4 out of 5 stars Cruise Line Employment Report.......2001-02-09

This book gives you a wonderful list of cruise companys and an insite into each one. This includes the different ships owned by each company as well as helpful information like size, staffing requirements and ports of call. . With useful addresses to contact. However, it does not contain information about how to get a job in the cruise industry. If you are looking into different companys and what they provide it is an invaluble source of information.

5 out of 5 stars Cruise Ship Employment Handbook.......2000-04-24

5 stars why? Well because of this book I am making tons of money and traveling all over the Caribbean.

A friend of mine suggested that I try out for a cruise line position, she previously had obtained employment by using this manual, so I figure if she could do it so could I, By using this handbook, and following the tips and instructions. I am now a full time employee on Carnaval. I felt that I had to tell people about this book and give thanks to the folks over at International Jobs for helping me make a dream come true. If you are serious about working on a cruise ship don't think twice about it, this handbook is the key.

Thanks Amazon for giving me the chance to express my gratitude.

        Book Description

The economic success of East Asia is often attributed to the relationship between state and business. In b /b b i The State and Industry in South Korea, /i /b Jong-Chan Rhee presents a more balanced view of Korea's "industrial miracle". Examining the limits of a strong authoritarian state as a vehicle for intervening in the market or for sponsoring liberal reform, the author focuses on how state-controlled industrial adjustment in Korea has succeeded and failed. This is clearly illustrated by an examination of unsuccessful state intervention in the heavy industry and chemical sectors which led to the breakdown of the state-business governing coalition. This is contrasted to the successful transformation of these same industries in the 1970s. However, the mid-1980s unsuccessful attempts at liberalization led to the failure of many enterprises. Further insights into these limitations are provided by a comparison with state-industry relations in Japan and France.

Of all the recent collections assembled from the archives of MAD magazine, this volume might be the most interesting. It shows the beginnings of the magazine as a comic book, its transformation into a "slick" three years later in 1955, and its settling down into a familiar format under the stewardship of Al Feldstein.

The early material, as tame as it is by today's standards, shows quite clearly what the hubbub was all about: Harvey Kurtzman, Willie Elder, Wally Wood, and the rest parody comic characters with a zany zest that is infectious. This book boasts color reproductions of MAD's comic book highlights, including "Starchie," "Superduperman," and "Batboy and Rubin." Many readers will remember these stories, if not from the first time around, then from the Ballantine paperback collections so ubiquitous in the 1960s and '70s. MAD About the Fifties shows MAD's tentative transformation into an American institution; this tentativeness, far from being a drawback, results in the only experimental period in the humor magazine's 45-year run (who knew that Stan Freberg, Bob and Ray, and Ernie Kovacs contributed?). Kurtzman's departure in 1956 brought in Al Feldstein, who would expand the magazine's appeal from the thousands to the millions. Purists are still debating whether this was a good idea or a sellout--MAD About the Fifties allows you to decide for yourself.

Aside from historical pop culture interest and the powerful desire among aficionados to complete the set, (MAD About the Sixties and MAD About the Seventies were released previously), MAD About the Fifties also includes some darn funny material. As usual, the art has aged better than the writing--but what art it is! Few have been better than Wood, Elder, Kurtzman, Davis, Jaffee, Martin, and all the rest. MAD About the Fifties contains more of their gems; it deserves a space in any MAD reader's library. --Michael Gerber

5 out of 5 stars The original 50's Humor in a Jugular Vein of "Mad" magazine.......2002-08-14

I have the complete "Mad" from the E.C. Collection, which is limited to just the original comic book from the Fifties, not to be confused with the black & white magazine that has been a rite of passage for adolescents for the past half century. "Mad" was the only title to survive the purge at E.C. in the wake of the adoption of the comics book code, which put an end to "Tales from the Crypt" and its cousins. To get something of a hint about what this was about, check out the article "Baseball is Ruining Our Children" by "Frederick Werthless, M.D." Obviously, this is as thinly veiled as you can get in going after Fredric Wertham, the infamous author of "Seduction of the Innocent."

