So much I already knew.......2002-04-16

I consider myself a romantic. I'm about to graduate from college, and I have no idea what I'm going to do with my life. When I saw this book in my school's job placement office, I thought it looked like something I should read--careers for romantics! I'm romantic and I'm looking for a career. How perfect!

Sadly, this book is far from perfect. Many of the careers in this book--most of the careers, actually--don't appeal to me at all. Why would I want to be a wedding coordinator when I don't even want a wedding of my own? Romance doesn't always mean marriage. The only career in here that is a possibility for me is to be a romance novelist (mainly because that's what I plan on doing), but the book told me nothing that I didn't already know. Something I was hoping to find in this book was what I can do to support myself before my books start selling... but this had none of that. Other possible careers--like writing love letters for a living, seemed highly unlikely as viable careers. I don't think that many people want to buy letters that someone else wrote--especially not enough to make a living off of. I need to make a living. This book did not help me at all.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the textile industry's workforce underwent a dramatic transformation, as African Americans entered the South's largest industry in growing numbers. Only 3.3 percent of textile workers were black in 1960; by 1978, this number had risen to 25 percent. Using previously untapped legal records and oral history interviews, Timothy Minchin crafts a compelling account of the integration of the mills.

Minchin argues that the role of a labor shortage in spurring black hiring has been overemphasized, pointing instead to the federal government's influence in pressing the textile industry to integrate. He also highlights the critical part played by African American activists. Encouraged by passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, black workers filed antidiscrimination lawsuits against nearly all of the major textile companies. Still, Minchin notes, even after the integration of the mills, African American workers encountered considerable resistance: black women faced continued hiring discrimination, while black men found themselves shunted into low-paying jobs with little hope of promotion.

You'll need to buckle down to study this one as a text & not a reference book. If you don't have the attention span for a dense textbook, you'll wind up using this book as a reference text. If you're looking for something easier to study from, get: "Everything You Need To Know About the Music Business" by Donald Passman.

A crucial text that goes way back to its first printing in 1969.

I highly recommend this book to gain greater insights in the Music business or any business. Its one of the best books your ever buy on the music Industry. The music business is a cruel and vindictive world where many people perish looking for the best deal and young artists are crushed because they have no experience in dealing with the legal aspects and mostly don't have the people skills tu survive in a cruel world like this hwre every weak point is axploited and taken advantage of.Most people don't understant that without a proper knoledge of this system succes is improbable, this book comes as an aid for those trying to make it big in the music industry, explaining almost all of the steps needed for complete success.

I encountered this book on a low shelf at the main library of the hebrew university in jerusalem, while looking for a certain photography book, and quickly and curiously took it out, its title being simmilar to a theses i was going to write. as i opened the pages and looked through them, i felt both amazed at all the subjects it aims to cover, and a little sorry, that someone else has already done something which i had thought of doing. so i took it home, (still have it!) and read it. it has fulfilled my expectation and is a serious book about the representation of the past in museums and heritage centers, something which is taken for granted as both `educational` and `entertaining`. in the book the processes leading to the creation and maintenance of heritage centers and museums are analysed seriously, with a light marxist-postmodern bend, but a well researched and convincing presentation. case studies are presented and various strategies for making the representation of the past, both conceptually and socialy, a better one. although it deals specifically with england, i found his statements and anlyses convincing for my country, israel, a land smitten with heritage and memory in a unique way. my comments deal with two areas, (each taking half a star off its rating!). there is no visual material at all, no photographs, plans or diagrams. in a book dealing with representations in the real world, something so rife in visuality, this is a serious drawback, as so many meanings would be far better and more widely understood with the proper visual material. as the very subject matter of the book is visual it is a pity that the analyses it includes do not contain visual readings of museum presentations. the other point is the whiff of serious and judicious thinking about a subject which should be also fun and games. it assumes a seriousness on the part of visitors and downplays the need of heritage centers to get people interested at all, and most challenging of all, to get a place in their own memories. so anyway, chapeau! and i have recommendad it all it all around!.

Instantly, I was able to use photoshop. Get this book. It will be a quick read. It explains on one or two pages, each task you wish to perform. Once you master the material in this book, you can progress to more elaborate procedures and more technical books. The perfect beginners book.

Decent quick reference, poor for teaching yourself.......2005-12-10

If you already know how to use another photo-editing program and you're transitioning to PhotoShop, this might just be the book for you. It has a rather clever and innovative way to show exactly where on a cluttered screen the item under discussion is, and it also has some decent "quick tips". The examples are also pretty good. However, I don't see how anyone can claim to write a book that will "teach" you a software program if it doesn't give you exercises to work your way through; Photoshop is way too powerful and complex to learn without also practicing. It also doesn't explain why you might want to use any of its myriad features/effects/filters. But as I said, if you're transitioning from another program and you already know what any photo-editing program should do, this could be an excellent choice.

This book was great for me. I am a web application developer (database and code not graphics) and all I need to know is basics and I don't want to spend hours, days, years to learn it. This book is quick and concise and gets you going without having to wade through exhaustive text. If you are a graphics artist that does photoshop all day, every day, then get a book that is intended for learning that depth of knowledge. If you are a typical person that just needs to create or edit stuff for occasional professional use or just at home, this is a great book.

Easy to read and follow, but skims the surface of the program. There is so much more to learn, so many tools and functions that it never even covers, especially some of the stuff that is new to the CS2 version like placing type on a path.
