First Course - not quite.......2001-06-11
This book is for the nerd in you - or at least the nerd in me! While described as "A First Course" it is by no means simple. The first pages jump right into electron theory of pn junctions, rather than Ohm's law, so if neither of these terms mean anything to you, I suggest you look elsewhere. Explanations are clear and concise, with meaningful diagrams explaining conceptually what is going on inside a piece of silicon. I found that I could jump to a section, begin reading, and understand most of what it was talking about, without getting caught up in enormous amounts of mathematics. Without having formal qualification, I cannot say whether this book is incomplete or not, but it was the first book to make me understand exactly *how* a transistor worked and *how* a diode let current flow only one way, without simply describing their behaviour and calling it gospel.

Book Description
This book provides a new paradigm for teaching digital systems design. It puts forth the view that modern digital logic consists of several interacting areas that combine in a cohesive fashion. This includes traditional subjects such as Boolean algebra, logic formalisms, Karnaugh maps, and other classical topics. However, it goes beyond these subject areas by including VHDL, CMOS, VLSI and RISC architectures to show what the field looks like to a modern logic designer. Modern digital design is no longer practiced as a stand-alone art. The integrated approach used in this book is designed to ensure that graduating engineers are prepared to meet the challenges of the new century.
Customer Reviews:
Easily accessible.......2005-03-18
Easily and systematically builds the "toolkit" necessary to understand and design digital circuits. The book starts with basic boolean algebra and states many useful theorems to know. Alongside this symbolic notation is pictoral schematic drawings to visual the flow of data.
Each chapter builds on the previous, starting with simple logic gates (AND, OR, NOT), and then using different combinations to make combinatoral circuits. Then the book changes gears covering technical aspects of different materials used in creating circuits (i.e. CMOS). Followed with some basic electrical theory and introduces VHDL to allow designers to simulate more complicated designs and test that they work correctly. These are the necessary precursors to understanding the following topics including sequential circuits, RAM, and state machines. Finally, it is all put together by examining a simple RISC chip with a simple instruction set.
Novel approach to introductory digital design.......1999-11-10
Uyemura's book is a novel approach to teaching introductory digital design, covering chip design and hardware description languages as well as the classic fundamentals. Although most large digital systems are built on integrated circuits today, IC design was often put off until graduate-level courses. This book does a good job of presenting modern digital design theory and practice in under 500 pages.
The biggest drawback, IMHO, is that the book is overpriced for a thin introductory textbook. I would like to use it in conjunction with Patterson and Hennessy for an undergraduate computer engineering course, but am concerned about making students purchase two expensive books.

Book Description
This major new work from the well-known team of Heath, Jowell and Curtice explores the emergence of New Labour from the ruins of old Labour's four successive defeats at the hands of the Conservatives. Based on the authoritative British Election Surveys the book explores some of the key questions about contemporary British elections and the social and political factors that decide their outcomes. The book begins with the electoral legacy of Margaret Thatcher. How far had Margaret Thatcher converted the electorate to her vision of a free-market, low tax society? Did her electoral success prove the popularity of her policies? Does any scope remain in Britain for left-wing policies? The Rise of New Labour explores the reasons for the failure of previous attempts by Labour under Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock to win the electorate's backing for left-wing policies and dissects the electoral benefits of Tony Blair's abandonment of socialism. The research shows that policies play a much smaller role in electoral change than is usually supposed, and that the parties may be less constrained than they imagine. The book explores the key assumptions underlying New Labour's diagnosis of the problems the party faced during the eighteen years of Conservative rule. It shows that many of these assumptions were at best half-truths and that much of the conventional wisdom (shared by politicians and commentators) about how voters decide is seriously flawed. The book concludes by putting forward a new model of electoral behaviour which is better able to account for the wide array of research findings.

