The second printing of Coming Home to Myself revives a popular and noteworthy book that does indeed bring women home to a more intimate connection with their feminine selves. Not quite poetry and not quite prose, this collection of quotes offers a series of bite-size excerpts from the writings of Jungian therapist Marion Woodman (Leaving My Father's House, Dancing in the Flames). As Woodman calls it, this is a "surprise child" that was born from the creative mind of artist and psychotherapist Jill Mellick (The Natural Artistry of Dreams), who initially imagined excerpting Woodman's quotes and illustrating them with her watery, Zen-like paintings. Woodman's kernels of wisdom are organized beneath 34 different headings, such as "Unmasking Myself," "Rites of Passage," and "Coming to Love." For example, under the heading of "My Body" a Woodman quote reads as follows: "If the dream says something is wrong with your body, check. I purchased a copy of this book for myself, but have given one to my mother and will purchase another for myself. It is a beautiful distillation of the wisdom of Woodman's works that you want to keep close to your heart, like a friend who gently tells you the things you need to hear at the right time. I deeply appreciate the expansion of Woodman's wisdom provided by Jill Mellick. Wonderful nourishing for a woman's soul!

A Wonderful and Soulful Meditation.......2005-08-04

This is a wonderful book on identity. It's a collection of short, easy-to-read chapters for women about "loving their femininity, themselves and each other" and for men "who are coming to grips with the lost feminine in themselves."

One of the most heartening chapters for me is the one on creativity. I'm a writer, so this chapter really spoke to me. This is some of what they say:

"Some people think of creativity as something that artists possess. It might be more helpful to think of it as Jung did, as an instinct. We can bring creativity to almost every life activity. Moreover, we can use certain imaginative forms of creative expression through the arts to explore personal, spiritual, and psychological development."

Herein, by the way, is a major difference between Jung and Freud. Freud thought the highest evolution of humans was toward rational thought. One this was achieved, we would no longer have a need for art, he thought. (Freud was an athiest.) Jung, however, believed in the mysterious possibilities of life, in a spiritual life, and in the importance of art in expressing not only our pain but also our joy. I find Jung's philosophy to be much more to my liking.

Woodman and Mellick also write:

"Creativity is divine:

the virgin soul opens to spirit

and conceives the divine child.

We cannot live without it.

It is the meaning of life,

this creative fire."

In the chapter on creativity, Woodman and Mellick also touch on the difference between "doing" and "being." They say:

"When doing is all we know,

being is just another word

for ceasing to exist.

When being begins to flow

through dance and paint and song,

joy is no longer luxury

but absolute need."

This is a terrific book. I keep it within easy reach at all times. It gives me comfort, revelation, and inspiration.

Daily food for my soul!.......1998-10-30

I've opened this book from my desk at work, at a stoplight in the car, by candle light in the bathtub, walking in the rain for coffee on a Saturday morning. Each time a passage speaks to me and soothes my soul. I've read passages over several times, sometimes getting a bit of a different meaning as I personalize it. The pages are dogeared, tagged with post-it notes, and many of the passages have been shared with friends and family to engage introspective discussions.

This book makes more accessible many of Marion Woodman's ideas, observations and stories found in her previous books and audiocassettes. Jill Mellick has sensitively gathered Marion's words, organized them by topic, and formatted them in a pleasing visual style, adding her own watercolor illustrations. This is not a book to sit down and read from cover to cover; rather it is best used for dipping into, perhaps at random, perhaps as a starting point for daily meditation. Readers do not need to be familiar with Marion's other books to enjoy these extracts, but may find they wish to look further at her work after this taste.

I haven been following most of Wynonna's carrer. I was VERY Thrilled to find out she wrote her book, on Coming Home To Myself! I bought it and know that it hasn't been a easy road to get where she is. There is many paralls to her life and mine. Many ways the path I chosen to have creative life and help others hsn't been easy--too many barriers but I'm a fighter like these JUDD women!

I like learning the lessons and challenges she has managed to overcome so far in her life. I can relate to her in many ways, because i know what it like to have a disabitity and diffuly realating to her mom sometimes. My mother is differnt than me in many ways and sometimes i forget now and then.

I also can relate to her from my Disabity Hearing promblem and cerbal plasy and i know people who have ADD. I find them intersting. She is one of many ladies I look up to for moviation and insperation throught tough times! I have created a character based on her.