Anyhow, "Mad About the Fifties" presents some of the best of both the original comic and the early magazine. The Foreword consists of a brief history of the origin of "Mad" and its early days. The first half is devoted to the comic book years (1952-55) features 18 of the first 22 covers (including the infamous Composition cover). Among the classic stories reprinted in color are "Lone Stranger," "Superduperman," "Melvin of the Apes," "Ping Pong," "Sherlock Shomes," "Bat Boy and Rubin," "Starchie," and "Mickey Rodent." No scared cows here, boys and girls, as everybody is fair game. You will notice that a lot of the subject comes from the comics and the movies, although one of the two black & white stories from this period is "Howdy Dooit."

When "Mad" became a black & white magazine (1955-59), the E.C. gang broadened their horizons. In addition to a couple dozen covers reproduced in color, there are some choice selections of some of the great magazine ad parodies from that period (e.g., "Great Moments in Medicine: Presenting the Bill" from "Park-David"). Another recurring gag from this period was the "Confidential Information Dept." which looks at coverups regarding George Washington, Capt. John Smith, and Snow White (separate articles, people, separate articles). Particularly timely now would be the feature on "Elvis Pelvis." Historical footnote: The most controversial thing in this magazine was apparently the "Bringing Up Bonnie Prince Charlie" from the "Comic Strip Heroes (Taken From Real Life)" feature, which was reprinted in a British tabloid where it caused a stir.

My biggest surprise in reading through the early "Mad" magazines was the use of celebrity writers, which included Stan Freberg, Ernie Kovacs, Tom Lehrer, Danny Kay, Bob and Ray, and Sid Caesar. However, most of us will remember the artists: Jack Davis, Wallace Wood, Kelly Freas, Joe Orlando, Harvey Kurtz man, and Don Martin. I was sort of surprised that the magazine provided less parodies than we would normally expect (they do takeoff on "The Ed Sullivan Show," "Gunsmoke" and "Perry Mason").

I checked this out because I am working on a history of American popular culture for the 20th century going decade by decade for class and one of the best ways to find out what everybody was talking about is to see who was being made fun of by "Mad." But you definitely have to know a little bit about the time to enjoy the humor (e.g., who was married to Elizabeth Taylor at any given point in the decade, who was Hyman Rickover, what was Hi-Fi, etc.). There are companion volumes for the Sixties and Seventies, and one can assume "The Usual Gang of Idiots" will continue to turn out this volumes from time to time as the years go by.

        4 out of 5 stars Historic Humor.......1999-12-09

I would urge anyone interested in contemporary US history to buy this book or any other of the "MAD About The...." titles. MAD defined, reflected and revolted an era. There is so much more here than meets the F.B.I. It's fun, moves at a pretty good pace, aids digestion, calms jittery nerves and will shrink hemmorhoids without surgery!

5 out of 5 stars Peace and love, baby, Alfred's back!.......1999-10-10

This book is a shagadelic romp through the pages of MAD magazine with reproductions of the most hilarious spoofs and parodies of the 60's. Movie takeoffs include "201 Minutes of a Space Idiocy", "East Side Story" and "Flawrence of Arabia". TV satires include "Star Blecch", "Bananaz", "The Man From A.U.N.T.I.E.", "The Pwgitive", "Lizzie", and "Hokum's Heroes".

I was a kid in the 60's and enjoyed the original magazines. But when we moved from Seattle to the thriving metropolis of Olympia, WA, the magazines were given away to neighborhood pals. If, like, me, MAD Magazine was a part of your life back then (and hopefully it still is), you'll rediscover your funnybone and stay home from work with a bad case of laughing sickness while you pore through this tome.

If not for you, give a copy as a gift. And if a buddy or relative is in the hospital convalescing, I guarantee that the gift of this book will lift their spirits!

          Book Description

Professional wrestling revels in its exaggeration of masculinity. This hyper-masculinity is evident in the physical appearance of wrestlers, the sexuality-charged and violent moves used in and out of the ring, the role assigned to women and the extensive use of weapons such as chains, barbed wire and steel folding chairs. This study explores the link between watching televised wrestling matches and increases in verbal aggression, rebellion and propensity toward violence and retaliation. Wrestling is placed within the larger context of popular culture and other hyper-masculine entertainment.

