shot.
It worked. Suddenly Trynin became the spark that set off one of the most heated bidding wars of the year. Major labels vied for her, to the tune of millions of dollars in deals. Lawyers, managers, and booking agents clamored for her attention. Billboard put her on the cover. Everyone knew she was the Next Big Thing. But then she wasn’t.

In a series of dizzying, hilarious, heartbreaking snapshots, Trynin captures what it’s like to be catapulted to the edge of rock stardom, only to plummet back down to earth. Everything I’m Cracked Up to Be is the story of a girl who got what she wished for—and lived happily ever after anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Backstage Trip.......2007-08-01

I won't sit here and pretend to be some literary scholar because Jen would see right through that. Nor will I effect the guise of a failed and passionate musician because I aint that either. Just a guy who happens to dig her music (what little there is, comparatively), thinks she's way too smart to be popular, and respects her intellect and ability to both rock AND communicate at the same time.

Heck, I even bought that turgid Loveless album because Jen was associated with it. I MUST BE NUTS!!!!

Note to Jen: Write more. Sing more. Write about whatever the heck suits you, because people will love it.

This is one hell of a good read. Do it again.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting account of a taste of rock fame.......2007-07-16

The plot in a nutshell: it's the mid-90's, Jen Trynin is a folk type singer on the Boston music scene who is stuck in the black hole of chick folk night music that no one comes out for. She decides to change her style and become a rock chick front for a band of three she assembles. She puts out her own cd, markets herself geniusly and literally overnight, everyone in the music industry all of a sudden not only knows who she is, but wants to sign her up. She hires a top music attorney and sparks a bidding war the likes of which hasn't been seen before. She finally signs with a top label who puts out her record and she goes on tour. One glitch: this rock chick isn't really who she is and between trying to be someone she's not and the pressure of living up to the bype that's been built up around her, Trynin starts to crack. She starts drinking too much, cheats on her boyfriend and subtly sabotages her career. When her cd stalls, it's as much a self-fulfiling prophecy as anything else. She goes on to make a second cd which also garnishes rave reviews but never finds an audience. Jen Trynin becomes a has-been before ever truly becoming "someone."

What's really fascinating about Trynin's memoir is getting to see a rare glimpse of what it must feel like for anyone who is famous to go from nonfamous and trying to be famous, to actually famous. After reading Trynin's book, I have more sympathy for what it must be like to know that once you're doing well and succeeding, it could all just go away overnight due to a fickle public. The pressure Trynin finds herself under is intense and she is so candid and honest about what she is feeling every step of the way (at one point she mentions keeping a journal which accounts for her memory of the smallest details). The bottom line for Trynin is that she realizes the "famous" Jen is not the "real" Jen and the act of being famous-- of having to be "on" all of the time and having to constantly be worried about your popularity-- is no fun at all. Trynin had a lot more fun, was ultimately a lot more happy before she "had it all." It's the memoir version of the adage "be careful what you wish for."

That said, Trynin can be long-winded. She goes into lengthy detail and recounts mundane conversations that all start to sound alike after awhile. Her observations about how she's feeling become repetitive as well. At least fifty pages could have been shaved off this book and nothing would have been lost. However, despite the repetition, Trynin's memoir is a relatively quick read. You want to get to the end, see how it all turns out which is a testament to her ability to keep it interesting given that it's no surprise how her tale turns out (had you ever heard of Jen Trynin??). What's great too about Trynin is that she doesn't take herself too seriously and has a talent for zeroing in on the humorous aspects of her tale of woe.

All in all, I think this is a worthwhile read. It's everything you never realized you wanted to know about how record deals are made coupled with a human story of professional "failure." And in the truest sense of taking lemons and making lemonade, Trynin uses her experience and makes something successful out of it.

4 out of 5 stars Wow. This was a real good book........2007-06-09

Thanks, Jen. This is an awfully good read, and I think you're a good writer. And I wish you all the continued best.

