5 out of 5 stars Just what the title says.......2006-02-19

This book is exactly what I was hoping for. I have been working through Romanus Wolter's _Kick Start Your Dream Business_ with great success, but I needed some specific information about being an entrepreneur in Canada. This book is a great source for addresses and links for Canadian government offices and other Canadian resources. It also mentions other things unique to Canada that I found helpful like "Excise Tax", which will effect my particular business. The book also has good general information on starting and running a business. My only complaint about the book is that my husband noticed a few typos.

5 out of 5 stars A Book So Well Written and Argued it Could Convince You, Yes You, the Steel Strike of 1919 Still Matters.......2006-08-29

If American labor history during the second half of the twentieth century had high priests, it is safe to call David Brody one of them. Among students of union-management relations, working class life and culture, and the place of the state in industrial labor relations from the end of the nineteenth century to the close of the second world, coming to terms with his understandings of how the Steel industry in the United States operated is an absolute necessity. His 1969 publication Labor in Crisis: The Steel Strike of 1919, is a more fleshed out treatment of the American Federation of Labor's failed attempt to force union recognition upon the steel industry, which he dealt with in the closing chapter of his path breaking 1960 study Steelworkers in America: The Non-Union Era. Labor in Crisis asks a two deceptively simple question that can only justly be answered with varying levels of complexity: First, why did the events of 1919 play out as they did? Second, what mechanisms fell in to place less than two decades later that allowed the Steel Workers Organizing Committee to gain a contract with the United States Steel Corporation without a fight?

Brody begins his explanation of the dramatic events of 1919 more than a quarter of a century before in Homestead, Pennsylvania during the violent and ultimately losing strike which the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers waged against Carnegie Steel in 1892. Beyond simply treating the strike at Homestead as a touchstone that ex-plains the negligible place which labor unions would have for most of the next forty-five years by explaining how the lost strike represented a shift in power materially in the owners favor, he goes deeply into the mindsets of the so-called "practical" men of steel: Andrew Carnegie, Henry C. Frick, Charles Schwab. Though Carnegie was dead, Frick was dying, and only Schwab was still highly active in the industry as head of Bethlehem Steel by that time, all left a powerful mark upon the whole industry.

The lessons they took away from their experiences in dealing with the hyper-competitive steel market of late nine-teenth century America was that only management, unhindered by any contractual obligations to its workforce, could hope to cope with vicissitudes of the market and remain profitable. Coupled with technological advancement and the massive immigration of unskilled labor from Southern and Eastern Europe to Steel towns throughout the Midwest, the trade unions of the time were in no position to keep management from any of their prerogatives. Though Brody points out that there was long a finance capital side to the Steel industry that was nowhere near as hostile to organized labor as those involved in the practical making of it, they were decidedly junior partners.

With the onset of the Great War, and especially with the United States entrance into it during the (somewhat) pro-labor Wilson administration, organized labor and workers in general, found the situation in the Steel industry very much altered. With the Federal government insisting upon labor peace and forcing recognition of workers' shop committees down the throats of companies who wanted military contracts, various unions were able to easily gain control of these outlets for bargaining about wages and conditions of employment. Had the war lasted longer, postulates Brody, a great many of the changes that were made in the Steel industry during the Great Depression and World War II may very well have been achieved in next few years, or even months. As fate had it, the war ended in November 1918, and all major and, nearly all minor, companies in the industry began taking extremely hard lines against known and suspected activists and sympathizers. Over the next ten months high levels of organizing and varying levels of repression would take place in Steel towns throughout the country, and the trade unionists who were organizing that labor force would feel them-selves compelled to call for a strike that they almost to a man felt they could not win.

