This book studies the efforts of women development agents in micro-finance programmes to promote the interests of their poor rural women clients. It exposes the differences in the ways men and women staff of these programmes interact with these poor women, and argues that gender biases in the structures, cultures and incentive systems of development organisations constrain women staff from promoting women's rights more aggressively.

The author shows that women field workers are an important resource for the empowerment of poor women, since they often display a greater degree of responsiveness and sensitivity to women's social and economic constraints. It allows them to engage with their clients on matters like domestic violence, reproductive health, children's well-being, and property rights. Through this analysis the author develops a conceptual framework for understanding the gendered nature of organisations, demonstrating how male-dominated organisational hierarchies constrain women's management capabilities. She also illustrates the gendered process of policy implementation, exposing the inability of women staff to act upon their interpretations of women's needs. And finally, the author builds theory on institutional capacity building in development from a gendered perspective, which is about establishing accountability to women in state and non-governmental development institutions.

After reading half a dozen of this type of book, THIS is the one I bought! Covers nearly every aspect of the music industry including publishing, legal and management, merchandising, touring, record contracts, film licensing, the internet/ new media, etc. It even has a section on classical music. The only thing I don't like is the author's liberal (pun intended) use of leftist quips. Not appropriate. What sets it apart from others of its type though is the author gives clear and specific advice on nearly every issue, `Check for this,' `Avoid that,' etc. Very helpful to anyone who is seeking to enter the industry in any aspect. Buy this one!

I've read over two-dozen books on the music business- this is the best. If you only get a few bks on the biz, get this.

Something "Search Inside" doesn't tell you: Passman allows you to read this book choose-you-own-adventure style by telling you what you can skip if you are on the "Fast Track" or what you should not skip if you are on the "Intermediate Track."

This book was a good read for those who really want to know the ins and outs of the industry. I am an indie artist myself so I would like to think I don't have it so harshly. Other than that, it was very informative.

How the Traditional Music Business Works.......2007-03-08

This is a great book if your looking to be socialized into the way the industry works (or doesn't as the case may be). If you read it from the perspective of; how the labels are ripping off fans, their employees (bands), and generally mismanaging themselves, then you can get a good understanding of where the opportunities are.

I'm not suggesting that this isn't a worthwhile read as some aspects still apply and it'll serve as a great history book of the way things used to be. That said, the need to actually cover how much is an acceptable level to be ripped off is obviously ridiculous and speaks volumes about the state of the industry. I have yet to find any other industry that generally accepts that there are acceptable levels of getting ripped off. I also find it offensive that the author (well established entertainment lawyer) suggests that there's really nothing wrong with lawyers representing both labels and artists. His message there can be boiled down to "it's a small field and the way things are...so get over it."

These are some of the fundamental reasons why the music establishment is going the way of ancient Greece. Industry execs have lost the passion of the music over the greed of their financial requirements, and the lawyers being paid by artists are misrepresenting them even though they have a fiduciary responsibility to protect them.

A representative collection of avant-garde American painting from the 1930s and ’40s, owned by Auburn University.

Conceived and funded by the State Department in 1946 as part of a new emphasis in international diplomacy, the exhibit of paintings called Advancing American Art was launched on what was enthusiastically projected as an extended goodwill tour of Europe and Latin America. But almost immediately the exhibit was attacked by conservative groups as “un-American” and “subversive” and its abstract paintings ridiculed in the national media, in Congress, and by no less a critic than President Truman. Following their recall by Secretary Marshall in 1947, the exhibit’s paintings were quietly declared surplus property and sold under rather curious circumstances by the War Assets Administration. Most of the collection was acquired by a small number of public universities in what could be called the art bargain of the century, since works by such figures as Marin, O’Keefe, Shahn, Dove, Kuniyoshi, and Hartley were sold for $100 or less.

The chronicle of this exhibit tells us something about America after the war, when the nation sought to reconcile its sacrificial experiences from the Depression and in World War II with its new role on the international scene. Defining the figures of confrontation that challenged America’s tenuous self-conceptions at the time, this book captures a significant transitional moment in U.S. history while also serving as a catalog of the 38 masterpieces purchased by Auburn University.

Taylor D. Littleton is W. Kelly Mosley Professor of Science at Auburn University. Maltby Sykes was Emeritus Professor of Art at Auburn University. Leon F. Litwack is a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian at the University of California, Berkeley.

Clearly the best book until now in this new series.......2006-11-18

After a 15-year-break from chess, IM Rizzitano has finally returned to tournament play. Within a short period of time he has now written even more books than other authors do during their whole lifes through, but thishas not taken bad influence on the quality of the books. On the contrary: in my eyes, his books become better and better.

His current book on the Taimanov-sicilian has to compete with some strong
prodecessors such as Taimanov's own book, a nice book by Graham Burgess
and a recent book by grandmaster Alexander Delchev who is a known expert
on the Taimanov. I think Rizzitano has no reason at all to hide behind those famous names. As Rizzitano's game against Shabalov shows, he has had
some very interesting novelties prepared before returning to tournament play.

I am delightened to see his great explanations, showing the connection between opening and middlegame in an almost perfect manner. He uses 25
modelgames to show the currently very popular lines as the english attack
as well as Taimanov's original handling with ...Nge7 and lesser known
sidelines.

As far as I am concerned, this clearly is the best book of this new series
and I am looking forward for further books written by Rizzitano. Just great!

The Taimanov Sicilian is currently the fastest-growing Sicilian Defense Variation among strong players - if you play this opening as Black or need to know how to meet it as White, this book is an essential part of your opening preparation. A fantastic book!

you can probably read this book and not be any better at playing the taimanov than before...

A Flop.......2001-06-01

Compared to other Sicilians, the Taimanov is relatively slow-developing, giving White few immediate targets. At the same time, it is a flexible system, and depending on the move order can readily transpose to the Scheveningen or Sveshnikov Sicilians. I had hoped for some detailed discussions of the concepts behind the opening, as well as explanation of move orders and transpositions. On both fronts I was disappointed. This book is skimpy in verbal explanations, and even the annotations and analysis are pretty bare-bones. There isn't a master index of variations. A major disappointment overall. If you're interested in the Taimanov, a better bet would be Graham Burgess' recent book. It's not that great on verbal explanations either, but gets top marks on the technical side.

The Sicilian Taimanov.......2000-05-31

I must say that I was quite disappointed after buying the book. The book was written by GM Plaskett of England. He covers most of the important variations of the Taimanov with some games from top level grandmaster play in the 90s. There are 10 chapters followed by a summary of variations. There is a decent amount of verbal commentary in each of the games however one of my pet peeves was the dearth of analysis of any of the games. I think this is a good book if you are at least expert strength and are a regular Taimanov player. However, i think this book must be supplemented by another opening text. I am not sure if there is that much more material here that is useful than can already be found in MCO or NCO.

Could be a lot better. .......2007-06-04

This book really leads you step by step -- without explaining much, to the point that you don't know why you're doing things or how to use the applications when trying to create your own webpage (you're fine as long as you're doing the exercises in the book). If you're an absolute beginner, choose something else.
