        Book Description

Written by a professional automotive sales and finance manager, Auto Buying vs Leasing is intended to help you save time and money by providing you with the knowledge and tools needed to negotiate the best deal. What to look for in new and pre-owned vehicles, how to prepare a currently owned vehicle for trade-in, the importance of dealing on price, plus step-by-step examples to take the mystery out of calculating lease or finance payments is just the beginning. By exploring this industry in depth, this book familiarizes you with industry terminology as it guides them through the ins and outs of cash payment, credit, and financing; after-market products, plus post-sale vehicle care and maintenance warranties. Final chapters caution readers about the potentially dark side of the auto business while offering useful advice to ensure a successful, dread-free car-buying experience.

The book was very informative. I put it to practical use and saved myself $700 on my last leased vehicle. I have given the book to friends to use and they are thrilled with the results. It was very easy to read and understand.

          Book Description

This book is the first major study of labor relations in New Order Indonesia for nearly thirty years. The author provides theoretical analysis on the role and prospects of organized labor in late industrializing countries. With the use of comparative models, Hadiz argues that labor movements face greater obstacles to their effectiveness the later it is that a country undergoes industrialization. Strict labor controls in Indonesia are shown to be the legacy of struggles between the army and the Left before the New Order, and the corporatist social and political framework is shown to continue to constrain the development of labor movements.

          Book Description

Balls of lightning moving through your window? Waves on the beach as tall as a two-story building? Volcanoes in your backyard? Getting a sunburn in only seven minutes? Is anything safe anymore?

A PARANOID'S ULTIMATE SURVIVAL GUIDE is just what you need to help you decide. This entertaining book discusses the hidden (and sometimes not-so-hidden) dangers of our world--from what's lurking at your next picnic or on a kitchen sponge to the dangers of asteroids whizzing close to Earth.

The authors do more than just list the possible dangers we all face both inside and outside our homes. They also help you judge the severity of these lurking threats and suggest remedies and solutions.

If you're feeling anxious, this book will show why you have good reason to, and it will teach you how to cope with the very real threats in your world.

5 out of 5 stars This book left me scratching my head .. . . .......2007-01-27

. . . and wondering how Reviewer mcHAIKU survived all the trauma of Wars & Pestilence and lived to be 80 without becoming paranoid. (?) My blithe attitude may have to make an about face with one granddaughter studying in the San Andreas Fault area, another beginning studies in the vicinity of the New Madrid Fault, plus a family living in Indiana's Tormado Alley.

This book may be referred to with unhappy frequency. For 'head-scratching' there is plenty to be learned on pages 208-214, some of it rather revolting. The authors are practiced information-gatherers & they also offer lots of remedies. That's to balance the scary parts. It helps to have a good index & plenty of references in the EndNotes, to which you can add by stuffing your copy with newspaper & magazine clippings.

This reader is careful now to heat water for ONLY two minutes in the microwave, and my eye will scan more carefully the labels of toilet cleaners. The fire-builder in the family will be quizzed about chances that our wood-burning stove is a potential threat for carbon monoxide poisoning. I do applaud the authors for their challenge to adults on page 252, to "TURN OFF THE TV & GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY!"

The book is formatted to encourage you to THOROUGHLY read all sections. In a race for time to get this re-mailed to the studious one in Santa Cruz, I admit to some skimming. I'll doubtless give up and order another copy. Who of us doesn't have a hang-up or two, anyway?

5 out of 5 stars Blending humor with authentic hazards.......2002-12-05

Blending humor with authentic hazards, this tells how to cope with feelings of terror over everything from dust mites and meteorites to solar flares and poisoning. These are everyday hazards for the most part: the authors assess the severity of these threats and offer suggestions for overcoming them.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A good introduction, prepare to skip ahead..........2006-04-20

Ableton Live is the most intuitive sequencer available to today. About half of the book covers information that I feel is obvious, or explained very clearly in the operations manual provided by the vendor. The other half is useful information that leaves you wanting more. This is the information on how to use the effects, proper technique with envelopes and quite a few tutorials on leveraging Live's time warping feature on audio clips.... This information is worth the price of the book, even if you aren't a fan of the Power! series (untill we get another book on Live anyway, as of this writing this is the only one available).