As Brody explains the Strike in September of 1919, the event broke down as two different conflicts; one fought publicly and another fought privately. Within the public space, you had the Steel industry most publicly represented in the person of Elbert Gary, the grandfatherly and exceedingly polite head of the United States Steel Corporation, who framed the issue of the strike as a question of whom would actually manage the industry. His pronouncements about the strike and the industry were more widely covered than any other steel mans'. On the labor side, three people tended to crop up as representing workers. Samuel Gompers, long time head of the American Federation of Labor; John Fitzpatrick, head of the Chicago Federation of Labor and acting Chairman of the committee overseeing organization of steel workers; and finally William Z. Foster, Secretary Treasurer of the CFL and the committee responsible for organizing steel workers and an utterly brilliant union tactician and strategist. Though Foster had the least real decision making power of the three, the fact that he was formerly a member of the much feared Industrial Workers of the World and was unrepentant in his radicalism during a post-war red scare made him a lightning rod for criticism--Foster would soon join the American Communist Party and, by the end of World War II, be head of it.

The private side of the conflict occurred in the streets of Steel towns throughout the country. More than a dozen strikers were killed, and civil rights and liberties violations were recorded throughout the country. The situation could only be described as industrial warfare. Throughout Western Pennsylvania, but also in Gary, Indiana and Lackawanna, New York insurgency against entrenched power of both political and industrial nature took place with the most violent consequences, and sometimes even short term political change--Lackawanna, New York elected its one and only Socialist Mayor in November 1919, and Buffalo steel workers put a Socialist on the Common Council. Mostly though, the private war on organized labor and their own workforce led to a demoralization of most of the workers involved in the strike, and showed to what lengths organized capital and often the state were willing to go to assert their power.

Brody's postscript dealing with the anti-climactic organization of the industry, beginning in 1937, illuminates the strike even more by showing just how much the industry had changed by the Great Depression. Without going into great detail, nearly all the circumstances that had made Steel impenetrable to organized labor after World War I had changed drastically in the 1920's and even more so in the thirties with the onset of the Great Depression and New Deal legislation. In many ways the strike in 1919 was the last major strike against an industry that had its formative experiences in the nineteenth century before that guard retired or died. Brody shows with great clarity that the game had changed radically and abruptly. This is a perfectly reasonable explanation.

              Book Description

              Product Details/Synopsis

Faith R. Foyil gives birth on an offshore island and discovers that parenting, unlike the alcohol and jewelry, is not "duty-free."

A one-time (New) Jersey Girl turned Bahama Mama, the author demonstrates that being a mom is a universally- wacky experience no matter if you're living in a big city, a small town or on a 21-mile long tropical island.

In Sunny Daze we learn that even beautiful island life can be challenging to a woman who had previously only "fished regularly for compliments." Even normal household maintenance is tricky to someone who had assumed "Phillips and Flat Head were Nickelodeon cartoon characters."

Whimsical essays address family topics running the gamut from puberty to the postal service, from getting lost to getting a colonoscopy, from toddlers to taxes. When the author describes leaving her tropical paradise home for turbulent airline trips with sniffing pre-schoolers you'll wonder if she's growing bananas or going bananas.

              5 out of 5 stars LIFE'S A REAL BEACH FOR THIS MOM.......2006-03-31

Aaah, what could be better than life in Paradise? The warm, sunny beaches, the tropical island sun, the laid back island attitude...the...the...

The constant power outages? The sparse grocery selections? The gecko infestations? What happened to Paradise?

Faith R. Foyil can tell you all about it and does in her hilarious new book, SUNNY DAZE. Foyil's adventures, er...misadventures as an American transplant to the Bahamas is a reminder that American moms don't exactly have a corner on the market when it comes to day-to-day stress. Hardly!

In true Erma Bombeck style, Foyil sets us on an adventure with her where we learn, perhaps a little shockingly, that daily life in the Bahamas isn't all about volleyball tournaments and free margaritas. Instead, we sit amusedly by while she tells us about:

              *Boating hell

              *No-see-ums and other strange infestations

*Driving, or rather trying to drive in the Bahamas

*The physics of packing too much stuff in too little space for a U.S. to Bahamas flight

              *Her, uh, "moving" medical procedure

Foyil's sense of humor is sharp and her wit fresh. She'll make you laugh with such observations as, "Today's Game Cube kids can't possibly comprehend how quickly home technology has advanced in the last twenty-five years. They master Microsoft Excel and Publisher around the same time they learn not to pick their noses in public" (p.122) and bring you into her story with her genuine voice. She sounds not like a mom who's trying to be funny; rather a mom who just happens to notice how funny her life is.

