Book Description
The rural labor movement played a surprisingly active role in Brazil’s transition to democracy in the 1980s. While in most Latin American countries rural labor was conspicuously marginal, in Brazil, an expanded, secularized, and centralized movement organized strikes, staged demonstrations for land reform, demanded political liberalization, and criticized the government’s environmental policies.
In this ground-breaking book, Anthony W. Pereira explains this transition as the result of two intertwined processes - the modernization of agricultural production and the expansion of the welfare state into the countryside - and explores the political consequences of these processes, occurring not only in Latin America but in much of the Third World.

Good enough to purchase twice!.......2006-05-04
I came across this book in a used bookstore on a college campus. I purchased it without more than a few quick page flips to see the type of content. It didn't really matter, though as Twain is my favorite author. The "student" who owned this book previously underlined several passages extensively, and sloppily at that. If they had spent time reading Twain instead of trying to underline every phrase, it might have made a difference. On the other hand, perhaps they were blind, and wanted to underling the important phrases. It makes half of the book virtually illegible. So I purchased it new from amazon.com, along with the first volume, which I am sure will be as delightful.
This is a wonderful book (reading the legible half), and is now one of my favorites. Twain's essays and humorous bits are hilarious, and provide an excellent view into his opinions and life. His piece on cigars is hilarious, and the Adam's Diary selection is a must read.
What a Character!.......2005-06-19
I've haven't even read one of Twain's novels, which no doubt makes me a heathen in the literary world, but I really enjoyed this collection of essays. Gosh, I would have loved to meet this guy. He seems as obnoxious as a professional wrestler, but has an uncanny talent for being right.
My favorite essay is, "A Cure For the Blues," where Twain endlessly rags on a popular author of the time. The guy may still be popular, I don't know, but Twain had plenty of reason to rag on him, and I really do consider Twain's critique to be a cure for the blues. It's hilarious.
Mark Twain means "Deep Enough".......2001-07-18
This book is a joy to read. Though not all the short works contained within are "classics", you will find satire, history, editorials, mischief, slices-of-life, without knowing by the title of any given work what you'll really be getting in the pages that follow (all part of Twain's desire to "stir the pot" and "zing" his readers)... As you will see from this book, Twain is not just a writer of the Mississippi River, but of Washington D.C., the Western U.S., Saloons, Trains, Parades, and much more. You won't be sorry with this high quality book.
Mark Twain at his best.......2000-07-15
Mark Twain is well known for his Mississippi Novels and Historical Romances but it's on his Tales and Sketches where you can find the commical genious in him. It's in my opinion that it's an age span wich makes you like the most Tom Sawyer (8-12), The Prince and the Pauper (13-16) or The Diary of Adam and Eve (18-) and yet, in his complete tales you may find contents of interest for all kinds of readers. And you will never find a better edition than the one that Library of America has to offer. Hardcover, cloth wrapping and alk. paper makes the reading an extra pleasure over the one Mark Teain already gives you. Love Twain and love the edition.

