Book Description
Too many of today’s teens graduate from high school and head off to college with little thought as to their goal. It is therefore no surprise that only one in three college students will both graduate and find commensurate employment. To improve their odds, students need a plan for success after high school — one that may or may not include college.
This resource discusses the disparity between teens’ preconceived beliefs and aspirations and the new economic and labor markets they will face as adults. It is designed to assist educators, parents, employers, and the community in promoting teens’ postsecondary success by helping them "find their future."

Thinking outside the box.......2003-09-12
Ken Gray has dared to challenge what we all have come to believe to be the "right" path for a student to follow after high school. The truth is that times have changed and the path to success no longer follows the same pattern it once did. I highly recommend this book for anyone who works in close contact with high school students. Many students go to college because they feel it's the only option... then drop out because it isn't for them. Ken Gray's book points to another option for helping these students to succeed.

Book Description
Europe's research and technology system is about to change with the introduction of a novel approach, labeled `European Research Area' (ERA). This concept makes an attempt to break with the established mode of governance in Europe and seeks to advance European research collaboration and coordinate national research policies.
Changing Governance of Research and Technology Policy is a unique collection analyzing and commenting on the development of the ERA. The contributors include leading scholars of European integration and technology policy as well as high-level administrators. They discuss the potential impacts, benefits and limits to research and innovation policy within Europe both in the short and long term. Moreover, the debate about ERA is placed firmly in the context of the overall changes in governance at the European level.
The book will be essential reading for international researchers, policymakers and students interested in research, technology and innovation policy in Europe.

Customer Reviews:
Good briefings on each country.......2004-07-19
A nice discussion of the recent history of industrial relations in the European Union and Switzerland. Each country gets a chapter explaining who its main trade unions are, their membership demographics, and a description of their counterparts in the corporate world. Comparisons are made between countries, regarding their relative levels of unionisation and industrial disputes.
Often, the pressures of a EU-wide common market are also explained. The effects of these on nation-based trade unions, which are still most of them, due to legacies of language and history.
The book is good for getting a quick, accurate briefing on each country and on the entire EU scene.

Book Description
Labor market institutions are a stabilizing force in the face of continuous structural and technological change. They are necessary for shaping the behavior of firms and workers, and are a precondition for the efficient functioning of labor market systems. Drawing on the experience of four small European economies (Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands), this book analyzes four important policy areas in terms of their potential contribution to employment success: macroeconomics, industrial relations, working time, and equal opportunities.

Book Description
Social marginalisation due to changing labour markets in a global, knowledge-intensive economy poses a major challenge to European welfare states. Addressing the problem from a citizenship perspective, this book contributes significantly to the understanding of policy problems and the development of appropriate strategies.
Changing labour markets, welfare policies and citizenship readdresses the question of how full citizenship may be preserved and developed in the face of enduring labour market pressures. It:
clarifies the relationship between changing labour markets, welfare policies and citizenship;
discusses possible ways in which the spill-over effect from labour market marginality to loss of citizenship can be prevented;
specifies this problem in relation to the young, older people, men and women and immigrants;
offers theoretical and conceptual definitions of citizenship as a new, alternative approach to empirical analyses of labour market marginalisation and its consequences;
highlights the lessons to be learned from differing approaches in European countries.
This book provides important new insights for academics and students in comparative social policy, sociology and political science. It will also be of great value to policy makers in the field of social and labour market policy.

Book Description
The one-job wage earner, for so many generations a bulwark of industrialized society, has all but passed away. We perceive this as contemporary reality, yet it has not been easy to cite the facts and figures necessary to build a stable foundation for the social security of tomorrow's population. Now the European Institute of Social Security, a leading multidisciplinary research group dedicated to exploring the frontiers of social security, has taken the crucial first steps with an in-depth examination of the new and atypical work relations that are emerging. The research and conclusions in this book will greatly help policymakers to identify the areas in which existing social security systems can meaningfully accommodate the new realities of work. Changing Work Patterns and Social Security records the proceedings of the 1999 Conference of the EISS, held at Limassol in Cyprus, to consider the relations of atypical work patterns and social protection. Among the important issues raised are: + the real extent of the atypical work phenomenon; + the difficulties relating to the assessment of the incomes of the self-employed; + the social protection of the farmer in Europe; and + the shortcomings of existing social security systems vis-a-vis self-employment and part-time work. The analysis of current trends presented in this book will interest and inform anyone -- whether in government, business or academia -- concerned with the development and future of social protection systems, not only in Europe but throughout the world.