I wish there was more information on production technique with the effects (really outside the scope of this book I guess) I think a chapter devoted to Impulse would have been nice. Impulse is the underrated rhythm sampler that comes bundled with live, it's a very powerful virtual instrument that has completely replaced my use of external ryhthm programming devices. The vendors operations manual doesn't cover Impulse very well and neither does this book...

4 out of 5 stars Amazing, but way too long!.......2006-03-17

The whole series of "Power!" is fantastic, but if you are not a person with lots of patience and basic music theory, technically and theoretically, this book will keep the whole Ableton thing above your head. Otherwise, this is all you will need to master Ableton...

          4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-02-18

I downloaded Live 5 using it as a demo now and also purchased Chads book: Ableton Live 5 Power so I can began to discover this much talked about program!

I have found Chads writing easy, fun and very informative. This book is worth the price alone simply for Chads excellent writing explaining analog and digital sound. Using multiple visuals the reader is able to grasp the ideas presented more fully and faster.

The book does not get into the "nitty gritty" details that a true Power User may demand but the books does give enough information for someone such as myself (a beginner) to feel like they know the program. I guess thats where the Power part stems from.

If you are looking to learn Live or more about it, buy this book. If you want lots of tricks, I do not believe this is what you want.

          3 out of 5 stars Ableton LIVE 5 Power ? haha .......2006-02-08

First of all it's a good book, especially if you are beginner with LIVE 5.
But if you are expecting real in depth knowledge about the program this not the right book! The word "POWER" in the title is not supported by the context of the book! (The same go's by the way to all of the series of ""power"" by this publisher)

In the essence this book is a good operation manual, with a few examples and even less and far in between tips & tricks. This how the original lame operation manual should have look like from the beginning!

A few parts in the book are totally missing like in chapter 10 about the Resonators and I quote "This effect is better understood when heard, so open up the Resonators example set and try it for your self " the only problem this set is not on the accompany CD! This set is also not on the book web site!

After all said and done if you just forget the word "POWER" this is a good book for beginner level, it's clear enough and easy to understand.

          5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book.......2006-02-01

The author of this book works for M-Audio, and is an avid user of Ableton Live. He wrote this book with passion and finesse, and it is an invaluable reference in my collection. I've been a DJ/Producer for a number of years, and there are a couple of sections in this book that made me look at the game from new and different angles. The book is filled with several ways of using this software that I wouldn't have come up with on my own. I would recommend this book to anyone who uses (or plans to use) Live 5.0.

5 out of 5 stars Unique system for improving the reader's playing performance.......2005-06-11

The Original Poker Diary by dedicated poker player Jonas Barrish offers a unique system for improving the reader's poker playing performance through developing a more focused awareness of play, strategy, and opponents regardless of the specific type of poker game being played. A good many world-class poker players keep detailed notes of their games to help them review successes and learn from their mistakes. Barrish incorporates this principle into The Original Poker Diary with 300 journal entry pages for players to record on in order to keep track of "Memorable Hands", "Player Notes", "Bad Beats", "Tells", and more. Enhanced with a comprehensive glossary of poker terms and slang, The Original Poker Diary will prove to be an invaluable addition to any serious poker player's personal reference shelf.

4 out of 5 stars My poker obsessed friend loved it........2005-05-19

I don't know much about poker, but my friend does and he has so many poker books, but not this one. It is a cool diary for poker players and he uses his and loves it. It shows him how much money he loses LOL. It makes a great gift.

2 out of 5 stars A nice concept, but a plain old spiral notebook is better .......2005-04-26

Any serious poker player knows they should keep a notebook or diary; to record thoughts, results, mistakes, notes on opponents, etc, but very few actually go to the trouble of doing so. I've often wished I had better organized and more consistent records, and hoped this volume might help.

The book is tacky, poorly designed and ill-suited for its intended purpose, to serve as a notebook/diary. The second page reads "THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO THE NEXT MILLION-DOLLAR POKER CHAMPION (insert your name here)." There is little more than a paragraph on how to use the book, an example entry, and then 300 pages of blank entries. Each entry template is three pages, with blanks for date, time, location, checkboxes for game and limit, win/loss, and then sections for "Memorable Hands," "Notes on Players," "Bad Beats," "Tells," and "Other Notes." Each section has about ten blank lines. These choices are ill-considered, and it's hard to conform one's actual thoughts to their rigid template. And what's the point of recording bad beats every session, self-pity?