Book Description
New York Times bestselling author Allen St. John started off looking for the world's greatest guitar, but what he found instead was the world's greatest guitar builder. Living and working in Rugby, Virginia (population 7), retired rural mail carrier Wayne Henderson is a true American original, making America's finest instruments using little more than a pile of good wood and a sharp whittling knife. There's a 10-year waiting list for Henderson's heirloom acoustic guitars -- and even a musical legend like Eric Clapton must wait his turn. Partly out of self-interest, St. John prods Henderson into finally building Clapton's guitar, and soon we get to pull up a dusty stool and watch this Stradivari in glue-stained blue jeans work his magic. The story that ensues will captivate you with its portrait of a world where craftsmanship counts more than commerce, and time is measured by old jokes, old-time music, and homemade lemon pies shared by good friends.
Download Description
"In 1994, Eric Clapton came across a Wayne Henderson guitar in a recording studio and decided on the spot that he had to have one. Rarer than Stradivarius violins, these musical works of art are built from near-extinct Brazilian Rosewood, Appalachian spruce, black ebony, and fine mother-of-pearl. With Henderson's keen ear for the vibrations of each piece of wood he uses, each note that comes out of them has the power of a cannon and the sweetness of maple syrup. In Clapton's Guitar, Allen St. John recounts how a perfect acoustic guitar comes into the world and how an artist gauges perfection. Wayne Henderson, master luthier and genius in blue jeans, will tell you that he simply puts penknife to wood and carves away ""everything that isn't a guitar."" This is the story of a master artist, set deep in the mountains of southwestern Virginia in a brick, one-story guitar shop, as busy and chaotic inside as it is simple outside. The space is well-lighted, cluttered with power tools, air hoses, and guitar bodies in various stages of completion. It is in this modest shop that Wayne Henderson crafts some of the most highly coveted acoustic guitars on earth, including one very special instrument he built for Eric Clapton. Normally, there is a ten-year wait for a Henderson guitar, and St. John finds there are no exceptions even for an iconic figure like Clapton. But seeing it as a shortcut to getting his own guitar done, St. John jump-starts the process, and then takes readers with him on a mesmerizing journey into the heart of high-end instrument making with the man The Washington Post calls the ""Mad Scientist of Mountain Music."" Henderson, a small-town wise man, is not only the star of this book as a master guitar maker but also is the star of any stage he sets foot on as a master guitar player, equally at home at Carnegie Hall or the local VFW hall. Around this drolly humorous man circulates a small coterie of colorful characters and inspired musicians, who welcome you for an all-too-brief visit. By book's end, you too will want to be Wayne Henderson's friend. In a rich tapestry of folklore and folksiness, St. John tells the story of building the Clapton guitar in loving detail, from the centuries-old forests where great tonewood grows, to the auction floor of Christie's where one of Clapton's guitars commands over $700,000. It's also a loving look at Wayne's corner of the world, the Blue Ridge mountain hamlets where American traditional music was born, and of Wayne's hometown of Rugby, Virginia, population 7, where the winding roads have kept progress at bay. Whether you love old-time music, unplugged rock, traditional American craftsmanship, or simply gifted storytelling, Clapton's Guitar is an engaging work that you will want to savor and share with friends. Guitar lovers.......2007-09-15
This was a Xmas gift for my son. He loved it and had never seen it.
Great gift for your guitar playing friends
Fabulous book!.......2007-04-14
Not to tout my own book ("The Gold-Plated Porsche"), but one of the nicest things that people said about it was, "I know nothing about Porsches and I'm not even interested in cars, but I loved the book." The same can be said of Allen St. John's book: I know nothing about guitars and have no particular interest in them (or Eric Clapton), but I was fascinated by Wayne Henderson, St. John, their friends, their dogs, their monomaniacal focus on fine guitars...this is a splendid piece of work that far transcends the worlds of Eric Clapton, bluegrass or the crafting of stringed instruments. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates splendidly written nonfiction.