SUNNY DAZE is a quick, light read that will make you chuckle. Good for lounging around the swimming pool with or as a gift to a mom you might know who thinks "life is a beach," it's a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars The insightful essays and witty observations are sure to perk a smile among travelers and mothers alike.......2005-12-10

Sunny Daze: The Humorous Misadventures of a Tropical Island Mom is the true, humorously reflective memoir of a mother who moved to the Bahamas in the early 90's and learned the hard way that life on a stunningly beautiful 21- mile long island isn't all surf and sunshine. The insightful essays and witty observations are sure to perk a smile among travelers and mothers alike, as the author reveals the other side of living in the Bahamas - sluggish mail service, cockroach invasions, fresh milk shortages, and of course the all too familiar parenting challenges such as homework help, summer camp selection, and airline travel. Each vignette is brief making Sunny Daze perfect for light or on-the-go reading, but taken as a whole, Sunny Daze is certain to bring a smile.

4 out of 5 stars Easy read book filled with wit, wisdom and stark realities.......2005-10-12

Sunny Daze: The Humorous Misadventures of a Tropical Island Mom captures the everyday joy and horrors of not only island life, but the life of chaotic situation and harried parents everywhere.

This book is proof that humor will see you through the most trying of situation and sometime in life all you can do is laugh,

Faith Foyil is a very talented writer and this book will having you smiling and laughing out loud from beginning to end.

              5 out of 5 stars hilarious.......2005-05-28

As a tropical island resident, I enjoyed reading Ms Foyil's descriptions of life in the Bahamas, where a sense of humor is very necessary to survive. She captured the essence of the hilarious and sometimes bizarre episodes that fill each day. Her writing is reminicent of Dave Barry's "laugh-out-loud" anecdotes of life in Florida. I highly recommend her book to moms everywhere who would rather laugh about life's little setbacks. It is also an humerous eye-opener for anyone who thinks living on a tropical island is a perfect paradise.

              Book Description

The propensity to make music is the most mysterious, wonderful, and neglected feature of humankind: this is where Steven Mithen began, drawing together strands from archaeology, anthropology, psychology, neuroscience--and, of course, musicology--to explain why we are so compelled to make and hear music. But music could not be explained without addressing language, and could not be accounted for without understanding the evolution of the human body and mind. Thus Mithen arrived at the wildly ambitious project that unfolds in this book: an exploration of music as a fundamental aspect of the human condition, encoded into the human genome during the evolutionary history of our species.

Music is the language of emotion, common wisdom tells us. In The Singing Neanderthals, Mithen introduces us to the science that might support such popular notions. With equal parts scientific rigor and charm, he marshals current evidence about social organization, tool and weapon technologies, hunting and scavenging strategies, habits and brain capacity of all our hominid ancestors, from australopithecines to Homo erectus, Homo heidelbergensis and Neanderthals to Homo sapiens--and comes up with a scenario for a shared musical and linguistic heritage. Along the way he weaves a tapestry of cognitive and expressive worlds--alive with vocalized sound, communal mimicry, sexual display, and rhythmic movement--of various species.

The result is a fascinating work--and a succinct riposte to those, like Steven Pinker, who have dismissed music as a functionless evolutionary byproduct.

4 out of 5 stars Clever Title, Serious Book.......2007-04-21

Mithen is a well-published serious evolutionary psychologist, and this book is therefore carefully grounded in current understandings of biological evolution and its relevance to the development of human capacities. His argument is that musical and linguistic abilities are separate evolutionary developments and that whereas in Homo sapiens the linguistic has undercut the role of the more primordial musical; Neanderthals exploited the musical but did not develop linguistic capacities. Mithen's argument is admittedly speculative: he often argues from silence, for instance. But these speculations are informed extrapolations, and exploring them with his help is a highly stimulating, mind-expanding experience.

