This is my favorite book to give to new fund raisers or people considering fund raising as a career.
Dr. Wagner's book is insightful. From understanding the history of fund raising and philanthropy to finding the right job, this book examines the major topics one should consider when considering a career in fund raising.
The book won the Skystone Ryan Prize for research on fundraising and philanthropy for good reason.

Ms. Wagner does an excellent job on helping the reader understand how fundraising fits into the world today, including concrete suggestions on how to be the best professional. By enlisting other experts in the field, Ms. Wager taps into a wealth of information that expands her own understanding and expertise. I first purchased this book as someone who was in the middle of a career change. I was able to use the information in this book to help identify the direction I wanted to take. As I am now looking into the next phase of my career, I am using tapping into the information in this book to help as I plan my next steps.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone either entering into, or already in, the fundraising profession.
Required reading!.......2006-07-13
One thought that struck me as I read this book is that I wish it had been available when I made a career switch several years ago. I recommend it to individuals who engage me for career networking interviews. It also provides a good uplift to professionals already in the field - the numerous resources are worth the price of the book alone! The book is very readable and full of wonderful advice and wisdom - a trademark of the author.

Of the many attempts to discover Jack the Ripper's identity, few omit the name of James Kenneth Stephen, tutor to Queen Victoria's eldest grandson, fondly known as Prince Eddy. While Stephen superficially fit the profile investigators established, was he really capable of the demented violence perpetrated by England's most famous serial killer?
This volume takes an in-depth look at the life and experiences of James Kenneth Stephen, examining the relevant evidence and attempting to determine whether or not Stephen could actually have been involved in the Ripper murders. Delving into what little is known of Stephen's early years, the work discusses his relationship with his mother and his family's struggle with a hereditary mental illness. It follows him through his formative years at Eton, which he considered his true home and where he was introduced to the Greek notion of homosexuality. The work's primary focus is Stephen's relationship with Prince Eddy, who also became a suspect in the infamous London murders. The way in which Stephen's life intertwined with those of Prince Eddy and Montague Druitt, another Ripper suspect, is examined in detail. Other incidents of the fateful fall of 1888 and Stephen's final surrender to mental illness are also discussed. Appendices contain Stephen's poetry and details regarding his family ancestry.

Misleading!.......2007-08-27
The subtitle of this book is "The Evidence Linking James Kenneth Stephen to the Whitechapel Murders". It should actually read "The Evidence NOT Linking James Kenneth Stephen to the Whitechapel Murders".....but then the book's prime selling point would have been eradicated. The added cover anouncement of a forward by Colin Wilson (one of the world's foremost Ripperologists) is also misleading in that given the subtitle and Wilson's foreword, the unwary buyer of this book is led to a quick conclusion that J.K. Stephen may well have been Jack the Ripper! Yet the book, and the foreword (once read) disavow this notion. The possible connection between Stephen and the Ripper murders comprises about 15% of the book, the rest of the text being a too-detailed bio of the lives of Stephen, Prince Eddy and another Ripper suspect named Druitt. While the lives of all three men are interesting in their own right, the book is tedious in its reliance on text quotations and detail that is, quite simply, just not needed. Rather Ms. McDonald focused more on her subtitle's implications....because there is, indeed, alot to the theory that J.K. Stephen was, in fact, Jack the Ripper. This conclusion was more directly addressed in two previous texts from years ago. So - while this book uses Jack the Ripper as its selling point - it in fact has very little to do with both the Ripper and the truly interesting feasibility of his identity. Plus - whilst Stephen's life is an interesting and tragic tale, as told so dryly and needlessly detail-laden as done in this book, it is neither dramatically, evocatively or interestingly related. A pity. A missed opportunity.

Two prominent cases of quasi-fiscal operations, sterilized interventions and the accumulation of junk assets due to indirect financing of the government, can impair the financial soundness of central banks and thereby also independence. This is analyzed for selected central banks in Central and Eastern Europe and the CIS countries and for Turkey. The article concludes that sterilization costs tend to be more important in new EU member countries, whereas junk assets play a more vital role on central banks' balance sheet in Turkey and in some CIS countries.