Book Description
This delightful collection of lesser-known gems by Mark Twain begins with the story of a town called Hadleyburg, which prides itself on the honesty of its citizens. One day a citizen of Hadleyburg offends a stranger passing through, who vows to take his revenge by revealing just how corruptible the sanctimonious town really is. Twain is at his best here, poking fun at common hypocrisy as the self-satisfied pillars of the community are done in by their own greed.
Other stories in the collection include: "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," "The Million Pound Bank Note," "Edward Mills and George Benton: A Tale," "The Stolen White Elephant," "Cannibalism in the Cars," "The Man Who Put Up at Gadsby's," "The Story of the Good Little Boy," "The Story of the Bad Little Boy," "Baker's Blue Jay Yarn: What Stumped the Blue Jays," and "Double Barreled Detective Story."
Book Description
Stanley Booth, a member of the Rolling Stones’ inner circle, met the band just a few months before Brian Jones drowned in a swimming pool in 1968. He lived with them throughout their 1969 American tour, staying up all night together listening to blues, talking about music, ingesting drugs, and consorting with groupies. His thrilling account culminates with their final concert at Altamont Speedway—a nightmare of beating, stabbing, and killing that would signal the end of a generation’s dreams of peace and freedom. But while this book renders in fine detail the entire history of the Stones, paying special attention to the tragedy of Brian Jones, it is about much more than a writer and a rock band. It has been called—by Harold Brodkey and Robert Stone, among others—the best book ever written about the sixties. In Booth’s new afterword, he finally explains why it took him 15 years to write the book, relating an astonishing story of drugs, jails, and disasters.
Customer Reviews:
DOWN, ALMOST OUT, BUT NEVER COMPLETELY OUT.......2007-09-23
There is no stronger, clear-minded, and focused writer of American Music Culture than Stanley Booth. He never writes from a distance. In fact, sometimes he writes from too close, within firing range, as with The True Adventures of The Rolling Stones, also published under the title of Down & Out With The Rolling Stones. Booth says it took him years to recover from the experience. I say he hasn't recovered yet. When you are from Georgia and live in Memphis, you learn to survive, but you don't recover. The True Adventures of The Rolling Stones is a historic, deep panorama of a different violent time in America. In order to create, you have to go through the fire. Stanley Booth has done just that.
And when you finish with The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones, pick up a copy of Rythm Oil, I think his best book, and then Keith.
There is no one writing about music with the grit and guts of Stanley Booth. All others, with the exception of damn few, are just playing.
CLOSEST TO THE TRUTH.......2007-06-08
STANLEY BOOTH HUNG OUT AND PARTIED WITH THE STONES. HE BECAME FRIENDS WITH AND WAS A KINDRED SPIRIT TO KEITH RICHARD. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT ACCOUNT OF THE MONUMENTAL 1969 STONES TOUR. HE ALSO SEEMED TO HAVE GOOD INSIGHT INTO BRIAN JONES AND THE STONES DYNAMICS WHILE HE WAS IN THE BAND.
HIS EYE MAGAZINE ACCOUNT OF BRIANS 1968 DRUG BUST WAS A MUST READ CLASSIC.
A Book About Writing A Book About the Stones.......2007-03-13
It is not often that any writer/biographer is given such unlimited access to his or her subject as Stanley Booth was given in 1969 to the Rolling Stones. As an invited insider with the world's greatest rock and roll band at their musical apex, Booth ate, drank, took drugs, and traveled with the band and its entourage. What great interviews he could have done! What amazing revelations about the Stones and their often oppositional creative processes he could have shared with Stones fans!
Granted, most people who have reviewed this book have really liked it. Maybe I missed the point, but I did not come out of this book feeling like I knew the Stones any better, and certainly did not learn any more about the dynamics of their musical collaborations and clashing personal and creative styles. What I got was a good look at a writer hired to write a book about the Stones who ended up writing a book about himself writing a book about the Stones, and five hundred pages of insider gossip, most of which doesn't even border on historically significant or interesting.
C'est la vie.
gimme shelter .......2006-11-19
This book is pretty much on the same level as something you would find in People Magazine, but loaded with literary pretensions. That said, it was good read. He does manage to show the hypocrisy of the Stones who deplore authority and the police. Then they find themselves at the Altamont concert with a brawling, disorderly mob and little to no security. His background research is pretty good, but he is mostly interested in Brian Jones and we don't get as much about the other Stones.
please to meet you .......2006-07-19
Stanley Booth got dipped into the Rolling Stones madness like a scoop of virgin vanilla ice cream sunk down into a bubbling, acid-laced chocolate sauce. The book, to me, took awhile to unfurl, slowly gathering momentum with its often hard-to-follow cataloging of who was in the room, who was banging who, who flew the plane, etc. But Booth, addled as he may have been, knew what he was doing and while he's not a great writer, he clearly got "it." And it leads us down the rabbit hole of 60's excess -- drugs, delusion, oppression and violence. Anyone who has seen the brilliant documentary "Festival Express" knows a lot of the hippies back then were selfish jerks, who thought musicians were capitalist pigs who owed everyone in the world a free concert. The free concert was the idiotic principle that guided so many misguided lives, but if you wanted to buy into the the get-together-try-and-love-one-another vibe of the time, you better be hip, man, or whatever. The Stones were guided by the desire to get kids dancing, resisting mind-numbing authority, and breaking out and shaking it, but the deeper they plunge into the drug and touring vortex, the less they see the devil in the underbelly until it is upon them. Booth steers your surely toward the chaos of Altamont but doubles the impact by weaving in the sad demise of Brian Jones. His reportage is strange and excellent as death reveals itself and the final chapters are riveting. The Stones don't get truly known here, which brings it down one notch for me, but their adventures are, and they, along with the tale of the 60's wreckage through these eyes are worth the read whether you are a Stones fan or not, and if you are not, you might be compelled to take a second look at some of the most mesmerizing rock music ever recorded and try to place it in its proper context. This was a time when the voodoo wasn't just taking place in a lounge . . .

Customer Reviews:
old-time radio.......2004-02-20
i was surprised that Leonard Maltin was so "nice" in this book. i'm used to him complaining about some obscure fact or something the typical fan wouldn't notice or care to notice. a critic's best friend is theirself. only they and they alone hold the answers as to why they like or hate something. they aren't gods...a critic shouldn't make a person like or hate something. it's just an opinion of a movie or CD, it's up to the consumer to agree or disagree with the critic. that being said, i agree with what's said in this book. for once, Leonard lets OTHER people tell the story...he doesn't appear as a "critic" to me in this book and that's good. the book is divided into segments like "announcers"; "sound effects"; "sponsors"; "radio acting"; etc. Maltin relies on plenty of anecdotes, which elevates this above his run of the mill "critic" books and by doing this it makes the book focus on it's subject matter and not the author's reputation as a tough critic.
sappy and full of holes.......2000-01-05
An entertaining, albeit fatuous, peon to American radio. The research is superficial and many of the facts wrong or incomplete.
Great intro to old time radio.......1999-10-26
If you're an old time radio fan, you'll love this book. Not a 'hard hitter' (McCarthyism destroyed quite a few radio careers, for example, this isn't even mentioned) but an affection tribute.
Great!.......1999-08-12
I thoroughly enjoyed this book about old time radio, lots of stories from the old days. The other reviews on this page echo my views (or mine theirs), so I will just say I recommend Maltin's book highly!
Another Maltin triumph.......1998-03-23
When Leonard Maltin writes on a subject, it betrays his love for that subject, and it is well researched. There have been a number of books on the history of radio, but this one is derived from interviews that Maltin did himself, sometimes before it was too late. My only problem with this book is the lack of a bibliography; since Maltin does draw from books written during radio's heyday, it would have been nice to have information on them. Regardless, if you have any interest in radio, this is a book you will thoroughly enjoy.