1 out of 5 stars Wishing it doesn't make it so.......2007-04-14

This book so wants to demonstrate that music was a crucial component of human evolution, as if the author, Steven Mithen, wants to explain why he felt the subconscious need to spend so much money on CDs by Queensryche, but he ultimately fails to prove causality. There is nothing inherent in music creation that helped the human species survive the ravages of hunger, disease, pestilence, and war. There was no "battle of the bands" being waged on the prehistoric Serengeti plain to demonstrate defiance of environmental pressures to adapt. Much of this book is pure conjecture, and Mithen again demonstrates that scientists are the worst group of people to explain music to anyone.

              +++++

"The Neanderthals who inhabited Europe and south-west Asia had brains as large as those of modern humans but behaved in a quite different fashion, one that indicates the absence of language...So, what were the Neanderthals doing with such large brains?...Answer: the Neanderthals used their brains for a sophisticated communication system...[that I call] `Hmmmmm'...
'Hmmmmm'...proved remarkably successful: it allowed them to survive for a quarter of a million years through dramatic environmental change in ice-age Europe, and to attain an unprecedented level of cultural achievement. They were 'singing Neanderthals'--although their songs lacked any words."

The above quotation comes near the end of this fascinating book (and explains its title) by Dr. Steven Mithen, Professor of Early Prehistory (at the University of Reading, England), archeologist, and leading figure in the development of `cognitive archeology.'

What is the aim of this book? Mithen explains:

"We can only explain the human propensity to make and listen to music by recognizing that it has been encoded into the human genome during the evolutionary history of our species. How, when, and why are the mysteries that I intend to resolve [in this book]...This book sets out my own ideas about how music and language evolved, and evaluates the proposals of others by exposing them to the archaeological and fossil evidence...The result is a complete account of not only how music and language evolved but how they relate to the evolution of the human mind, body, and society."

As one who thoroughly enjoyed this book, I can validate what Mithen says above. He does examine a large array of data and proposals from many others and critically analyzes this information. Be aware that to understand the book's conclusions (one of which is quoted above), you have to carefully read and comprehend all the material presented beforehand. Mithen proved (at least to me) that he was well-adept at sorting through all the neurological, linguistical, psychological, biological, and archeological information (to name just some disciplines he delves into). (Don't worry! Mithen explains everything quite well so you're not expected to be an academic with a Ph.D.)

The book itself is divided into two parts. The first part (excluding chapter one which is an introduction) is concerned with what we understand about music and language today. Part two uses those features presented in part one to explain the evolutionary history of language and music.

To give the potential reader an idea of the breadth of this book, I will give the sub-title of each chapter:

              Part I: The Present

              (2) The similarities and differences between music and language
              (3) The brain, aphasia (loss of using or understanding words), and musical savants
              (4) Acquired and congenital amusia (inability to recognize or reproduce musical sounds)
              (5) Music processing within the brain
              (6) Brain maturation, language learning, and perfect pitch
              (7) Music, emotion, medicine, and intelligence

              Part II: The Past

              (8) Communication by monkeys and apes
              (9) The origin of `Hmmmm' (an acronym) communication
              (10) The evolution of bipedalism and dance
              (11) Communication about the natural world
              (12) Is music a product of sexual selection?
              (13) Human life history and emotional development
              (14) The significance of cooperation and social bonding
              (15) `Hmmmmm' communication by "Homo neanderthalensis" (Compare this acronym to that of (9) above)
              (16) The origins of "Homo Sapiens" and the segmentation of `Hmmmmm'
              (17) Modern human dispersal, communicating with the gods, and the remnants of 'Hmmmmm'

There are twenty figures peppered throughout this book. These are interesting and aid the discussion.

Finally, did I agree with everything I read in this book? Of course not. What Mithen is attempting to do is extremely difficult. There has to be some speculation and there is much of it in this book. However, it is reasoned speculation and I was impressed with how Mithen put everything together into a coherent whole.