I LOVE her vioce and songs that sings on life-- tough times and uplifing times. I am a Creative Spirit who like to do many creative projects and sometimes I don't know where to begin!!!! I can't wait to read her next book!!!! Kepp up the good work Wynonna You're # 1 in my book!!!!

I listened to this book that is on several CDs. I listened in my car and enjoyed it very much. (We envy so many people before we know what is actually going on in their lives... Wynonna has been through so much. I hope it will be smooth sailing for her from here on out. I sure would never want to trade places with her). I enjoyed this book on CD and I learned a LOT from it as well. However it does get a tad slow in places so be prepared.

We have alot in common when it comes to our mothers and it was an easy read, refreshing story. I've watched Wynonna grow up and always wondering "there's something not quite right there." When you learn about that her life was not all sunshine and roses growing up or after her fame it will make you love her and the voice even more! It made me look at my own relationship with my mother and realize I'm not the only one which felt pretty good.

I think you have to be a fan to finish reading this..........2007-01-02

I was given this book by someone who knows of the struggles I have had in my own life. Both of us thought this would be a great read for me. I know little about the Judds, their music or their lives. I appreciated the insight into how her career got started. I truly enjoyed those first chapters. At the halfway mark I was bored to tears. Shortly after, I could not find any reason to go on reading. I still don't know what she was so pained over. That being said, I hope whatever her struggles are, that they have passed. I saw her perform on TV at the end of 2006 and she and her song were beautiful. Buy the music, not the book.

Exciting new "song"book .......2005-08-19

For several weeks I kept "The Story Behind the Song" on the corner of my desk, turning to it intermittently when I sought information on the background of a particular composition. That's one way to enjoy this book. A better way is to approach it less as a reference volume and more as the concise and fascinating history of 20th-century moods and popular music that it is.

The book is organized by decades. Each chapter includes a two- to three-page overview of that decade along with accounts of 15 of the decade's best known songs. The accounts cover expected topics such as composers' inspirations, key performers and recordings, and current availability of the songs in printed form. But the authors have gone beyond mere reporting in the way they've woven these and other factors into brief, well crafted essay portraits of the various periods.

A good example can be seen in the way the composition "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" speaks for a particular moment in America's past. In telling the story behind this song authors Barnet, Nemerov, and Taylor convey (in just four paragraphs) both the optimistic mood of the county in early 1929, before the October stock market crash, and the personal cynicism of blues artist Bessie Smith. When she recorded "Nobody Knows You..." on May 15, 1929, she was telling the story of her own world weary stardom in a song that became her signature, the authors state, even as it "prophetically declared the end of good times."

The range of songs chosen for inclusion in each chapter is as surprising as the individual song accounts. In the 1940s, for instance, compositions as different as "In the Mood," "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer," and "Some Enchanted Evening" are juxtaposed. The chapter on music of the 80s includes Paul Winter's "River Run" next to the "Miami Vice Theme." Yet in both the 40s and the 80s the overview addresses societal themes broad enough to allow for and even explain such differences. This is true of the other decades as well.

If I were an aspiring popular musician, I would rush to avail myself of the bibliography and the web site and research center listings at the end of this book. For the rest of us, the tune-loving public, it's a treat to encounter clear accounts of how some of the 20th centuries best loved songs came into being.

Divided by eras with chapter titles like: "Gin, Jazz, and Women's Rights," and "War, Watergate, and Disco," this book is fun to read and accurate to a T. I read it all the way through when I first got it, and have used it time and time again to check up on an artist or song. If it was important, the story is here. From: "Take Me Out To The Ballgame," to "Brighten The Corner Where You Are," to "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out," to "Goodnight Irene," to "One O'clock Jump," and on through "Lovesick Blues," "Rocket 88," "American Pie," "Walk This Way," and forward/backward to "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow." If you like music, you need this book.

A Groundbreaking Resource.......2005-02-24

As a teacher and Music Director at St. Anne School, the largest private K-8 school in Orange County, California and a National Distinguished School, I highly recommend this book. I'm using it as a core curriculum item for grades 6th through 8th. The book is extremely well written, researched, and referenced in a way that makes it very easy to teach with a cross curriculum focus. History, culture, and music are easily referenced and intertwined. Most of the songs listed are easy to find on CDs or other sources and I play them in the classroom so the students can bring that part aurally to life. They not only learn about what was pertinent to students their age during earlier times, but what the children were listening to, why those songs were being written, and how that in turn relates to the contemporary music of today.