This book grabs you--makes you laugh--makes you think--makes you fall-in-love with Jen Trynin!! One of the best rock 'n roll memoirs of all time!! Every sentence is like a genuis rock lyric. The characters are vivid--the writing is genuis. I couldn't put it down. Inhale her metaphors. YOU WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Rock and Roll Fairy Tale which rings true.......2007-04-23

There are a lot of typical Rock-star-gets-caught-up-in-the-life tales out there, but this book is somewhat different from those. Yes - Jen Trynin did get sucked into the life, drugs, delusions of grandeur to a degree. However, this book is ultimately about her strength in spite of those things - having survived grueling demands and schedules dictated by a heartless and calculating music business, and living to tell about it.

The book also presents a detailed account of how new signings are normally handled and, more specifically, why the artist - not the record company - ends up assuming most of the risk if they fail. Don't read this book if you're in a band trying to make it to a major label. You may end up being discouraged.

                  Book Description

For punk rockers, music and art have often been used as tools for resisting and accommodating the interests of society's dominant classes. During the late 1970s, a predominantly white, male working/middle-class counterculture began to develop what is now known as punk rock. This book shows how punk rock serves to both subvert and accommodate the interest of late-capitalist American society by looking at the trends in the ideas, values, and beliefs transmitted through punk lyrical messages, specifically through the content of three punk record labels and how they have evolved over time. The impact of punk will continue because it is a product of the changing face of alternative cultural spaces-spaces that impact and are impacted by increasingly hostile and exploitive relationships between and within oppressor and oppressed groups.

The latest release of Microsoft Outlook 2000, Microsoft's tool for managing time, tasks, contacts, and resources at a personal level, runs more smoothly and has more features than any of its predecessors. Microsoft Outlook 2000 for Dummies shows you--without wasting time--how to use this powerful program.

Author Bill Dyszell dedicates much of this book to electronic mail. Though readers get a thorough overview of how to configure Outlook to retrieve e-mail from a mail server on the Internet, the author (perhaps unfairly) assumes that users on a local area network (LAN) have access to an organizational guru to configure their mail for them. Once you get connected, you can count on this book to explain how to filter, sort, store, track, and otherwise use Outlook to get the most out of e-mail. You'll also find explanations of related features, like the Contact List and Tasks List.

Dyszel pays a fair amount of attention to the ways in which you can customize Outlook. That's important, because customization can significantly improve Outlook's usefulness and it's one of the program's least intuitive capabilities.

Microsoft Outlook 2000 for Dummies also shows you how to fix up the button bar to your liking, as well as how to add and delete columns in tables and modify sort sequences. The book also shows how to add custom fields to Outlook's forms. --David Wall

4 out of 5 stars Good for a real Dummy.......2003-07-31

I bought this book for a client who uses Outlook for email. I've ready quite a bit of it myself and so far, everything we've needed to figure out has been covered in the book.

I don't personally use Outlook, however (I use Eudora). I did find it a little lacking in "security" issues, but it is a "beginner's" book, after all.

5 out of 5 stars Outlook is complicated, this book is simple and worth it.......2001-10-09

Outlook is a great, albeit complex, program. It is impossible for a book (especially a Dummies book) to be an authoritative text on the program. But Outlook for Dummies goes a long way to giving a user or even an administrator of a mid-sized operation essential information to get started and use Outlook effectively. For advanced features, I depended on MS Press Book "Running Outlook 2000". Dummies has a wide breadth of information which is simple, readable and applicable to practical use of MS Outlook in an office environment.

This is by far the best step-by-step reference book for those of us who are not College trained computer nerds. Mr. Dyszel presents the material in understandable terms.

5 out of 5 stars offices underrated piece of the puzzle.......1999-12-15

If you are anything like me you have been using excell and word everyday for years never really delving into Outlook because it looked silly and confusing well i started using outlook 98 and it is AWESOME it does so much more than email I keep my entire company focused and task oriented using outlook. Get this great book and start using outlook today you will be suprized how much is there for you to use.

2 out of 5 stars basic information, nothing very deep.......1999-06-28

I bought this book after using Outlook98 for approximately one week. During that week, I was self tought, and purchased the book because I was looking for something that could give me more than I could teach myself. What I found was disappointing. The book is essentially a walk through of the simple features of Outlook. It provides a basic overview, but lacks the depth in any one subject that I hoped to find.

This has been a very helpful book. I find the dummy books easy to follow and usually can find what I need. I have just gotten heavy into using the outlook and the book has made it easy, almost comfortable. Excellant book.