In conclusion, this book attempts to explain the mystery of "the origins of music, language, mind and body." If you like mysteries like I do, then you should thoroughly enjoy this fascinating book!!

5 out of 5 stars top notch performance of classic guitar literature.......2007-03-09

This is a beautiful album, incorporating some of the most famous guitar works, exquisitely performed. The sound quality is excellent, pairing guitar and string orchestra with fine control. The Warlock suite is new to most hearers, and its rhythmic rendition of folk dances is fun to play over and over.

              5 out of 5 stars Let's make music together.......2007-01-14

It is a nice model about the origins of music and language, called Hmmmmm. Hominid history is clearly written and very informative relying on a huge range of sources.
It is a great work to write such a book and it is fortunate to read such a book. In my opinion, Hmmmmm model is as convincing as the author's domain-specific model (in his book 'prehistory of mind') in understanding the pre-history mind.

                Book Description

Seeking to explore the blurred boundary between religion and pop culture, God in the Details offers a provocative look at the breadth, diversity, and persistence of religious themes in contemporary American consciousness. Representing a diverse range of disciplines, the contributors criticaly assess the ways in which American popular culture reappropriates traditional religious symbols to serve the purposes of particular communities.

This book is an attempt to highlight venues in American popular culture that contain elements of religion or replace it all together. The thesis sounds very intriguing and caught my attention right off. At times, however, the essays that compose the book seem to be too much of a stretch. They can seem to force the analogy of religion to some topics. Not all the meat of the essays is unfounded. Many points that are raised are worth reading. I perhaps had higher expectations of the book and was therefore a little disappointed in what insight it had being surrounded by superfluous discussion. The essays are intelligently written and carry a heavily academic tone. Overall, I gained a few insights, but not what I would consider 313 pages worth.

look... I am a MS consultant - and have been at it for 15 plus years.

This book is simply the only thing available for quick info any most any scripting topic.

If you want depth on any topic - google it.

If you are in need of a quick fix or immediate info on swicthes etc - this is the book.

                  Simple as that.

If you want to get indepth information there are books on specific topics - nothing like this though -

So ignore the lukewarm reviews - These are from poser admins or guys who think they are great vbscripters and want to put down a great resource.

BTW, I travel the country and find very few "good" vbscripters -

Are you a novice or an experienced administrator or scripter? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Jesse M Torres, has done an outstanding job of writing a third edition of a book that is specifically designed to teach you how to quickly turn routine, repetitive, time-consuming, or complex administrative tasks into simple scripts.

Torres, begins by providing you with an introduction to the four major scripting methods discussed throughout the book. The author then shows you how to control and automate remote systems. He continues by showing you how to automate enterprise management. Next, he covers how to gather inventory information without the use of expensive management systems. The author then shows you how to control and automate remote systems. He continues by covering how to log system events and alert users when events occur. Then, the author shows you how to create and use logon scripts to standardize your environment. Next, he covers how to automate backups and scheduling tasks or scripts. Then, the author shows you how to automate the core tasks for administrating a SQL server. Finally, he covers scripting techniques specifically designed for the new features of Windows XP/2003.

This most excellent book is free of generic filler material. More importantly, this book also provides in-depth coverage of scripting for Windows 2000, XP and 2003.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute gem for administrators, power users and learners.......2006-06-27

If you're an administrator, a power user or someone who wants to learn scripting by practical example, this compendium of truly useful scripts is a must-have addition to your library.

Torres provides a couple of hundred scripts using Windows Shell Scripting ssssss(bless you, bat file), AutoIt, KiXtart and Windows Script Host (using VBscript). He also provides a very basic introduction to scripting with each of these tools.

All of the scripts are immediately useful, though many of them are oriented toward network administration. If you don't have a network to play with, the scripts won't be of much practical help, but do serve as a valuable learning aid.

Torres doesn't just present the scripts bare as some other cookbooks do. He provides brief, but informative, explanations as to what the scripts do and how they do it.