If you love guitars, it's alright..........2007-01-18
I haven't read any other books by Mr. St. John. I have to assume that he is being held back by the need to make this book accessible to non-guitar enthusiasts, as it is written in a rather basic and dry way. I really enjoyed reading this book, however, despite the simple delivery of the story, mainly because I just love reading about guitars and the making of guitars. There are no surprises here for anyone who knows even the basics of guitar making, but I think our love is a disease and reading anything about our love is welcome. St. John's research is very in depth and specific; you know he spent a lot of time making this the best account he could. Other than the clumsy writing, it's a nice read. The pictures section in the middle help to bring the story a wee bit closer to us as well. Now I want to take a trip to the Mountains where Wayne lives and hang out in his shop...
peghead envy.......2007-01-13
This is an excellent book. I learned much about how an acoustic guitar is constructed. As much as I love my guitar (Guild D25M) I want a Henderson! The luthier is a fascinating person/picker. If you love guitars, READ THIS BOOK.
Clapton's Guitar: Watching Wayne Henderson Build the Perfect Instrument by Allen St. John.......2007-01-12
A wonderful, wonderful book! I have the privilege of knowing Wayne Henderson and several others mentioned in this regional book. Even if you think you have no interest in guitars this is so well written, you will when you read it. Mr. St. John exactly captures the personality of Wayne Henderson as well as the other characters. There are moments of great hilarity in this book along with compassion. It is great to read of these good people who take pride in making handmade instruments of such perfection and who also give their talents of playing the instruments for others to hear.

Laughed out loud...........2003-01-05
You can't help but laugh...not at us but near us.
It really is as good as people are saying. But even better, you will see the world with a slightly twisted perspective afterwords...it really is a fun book.
"AN ACERBIC DELIGHT FROM COVER TO COVER".......2000-03-24
'BAY WINDOWS' WROTE: "Simply put, IT'S QUEER WORLD is an acerbic delight from cover to cover.... Simpson excels at casting a cynical gaze over British and American pop culture with hilarious results. To his way of thinking, we're all in the same boat, and guess what - it's leaking! Bitchy yet pithy is a rare combination to pull off, but Mark Simpson has it in buckets."
THE QUEER MONTY PYTHON.......2000-01-22
Is there something they put in the water over there in England? How do those Brits manage to be so funny? This Simpson guy has to be one of the funniest Brits to hit these shores. My boyfriend thought I'd lost it when I was reading this - he had to go into the other room. Really inspired stuff - some of it was a bit more stretching intellectually than I bargained for, but I sort of liked that too.
I DEFY YOU NOT TO LAUGH.......1999-12-27
Just a total blast. I read the rave reviews before I bought it a bit sceptically and thought, `so, impress me.' And, boy, did he! I laughed out loud like a drain so many times and so noisily my roommate thought I was losing it. Then I leant him this book and pretty soon he was hysterical too. So many great moments it's difficult to pick out a favourite. So here's a few: A groom being buggered by lesbian strippers on his Stag night; a disastrous visit to a female prostitute in London's red light district; a surreal discussion about the cultural significance of foreskins with Monty Python worshipping US Marines in Tijuana; an exclusive interview with Oscar Wilde in which he `goes in'; and Simpson's own `George Michael' moment with a cute cop from the Beverly Hills PD.
The funniest, sharpest book I've read in years. I defy you not to laugh.
Don't read it in public........1999-04-02
This is, simply put, the wittiest work of gay non-fiction ever published. Simpson may be the smartest gay essayist of our time. There's no question that he's the funniest.

Slayers roleplaying at your fingertips.......2004-10-12
If you've ever wanted to play a roleplaying game that resembles the Slayers anime, you've probably been dissapointed. Other systems, even anime or fantasy themed ones, had difficulty capturing the unique elements of the Slayers series. But now with this book, you've got all you need to drop your players (or yourself) into the world of Lina Inverse, Gourry, Xellos, and the rest of the Slayers gang. Based on the d20 system, Guardians of Order has done an excellent job of developing unique mechanics that are both balanced and yet allow characters to cast spells all day long, injure their opponents with witty verbal barbs, or fight for truth, justice, and food. The range of base classes and races are varied and interesting and appropriate, new skills are added, and game mechanics are relatively intuitive. The book has a wealth of spells and items, not to mention lots of information about characters and places found in the Slayers world, including stats for all of the main characters (and a lot of the secondary characters) in case you want to have your own characters bump into the legendary Lina Inverse.
