Book Description
In this study of Birmingham's iron and steel workers, Henry McKiven unravels the complex connections between race relations and class struggle that shaped the city's social and economic order. He also traces the links between the process of class formation and the practice of community building and neighborhood politics.
According to McKiven, the white men who moved to Birmingham soon after its founding to take jobs as skilled iron workers shared a free labor ideology that emphasized opportunity and equality between white employees and management at the expense of less skilled black laborers. But doubtful of their employers' commitment to white supremacy, they formed unions to defend their position within the racial order of the workplace. This order changed, however, when advances in manufacturing technology created more semiskilled jobs and broadened opportunities for black workers.
McKiven shows how these race and class divisions also shaped working-class life away from the plant, as workers built neighborhoods and organized community and political associations that reinforced bonds of skill, race, and ethnicity.

Exelente reference book........2007-10-01
I always was thinking in buy or not this book becasue of some other customer opinions, so i took the risk and bought it.
Great book, a lot of information regrading tips for inductor, transformer, softstart, step-down and flyback, it has many pages about everything abouth SMPS and Linear Supply.
If you want a book for reference on SMPS, buy this one, it has many examples, calculations, etc, and is a pleasure read this book.
You will receive what you pay.
Saludos...
Useful and enjoyable.......2006-09-17
I bought this book as a complement to Abraham I. Pressman's Switching Power Supply Design.
These two books are very similar, but do not overlap all that much. I am glad to have them both.
This book can be used as a textbook or as a reference. It is so well organised you can find what you need very fast through the table of contents. Concepts are supported by schematics and graphs.
I am using this book to learn analog design and to learn to build my own switching power supplies.
A good book for its purpose.......2006-06-02
I recently purchased both this book, and Switching Power Supply Design by Abraham I. Pressman. I had cursory knowledge of SMPS from datasheets and appnotes from National Semiconductors and IRF.
Overall, i like the other book better. The chapter layouts speak to the intended purpose of the books. In this book, the progression is from the start of an off-line power supply to then end. instead of starting with what the switching power supply is, and such, this book starts with input circuitry and startup methods. some suitable off-line topolgies are detailed. It is only later in the book that the basic switching power supplies, like the buck converter are detailed. It makes sense -- these supplies are billed for regulation in the book.
I found some of this book annoying. for instance, the author often refers to bifilar windings. there is no glossary entry for this. the index refers to multiple pages where "bifilar" is mentioned, but it is never defined. Similarly, "flyback" is not defined.
if you want to learn power supplies, i reccomend the book by Abraham I. Pressman over this one.
What an adventure!.......2002-12-12
I did the right thing - I ordered this AND the venerable Abrahamson book.
Up until that time I had only discerned the subject in hints and veiled inter departmental discussions - and it was the start of a wonderful two months period in which so much was revealed - I have rarely enjoyed a book so much! Now look, I don't work for Mr Amazon.com, but I would urge you to get both. This book (the one by Keith Billings) has lots of detail which the Abrahamson book skips a wee bit. They dovetail together beautifully - and the Abrahamson book includes a bit more breadth on the possible topologies. One of my favorite chapters in THIS book is the excellent exposition on biploar and FET drive circuits. Its made very clear - this man is a BORN teacher...
This book even tells you how to select fuses, filter capacitors (the point being that the values you chose last month might well be right, but after this text you will know with far greater confidence, as it were)
I must say that the one thing that both books are a little light on is the subject of CUK convertors, which I will have to get wisdom on from elsewhere I guess. The other thing that NEITHER books mention, which in fact is hard to find, is the design of planar transformers. This is a complex area involving quite a lot of maths, so I've been told. You can find some material in IEEE transactions on power electronics, and similar journals, but you may have to hunt a bit. Philips / Ferroxcube are good for this, too.
The Abrahamson book covers current fed convertors. This includes a section on flyback current fed convertors - in which I think he forgot to elaborate on the case where the input transformer returns to the input, rather than the output, which appears to reduce input ripple and improves the power factor. But this case is handled quite well in the references given at the end of the chapter, so no matter. Its a very exciting chapter - but the Billings book doesn't cover them at all, which is a pity, since there's quite a lot of utility for these very stable topologies, involving quite light voltage and current strain on the switching transistors.
I wish the books could go on even further, but all I can be is grateful...
I must say also that the safety aspect of design is covered well in both books, both European and American.
Excelent refernce source.......1999-09-13
This book does an excelent job of providing facts and information needed to design switchmode supplies. It gives numerical examples and shows the underlying theories.