In this prime collection of first-hand interviews, 37 of the world's top record producers share their creative secrets and hit-making techniques - from the practical to the artistic. George Martin reveals the technical and musical challenges of working with The Beatles, while Phil Ramone, producer for such artists as Billy Joel, discusses studio wall treatments. Offering real-world advice on everything from mics to mixing to coaching a nervous singer, producers interviewed include Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin), Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys), Alan Parsons (Pink Floyd) and more.
Customer Reviews:
Great resource for wanna be Producers & Engineers.......2007-03-09
This book is a collection of interviews by some of the best engineers and producers in the business. The content within the interviews reflect the personality of the person being interviewed, which makes for a great balance between those that love techspeak and those that need to understand the soft skills involved in capturing killer performances by artists. Topics covered include the differences between US based engineers and producers vs. their UK counterparts (the latter prefers to print effects to tape directly if things are working.) Another set of questions the interviewer regularly asks are related to project/home studios and the comparisons between the those environments vs high end studios. The responses are candid and enlightening.
If I could sum up best info in the book is that ALL of the interviewees restate the same thing- there are tons of variables but critical to great recording results falls mostly to good mics and the use of dedicated mic pre amps.
Other takeaways:
- Rooms obviously color the flavor of the recording
- Mic placement varies as much as the choices of mics
- Digital vs. analog debate still continues, but good recordings fundamentally result from choosing technologies that you believe are the magic sauce to laying good tracks and understanding their weaknesses to compensate accordingly
- Capturing a great performance is far more important than technically perfect recordings
This is another book that provides more fuel for your gas tank!
Get This Book.......2006-04-11
If you're interested in recording, if you have a project studio or have hopes of producing a music cd, you must get this book. It was more like talking with and getting great advice from over thirty producers, than reading a book. I couldn't put it down.
pure genius.......2006-01-30
I highly recommend that anyone in the music business read this book-- wether or not you are interested in making hits. it's full of really useful information, basically there is no one approach-- everyone has hits on their own terms.
all extremely talented and intelligent people are interviewed.
recommended for home-recordists especially.
Interesting interviews with legendary engineers.......2005-02-08
This is an fine set of interviews with engineers who have worked with the legends of rock and roll. Most of the time is spent discussion mic positioning, filtering, and mixes. There is some coverage of analog versus digital, and some amusing anecdotes about the performers. It's a fun read for those looking to glean a bit more sage wisdom from the pros. There are no diagrams, detailed specifications or settings to impart. This is higher level, about the approach of sound design and how one works with tricky personalities.
Good Hands on-Nuts and Bolts(knobs and Mic's) Kind of stuff.......2005-01-19
The author asks a bunch of recurring questions to nearly all the subject producers. Any musician/composer with some time under his belt struggling to self produce at an objectively professional caliber will recognize the starkly relevant real world challenges underlying those questions. The fact that so many of the questions repeat from one interview to the next only makes the many varied answers all the more interesting. If you're a starry eyed wanna-be mesmerized by the supposed glamour of pop music making, look elsewhere. If you want to know how the grunts in the trenches actually make hit records, don't read this book once; read it repeatedly. I still am. As much to absorb the no bs, no excuses, no slacking, know your stuff, just get it done, mind-set common to these seasons pro's. (no young bucks here)

Book Description
In the 19th century, Europe exported its politics, goods, ideas, customs - and not least, its sports, to the rest of the world. This imperialism began a process of cultural diffusion in which sport became a cultural bond, moral metaphor and political symbol. It was a two-way process, for as soon as the world beyond Europe became known to the Europeans, sports from other parts of the world entered Europe. The sports of Europe and the United States were imitated and assimilated and became symbols of national and cosmopolitan identity. This work examines the national and international importance of sport and its role in shaping post-millennium global culture.
Book Description
Two great collections, 144 puzzles in all, will delight and test the skills of any crossword lover!
What makes these crossword puzzles, from New York City's newest newspaper, the best ever? They're carefully edited to get rid of the junk that shows up in crosswords over and over again. Those obscure words that nobody actually uses (like agio, etui, and esne) are kept to an absolute, bare minimum. Instead, the solving pleasure arises from tricky clues and witty puns. Four-fifths of the puzzles have clever and original themes, too, which add to the fun (look at the title for a hint). Plus, solvers will enjoy the wide range of difficulty, which is indicated by the number of stars on top. Those that come from the Monday paper are simple, but the Friday puzzles, especially the themeless "Weekend Warrior" crosswords, are the toughest in America. They will challenge even the best solvers--and inspire newcomers to the world of crosswords to work their way up! A special treat: the answer to the very last puzzle from the original New York Sun, which shut down on January 4, 1950, is printed in Volume 1. At last, you can check your solution!