All is not perfect with the book, however. Guardians of Order didn't have the rights to add information from the OAVs, novels, manga, or anything aside from the 3 TV series and this hurts the book in terms of proving information on the game world. There are parts where you can very nearly see the authors pulling themselves back from talking about something that wasn't mentioned in the TV series. This also limits the number of creatures and races that the book has to offer, not to mention the spells. As frustrating as this is, it's not crippling as most of this information is easily found online and it's not too difficult to adapt to the game. Another problem, in my opinion, is that some of the prestige classes (namely Pistoleer and Martial Artist) are less utilitarian and more thrown in to cover up for things in the show that don't fit very well into other categories.
Overall, if you want to play Slayers, you owe it to yourself to get this book. GMs may have to do a little more work to encompass the whole of the Slayers universe, but in the end the system is so well done that it's worth it.
Do they even know what they're doing?.......2004-07-11
I picked this up at a local bookstore, since I'm a fan of the entire Slayers franchise. However, as I looked through, half of the book was very basic character summaries, and only a fraction of the rest had anything to do with game mechanics. Also, what they 'did' have looked like the author barely watched the show, and went with cliffnotes.
The spellcasting method shows some promise, but needs to be severly altered to work as well as it should. Magical items are severely underpowered (the Sword of Light is a Major Artifact that generates a blade made of pure Force, not a Brilliant Energy Weapon)
My suggestion, if you want to use Slayers in a D20 environment, watch the show, and write the thing yourself.
Without Research.......2004-05-11
Okay, it's an interesting game source, but honestly, I could have written the thing better myself. My major concern is that there's absolutely no research in the book beyond just watching the damned show: apparently they missed the movie, because they think elves aren't a character race. And dwarves obviously exist, despite that they don't allow THOSE as a character race either.
It's nice to have stats for all the Slayers characters, but these stats are BS. Look: The Slayers characters are epic. Instead of trying to restructure the system so Amelia's 17th level and Lina's only 19th, they should have just worked with the epic system.
Very nifty for the Slayers fan.......2004-04-11
The Slayers d20 book does exactly what it promises to do -- deliver Slayers (the TV series: Slayers, Slayers Next and Slayers Try) as a d20 RPG. Note that due to an almost entirely non-compatible spellcasting system, the bulk of this material can't be brought into a standard D&D game. (That's not to say the spellcasting system is bad -- it looks really nifty -- but rather to observe that if you're buying pre-packaged adventures to GM, this just won't work very well.) The book shines on tying the series to a campaign, races, templates, classes and many creatures. The best part of the book is the addition of all-new psychological warfare skills, feats, and rules -- and these can be integrated with a standard D&D campaign. The weakest parts of the book are the actual spells (many of them just dish out damage in a surprisingly conventional way), magic items (we didn't really need many new magic items anyway), and Mazoku powers (they also just dish out damage in a surprisingly conventional way). Missing from the book would be a pull-out map of the Slayers world (we've seen it in Slayers: Try) like WotC books have for the Forgotten Realms and Oriental Adventures campaign settings. There are some lovely glossies in the middle of the book, but it's just not a replacement.
If you're a Slayers fan rolling your own campaign, this is probably a 5-star kind of book. I'm a Slayers fan extensively modding a campaign, so this is a 4-star kind of book.
Also be warned that the initial printing of this book seems to have been a bit mauled at the printer -- but by the time Amazon expects to ship, they should definitely have that fixed up.

