Not everyone can be a rock star, movie star, or TV personality, but that doesn't mean that you can't bask in at least a little limelight. There's just as much going on behind the scenes as in front of the cameras and mikes: acquisitions, legal affairs, production, publicity, talent, marketing—these are just a few of the job areas in which you can make your mark in the entertainment industry. And there are jobs aplenty, though you'll find a lot of competition for them. The reason: entertainment is one of the last fields in which the little guy—or doll—can start at the bottom and claw to the top with hard work, resourcefulness, and a little bit of luck. At least, that's the view of itself that Hollywood projects. Want the inside scoop? Check out Careers in Entertainment: The WetFeet Insider Guide. Off the record, on the QT, and very hush-hush.

5 out of 5 stars just starting out.......2003-04-10

if you're a person who's just starting out (24 years old) and really interested in breaking into the entertainment industry (on the biz side of things), then this guide is something you'll want to pick up. my college advisor suggested i look into it, and i did. i've since moved to LA and looked up all of the alums connected to the industry and now have an internship at a big music label. this guide gave me the big picture, got me in the right frame of mind to figure out whether it was movies or music that i wanted to focus on (since i love both on a personal level!) ... i'm still open to moving into film, but for now, i'm happy where i am. thanks to wetfeet for getting me grounded and off to a good start.

5 out of 5 stars Nice General Overview.......2003-03-07

This guide was helpful in getting a general picture of what behing-the-scenes careers can be had in entertainment. It covers television, music, and the movie industry, so it was really helpful in my decision as to just where in the entertainment industry I want to be. Note that this is not a guide for breaking into the industry as a performer. But for those of you who think you might want to run the show instead, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the starstruck!.......2001-12-18

I've had a couple of showbiz internships but no steady job. This book to helped me get get the big picture on the Biz and refine my career goals. I feel my big break is a lot closer now. Very highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful for those who know NOTHING in Entertainment Jobs.......1999-11-07

For those who are just entering the industry, I recommend this book. I have been in the industry for approx. 2 years now. I didn't learn anything I didn't already know, except maybe the salaries of various job titles. New to the Industry? Buy it! Been in the Industry for a while? Never mind!

          Book Description

Challenging proponents of equal pay for comparable worth, Steven Rhoads argues that implementation has been plagued by critical and insurmountable problems. Where success has been most frequently touted--in Minnesota, England, and Australia--job evaluation results are often arbitrary and political rather than objective.

"The Bare Facts Video Guide" helps you locate actresses' nude scenes on video tapes and DVDs. The entry for each actress lists their film and television credits. The films they have disrobed in appear in bold face followed by a rating on how "good" the scene is, the hours and minutes when it occurs and a description of what's uncovered. There are no photographs and it only reviews "mainstream" actresses in their G through R-rated films.

3 out of 5 stars Decent enough, but not the ultimate.......2006-04-10

This book is a good alternative to Mr. Skin's Skincyclopedia, but alas, is still not as complete as Mr. Skin's website. Therein is a very complete, and constantly updated database of nudes throughout film history. For a fee, you can even see videoclips and still photos of all there is to see. Okay book.
                      Great site. Go there now!

4 out of 5 stars What you Want to See is What You Get.......2005-08-04

Mr. Hosada has been publishing this information since his earliest version in 1989. The earlier versions included "Actors" as well as "Actresses." In the late 1990s he released "Updates", additions to previous volimes. This edition has "Actresses" only. He has continued to update the filmographies of the actresses, so you can see other works, as well as the "Bare Facts", which makes it useful as a reference. I have not cross-referenced from the earlier editions, but the book doesn't seem to have dropped earlier information to add new information (other than the deletion of "Actors") unlike some reference books on films on TV and Video, where older movies get dropped to allow room for new ones.
His ratings are factual, and he doesn't use "cutesy" terminology.
Desirable addition to a movie documentation collection as well as an incentive to look for obscure movies to see some of the "Bare Facts."