The book begins with a brief history of professional wrestling, a summary of the criticisms of the sport, and a discussion of the author's research methods. One chapter discusses how gender socialization plays a part in the effects of wrestling on its viewers, arguing that wrestling goes beyond the image of physically violent acts to models of interpersonal behavior. The expansion of wrestling into storylines outside the ring includes problem situations involving class, race, homophobia and nationality, to which violence is often presented as a solution. The book concludes with an investigation of the attractiveness of wrestling and its ability to lure fans back year after year.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Unreal Script Book OK Intro to programming book.......2007-09-04

This is book is not really about UnrealScript. It is an introduction to programming tough though Unreal Script. The book spends more time going over how to use tools than how to use the language. It appears the author set out to write a better book but had to finish in a weekend. I would not recommend this book for people like me looking for advances in UnrealScript and the classes of UT2004. I also would not recommend this book due to some LARGE mistakes in programming foundations. Not a good book for people looking to start game design. I wish I could have a refund.

          4 out of 5 stars A Good Start..........2007-05-12

While this book doesn't actully get into writing funtional Code for the Game as far as i have gotten that is. it deffintly a Good place to learn the base of UnrealScript code.

With this base it and a review of other Scripts for the games it self, you can pretty much cobble togather anything.

No I'm still not do with this book And untill then, This review remains standing.

1 out of 5 stars NOT all in one.......2007-01-23

This is pretty much designed as if you wanted to look at UnrealScript as a base programming language for learning basic programming skills off of. This is definitely not useful at all for practical modding or general game making. It just goes into very basic programming abilities that unreal script. To be honest, I bought this for a class that bases the language in unreal script. I thought this book may be useful since it is ALL IN ONE (yeah right!). I was already adept in basic programming and this book was absolutely useless for practical gaming modification.

1 out of 5 stars No Unreal Here.......2006-12-07

I was very excited to see this book and bought it immediately. I read it and was profoundly disapointed: the whole book consists of setting up an editing environment and running some non-Unreal text programs. I literally could write a better book in a week. I'd give it zero stars if Amazon allowed. If someone writes a half-way decent Uscript book, I'll buy it. In the meantime google "uscript" and you'll learn more than this book teaches you.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for beginners .......2006-08-21

Keep in mind that the title of this book reads UnrealScript, not Unreal Tournament when buying this book. It tells of the basics of programming using UnrealScript.

The authors teach you the basics of scripting language and give you the tools to then go to the UDN for information on the hundreds of classes in the Unreal Tourney class hierarchy.

This is a good book for beginners. I found it helpful in getting me started in DOS, ConText and in understanding the basics of programming.

3 out of 5 stars Issues with samples.......2007-09-19

My biggest problem is that I am unable to execute most of the samples because of the "dimension contains more than one hierarchy, therefore the hierarchy must be explicitly specified" issue - a behavior change in SSAS 2005. Very frustrating. Are there any corrected samples available for download anywhere?

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for mdx.......2007-07-18

I am new to MDX and found this book very useful. It is very readable, provides excellent explanation of technical topics and lots of examples. The book also offers excellent snippets of code for common coding scenarios in MDX.

5 out of 5 stars MDX Solutions: With Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services 2005 and Hyperion Essbase .......2006-11-04

If you are looking for mastering in MDX, this is your book. Highly recommended for begginers and advanced users. Good examples. It's currently helping me to solve real solutions for my customers where there's no easy way to do it only with AS out of the box but with custom MDX for formulas and calculations. Enjoy it!

3 out of 5 stars Reference Book with Little Competition.......2006-09-19

MDX Solutions is an essential reference book for anyone using Analysis Services 2005. No other book covers the subject as thoroughly as this one. However, it remains only a reference book. It is thick, extremely dense, and not a tutorial that you can read cover to cover. Believe me; I've tried, more than once in fact.

It's five authors are experts on MDX and know their stuff, but unfortunately there is no correlation between their raw knowledge and the ability to teach the subject in a step-wise, easy-to-follow manner for someone new to MDX. The text is dense and the examples often difficult to follow. That said, you will need this book if you are planning to do very much MDX programming simply because as of this writing there not better alternatives out there. I wish there were.

A lot of time has obviously been put into this book and I applaud the authors for sharing as much as they have; however, it's very unfortunate that the authors didn't have it edited by multiple reviewers new to MDX who could have turned the book into a better tutorial.