Nothing's more central to the Internet than the TCP/IP protocol stack, so internetworking engineers need to know--or have access to--as much information about it as possible. That's the function of Routing TCP/IP, Volume II, an encyclopedic reference that covers pretty much every aspect of TCP/IP internetworking in deep, practical detail. This is one of the books that working experts should always have at hand, and one of the best choices for people studying for the higher-level Cisco certification examinations, especially the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) laboratory protocols. Jeff Doyle and Jennifer Carroll, both CCIEs, share their background knowledge and practical wisdom in nearly 1,000 information-dense, hardbound pages.
This book works well on a lot of levels, but its careful integration of explanations (statements of applicability and references to standards documents), case studies (usually illustrated with network diagrams), configuration details (input/output listings from Cisco routers), and practical advice (a note on why network address translation isn't much of a barrier against attackers) is key to its success. The illustrators worked overtime, as well, to link Internetwork Operating System (IOS) listings with network diagrams and thereby more effectively illustrate routing behaviors. An excellent index and troubleshooting exercises similar to those on the CCIE practical exam round out this package. --David Wall
Topics covered: How TCP/IP routing works, and how to configure the routing effects you want on Cisco routing equipment. Emphasis falls on Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP), Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP-4), IP multicasting, IPv6, and network address translation (NAT).
Book Description
A detailed examination of exterior routing protocols and advanced IP routing issues
Routing TCP/IP, Volume II, enables you to:
- Master the operational components, configuration, and troubleshooting of BGP-4-the de facto interdomain routing protocol
- Understand the operation, configuration, and troubleshooting of NAT
- Learn how to deploy, configure, and troubleshoot IP multicast routing through an array of case studies and exercises
- Familiarize yourself with the design goals and current state of IPv6, the new generation of the IP protocol
- Implement router management through a diverse range of expert-tested methods
- Test and validate your knowledge with practical, comprehensive review questions, configuration exercises, and troubleshooting exercises
- Further your CCIE preparation while mastering advanced TCP/IP concepts
The complexities of exterior gateway protocols, including TCP connections, message states, path attributes, interior routing protocol interoperation, and setting up neighbor connections, require a comprehensive understanding of router operations in order to manage network growth. Routing TCP/IP, Volume II, provides you with the expertise necessary to understand and implement Border Gateway Protocol Version 4 (BGP-4), multicast routing, Network Address Translation (NAT), IPv6, and effective router management techniques. Jeff Doyle's practical approach, easy-to-read format, and comprehensive topic coverage make this book an instant classic and a must-have addition to any network professional's library.
Routing TCP/IP, Volume II, expands upon the central theme of Volume I: scalability and management of network growth. Volume II moves beyond the interior gateway protocols covered in Volume I to examine both inter-autonomous system routing and more exotic routing issues such as multicasting and IPv6. This second volume follows the same informational structure used effectively in Volume I: discussing the topic fundamentals, following up with a series of configuration examples designed to show the concept in a real-world environment, and relying on tested troubleshooting measures to resolve any problems that might arise. This book helps you accomplish more than earning the highly valued CCIE number after your name; it also helps you develop the knowledge and skills that are essential to perform your job at an expert level. Whether you are pursuing CCIE certification, need to review for your CCIE recertification exam, or are just looking for expert-level advice on advanced routing issues, Routing TCP/IP, Volume II, helps you understand foundation concepts and apply best practice techniques for effective network growth and management.
Customer Reviews:
Although now a bit dated, still essential for the aspiring CCIE.......2006-11-03
"Routing TCP/IP, Volume II" by Jeff Doyle and Jennifer DeHaven Carroll picks up where "Routing TCP/IP, Volume I" left off. And, like the first volume, this volume is an essential "must read" for any aspiring CCIE-candidate.
The book is divided into two sections, Exterior Gateway Protocols and Advanced IP Routing Issues. The first section provides an historical review of Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP), an introduction for Border Gateway Protocol version 4 (BGP), and finally details on configuring and troubleshooting BGP. As with the first volume, numerous configuration and troubleshooting examples and exercises are included. However, one flaw is that the student will need twelve routers to actually stage the configuration example / lab at the end of this section.
