Book Description
One of the major intentions of the Conservative governments of the 1980s was to redraw the landscape and map of industrial relations. They aimed to achieve this through a combination of measures: political initiatives and campaigning; a changed economic and social environment; and most directly a programme of industrial relations legislation that increasingly curtailed the role and influence of trade union. This book examines the policies and associated legislation directly intended to change union behaviour. It considers origins, purpose and impact on union behaviour and structure, focusing on the role of ballots as the central mechanism chosen for changing union decision-making. The changes that occurred as a consequence of this legislation are placed in the wider union context and the relative influence of the balloting legislation is assessed against other developments affecting union behaviour, including the strategies adopted by the unions' leaders. It finds the results were not always as intended by the Conservative governments. In a concluding chapter the authors ask whether the framework created in the UK will be an exemplar or exceptional case when compared with developments in other European countries. The book itself is the result of research carried out over almost a decade by a highly experienced and respected team who base their analysis on interviews, detailed analysis of legislation and union rule books, and a series of in-depth case studies. This richly detailed and authoritative book will be essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand how the changing framework of labour relations affected changes in union behaviour. the book will thus appeal to students and academics working in industrial relations, human resource management, labour law, labour economics and politics. Employee relations practitioners and policy makers - managers and trade unionists - will also find it useful for increasing their understanding of the purpose and effect of the legislation.
Book Description
British Columbia sportscaster Hartley Miller began collecting sports quotes 20 years ago as his calling card to conclude each sportscast. What resulted is a compilation of more than 2,000 enlightening and entertaining quotes and quips that have delighted fans throughout North America for years. Now You Don't Say! presents over 1,000 of these selected quotations in one of the funniest and most illuminating sports books to ever roll off the court or field.
The book includes such quotables as:
" "I'm always suspicious of guys who've got a famous father." -George W. Bush, speaking to
Diamondbacks GM Joe Garagiola Jr. when the 2001 World Series champs visited the White House.
" "I didn't even know Elvis was from Memphis. I thought he was from Tennessee." -Memphis
Grizzlies draft pick Drew Gooden, on whether he planned to visit Graceland.
Miller did a winning job of capturing both the breadth of the sporting world and the appropriate context of the individual quotes and quips. Time after time, he explains the people and circumstances behind the quotations, which often results in the most humorous part of the item. From "Freudian Quips" and "Bad Boys, Bad Boys" to "Coach Approach" and "Yogi-isms" this book will make fans howl with delight.

Book Description
A step-by-step approach to solo jazz improvisation for piano. Learn to improvise using the techniques pioneered by piano greats Lenny Tristano and Dave McKenna. This methodical approach to learning the art of solo jazz piano improvisation will free your creative sense of music. It begins with a review of chord symbol interpretation, walks through bass line development, and ends with how to play several melodic lines simultaneously in stimulating musical conversation. You'll learn how to develop solos that embellish and support the melody, and use lead sheets to help you generate your own musical ideas. Twenty-one lessons present techniques, practice exercises, and tunes based on jazz standards. Notated transcriptions of sample improvisations illustrate each lesson's technique, and the accompanying CD lets you hear a master improviser put these ideas to work.
Customer Reviews:
It is an excellent book!.......2007-06-11
The book is very well organized. There is no deception on the part of the author or the publisher to sell this book. The details of the book clearly let you know what the book covers. As a student of jazz piano, intermediate, I find this book very helpful. I really like the way the author introduces the concepts and then gives examples and etudes to practice. It is one of the best jazz piano books I've bought. But it is not the only book I use to learn how to play jazz piano. You should have an open mind and study all you can from different books in order to progress musically. You'll find similarities in jazz beginner/intermediate piano books, but the good books, like this one, provide you with the proper guidance you need. In my opinion, Neil Olmstead "poured his heart out" in this book. As a music educator myself, I really appreciate the great effort Professor Olmstead put into writing this outstanding book.
In order to get another great insight on jazz piano improvisation, I also highly recommend the following book:
Mel Bay's Essential Jazz Lines: Piano Style of Bill Evans One of the authors of this book, Per Danielsson, offers a lot of great free guidance on jazz piano on the internet. Check out his web site.
