Author not in the IT field.......2007-02-10
Well written, but not written by someone that is actually in the field of IT. The author's are writers and not IT people. I highly recommend Ian K. Fisher's "How to Start a Career in Information Technology".

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to use hands-on methodology to present programmable logic devices from a viewpoint which will prepare the reader for application within the digital design industry. The knowledge of, and ability to apply state machines to control situations is vital to the overall education of the digital designer.
Customer Reviews:
Wrong title BUT GREAT book.......2004-10-30
The correct title is:
Digital Designing With Programmable Logic Devices
This is possibly the best book I have purchased on this subject.
It contains a thorough coverage of logic design with Finite State Machines. Examples include various
Programmable Logic Devices from PAL16L8 to 10R8 and even ROMS.
Introduction to micro code and CISC. Address Bus Decoding is covered towards the end as well.
All in all a wonderful book - and found just in time given my interest in digital design. I am probably
going to read it a second time, before delving into my own projects.
In short you should come away from this confident enough to purchase a CPLD/FPGA board and
start experimenting.
Wrong title.......2000-06-13
I suggest you correct the title of this book you got it as "Digital Designing in the Programmable Logic Device". Shame on you. I am just starting to read this book so you should here from me.

Book Description
Population aging has fuelled interest in pensions and intergenerational equity, leading to privatization of pensions. Yet the gender implications of such policies and the connections between the gender contract and the generational contract remain unexplored.
Women, Work and Pensions examines how women's paid and unpaid work, interacting with the gendered pension systems of six liberal welfare states - Britain, the US, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand - contributes to female poverty in later life. By comparing how these welfare states deal with women's employment, family roles and pension entitlement, the nature of the residual welfare model is better understood.
Changes over the past three decades in the gender contract and in women's employment suggest that family caring may have less impact on women's pensions in the future. Yet pension reforms which diminish the effectiveness of women-friendly features in state pensions through cuts and privatization point in the opposite direction. This issue, and how the pension penalties of caring vary with women's class, ethnicity and birth cohort, are major themes of the book.

Book Description
The first book made you roar with laughter--and it made you ravenous for even more! So here it is: another 300-plus pages of weird, wacky, and wonderful Internet humor. Absolutely uncensored, it can be gratuitous, scatological, shocking, silly, and superficial. You'll get more helpings of frivolous forwardings, sick tales of personal injury and injustice, celebrity lampoons, puerile puns and sexist sideswipes, and other timeless gags. Laugh out loud at amazing "true" stories, dozens of relationship case studies, and important "research" on whether hair color affects your behavior. Always topical, these witty writings from the electronic age puncture pretentiousness in all aspects of modern life, from cybersex to office politics to Dubya-isms.

OMIGOD! Buy this book!.......2002-11-13
This is a laugh-out-loud book to read for yourself or to other people. It truly shows that humor transcends any culture.
My husband, normally quiet, introspective and conservative, read it cover to cover laughing all the way.
A book small enough to fit into your handbag or briefcase, but thick enough (336 pages) with humor to last for a long time. I'm buying the other two editions!

Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2007-05-09
This book is fantastic! The author has an incredible ability to explain complex phenomenon in a concise manner that is easy to understand. I learned a great deal from this book.
Technical or NOT technical tips on good sound!.......2007-05-05
I received a copy of this book when I was preparing the curriculum for a college course I taught as an adjunct professor for two years. I believe it gave my students not only a good classroom study book, but also a useful reference book for the "real-world" after graduation! Scott Stark gives great rule-of-thumb knowledge, as well as deeper technical fundamentals behind the knob turning and fader moving decisions that every sound engineer will face at the helm of a live sound reinforcement system, no matter whether for 100 or 100,000 listeners!
Definitive Handbook on Learning to do Sound.......2007-03-15
I've used this book myself and have been referred to it by the best sound guys around. Great for beginners wanting to get a handle on how a sound system works from power amps, pre-amps, microphone differences to why feedback happens and how to stop it, and lots of other practical advice on how to mix live sound. Good for more advanced sound people who want to advance their skills.
Plenty of easily accesible information.......2007-02-03
I am a classically trained musician working as a secondary school teacher, and I bought this book to help me understand how to use amplifiers, PA's, mixing desks etc as I am teaching a 'Live Music' subject. It has plenty of information without getting too technical and is written in an accessible and interesting way. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a basic mathematical and musical understanding of sound.
big n, thick.......2007-01-16
there is alot in here. a lot to read that is... if you are looking for a lengthy breakdown on
what sound waves are made of and how they react... if you want a deep understanding
of what happens in a subwoofer... this could be for you. It has the look and feel of a
course manual... there is a lot to take in.
No quick fix. Very involved. But if that is what you want... its all in here.