The second part, Advanced IP Routing Issues, covers a variety of topics, although Multicast received the bulk of the attention. The Multicast chapters are concise, well written, and easy to digest and understand. Other topics include Network Address Translation (NAT), IPv6, and Router Management. However, since the initial publication date (2001), Cisco support for IPv6 has matured, making the chapter here a bit outdated. In fact, the Second Edition of Volume I does a much better job of incorporating IPv6 throughout. Also, I felt the chapter on Router Management was a bit light and was left with the impression that is tossed in at the last moment as a sort of "filler".
The reader should definitely make sure that he or she is comfortable with the topics presented in "Routing TCP/IP, Volume I" before delving into this book. Concepts covered in the first volume, such as Interior Gateway Protocols (RIP, OSPF, EIGRP) and the fundamentals of route redistribution, are referenced throughout this volume. If you do not completely understand the topics covered in Volume I, you will likely have a difficult time grasping the topics and concepts covered here in Volume II.
All in all, a very good book for a student working towards a CCIE. You will likely need to augment the BGP coverage with Halabi's "Internet Routing Architecture". When I first bought the book a few years back, I would have given it 5 stars. However, given some of the outdated topics I mentioned earlier, I've knocked it down to 4. A Second Edition refresh, similar to what was done for "Routing TCP/IP, Volume I", would likely bump it back to 5 stars. Good luck!

Best-of-class book for external routing!.......2006-02-06
CiscoPress's "Routing TCP/IP - Volume II" by Doyle and Carroll is one of the `must-have' books on any CCIE's R&S bookshelf OR any network admin who needs to understand the intricacies of external routing. I have referenced this book many times for my preparations for the R&S lab and real-world implementations.
The book's first 320 pages are dedicated to BGP. I believe this book does the best job at preparing a R&S lab candidate for BGP (better than Halabi's book). For instance, the book does an excellent job at describing the issues and nuances of IBGP and IGP synch starting on page 118. The BGP configs are complete and complex - you will be diving into some of the more arcane commands quickly (for instance - aggregate-address, as-set, backdoor).
The NAT section is probably the weakest of the subjects covered in this book, and can be found in other CiscoPress books. Still, the information presented here will be enough for the R&S lab. The next 3 chapters are devoted to IP multicast. Again, as with the BGP section, I do not believe you will find better material for the R&S lab in any other CiscoPress book (even considering Williamson's multicast book). I am admittedly weak in multicast, and Auto-RP did not `click' for me till I read this book.
If I picked up this book, and dangled it, I would probably have about 20 pages of notes fall out of the book. The book crams in a lot of information (even considering that it fills more than 900+ pages). I consider this book one of the `holy trinity' of R&S books (along with Doyle's Routing TCP/IP - Volume 1 and Clark's LAN Switching book).
I give this book 5 pings out of 5:

Routing TCP/IP, Volume II presents a detailed examination of exterior routing protocols (EGP and BGP) and advanced IP routing issues such as multicast routing, quality of service routing, IPv6, and router management. You will learn IP design and management techniques for implementing routing protocols efficiently. Network planning, design, implementation, operation, and optimization are stressed in each chapter. Cisco-specific configurations for each routing protocol are examined in detail. Plentiful review questions and configuration and troubleshooting exercises make this an excellent self-study tool for CCIE exam preparation.
The best book on Bgp and Multicast.......2004-04-14
Perfect for Lab and real example on Bgp and Multicast!
Excellent BGP and Multicasting Information........2004-02-27
I personally feel this book is even better than Volume I. Several hundred pages are spent on BGP and Multicasting, going through details that aren't necessarily found in the more well-known books on those topics. An excellent companion to Halabi and Williamson.
The book was a major help to me in achieving my CCIE R&S. I just with Jeff would write a Security book!
