                        Book Description

In a political and economic climate in which school performance is made public, performance tables and inspectors' reports can only tell a partial story.
It is futile for teachers to complain that they are misrepresented. Self-critical and self-confident schools are information rich. They know how to tell their story for themselves and they welcome the external account as another source of evidence, another view on policy and practice.
This book illustrates how schools can tell their own story. It draws on ground breaking work with the National Union of Teachers to demonstrate a practical approach to identifying what makes a good school and the part that pupils, parents and teachers can play in school improvement. This eagerly awaited European follow-up to Schools Must Speak for Themselves by John MacBeath (Routledge 1999) provides case-studies, step-by-step guidance and brave new teacher-friendly thinking.

                          Book Description

The privatization of British utilities by the conservative governments of the 1980s and 1990s was a major shift in public policy. It was also an experiment in reinventing government, since the newly privatized companies were regulated by high-profile individuals. Frequently criticized and often controversial, the regulators still wield enormous power over a large sector of the British Economy. This book tells the story of their first 15 years of controlling prices, introducing competition, refereeing mergers, and sometimes clashing with the government.

                          Book Description

As an artist, a cat has no home in the world save Paris. (To paraphrase Nietzsche.) Here is the story of Paintbrush, the cat in a bow tie who leaves family, friends, and the Midwest behind to chase a dream of artistic fulfillment. Engagingly illustrated throughout with bright, cheerful watercolors and written in a charming style to match, Paintbrish in Paris is the first book by Jill Butler, a designer and collagist. In it she follows Paintbrush from his first excursions beyond his atelier to the invitation to show his work.

                              Book Description

Every player encounters the king and pawn endgame, the most common finish to a chess match. In The Chess Kid's Book of the King and Pawn Endgame, MacEnulty shows advanced beginner and intermediate players the most important positions and combinations of this tricky ending, including the ideas of key squares and outflanking. Targeting at 8-14-year-olds, this guide will challenge students to become better and more thoughtful chess players.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to a complicated topic.......2007-08-10

An engaging overview of a difficult topic, how to play when there are only Kings and Pawns on the board. Macenulty eloquently covers the basic ideas (square of the pawn, opposition, triangulation (if you don't know what these terms mean, then get the book!)).

This book fills a nice void in a literature filled with material that is just a dump of positions with little explanation. If you have mastered the basics, and want a user-friendly introduction to the complex world of King and Pawn endgames, then this is a great place to start.

A side note on the other reviews. Over half the reviewers here criticize the author because he didn't include topics such as basic mates. If those reviewers had bothered to look, they would see that another book in his 'Kids Chess' series covers basic checkmates extremely well. This is a more advanced book. You might as well complain when a calculus book doesn't cover how to add two numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Timing is everything.......2007-01-29

First of all, this is a somewhat specialized book. Basic checkmates are not discussed; this book is about K & P endings only. I thought the title makes that clear.

Secondly, I think this book is simply WONDERFUL - but not until the time is right, and perhaps not for most kids at all. (Okay, in that sense, maybe the title is misleading.) Not everyone wants to develop a deeper understanding of chess, and that is perfectly all right. One can have all kinds of fun at different hobbies without needing to make work of it.

But if (and until) a time comes when a player can appreciate the frustration of playing K & P endings - and I mean really feel in their minds that somehow some tools are missing from their arsenal, that there must be a better way - only then can they hope to see the utility of this book. Otherwise, it's just a bunch of theory and "solutions" without any motivation or "problem."

As far as the quality of the content is concerned, I would say just compare to all the other stuff available on K & P endings out there. The stuff is either scattered too thinly in the general chess books, or WAY to dry in endgame tomes. This is the most crystal clear, helpful, and digestible exposition of this topic I've seen.