Best book to know about ebay online.......2007-03-14
This book was excellent and very informative. At first there was so many to chose from but I am positive I made the right choice. It is not expensive and worth every penny. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in either buying or selling on ebay.
'SOLD AMERICAN!!!".......2006-02-10
Are you a frequent buyer or seller on eBay. If you are, this book is for you. Author Michael Banks, has written an outstanding book that is a nonconformist, irreverent, and realistic handbook for both buyers and sellers.
Banks, begins by presenting an overview of the organization and structure of eBay, along with what it offers and the basics of how it works. Then, he covers the basics of participating in eBay auctions. The author continues by introducing you to the basics of searching on eBay. In addition, he also shows you how to combine basic search techniques with Search commands and unconventional techniques to conduct truly high-powered searches. The author also considers the relationship between value, price, and demand, and looks at some methods for calculating prices. Then, the author takes a look at how you can fit the profile of the ideal seller, and how to handle those less-than-ideal buyers you may consider. Next, he shows you how to decide what you are going to sell.
Next, the author suggests how you might go about finding items to sell on eBay. Then, he explains how to go about creating a successful auction. The author continues by showing you how to write copy on eBay. In addition, he covers how to relist an item and how to improve your chances of selling it. The author also presents an overview of things you should know before you bid and buy on eBay, focusing on dealing with sellers. Then, he answers questions about bidding and tracking auctions, along with information about techniques and tools you can use to win consistently. Next, he presents some approaches to getting those auction items you've lost. Then, the author covers the steps and options involved in paying for and getting your items. The author continues by looking at some common scams and downright illegal activities that take place on eBay. In addition, he looks at several types of products that aren't what they appear to be. Finally, the authors shows you how you might go about getting information about an eBay member, through eBay and other channels.
This excellent book shows you how eBay works; how to find things on eBay; how to bid effectively and win; the best times for buying and selling; how to draw bidders without spending a bunch on eBay auction features; how to spot shills, fraudulent sellers and deadbeat buyers; and, a lot more. In addition, you'll find information about how to handle the offline aspects of online buying and selling, and some useful information about using the Internet in general.
Get this book.......2006-01-06
This book is great whether you are new to eBay or you have been using it for years. I have done some buying and selling on eBay and while I don't consider myself an expert I felt pretty confident in my abilities. There are a great many books out there about mastering eBay, but this one stands out amongst the crowd. This book opened my eyes to a whole lot more that eBay can do, for me, for you. The first chapter is the basics of what eBay is. After that it is a plethora of information. It covers topics from how to search to how to bid and how to post and item for the best results and how to attract bidders. This should be called the eBay bible because it is all you need. It can save you money, time, and effort. This book is packed with information that is easy to read and understand. Space is not wasted on excessive graphics; only the most appropriate and useful graphics are included. It is a fast read especially when you start getting excited about what you will learn and how soon you can use this knowledge. For those who are interested in eBay it is a page-turner. I am recommending this book to any one who uses eBay, from beginners to seasoned eBayers. The author participated in some of the original auctions in 1983 aimed at trading computer parts on college campuses, and now is a regular on eBay. He has written over 40 books on various topics, such as technology, writing and eBay.
Covers just about everything including discerning the 'real prices' of items and learning more effective bidding strategies.......2005-12-06
Michael Banks' The eBay Survival Guide is another fine guide to selling and buying on eBay - and avoiding common pitfalls - which covers just about everything including discerning the 'real prices' of items and learning more effective bidding strategies. From using HTML in listings and handling templates to considering private auctions and handling problem buyers or sellers, all the basics of the interactive auction forum that is eBay are covered.
A practical guide for all aspects of eBay.......2005-12-05
If you've never used eBay before you'd be silly to do so without first picking up 'The eBay Survival Guide' by Michael Banks. Even if you've been using the auction site for years you will also benefit from the information found in this book.
'The eBay Survival Guide' starts out, not surprisingly, with an overview and history of online auctions and of eBay itself. It then moves on to how the site works and also provides some great tips and techniques for finding items you want. Even though I've been using eBay since 1999 I found it interesting to go back to the beginning and get an overall sense of what's really happening on one of the biggest sites on the internet.
The next major section of the book is geared toward those people who are using the site to sell things. That brings up a point worth mentioning. This book is for both sellers and buyers on eBay. It's a 'survival guide' for all users, not just a "how to make lots of money on eBay" book. I'll look at the section for buyers in a minute. The section for sellers includes suggestions for creating better listings, when to relist items, how to deal with problems that may arise and so on. It's loaded with screenshots, so you're not just reading about eBay you're seeing what things will look like when you use the real site. I think a great many sellers would benefit from reading Chapter 10 called, "How To Create Listings That Sell". Banks points out the many pluses that come with writing effective descriptions and titles for your auction items.
Next comes the section for buyers. Again there are lots of screenshots that really help bring the examples to life. And there are more than just a few examples. The book is obviously written from a great deal of personal experience not just clinical research. Banks' anecdote about the historic airplane photograph and negative (page 186) is proof of this. In presenting it he helps illustrate best practices for bidding, outbidding and sniping. Here's an area where I had some experience but again felt that the book either reinforced some of the things I already knew (making me feel more confident in bidding) or suggested things I should be doing but wasn't (like spending more time researching other bidders).
Near the end of the book he discusses how not to get ripped off using eBay and in doing so exposes some of the uglier sides of the site. This is important information though and helps buyers and sellers better understand what can go wrong and how to avoid it.
Throughout the book Banks writes in a clear easy-to-understand style that feels like a friend sitting down to explain eBay to you. Despite the fact that the guide is about an internet website it feels not at all like a computer textbook. Its short concise sections make finding the information easy and learning from it even easier. You should find it easy to pick up the book and skip to whatever section is currently most relevant to your eBay activities. The well-written index also helps you to find the help you need quickly.
Whether you're new to eBay or not and no matter whether you're buying or selling it's a sure bet that "The eBay Survival Guide: How to Make Money and Avoid Losing Your Shirt" will help you get the most out of online auctions. Highly recommended.