I'm currently studying both books and I'm highly motivated to practice. Good luck with your jazz piano learning journey.
This book works against itself.......2007-01-25
This book has a wealth of information for people who want to develop their left hand in order to play solo jazz piano. The problem is, the author expects the reader to laboriously plow through tons of non-intuitive etudes with strange right-hand melodic lines in order to practice his techniques. It would be much more helpful, and much less confusing, if the author just provided left-hand etudes, or less unorthodox melody lines for the right hand. I was excited to approach this book, but I was really looking for a much more straightforward approach. (If I wanted to learn to play like Tristano, I would transcribe a difficult Tristano solo.)
Ok if you are new to jazz piano.......2007-01-05
I was looking for some ideas to improve my solo jazz piano playing, but found that if you are in any way a performing jazz pianist, you will find most of the exercises in this book are already familiar to you. It focuses a lot on walking bass lines. I was hoping for a little more in the way of ideas for intros reharm and such. A good book if you are not all too familiar with jazz piano playing, but not for anyone who is at more than intermediate level.
A Fine Book in What it Sets Out to Do.......2006-12-09
I bought several books recently to help me class up my fake book renditions (I'm a old rocker. I can read music with effort, but I'm much better at playing fake books), including this and Mark Levine's Jazz Piano. I'm still working through them, so some of this review may evolve over time. Random observations:
* I find the CD only marginally useful.
* The real strength in this book for me is the pacing. It slows me down, forcing me to spend time on fundamentals that I get tempted to skip over to get to the "fun part". It's a lot like having a real piano instructor saying, "Let's learn this first, and we'll get to that other stuff in good time when you're ready." Olmstead's teaching experience really shines through here.
* The slight differences in left hand voicings between Olmstead and Levine (Levine uses VII and III for bottom notes almost exclusively; Olmstead does not) were a little disorienting.
* Olmstead is kind enough to provide complete example songs with the same chord progressions as popular standards. He gives completely scored versions, and fake book renditions, depending on the lesson being taught. Very user-friendly, and no need to go find a fake book that tracks this volume.
* The traditional book binding is very inconvenient - it is hard to keep the book opened for practice and the book gets very beat up over time.
* This book gives a LOT of attention to walking bass lines, with very good explanations. It could be beneficial to beginning bass players despite the "solo piano" title. Even though I did not feel like I lacked in this area, I found this section worthwhile, and helpful to give me a vocabulary to communicate better with bass players.
* Due to the attention paid to the fundamentals, constructing strong improvised melody lines and interesting chord voicings don't get much attention.
* At a certain point the book jumps from basics to creating multi-part basslines and gets pretty advanced in parts. Even so, the author remains true to his promise and lays out the concepts clearly before throwing the student in the deep end of the pool.
This book and Levine's give you two perspectives on the same elephant. Both are valuable, and neither is really complete on its own (nor are they complete when combined). There is less overlap between the two books than one might expect. This book would be particularly gratifying to proficient music readers, because so much is written out, while Levine's is more gratifying to me because I take what he gives me and apply it to my fake books. We should all work on our weaknesses, so it is good that this book forces me to read music. This book and some hard work will do a fine job at creating the foundation of skills and knowledge that the author sets out to build.
Great beginning!.......2005-09-04
This is a good book for someone with basic Jazz theory knowledge. You still need have some foundation of Music Theory. It's a good book to be taken with supplemental teaching! Great recording eventhough does not follow the book(mostly his own voice leading).
Thanks for creating effort and teaching for those of us that involve with music and love of it!
Book Description
The perfect tonic for anyone who's sick of inspiring tales of triumph over adversity, Raw Deal chronicles the lives of 22 of America's most wretched victims--who did nothing wrong but nonetheless suffered horrible fates. 22 full page portraits.