                              1 out of 5 stars Oh I must agree!!!!!!.......2005-04-13

Daa! It has been pointed out that the author forgot to cover how to checkmate with a Queen and King against a lone King when this is a book for the beginner. And, after reading some other books on the endgame I decided why not warn all of those who might buy this book and then be very upset that this book is disorganized and written in a way that it doesn't know what it is talking (writting) about. I my only be 10 (yeas old) but this books gets a 1.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Organized & So Limited.......2005-03-08

Why a book on how to "Queen a Pawn" when not even showing what to do once you get a Queen? Well obviously this book was written in an organized way.
When teaching chess to a beginner you would teach how to checkmate with a Queen before showing how to get one. But this book was written without that basic piece of advice.
There are numeous typos making some of the material impossible to understand not to mention that the author of this book (I looked him up on www.uschess.org the rating list) was not an expert or a master rated player himself but was beind about 30,000 other rated players in the country.
Why Random House would hire a person to write books who cannot play chess at a top or even a significanly above aveage tournament level is beyond me!

                              2 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2004-07-09

This book contains some good ideas for the beginner. My biggest problem is that the book does not seem to allways cover things in the proper order and jumps to too many ideas too quickly. This makes it hard for me to understand some things. This book was in my sixth grade class. I found Pandofini's Engame Book to be much better.

This book details the meta-object protocol, the framework on which the Common Lisp object system (CLOS) is based. The philosophy behind the meta-object protocol is that different applications may require different kinds of object models, and so the object model itself should be subject to program control. The Art of the Meta-Object Protocol provides a wonderful working example of how Lisp can be extended and how it can evolve to incorporate new language constructs. First, the book describes how CLOS is actually implemented by working through a subset. Then it goes on to develop the meta- object protocol in great detail. The Art of the Meta-Object Protocol is useful for the advanced CLOS user as well as for anyone interested in object-oriented programming and language design.

                              5 out of 5 stars A non-lisper's opinion.......2005-10-17

Although I am mostly a C/C++ programmer, I still found this book to be an interesting read. If you, like me, have an interest in programming language design and implementation I highly recommend it. As other reviewers have noted, however, the book has little material for Lisp programmers who just want to use the MOP without looking under the hood. I don't consider this a shortcoming - understanding the design and implementation of your language and tools helps in using them effectively.

4 out of 5 stars Authoritative, but less useful than it could be.......2003-03-27

As a presentation of how to implement the Metaobject Protocol, this is about as authoritative a presentation of CLOS as can exist, short of being a formal (dry!) standards document.

Unfortunately, it falls way short in motivating the USE of the MOP. It shows how it is implemented, and has some examples of how to modify its behaviour. Which is wonderfully useful if your interest is in building your own implementation of MOP. It is not nearly so useful if you're trying to figure out how to apply it to less extraordinary purposes.

To that end, Keene's book on CLOS, which demonstrates quite a number of usage examples, is a vital companion...

4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, but fell short of my expectations.......2002-01-29

This was a disappointing purchase for me, as I read some of the book on-line (in CMU-CL's "Encycmuclopedia") and was rather stunned at the beauty and possibilities of the MOP (which, in short, is defining the core object system itself in terms of the object system, allowing you to use the full power of the object system class hierarchy/relationships to control your object semantics). The book is a pretty straight forward implentation discussion, which is certainly nice as a case study in implementing such an interrelated system and boot-strapping the MOP into use, but it is only that. The MOP is one of those perfect ideas with such vast potential that I would much rather have seen actual expressions of that potential instead of mere inner working details. If I'd know that, I would not have bought it--but then neither will I be selling my copy.

5 out of 5 stars A Must if want to control your Object Inheritence Mechanisms.......1997-11-09

This book is the first so far to completely discuss the mechanisms of the Metaobject Protocol. This is an advanced treatment and will be of value to the experienced Lisp programmer. The book covers all aspects of the MOP in great detail and when the reader has finished it, he or she will be very comfortable with CLOS mechanisms, and even more importantly, why these features have been implemented in the ways that they have.