Book Description
What's a man to do when his life is just work and trouble? Some hunt, some fish, some drink, some gamble. Richard Chiappone writes about them all--men living their lives, doing what they have to, and getting through the day. These characters are real, gritty, imperfect workingmen, who make the wrong choices and mess up. These stories about real people, tough and resilient, making hard choices, are a powerful and inspiring collection.
Customer Reviews:
Stories That Swim in the Deep End.......2007-07-08
The fact that Richard Chiappone shares the same initials as the godfather of modern short fiction is pure coincidence. The fact that Chiappone's stories in Water of an Undetermined Depth punch readers in the gut with the same five-knuckled force Raymond Carver used in his fiction is perhaps less surprising. The characters in these fourteen tales, nearly all of them down on their luck blue-collar guys, could have stepped straight from the pages of Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? without even bumping the ash off their cigarettes. Carver's ghost haunts every page of Water of an Undetermined Depth.
Comparing contemporary writers to Carver is an safe avenue for reviewers to take when trying to describe a book's tone (Tense. Gritty. Genuine.), and I'll admit I'm about to go down Easy Street; but we have to start somewhere. Hell, when Geoffrey Wolff reviewed Carver's first book, he compared him to guys like Harold Pinter, Thomas Pynchon and Franz Kafka. I'm only surprised Wolff didn't mention Hemingway as well. Carver called Papa H. "a marvelous writer" and once said, "There was something about the cadence of those sentences that excited me."
There was always something about Carver's cadences that gave me a blood rush, an excitement generated from the page to the eye to the brain to the heart in the space of an eyeblink. It was like the joy of seeing new terrain for the first time, the way he formed his valleys and mountain ranges across the span of sentences.
It's a joy I haven't felt in a long time. Not until I picked up Chiappone's book, that is, and started reading his first story, "The Chubs," about a college student who ditches class to go fishing in creeks trickling past the town's chemical plants. The story, set in upstate New York, hooked me like a perfectly-tied Royal Wulff when I read sentences like these:
I could look out the mouth of the creek and down the big river and see the Chevy plant, and I was appalled. I swore that my life would never revolve in such a grubby little orbit, that my future would be different, special somehow. I think I believed that.
The boy's father startles him one day by skipping work at the chlorine gas plant to go fishing with him at the polluted creek. As his father drifts aimlessly through mid-life depression, the boy imagines his own future.
But what I could not see was myself...ten years down the road with a wife and children and none of the skills needed to support us. What I couldn't see were the layoffs and cutbacks and plant closings, the lines at the unemployment office stretching down Pine Avenue and around the corner, the past-due bills, the loans unpaid, the credit cards full and the checkbook empty. What I couldn't see was the journey back and forth across the continent in search of work, and a marriage collapsing as love gave way to shame and blame and the sure death of affection that goes with that whole life. What I couldn't see was me going to my father with my hand out like a beggar, like a stranger in need.
Can't you just hear that Carver drumbeat?
Chiappone's men and women lead lives of quiet desperation, clawing their way up the side of a crumbling dirt bank, falling back one step for every two taken, their fingers soiled and bleeding. Fortune and ruin are like the red and black spaces on a roulette wheel. You just never know where the ball's going to drop in these characters' lives. Most of the time, the luck is rotten. As one character observes, "That's the way it is. Some things move when you least expect them, others won't budge at all."
Chiappone, who now lives in Alaska, grew up in Niagara Falls, N.Y., where some of his stories are set. Others take place in a Central American jungle, an Aleutian Islands cannery, a Caribbean fishing charter, and a motel room in New Mexico--wherever the water of life is of an undetermined depth, wherever things won't budge, wherever men with miserable wives wonder "how many failures it would take before things started working out."
In "Q Roo," a Mexican fishing guide tries to placate his unhappy wife while putting up with an Ugly American client. In "Love A, Love B," a man can only confront his wife's infidelity while wearing a Halloween mask. In "Old Friend," a man checks out of gambler's rehab only to hear voices from his TV urging him to come join the action in the poker room.
Chiappone's eye (and ear) for detail is exceptional. He's obviously spent time with these stories, boiling sentences down to the bone. You learn everything you need to know about one character in the space of twenty-three words: "[He] combed his fingers through his hair. He held them under his nose. He could smell the forklift exhaust clinging to the hair oil."
As with Carver, what matters most is what's left unsaid on the page. Reading Water of an Undetermined Depth, I was uncomfortably familiar with these characters. They are the women buying bread and cigarettes at 2:30 a.m. in Safeway, they are the unreasonably cheerful tow-truck drivers in greasy overalls who pull me out of the snowy ditch, they are the pinch-faced drivers on the rain-slick streets who hunch over their steering wheels, they are the silently unhappy folks who swim past me every day like dark shadowy trash fish hoping one day to swim free of the polluted creek.
In Chiappone's fiction, there is pain, there is hope, but most of all there is the kind of tough, gritty, genuine writing that instantly snaps our brains to attention. Richard Chiappone is not some tweedy, brandy-sipping guy sitting in an ivory tower turning out tales of unrecognizable characters--he is one of us.
Ray C. would be damned proud.

Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2006-02-23
I've read this book from cover to cover. It was helpful to me. I am tasked with upgrading my 2000 Exchange to Exchange 2003 in a SAN environment, with high availablity as my goal. I've been administering Exchange for over 6 yrs now, so a book on how-to was not my expectation. I also own Exchange 2000 24seven, and have ordered the 2003 edition. The 24seven book is a very good reference guide in my opinion, and more along the lines of what you need if detailed directions are your desire. Do not buy this book if you are trying to pass a test.
Designed For Large Exchange Implementations.......2005-12-31
Being new to the MS Exchange world, I wanted a book that detailed installation, configuration, troubleshooting, etc.
This book is exhaustively detailed on the internals of Exchange, and how to maximize performance, backup, disaster recovery, etc. all from a large installation perspective.
I think this would be a great book for more experienced Exchange administrators and those who manage evironments with 1000s of users.
Please review the table of contents before purchasing to ensure that it covers the desired information.
The best Exchange book I have seen yet, but not PERFECT.......2005-04-23
I have not read the 24x7 book, but I have evaluated most of the other Exchange books on the market. This book has "actual" information from someone's experience - instead of just being a regurgitation from the Microsoft help manual. Several books on the market are truly weak regurgitations of the help file, unfortunately. Based on the review for the 24x7 book, I am buying a copy of that now. I checked out Boswell's Exchange book in the store the other day and didn't see the stuff that I was looking for in it. However, Bosewell has a good name and is usually very thorough. So, I would say that you should probably check out that book and the 24x7 book to see what you think about the people reviewing those.
This book has a lot of good information, and is worth the price. Many of the other Exchange books are just a waste of money. I did also buy the "Exchange Server 2003 Administrators Companion" as well as "Implementing Exchange Server 2003 70-284 study guide" from Microsoft Press. I recommend that you avoid the study guide because it REALLY sucks. The other book "Administrators Companion" is okay, but not as good as this one.
I hope this helps you - as you can tell, it is clearly a real review. Honestly, I would have given this 4.5 stars. However, since that is not an option, I gave it 5. I am sure someone will come along and give it a 4-star rating one of these days. I just didn't want to be the one to take this book down a notch because it is still the best Exchange book I own.
The Real Exchange 2003.......2004-06-01
The best book I have read on Exchange 2003. I have read about 10 books on exchange 5.5 - 2003 and most are full of dry how-to information with no thought behind the overall technology or processes. The text provides vast amounts information and practical examples of old and new technology. I like the honesty of the information provided, in that it is not full of Microsoft Marketing material but Real thoughtful info.
This is not a step by step how to manual or to be used for certification - although the experience of the text will help in certification.
For Exchange Admins new and old this is a great book in designing and operating an Exchange 2003 Environment. This is a must read.