Customer Reviews:
The format does it in........2005-02-24
In "Raw Deal," author Ken Smith has compiled twenty-two "horrible and ironic stories of forgotten Americans." And indeed, that is what they are. We read about "Star of the Monkey House," an African pygmy who was put on display at the Bronx Zoo and his ignoble future once he is discharged. And there's the story of Black Kettle, the Cheyenne chief who argued for peace before he was slaughtered by Custer. Plus the inventor of laughing gas who ended up dead in his prison cell at the age of thirty-three. And you'll learn why James Garfield was our unluckiest President. All of the stories are fascinating, well written, and accompanied by good pen and ink sketches. And each is more horrifying than the one before. But, none of them are very moving. How can you not be moved by Jerry Tarbot, the living unknown soldier from World War I who suffered from severe wounds, mustard gas poisoning, and shell shock which led to a long recovery process and finally total amnesia? Because, his life story is told in thirteen pages. It's difficult to build and maintain deep sympathy for any of these characters when their story is condensed into such a short space. For example, imagine the emotion involved when Tarbot visits an antiques shop he thought he might have worked in, only to find it was closed, but the owner lived across the street. He hurries to the home to discover they're holding the owner's funeral and another door is slammed in his face. In none of these stories do you enter the head of the subject to learn how he was feeling, what he is thinking. Again, it is not Smith's fault, but the problem is with the format. Each subject deserves at least one-third of a book, if not the whole book. Smith must have realized this, because at the end of the book he gives us a bibliography for each chapter, which lists entire books devoted to the individuals he has encapsulated. So, for each, you can learn the full story in possibly more dramatic terms. This book remains like an encyclopedia to lead the reader to further exploration of the topics contained within. To that end, it magnificently achieves its goal. But, it makes for not a very satisfying read.
The Real American Dream Realized.......2004-02-09
This book simply blew me away.Tragic in every sense of the word. The story of one of our most brilliant inventors hides among its pages. He jumped out of a 10-story window because corporate greed ruined his life. The story of the only human being in history with a 300 IQ. He suffered because a country full of Babbitts forced him to conform.Unable to do so,he died a pauper's death at 46.Too bad he pioneered the concept of Black Holes in the late 1920's and quite possibly rivaled Einstein in the realm of quantum physics. There are many more. All are Americans who suffered terribly.Simply one of the best books I ever read.It is worth it's weight in gold purely for obscure conversation value among friends who believe the lies thier schools taught them.
A very sobering take on what life holds for the unlucky few.......2000-05-22
I have purchased Ken's Guide to the Bible, and I liked his writing so much I got this book. I was not dissapointed! I always knew that the "underdog" never has gotten the recognition that they deserve....this book fixes all that. Its chock full of stories about people who really meant well (some of whom could have really changed the world for the better with their passions), but then get caught in the crosshairs of Big Money companies when their plans don't "go with the flow", and threaten the established system's moneymakers. You know that this kind of stuff happens all the time, and its only right that these poor souls get at least some semblance of respect in death, something that was denied them in life. Some of these stories will almost bring a tear to your eye, knowing that these victims recieved the full brunt of corporate vengeance and governmental greed.
Imagine a situation where an entire *company*, or and entire division of *government* is trying to take YOU down because of an invention you created that can make something that they have done obsolete (or because your trying save peoples lives by alerting them to something illegal and unsafe their doing), then be glad that it happened to someone else when you read about the hell that they go through as a result! Keep these stories in mind the next time you hear about some guy being squashed underfoot from big buisness....and know that stuff like this has, is, and will continue to happen! Kind of short, but a great read.
Wonderful in its exposition of what unfairness life may hold.......1999-07-28
This book is so well written. I wish so deeply that others will pick up a copy so that the people Ken Smith writes about shall not be forgotton in death as they were in life.