5 out of 5 stars GREAT RESOURCE MATERIAL.......2005-01-04

Absolutely the best resource material for videos. The amount of detail and exact time sequences is unrivaled. This is the type of job I want. The only downer is that this book is not updated on a yearly basis and we have to wait every 3-4 years for new material. I keep up on the releases and am always one of the first to order the book.

                      Book Description

"The Bare Facts Video Guide" helps you locate actresses' nude scenes on video tapes.

Some of the new entries for the 1998 Edition are: Gillian Anderson, Beth Broderick, Yancy Butler, Diahann Carroll, Kathryn Erbe, Angie Everhart, Heather Graham, Alex Kingston, Courtney Love, Natascha McElhone, Meilani Paul, Jaime Pressly, Lela Rochon, Charlize Theron, Andrea Thompson, Tamlyn Tomita, Ming-Na Wen, Peta Wilson, Vivian Wu and Roxana Zal.

4 out of 5 stars The Naked Truth.......1999-12-07

The current version of the Bare Facts Video Guide is the updated version circa 1998. All of the previous versions have kept the same basic format, but for one change. The earlier versions contained male exposure information, this was dropped recently. Craig Hosada has done a remarkably thorough job of assembling a vast collections of movie titles and then giving the goods on the female star's exposure. Craig's dirty mind is quite nimbly in the right place. If you need to know whether your favorite female star has been shown more then just a lot of cleavage this book will tell you where and when. If your really in a hurry the running time in minutes where the scene appears is also provided. So as to not waste any more time the scene is rated for adequacy of exposure. One second, two seconds, three seconds, even description of body parts exposed. Is this a quality reference book or what? I like to use this book when deciding whether the next cable movie coming on is worth staying awake for. My only criticism is the editions are slow to print, this means that what's appearing on my TV is not always listed. Maybe a Website with the newest updated info since the last edition would rectify this. Keep up the good work Craig. Quite a way to make a living.

                              Book Description

A vital feature of American culture in the nineteenth century was the growing awareness that the literary marketplace consisted not of a single, unified, relatively homogeneous reading public but rather of many disparate, overlapping reading communities differentiated by interests, class, and level of education as well as by gender and stage of life. Tracing the segmentation of the literary marketplace in nineteenth-century America, this book analyzes the implications of the subdivided literary field for readers, writers, and literature itself.

With sections focusing on segmentation by age, gender, and cultural status, In the Company of Books analyzes the ways authors and publishers carved up the field of literary production into a multitude of distinct submarkets, differentiated their products, and targeted specific groups of readers in order to guide their book-buying decisions. Combining innovative approaches to canonical authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott, Mark Twain, and Henry James with engaging investigations into the careers of many lesser-known literary figures, Sarah Wadsworth reveals how American writers responded to—and contributed to—this diverse, and diversified, market.

"In the Company of Books" contends that specialized editorial and marketing tactics, in concert with the narrative strategies of authors and the reading practices of the book-buying public, transformed the literary landscape, leading to new roles for the book in American culture, the innovation of literary genres, and new relationships between books and readers. Both an exploration of a fragmented print culture through the lens of nineteenth-century American literature and an analysis of nineteenth-century American literature from the perspective of this subdivided marketplace, this wide-ranging study offers fresh insight into the impact of market forces on the development of American literature.

4 out of 5 stars A great overview of the openings for new players.......2002-07-26

This book is great for those players trying to decide what type of opening systems are best for them.

The Penguin Book provides an overview of all the common opening variations. And by reading over this book, a player will gain a valuable familiarity with almost all of the openings that he is likely to encounter over the board. This book does not dive deep into any specific opening, but rather gives the reader a basic understanding of all of them.

I read this book when I was rated about 1400. It was my first opening book and I feel that it gave me a great foundation to build on.
After reading this book, I realized what openings suited my style best. And I later purchased books specifically focused on the openings I had chosen.
But it all began with this book.

I am now rated approxamately 1900 and own hundreds of chess books. But I will always appreciate this one for getting me started in the right direction.