The book is thicker and heavier than a typical notebook, making it less convenient to carry in the car or a suitcase. The binding is more rigid than most books, and getting a page flat enough to write on comfortably requires breaking the spine.

The Original Poker Diary is clearly aimed at very casual players or well-meaning aunts and grandmothers looking for a "cute" gift. A blank notebook would be both a lot cheaper and more useful.

Written for readers with at least some Perl programming experience, Mastering Algorithms in Perl delivers a solid library of algorithms written in Perl for business and mathematical computing. From data structures to cryptography and more advanced mathematical algorithms, this book provides a worthwhile guide to extending Perl's coding capabilities.

The best thing about Mastering Algorithms in Perl is the scope at which it covers the universe of algorithms while refraining from getting bogged down in academic detail. Besides basic data structures--a lynchpin of books on algorithms--the authors provide dozens and dozens of algorithms for sorting, searching, and doing mathematical computations of all kinds. While they discuss "Big-O" notation and assume a general familiarity with math, they don't overwhelm the reader. (You can even borrow the code without needing a math degree to understand it.) The focus is on efficient, reusable Perl subroutines written and compiled by three Perl experts.

Standout chapters include extending Perl's already powerful string processing abilities, game programming, and cryptography. Generally, the authors achieve a good mix of more advanced (and less well-known) algorithms, along with the basics. Chances are you won't need to use all the dozen or so sorting algorithms presented here, but the authors include them all, just in case. As a reference and tutorial, readers can pick and choose what they need for real-world Perl development.

There hasn't been a book dedicated exclusively to Perl algorithms prior to the publication of this one. In all, Mastering Algorithms in Perl fills a useful niche by compiling a powerful library of Perl algorithms that will be useful for anyone who works with this programming language, whether in business or academic computing. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Perl data types, Big-O notation, data structures, queues, deques, linked lists, binary trees, sorting and searching algorithms, game and dynamic programming, sets and multisets, matrices and graphs, string matching and parsing, 2-D geometry, number systems, cryptography (including DES and RSA), probability, statistics, and numerical analysis.

                Book Description

Many programmers would love to use Perl for projects that involve heavy lifting, but miss the many traditional algorithms that textbooks teach for other languages. Computer scientists have identified many techniques that a wide range of programs need, such as: Using algorithms explained in this book, you too can carry out traditional programming tasks in a high-powered, efficient, easy-to-maintain manner with Perl. This book assumes a basic understanding of Perl syntax and functions, but not necessarily any background in computer science. The authors explain in a readable fashion the reasons for using various classic programming techniques, the kind of applications that use them, and -- most important -- how to code these algorithms in Perl. If you are an amateur programmer, this book will fill you in on the essential algorithms you need to solve problems like an expert. If you have already learned algorithms in other languages, you will be surprised at how much different (and often easier) it is to implement them in Perl. And yes, the book even has the obligatory fractal display program. There have been dozens of books on programming algorithms, some of them excellent, but never before has there been one that uses Perl. The authors include the editor of The Perl Journal and master librarian of CPAN; all are contributors to CPAN and have archived much of the code in this book there. "This book was so exciting I lost sleep reading it." Tom Christiansen

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, broad-ranging coverage of algorithms.......2007-07-23

This is a very accessible introduction to data structures and algorithms in Perl. It doesn't go into a lot of theory, it isn't going to answer your computer science homework, but it does give a good feel for the various applications of algorithm research.

Plus, the code is all in Perl, which is not as unreadable as received wisdom asserts. It's certainly more accessible for the interested Perl-savvy amateur than the pseudocode in Introduction to Algorithms.

Obviously, you're going to have to move onto the likes of Cormen et al, if you're really serious about this stuff. And practically speaking, yes, most of this can be found in CPAN without you having to worry your pretty little head about the mechanics. If just getting something done is your main concern, then this is not the book for you.