Eloquent Storytelling! Very enjoyable,though brutal,reading........1998-10-26
A fantastic collection of extreme and bizarre biographies, detailing the lives of down-trodden little guys getting brutally shafted, the way that little guys usually do. This book is a testament to the greed, ignorance and indifference to suffering of human beings. Ken wisely refrains from infusing too much personal opinion, and just lets these well-written short stories speak for themselves. It is left to the reader to make the plausible extrapolation that such injustices are still being perpetrated today. The only forces that have ever motivated human beings to abandon personal goals and attempt to improve the world are not the hollow and sanctimonious words of moralists, ministers and holy books encouraging people to "Love their neighbours" and "Do good deeds", but flaming and outrageous injustices. This book provides examples of these in abundance. Certain to awaken the moral sense of all but the most greedy and hard-hearted among us, this book is sure to bring a tear to the eye of every CEO and politician in the land. Please read this book and when you've finished, give the book to someone else to read. Alternatively, if you think that Ken Smith deserves a few more cents in royalties for his hard work, then buy them a brand new copy instead. As the final words on the back cover says: Some things are just not right!
Customer Reviews:
Better than HOW TO READ YOUR OPPONENTS CARDS.......2005-04-01
This may be the best book I've read on card placement and deduction, even better than Mike Lawrence's HOW TO READ YOUR OPPONENTS CARDS. And thats saying a lot because How To Read is a great book.
This book has many examples, and covers a wide range of inferential topics. There are sections for defenders, and how to confuse and mislead the opponents. You are really given the tools to solve a great number of hands. Its more than just counting, its using that information, and thinking about what the opponents might have done.
"Know" where every card is.......2003-05-02
The single most important skill in bridge is the ability to count the hands. Tips and techniques used by experts to "know" where every card is. This book is certain to improve your play and defense.

Customer Reviews:
Do not waste your time!.......2006-06-12
I'm used to read books about technology. My career (Computer Programming) involves constant actualization and besides that, I love reading a software book.
But this specific book, have kept me trying for more that 14 months, even when I usually read books off this kind of subject (Web Development) in something between two weeks and two months.
I finally decide to dump it, since I can't spend more time. I just got another book for the subject. And I did it after convince myself of the fact that this book is so slow, redundant, and poor that it can kill my enthusiasm.
This book has probably 50 pages (if you filter from the 863 printed) of good information.
If your time is valuable for you, and you need or want to learn the technology, this book is not for you.
Pretty cool book!.......2005-09-08
I found it very interesting! I would indicate this book for people that have previous knowledge in ASP and web technologies, beceuse if you don't, the content of the book will appear too difficult, but it's not. It gives you a good overview and introduction to .Net plattform. I recommend!
A Cautious "OK".......2005-05-30
This book is very good at teaching the concepts, but there are many mistakes that will really keep you on your toes. You can work around them, to be sure, but just be forwarned. The mistakes are everything from spelling (not really a big deal) to code errors, like semicolons where they dont belong and malformed code. One exercise involves a database that is supposed to be included in the download (from their site) but is not. The "errata" page on Wrox's site suggests you do a Google search in order to find and download the database.
It is a good book for learning ASP.net as well as a good lesson that proofreading is important.
Great Way to Come up to speed on VB.Net.......2005-04-12
Not sure why some folks say the title is misleading, the book indeed is specifically geared towards the beginning ASP.NET/VB.NET developer. No where does it mention learnig VB Studio. In fact I have VB studio, but I downloaded the Web Matrix software (free from MS) and I find it very easy to use and a good development environment.
I found the book to be very accurate and moves along at a very good pace, not trying to overwhelm the reader with too much detail early on. If you like to learn by coding (getting your feet wet) then this is the book for you. I like this approach, because you sort of figure things out as you go along, and at some point you begin to see the "big picture".
The exaples are very well thought out, and appropriate for the concepts being discussed. This book has enough examples to make it a good refrence book.
Does NOT use VB.NET 2003.......2004-06-24
I am amazed that Wrox (AKA Wiley Publishing) would title a book in such a deceptive manner.
Purchased the book and first thing I did was read "What you need to use this book?" - it clearly states "You do not need Visual Studio.NET in order to use this book." Instead - they expect you to download something called a Web Matrix...
Sure - it uses the .NET framework 1.1 but to me, and I am sure the vast majority of developers, if one sees "with VB.NET 2003" they are not expecting to be taught how to write code in Notepad...
Wrox - You have disappointed me