5 out of 5 stars The [MDX] Bible just got better.......2006-04-13

The first edition of MDX Solutions is without a doubt the MDX bible. My copy goes with me wherever I may encounter any MDX-writing requirements. It is by far the most tattered, thumbed-through textbook I own.

From a purely superficial perspective the second edition is about 40% bigger than the original. Just from the size difference alone I am surprised they would consider this a second edition. Did they just keep the title for name recognition? Probably a wise idea. I would almost class this as first edition; a new book.

As the new title suggests the book covers both Microsoft Analysis Services 2005 and Hyperion Essbase's implementation of the MDX specification. Both products and their subtle differences are detailed clearly and wherever possible. There are plenty of product-specific hints, tips & code samples throughout the book. In actual fact you could say that the book actually covers three products if you count AS2000 as a product unto itself. Naturally AS2000 takes a back seat to SSAS but there is still plenty in there.

The tone of the book is balanced so as not to be partial to one product over the other, it simply tells it like it is: Microsoft does it this way, Hyperion does it that way. In a few areas the authors give examples of particular functions/features that may exist in one product but not the other. This is often followed by details of techniques to mimic that behaviour in the other product. A good example of this is Member aliasing (p.158).

Where appropriate complete chapters are dedicated to the specifics of one particular product but mostly are covered together where they share a common MDX foundation. Because of the UDM and attribute-based dimensional model a chapter has been dedicated to going over the new SSAS architecture. Hyperion's User Defined Attributes (UDAs) also has its own chapter.

If you liked the first edition because of its depth of detail and relevant examples you will not be disappointed, this one goes even deeper. I think I could almost feel some of the pain the authors went through as they tried, as succinctly and clearly as possible, to explain some particularly complex concepts within several short paragraphs and a few code samples. Even more so than its predecessor this book *will* make your brain hurt.

To me one of the hallmarks of a good technical book is that it contains information that is simply not available anywhere else i.e. you're getting good value for your money. The book details some MDX features that do not even get a mention in the current (Dec '05) BOL (don't know about Essbase documentation...). Best example is the HAVING clause, the only other place I was able to find any information about this new language feature was on co-author Chris Webb's blog. Ken Henderson's SQL 2000 Guru's Guides were also great examples of "stuff you won't find in BOL or anywhere else".

If I had a criticism of the book it would be (and I am nit-picking here) that on a few occasions sample code is presented containing a concept or syntax shortcut that has not been fully explained to the reader in preceding chapters.

Often appendices get written but never really read and are rarely referenced. Some technical appendices don't really add much value to what you can already find on line or in help files. I often wonder whether some are just put there to, y'know provide a bit of padding to get the publication into the "bloody big technical book" category. To me probably the most valuable part of both versions of MDX Solutions is Appendix A . It is the back of the book that really promotes it to Bible status. Appendix A in this edition now has a 100 page Function and Operator Reference (the original was about 70 pages). MDX function documentation of this quality does not exist anywhere else, not in BOL, not anywhere.

One of the reasons there aren't as many people in the world who use MDX to its fullest is because the underlying concepts take a while to grasp. Many become disillusioned early on and say "I'll just do it in T-SQL, it's easier for me." George et al have tried to provide a little more beginner detail in the first few chapters of this edition, nonetheless the book still goes deep quite quickly. Beginners to MDX could potentially get lost whilst still trying to come to grips with the basic concepts of tuples and sets before being thrown in the multi-dimensional deep end. If you are an OLAP novice or someone who has never written any MDX at all then this is not the book for you to start on. Don't get me wrong, you should still get a copy just don't read it *first*. I would recommend beginning with some lighter MDX reading. "Fast Track to MDX Second Edition" may help ease you into the MDX world without drowning in a sea of square and curly braces. Admittedly, it is based on AS2000 but the essence of MDX itself has not changed between 2000 and 2005, everything is still tuples, sets and axes. "Fast Track" is a smaller book, a lighter read and will serve to get you in the right mind set. So buy both books, read Fast Track first and *then* take MDX Solutions Second Edition off the shelf - you will get much more out of it. If you need more of an overall OLAP base with a bit of MDX mixed in then get a copy of Teo Lachev's "Applied Microsot Analysis Services 2005"