                                Book Description

One of the secrets to the ever-increasing popularity of Windows Server can be found in the simplicity its administration. The easy-to-use GUI, consistent set of tools, and wizards that walk you through complex tasks allow you to install, configure and maintain Windows servers without any knowledge of programming or scripting languages or learning complicated command-line syntax. It's possible, in fact, to accomplish about 90% of all Windows administration without ever opening a command prompt or running a script! But what about the other ten percent of the time? While it's true that most common, day-to-day tasks of Windows administration can be performed from the GUI, it's not always the best way, especially with complex or repetitive tasks Scripts and command-line tools often provide a faster, more flexible approach. Windows Server Hacks reveals techniques that go well beyond basic management tasks found in most handbooks to help busy system administrators master the more powerful features of Windows Server. Windows Server Hacks focuses on scripts and other tools that will make your life as an administrator much easier. These tools, or hacks--quick and dirty solutions to problems, or clever ways of doing things--were created by other professionals who've also had to struggle to find solutions to administering Windows environments. You'll save valuable time using their scripts, tools, tips, and advice. Plus, you can easily learn to customize the scripts to create even more powerful tools for your own, specific needs. The book includes secrets of the masters in such areas as Active Directory, User Management, Group Policy, DNS and DHCP, File and Print, IIS, performance and security. The hundred, industrial strength hacks in the book range from those that deal with general administration to more esoteric hacks in the areas of network deployment, patch management, and backup and recovery. No matter which Windows server you use--NT, IIS, 2000, or 2003--this book will put the knowledge and expertise of veteran system administrators and hackers to work for you. Windows Server Hacks will make your life easier while expanding your understanding of the capabilities of Windows Server.

3 out of 5 stars Overall a good reference, but needs more examples.......2006-05-04

I had a need to run a .exe file on a remote machine. So I typed in the "ExecuteAll.vbs" script example from page 27. The script runs and prompts me for the information. But the command I feed to the script never executes on the remote server. The command can be run manually on the remote server. So I know the command is good. I even tried the command that's shown as an example and even that didn't work.

Overall the book is good. But more examples of different ways to utilize the scripts in the book would be a plus.

                                4 out of 5 stars Good book....but mislabled?.......2006-03-14

The definition of "hack" is as follows:
To write or refine computer programs skillfully.
To use one's skill in computer programming to gain illegal or unauthorized access to a file or network.

This is a good book.....the name should be changed, however, to "Windows Server Shortcuts and Tricks"....not "hacks".

The book has many good tips, tricks and shortcuts to make life easier for the administrator. I'm always buying books to make sure I am as knowledgeable as possible. This book has good information for my daily job tasks and I recommend it. But I was surprised not to find any "hacks" per se.....something using NMAP or another program used to attack NetBIOS....this is not THAT kind of book.

4 out of 5 stars Ideal for the Windows Administrator.......2004-07-29

This squat 350 page book is filled with practical advice for anyone tasked with the administration of one or more Windows servers. It covers simple remote machine management, Active Directory, IIS, and the truly annoying Windows DNS issues. Screen shots are kept to a minimum and graphics are used effectively. Concepts are explained but not rat-holed and the topics covered are practical. The only thing keeping me from giving this a perfect ranking are the often longish code samples that are not annotated and could be referenced on the site as opposed to included in the text.

A must have for starting Windows administrators, definitely worth the look for experienced ones, particularly because of the condensed practical nature of the text with Microsoft Press books so often lack.

                                  Book Description

Essential reading for any IT security organization, Hack Proofing Windows 2000 Server takes on a single, vital feature of Windows 2000 Server operations and explains its many aspects, both conceptually and practically. It expertly documents processes and explains complicated architectures through experience and research. The authors include directions on how to use security services, including Kerberos and the Encrypting File System (EFS). Most of the coverage examines behind-the-interface operations, relying on flow diagrams and uncluttered conceptual drawings to illustrate processes like smart-card authentication and the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). Question-and-answer sections at the end of each chapter are well-chosen; one example asks about using 128-bit encryption across an international network.