Plus, it must be admitted that the level of detail varies across the chapters, and some of the explanations can be opaque, even for the simple stuff. I felt I had to work unnecessarily hard to comprehend some of the material: the discussion of the A* algorithm, some of the tree-related algorithms and the section on compression all suffered from this to varying degrees. This is the sort of book which requires concentration (plus copious scrap paper for scribbling down arrows and boxes) to get anything from.

But to complain that Perl doesn't need you to write these data structures from scratch, and it isn't a suitable language for this sort of thing anyway, is to miss the point of at least part of the book. It's about communicating the intellectual pleasure of wrapping your head around these fundamental bits of computer science, and in that respect it succeeds admirably. If you're looking for an introduction to the area, this is definitely worth getting hold of.

5 out of 5 stars Accessible discussion of algorithm topics implemented in Perl.......2006-12-17

If you have ever studied algorithms and data structures, then balanced trees and O(N) notation may still be a painful memory. Also, part of Perl's strength is in its built in parsing and sorting features so why would you need to know other ways of doing the same job? If your work does not challenge Perl's features then you probably do not need this book. However, if you have no computer science background and Perl is your language of choice then this book requires serious consideration.

The book is concise and the advice given in concepts like choosing an appropriate data structure or in benchmarking your program is actually quite sound. It covers a wide number of topics such as sorting, searching, sets and matrices together with material you may not find in a data structures book like geometry, cryptography and statistics.

Your choice depends on the task at hand. If you're looking for a Perl book where you can find routines to encrypt a string or find the maximum distance between two points then this book will not disappoint. Indeed, I believe that anyone serious about programming would benefit greatly from some of the Computer Science subjects discussed and implemented in Perl that are offered in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good implementation of popular algorithms.......2005-05-27

Klowledge of algorithms and data structures is vital for effective programming, and Perl is one of the most popular programming languages around, so this book fills a long-needed niche.

If you've ever looked at "Introduction to algorithms " by Cormen et al (CLR), this book will look familiar. It covers many of the topics covered in CLR, though not in such theoretic depth. It does, however, have mountains of Perl code implementing those algorithms.

This book can seemingly have two purposes - one is to learn algorithms (as the title suggests), and the other is to understand the implementation of algorithms in Perl.

IMHO, the authors fulfilled the second part quite well. For the first part, CLR is a excellent book and is hard to better. I don't think "Mastering algorithms" explained the topics in a clear enough way to compete with CLR, but it can indeed be a terrific companion to CLR (get the first edition, used copies cost pennies). Read about the algorith m in CLR, understand it from the pseudo-code and diagrams, then take "Mastering algorithms with Perl" and learn the Perl implementation of the algorithm.

5 out of 5 stars A great book on the subject.......2004-07-28

This book is a great book, not only on the subject of algorithms, but also on how to implement them in Perl. A huge number of topics are covered, from Data Structures, to Searching/sorting, to cryptography, and much more. And what I found to be among the most useful additions was that for every subject, they give you a full implementation on the subject. I've read a few books on algorithms, but this is one of the most easy to read, and definitely one of the most practically useful. Recommended for any Perl programmer, regardless of skill.

2 out of 5 stars MAP makes many promises, but fails to deliver........2003-08-19

As a guy ( engineer not computer expert ) who uses computers everyday to help his research, I would steer you away from using Perl for any task involving mathematical concepts more complicated than addition/subtraction/multiplication and addition.

I heard this same advice before buying this book and ignored it, I really wish I had listened back then.

While MAP has some nice pictures which broadly describe the essential concepts, it will give you no idea as to how to actually implement those ideas. Further, all the code is available in CPAN ( If you don't know CPAN, check it out before going any further - at the very least install a module ) and much ( at least what I attempted to use ) appeared to be broken.

Authors of computer books are usually good about answering e-mail but these authors did not deign to respond to mine.

If you are out there, struggling to learn algorithms, I would suggest taking a good computer course on the subject. I'm 99% certain the course will be taught in C/C++ or similar language -these languages have tremendous advantages over Perl when it comes to data structures and, believe me, even as a novice I've come to appreciate them...

If you really know algorithms and wish to write a few in Perl, you can do without this book. Pick up Deitel & Deitel's 'Perl: How to Program' instead or O'Reilly's basic book ( which is good, but I prefer Deitel and Deitel ) ....besides D&D answer their e-mail.