The only Schiller book worth owning.......2003-05-19
This is a good book. It's fun, interesting, and sometimes enthralling. The book can be hard to put down.
This does not enable you to beat offbeat openings. That requires years of experience. There is no magic pill. A better player will usually beat you from an inferior position. A master will beat you even if he gives you odds (a free move or a missing piece). This book helps you to compete with players at your own level who are tyring to get an easy victory by surprising you.
Most openings have only about half-a-column of information. Some have several pages, with one or two complete games for illustration. This is not the place to learn a repertoire. It's a place to gain some confidence that you can equalize early.
It's also a place to get some ideas. Why not throw an offbeat opening at your friends now and then? "All openings are playable by non-masters," sayeth a wise man. Have some fun. Create some very strange-looking positions.
As long as you aren't hoping to win in the opening, but only to get through it, this is a very good book.
And it is the ONLY book by Schiller about which the opposite could not be said. Most of his books are riddled with errors, outlined with deceptively useless disorganization, ladden with overwhelming quantities of data, and marred with occasionally suspicious analysis. This book is the opposite in every way. Some people give the credit to Watson's contribution to the annotations, but I think Schiller simply spent more time on this one. His other books show hints of utility but fail in the details.
The point is this: Don't let Schiller's other books deter you from buying this one. It really is a decent book. 3 1/2 stars.
Misleading Part 2.......2000-08-21
Forgot to add, author/contributor Eric Schiller is nothing more than a mouthpiece for Dogmatic ideas. He wouldn't know an original chess idea if it came up and bit him on his you know what. His mentality is the sort that attacked Aron Nimzowitsch's ideas before Nimzo proved his critics wrong. Take anything that Schiller or his associates say with a grain of salt.
Misleading.......2000-08-21
An entertaining book, yet lacking any real refutations to irregular openings for the average to club player. Irregular openings are played for a reason, for shock value. Of course highly ranked players usually defeat such openings, not because the opening itself is inferior (in most cases) but because the player facing these openings is quite simply the better player. I have seen highly ranked players use irregular openings with success against players supposedly booked up on how to combat them. If IM Michael Basman and Deep Blue can win with 'garbage' like the Grob against other Masters, then obviously it's not as bad as it's reputation. This book is merely a starting point for ideas on how to combat such openings. If a particular opening is causing you difficulties, get your best software program out and research the problem yourself. If anything, this book shows players who use irregular openings the possible defences/attacks they can expect, which will just confuse the issue even further. I give this book a 3 star rating, which i consider neutral, because it actually helps *both* the player facing these openings and the player who uses them.
This book is not only good, it's fun!.......1998-07-21
When was the last time you heard that about a chess book? Schiller and Watson have created a great little battle manual for facing all the wild, weird and wacky openings that are popular among a certain group of players. The title is a bit of a misnomer, though. Not every line given is truly "busted" in this book. And some that are rather dubious, like the Philidor Countergambit are not exposed for the frauds that they are. Further, not all the best lines are given (an impssible task in any event) which makes chapters on such important and often-seen lines as the Morra-Smith Gambit in the Sicilian too short. But the unique symbology used by the authors and the overall tone of the book is a lot of fun and worth every penny of the asking price. If you are a regular tournament player you know how annoying garbage like the Grob's can be -- buy this book and be done with it forever!

The above site will provide a more elaborate review and is highly recommended. Jeremy Silman rates this as an essential part of any chess library. If you play at a club and you're tired of facing unusual systems of play, this book is not only handy but quite entertaining. He mentions that the quality of the analysis comes from Watson, something you should be aware of when you are in the market for chess books in general... It's not a perfect book, but then again, can you name any?

Great Director MX Book!.......2006-03-15
This is a great reference book - the author says it is not really meant to be read all the way through and it is described as not for beginners, but I think any Director user except perhaps the most advanced could benefit from this book either as a reference or complete read or both. I especially like all of the side notes scattered throughout the book, plus the troubleshooting and Did You Know? sections at the end of each chapter. His descriptions of some components of Lingo were the first I've read that I really understood. He also includes 7 bonus chapters and a Lingo reference on the CD! This book is packed with info, and even though it is now one version of Director behind the current one, I still recommend having it on your reference shelf. If you really use Director for either work or play, you won't regret it!

I really don't have to get into detail. This is the book you want to have when you need something to go back on and read. This is the 1st book that helped me the most i only used 4 books but this one was the one that made me go back and read up again and me as a person that hates to read, I learn a ton of stuff from this very book. I'm telling you right now no one here can tell you all the details this one book has but if you pick it up and read it you will see for your self that this book is worth more then it cost. He even has a mixure of games inside the cd its crazy. This book chills in my back pack when i need some lingo codes and which im back in director for the 3d field im just useing it to bring back the old codes which this book holds. All i can tell you is that this is a great book for director and perhaps one of the best i have encounter you won't regrate it trust me on that.

This book states it's the only Director MX book you will ever need ... well, it's TRUE. Buy it, you will not be disappointed. Director is a great tool. Especially if you have a programming background, you will embrace the power of Lingo to create multimedia applications. This book shows some of the best Lingo examples I have seen up to now in Director books. It's good as a learning book and it's equally good as a reference book.
