        Book Description

When the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965 were passed, they were seen as triumphs of liberal reform. Yet today affirmative action is foundering in the great waves of immigration from Asia and Latin America, leading to direct competition for jobs, housing, education, and government preference programs. In Collision Course, Hugh Davis Graham explains how two such well-intended laws came into conflict with each other when employers, acting under affirmative action plans, hired millions of new immigrants ushered in by the Immigration Act, while leaving high unemployment among inner-city blacks. He shows how affirmative action for immigrants stirred wide resentment and drew new attention to policy contradictions. Graham sees a troubled future for both programs. As the economy weakens and antiterrorist border controls tighten, the competition for jobs will intensify pressure on affirmative action and invite new restrictions on immigration. Graham's insightful interpretation of the unintended consequences of these policies is original and controversial.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding history, frightening future.......2003-07-08

Graham was a distinguished historian and political scientist at Vanderbilt and UC Santa Barbara. Sadly, he died just as it was time to go do a book tour in promotion of Collision Course, so the book got little publicity. As an expert on Congress and the workings of the federal bureaucracy, he is able to recreate just how we managed to stumble unintentionally into the current, highly contradictory, immigration and affirmative action systems. At a time when the nation was finally intending to help African-Americans, why did it suddenly import tens of millions of low wage workers to drive blacks from many workplaces? And if affirmative action was intended as compensation for slavery and Jim Crow, why was it extended to new immigrants, even illegal ones? And what does this portend for the future, when the "racial ratio" of beneficiaries from quotas compared to those who must shoulder the burden mounts ever higher?

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Price.......2007-01-18

I've been around stomp boxes for a few years now (I worked at 4 Guitar Centers and was consistently the 'go-to' guy in the guitar accessories/effects department) and have had a chance to hear good natural sounding botique type pedals and really compressed not so great pedals. For me, this motivated me to get into building stompboxes.

The book is really easy to follow. Topics covered include:
              * Tools to have in your electronics lab
              * Straight forward schematics and projects
              * Concepts of electronics
              * Component overviews

Be warned: This book is not intended to teach the mathematics and calculations down to a component level. It touches on basic ideas but in order to understand this book's contents, it might be beneficial to have some prior exposure to electronics to really understand it (ie: schematically literate, able to assemble circuits, etc...).

Overall, an amazing value! After reading online reviews, I understand why this book is a standard in hobbyist's and professional's workbenches :)

4 out of 5 stars IMHO This is Still the Bible for Electronic Guitar Effects.......2005-01-23

This book was first published in 1975, I believe. I purchased it in the 1980s. At the time, it was the only authoritative book on the subject of building your own effects. Finding schematics and parts was, to say the least, difficult. Rackmount processors were just beginning to dominate the marketplace. Craig Anderton emphasized low noise in designing the circuits and the projects represented the state of the art, but they might be somewhat noisy by today's standards (they are still fairly quiet, though).

In this modern age, schematics, parts, and tips on building your own projects are just a mouse click away. For the amount of money it would cost to build the projects in this book, one could buy a multieffects box that is, arguably, more versatile with better fidelity.

However, EPFM is far from obsolete, especially in an era where analog effects are (thankfully) becoming all the rage again. The book might benefit from a revision that addresses the increased resources available via the internet and, if feasible, circuit design modifications which reflect any technological advancement in noise reduction.

Nonetheless, EPFM is still the standard for entering into the field of audio electronics. That is no accident. Some reviewers lament the book is not very in-depth and does little more than teach you to solder. Craig Anderton makes no secret of the fact that his objective is to whet your appetite and give you the opportunity to create some usable effects as effortlessly as possible.

He succeeds. The accompanying CD reveals that these are all wonderful sounding effects. The ring modulator is my personal favorite and the phaser sounds as good as any on the market. Be aware you will need to study further if you want to delve deeply into the field of audio electronics. This book has an entire chapter devoted to pointing you in the proper direction.

In the forward to EPFM, guitarist Joe Walsh writes "I couldn't think of a better place to begin than right where you are." Thirty years later, this statement holds true.

3 out of 5 stars The projects work, but you won't learn a lot.......2004-06-15

Most of the projects in the book will work fine, but you are not going to learn very much from building them besides how to solder. I had worked as an electronics assembler before upgrading to technician and I can solder, all modesty aside, much better than "the guys" (the mostly male technician pool) but working with audio design is a little new to me.

Vacuum tubes, which is where most of the interest from guitar players is today, aren't covered in this book, but neither are discrete transistors with their biasing and multi-pole filters. To be honest, I get the idea that Mr.Anderton regards the reader as having the technical ability of twelve-year-olds.

The projects do work though, so if you just want a constructon exercise or to save money (if you already have a electronics bench of gear-you need a scope, bench supply and generator to do this, regardless of what he says) I can't criticize.

5 out of 5 stars Still relevant after all these years..........2004-02-21

I was in a bunch of bands growing up in the late 80's. I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do with my life but was dabbling in electronics. Then I found this book at the library...