If you own the MDX Solutions first edition and were tossing up whether to get a copy of the latest let me put your mind at ease in that this is, in essence, a new book. Sure you'll see some of the same chapter and section headings and recognise some of the text from the original book but that is pretty-much where it ends. The 300-ish new pages are certainly not padding, the new MDX features and nuances are covered along with even more detail on the ones we already know. If you are committed to making the most of OLAP technology and hence MDX then you will want a copy of this book. Whether you are going to use MDX on the odd occasion or design and build a full-blown OLAP browsing app there is no other equivalent end-to-end MDX publication available. The only other book which comes remotely close is the first edition.

          Book Description

A hands-on tutorial on building and using multidimensional data warehouses
The SQL query language is used to access data in most simple databases. But for multidimensional (or OLAP) data warehouses, Microsoft developed MDX. The MDX query language has become essential know-how for developers and users alike, whether for data warehouses or for budgeting and planning systems. This tutorial/reference guide shows developers and users how to use MDX to access and analyze data for decision support. Both the standard language and Microsoft's own extensive additions to MDX are explained. The authors provide practical examples of MDX in use, and explain both standard usage and more advanced techniques, such as optimization, cube design, and Pareto analysis. Finally, the appendices provide a handy reference guide that users can rely on.

5 out of 5 stars Good Advanced Level MDX Book.......2004-11-04

If you are new to MDX, this book is not going to be an easy read at all. However, it has a very good "MDX Function and Operator Reference" as an Appendix. This reference is indispensable to me when I am writing MDX statements. It is much more usable than the online reference that ships with SQL Server Analysis services.

There is much useful information to be found within its covers if you already have an understanding of MDX. I use this book in conjunction with the "Fast Track to MDX" book. Both books have their strengths and weaknesses and I equally benefited from both.

3 out of 5 stars A great potential for enlightment reduced to pain?.......2004-10-20

Don't be surprised by the bad reviews this book has got here. There is a good reason for that. This is a strong text that deserved a good reviewer or a talented co-author.

Whereas some simple subjects are given a lot of attention, many examples and concepts are simply not explained enough or well.

The appendix is not used as a reference but as a part of the text, which is highly unusual. To understand the text, the reader must often search the appendix for five different definitions or more. The author usually avoids to explain what is in the appendix. What should be a reference becomes an essential part.

Complex concepts are given little explanation. The other existing book on MDX ("Fast Track to MDX") is incomplete, very short and superficial. This one book could fill a major gap. The text is insightful. Yet it does not use its potential at all. It makes a real pain of what could be a true pleasure.

There is simply no good book on MDX in the market. What is very unfortunate is that this book could have been an outstanding piece of work, a reference for understanding and use of MDX, but its main goals are largerly diluted and wasted in the way the book was written. A real shame. A major revison is not only due but deserved and urgent. I hope the author and the publisher do get the point.

5 out of 5 stars hmm... it offers solutions however.......2004-07-07

i don't know why people here complains about lack of solutions. what's about me, i've found many useful tips & solutions inside that book. especially how to use virtual cubes and make them really 'virtual' with morphing underlying dimensions and measures extremely with mdx. more, these methods work well in the real world.
i think it's worth to spend money for that book. definitely it helped me a lot with mdx and cubes' implementation.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart.......2004-04-01

Very poorly written, but advanced book. Author covers wide range of topics, which are a must for anybody serious about learning MDX, but the writing style and explanations are just plain terrible. There are constant references to the topic yet to come in the subsequent chapters. Some sentences take 2-3 passes to understand. Many explanations of functions could really benefit from editor's touch (bold here, cursive there). Try to figure out the meaning of a new function when one sentence contains three words "level" and each one refers to something different. Be sure to read "Fast Track to MDX" to be sure you are ready for this one. Unfortunately this is currently the only advanced MDX book on the market.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely not for beginners.......2004-01-15

I'm just starting to look at MDX and have a minimal background in T-SQL. This is not the book if you're in my shoes. It jumps to advanced topics much too quickly, uses terms that haven't been previously discussed, and doesn't give enough progressive examples. It just doesn't do a good job of building the basics before it starts jumping around and getting advanced.