We are contemplating this book as a textbook for next year. This is a groundbreaking resource! Well done!

Hits both ends of developer spectrum.......2006-10-21

I was kind of expected this book to give lots of detailed information about configuring and using Eclipse. Most of the first seven chapters were useful -- if you were new to using Eclipse as an IDE. However, if you have a few years of Eclipse behind you these chapters are very introduction type.

If you have some time with Eclipse and where looking for a detailed index of all the things that you can set and the best ways to do them then you will be disappointed.

If, like I was, you were buying this and thinking about a companion book on writing plug-ins, you just saved some time. The last two chapters are about extending Eclipse with plug-ins. Both of these chapters take you to the deep end of the pool very quickly but do provide examples. These two chapters show a basic example of a plug-in and a very complex one.

The chapters where they explained SWT (during the general Eclipse information) were very useful. These chapters got my thought process going about how to write different GUI programs and being able to stay away from AWT and SWING.

The chapters on SWT and plug-ins where worth the price. I just wish that there was more expert information about the IDE.

Everything I Expected.......2005-10-27

This book is great. I'm a new eclipse user and relatively new to java and jsp. The short tutorials on tools like JUNIT and ANT were NOT lost on me. This book does a good job in teaching you how to get around in Eclipse 2.x and also good programming practices. You learn the interface while actually developing examples. In stead of a book listing all of the features and how to use them you learn the interface and how to use features in the normal course of programming. I love this book. I bought this shortly before Eclipse 3.0 came out and I was still able to use this book to help me get around in 3.0. Some things were in different places in 3.x, but the functionality was still there. You see online tutorials for the extra features of 3.x. Excellent book I would recommend especially those new to programming.

p.s.
About 40% of the book is related to extending eclipse. I have not read that part of the book and my review has nothing to do with that part of the book.

A great guide to doing practical work with Eclipse.......2005-05-20

This book was a great blend of information and tutortials on how to do things with Eclipse. The examples I downloaded that accompanied Eclipse all worked and I even setup my own CVS repository to connect it to. This book felt like very little work and shows off Eclipse very well ranging from Ant integration to CVS integration to JUnit integration amongst others. Great book.

Practical introduction to Eclipse.......2004-11-20

This is a solid introduction to Eclipse from the user level. It guides you through installing Eclipse, starting your first project, and integrating with source control. There is a small section on writing a plugin, but it's not the emphasis of the book.

O'Reilly's Eclipse books spent about half their time on Eclipse and the other half on plain Java development which was a waste of space. This book spends on chapter on web development, and some of that chapter is spent on use of Eclipse in that context. It's a diversion in both the Manning and O'Reilly books, but the O'Reilly books are far worse.

This is the best introduction to end-user Eclipse that I have read. If you want a book on getting started with Eclipse as a Java development IDE, this is the one.

Eclipse In Action - UPHPU.......2004-11-12

I reviewed Eclipse In Action to familiarize myself with the IDE Eclipse. My main focus while reading the book was to learn all I can about developing with Eclipse. I wanted to be able to utilize all the features that Eclipse has to offer, not only in terms of Java developer, but also as a web developer. However, I want to point out that this book is "A Guide for Java Developers". So the target audience is for a Java Developer.

The book starts out with a great introduction into Eclipse and the how the IDE comes together in the workbench. The moves right into the Java development with Eclipse. It wastes no time getting to the meat of development with Junit, Log4j, testing, debugging, and Ant integration. Not to mention a chapter on CVS integration. The book everything that a developer needs during the development life cycle of their project. The authors do a great job in adding additional information on the features that Eclipse has to offer to help alleviate the remedial tasks during development. Many of these features can be used outside of Java development.

Part 2 of Eclipse In Action deals with extending Eclipse and creating Eclipse plugins (the foundation of Eclipse). These chapters give a great novice introduction into Eclipse plugin development; however, there seems to be lacking detail into SWT/JFace and advanced plugin development.

Overall Eclipse In Action provides an indepth look into the Eclipse IDE. I would recommend this book to anyone that want to use Eclipse as their IDE. I have been using Eclipse for over a year now and I use it for all languages I develop with, like Java and PHP. Though the book focuses on the Java Developer, this also lends it way into development with other languages.