To make a long story short I don't play music much anymore but am an electrical engineer.

I still own a copy of this book and would never think of getting rid of it. Though we are in an age of digital signal processing, this book still stands the test of time. It is literally a timeless classic in applied electronics!!!!

Okay, now I figured out how to get my name in here properly. See previous review, which I wrote, with apologies to Bob Moses for typing his name in the wrong box when I was entering the original.

Jeeze, this stuff is tricky isn't it?

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!.......2004-01-17

Another reviewer was complaining that you can't get the designs for this book, therefore it is useless, but if you do a Google search you'll find that one of the authors (Bob Moses) has a personal website with all of the schematics, source code, metal drawings - everything - for the projects in this book. I've built several of them, and they are totally awesome and work like a charm. Also, I think you can still buy kits on line at http://electrovoce.com/.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Book if you expect to build anything........2003-02-04

This Book is virtually Worthless. All projects in this book lack critical information to actually build the projects such as PCB Layout, Part Lists and Source Code for the ROM's or the software/hardware to program them.

While the book provides the name of a company nameed "PAVO" where you can supposably buy a kit. This company was/is at least partially owned by one of the authors (Bob Moses). It appears this company is out of business. The phone number is not in service and a google search reveals that his Website(Which has not been updated since 2/2000) that his email address is thru the company's Website (which is also not in service).

I'm an Electrical Engineer and although I beleive I could re-create the missing info it would be almost be easier to start from scratch.

I am extremely disappointed with this. I first got in got interested in electronics from Craig Anderton's book Electronic Projects For Musicians (which was out of print but you can still find some copys)that was a great book. I would highly recommend Craig's books but I would I no longer do so sight unseen.

1 out of 5 stars you won't be able to build the projects from the book info.......2001-05-04

the authors do a great job of making these projects seem buildable but then leave out information critical to actually building the projects. a diagram of the printed circuit board layout is not included. this means that to build the projects you must purchase their kits, which is NOT made explicit anywhere in the book. very dissappointing.

              3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2001-02-02

This book is NOT a book about developing digital effects for guitar, as one previous reviewer would have you believe.

The book concerns itself with the construction of a MIDI computer based upon a particular microprocessor chip. There are what appear to be several excellent introductory chapters on construction techniques, necessary tools, electronic components, etc. Several chapters lead you through the development of the MIDI controller. The remainder of the book describe various software projects to expand the functionality of the system.

In truth, it appears to be a well-written book, but I returned it because I was hoping to learn how to build digital signal processing effects, not MIDI controllers. If you are looking for a digital age update of the Anderton's out-of-print "Electronic Projects for Musicians", like I was, then keep looking....

                    Book Description

At the turn of the 20th Century, Japanese 'villages' and their exotic occupants delighted and mystified visitors to the Great Exhibitions and Worlds' Fairs . At the beginning of the 21st Century, Japanese tourists have reversed the gaze and now may visit a range of European 'countries', as well as several other cultural worlds, without ever leaving the shores of Japan. This book suggests that these and other exciting Asian theme parks pose a challenge to Western notions of leisure, education, and entertainment.

Is this a case of reverse orientalism? Or is it simply a commercial follow-up on the success of Tokyo Disneyland? Is it an appropriation by one rich nation of a whole world of cultural delights from the countries that have influenced its twentieth-century success? Can the parks be seen as political statements about the heritage on which Japan now draws so freely? Or are they new forms of ethnographic museum?

Examining Japanese parks in the context of a variety of historical examples of cultural display in Europe, the U.S. and Australia, as well as other Asian examples, the author calls into question the too easy adoption of postmodern theory as an ethnocentrically Western phenomenon and clearly shows that Japan has given theme parks an entirely new mode of interpretation.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best RPG books I've ever bought.......2004-03-18

This is one of the best RPG books I've ever bought. GURPS Uplift is full of more information than a lot of core rule books. It is an excellent setting book and comes with the best optional rule set I have seen in two decades of gaming. The optional rule I'm referring to is a detailed alien creation system that takes up the entirety of chapter 4. Even if you don't play GURPS Uplift, the system is massively useful. Even if you don't play GURPS, the system is massively useful. It is easily translatable into any game system and it alone is worth more than the price of GURPS Uplift. It will quickly generate random (or non random) entirely believable aliens that will both seem different from humans but still have plausible reasons for interactions with them. For the rest of the chapters you do need the GURPS basic set. You should also probably have GURPS Compendium I and GURPS Space, though you can get away with not having them. I would also highly reccomend Contacting Aliens as an additonal resource to play, though you don't need it as a simplified version of that information is available in Uplift. The setting is completely true to the Uplift books and contains a lot of information to play in multiple time periods and places within David Brin's universe. The information is equally useful for alternative settings. If you play space based rpg's this book is worth every penny. Even if you play fantasy games, this can give you some good ideas for truly different species and cultures. Five stars does not do it justice, this is as good as it gets.