As noted, a must-have addition to the libraries of administrators, power users and those who want to learn how to script.

                  4 out of 5 stars Mini-recipes for WSH.......2004-11-07

If you are familiar with O'Reilly's cookbook books you will be familiar with the format. First the author presents a problem, then a set of solutions and a some description of how the solution works. This book has a similar format but the recipes are more small and the explanations more terse. The author expects that you know a lot about the Windows Script Host to start with and are looking for some help here and there to get through common problems.

The value of a recipes book is first in the areas it covers and problems it solves, and is secondarily in what you can learn from the solutions to the problems presented. Since the solutions are so small and the descriptions relatively brief, the value is really in what problems are covered. The sections I found most relevant were file management and 'inside the registry'. Your mileage may vary though, so I would look at the table of contents before making your purchase to ensure that you are getting enough value for your dollar.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, detailed and thorough reference.......2004-03-06

Now in a newly updated and expanded second edition, Windows Admin Scripting Little Black Book by Microsoft Windows expert Jesse M. Torres is a comprehensive and superbly organized, 464-page instructional reference and resource. Focusing on immediate solutions to difficult problems with security, information gathering; automatic task scheduling; basic information concerning Windows 2000/XP/2003 architecture, and a great deal more, Windows Admin Scripting is an excellent, detailed and thorough reference which is especially recommended to the attention of systems administrators.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference.......2004-03-04

The first edition of this book has been out of print for some time. Mine is ragged from flipping through it. Covering the most common areas of scripting an administrator would be concerned with, you have the additional option of choosing the method best for you from the multiple solutions provided. VBS is covered lots of places, but Batch is becoming a hard topic to find good information on- KiXtart? Forget about it- until the first edition of this book hit, there was little mention of KiXtart in any book! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pocket Reference.......2004-03-03

I ordered this book after reading its review ... I need automate system rollouts, create/modify users, install applications, etc; and this book shows how to do it quickly and simply. I especially like that all examples are shown in 3 different scripting languages, because then I get to choose what language I want to use or whats easiest or appropriate.

This book covers both automating Windows and common 3rd party products. the author picked a good selection of 3rd party apps, as I use most of these in my environment (winzip, ghost, norton antivirus).

I wish the book were physically smaller, like the microsoft pocket guides and came with a cd (although you can download all the scripts and other stuff from the author's website). Besides that, excellent.

                  3 out of 5 stars A Good Secondary Addition.......2004-03-03

This book is a very useful addition, when used in conjunction with, and after a review of, other books on scripting and Windows administration. Throughout the book you will find cut-and-paste scriptlets written in a variety of languages and organized in a relatively easy to find manner. When you aren't looking at scriplets, you will find an abundance of command line syntax references and third-party solutions for very specific issues. As a general administrator, if you know what you want to do, and you don't need a lot of hand-holding or further information, you will probably find it here.

That said, lets discuss the annoyances of this title. First and foremost, a very healthy portion of this book is dedicated to regurgitating the command line syntax (what you get from /? ) from the many utilities referenced (most of which are available from the utilities themselves or the included documentation). The book also includes a lot of command line syntax / usage printouts of 3rd application suites, such as PowerQuest's Drive Image Pro, Symantec's Norton Ghost, LiveUpdate, pcANYWHERE, and Norton AntiVirus, Microsoft Office and WinZip to name a few. It is hard to tell if they were included as a paid endorsement or not, but the author seems to feel that everyone has them, they are your only choice, and does not include a CD-ROM of evaluation software. The book also makes heavy use of non-native scripting languages (KiXtart primarily) as the scripting language of choice to show many of the cut-and-paste solutions; despite it being a foreign command interpreter to the Windows OS and not the industry standard for administrative scripting.

You won't truly learn how to script with this "Admin Scripting" book. You won't learn the in's and out's of the administrative components you are trying to control. You won't be informed about all the ways to accomplish a task if a 3rd party solution is utilized. You will, however, find yourself with a quick reference "idea" book which will come in very handy when you just need the answer to something quickly.