Customer Reviews:
Misleading title.......2002-01-10
The book is less about switchgear and more about the broad field of electrical engineering. It gets so far off track that it even has diagrams of resistor-diode logic circuits. It covers far too many topics in very little detail. For example, from the title I expected more than four very short paragraphs on current transformer burden. My initial disappointment told me to return the book; but I have a hard time letting go of any book with any use, even if I paid too much.
An Odd and Ungainly Reference.......2000-09-28
You know there may be a slight problem when you find large numbers of punctuation and grammatical errors early in a big book sold at this price. When you more than once find two or three contributors' articles rehashing the same material (but using slightly different "standard" diagram symbols), your reservations about the editorial standards involved increase. Learning half a dozen different ways to control blenders and hair clippers, when you were thinking more of 13.8 KV switchgear, is a further awkward twist. Want a sampling of makes, models and photos? Forget it. I do hope you want to take Electric Motors 101 several times, though. (I didn't even think it was ABOUT motors when I bought it!)
So anyway, I was pretty bummed, and I wouldn't have shelled out for it, I don't think. I'm keeping it around, though. I did come across some nice tables, and it has an index. There's also one, slpendid, nuts, bolts and numbers article on coordinating overcurrent protection. I mean, this guy does this to relax! They should have put it in a small book and charged [less] for it. (It would take up less room and be lighter to hold.) Some people could also find a use for the breakdown torques of induction and synchronous motors, etc. (I'd let them add that to the small book), but there's just too much disorganization and fat.
I would speculate that one way to make a living is to hustle articles from eager contributors into a "big, expensive book", kick back and enjoy the margin. I for one will keep this in mind while shopping in future.

Customer Reviews:
A fun book.......2006-11-10
Vicky Decoster appears to be an up and coming Erma Brombeck. You will enjoy her stories of life and the funny times we encounter growing up.
Nice little read when you want to feel like you're not alone.......2004-01-22
Vicky hits a chord with many women, and with people who may know a women, in a style one might expect if she were the love-child of Erma Bombeck and Dave Berry. Like these writers, you get the sense that her everyday experiences are not that ordinary - but yet common to all. I hope to see more works by Vicky, unless her life has slowed down and become boring. Let's hope not.
A "Must Have" for the woman in your life!.......2003-12-30
Vicky DeCoster's book, The Wacky World of Womanhood, really hits home! The humor is real and keeps the reader engrossed throughout the entire book. (I've even wondered at times if she somehow tapped into my head...) A breath of fresh air, and a must read for ALL women!
laughed out load.......2003-11-24
The book was great. So much reminded me of my own experiences but Vicki made you see the fun and joy in it all. I was in tears I laughed so hard and both my husband and I enjoyed the laughter it brought to our day.
I'm still laughing!.......2003-11-12
Vicky has quite a way with words and makes everything funny! I would highly recommend this book to women of all ages!
Book Description
Takes you from the fundamentals of fingerpicking to five authentic blues tunes. With graded exercises, illustrated tips, plus standard notation and tablature.
Customer Reviews:
Not my favorite style of blues.......2007-09-15
There are many styles of acoustic blues. If you are going to invest the time needed to learn to play, you must find the style that most touches your soul. For me, this set of book and cd isn't the one.
Try Happy Traum's 2 dvd set "Easy Steps to Acoustic Blues Guitar", way better in my opinion, and more soulful blues. The 2nd dvd by Traum in this set is a masterfull teaching of fingerpicking, whereas the first is more on strumming patterns and learning the basic form. I recommend both, but if it is only fingerpicking you want, get #2 by itself.
Happy Traum is a great teacher...the best I've encountered for home study.
Also try his dvd "The Blues Bag" for 11 blues songs in varied styles.
Relatively user friendly: better than most!.......2007-01-28
I have tried MANY self-teach finger picking books - this one is amongst the best. Clear explanations, deliberately staged lessons, a useful CD and, perhaps most important of all, a tone of respect for the old flat picker who wants to learn how to use his fingers. In a couple of hours, I was on my way to being able play the way I have wanted to for many years.
Good practice book.......2006-11-07
Helpful book for widening your repetoire, for beginner-intermediate level. CD is helpful for hearing more advanced songs.
A great start for a Blues Fan!.......2006-10-15
I just got this one a few weeks ago and I have to say that I like it! If you are just starting out, know your basic open position and C & F barre chords, and would like to learn some Fingerstyle Blues, this is the book. It takes you from the absolute beginning up thru 5 tunes that represent various Blues styles.
I would place this book just a little below the Mark Hanson books only because it is focusing on one style, Blues, and it only uses a few patterns. BUT, it uses these patterns to great effect, so don't let that throw you off. As for the quality of the lessons, I would place them up with Mark's. They are easy to follow and are paced well. I feel that anyone that has a desire to learn this style, and practice, will be playing the Blues in no time!
You will learn some great exercises in the keys of A, E, and G, along with technics like Hammer-Ons and Pull-Offs, Brushstrokes, Vamps, Heel Damping, how to practice a steady Alternating Bass, tips on how to Sing the blues, and more. The TAB is clear and easy to read. I have the 8 1/2"x11 book, and have seen the A4 size one, and both have clear and easy to read print. The 5 tunes you will be able to play at the end of the book, "M&O Blues", "Beekman Blues", "Big Road Blues", "32-20 Blues", and "Black Rat Swing" are, besides fun to play, great tunes to add to your list of songs.
Some other reviews state that Mark, the teacher, rambles on and on, and as a matter of fact he does. But to me it sounds like what you would hear if you sat down with a friend, or someone who was explaining things from the ground up, and that is what this book is about. So it don't really bother me that much.
What does bother me are the following. First not every exercise it on the CD, and what is on the CD is at performance speed. There is no slow & fast demos of the exercises. Second, Mark goes off on his own "improvising" that stray from the TAB in someplaces. Not real bad, I am talking about adding a note here and there, not changing a whole passage. But still for a beginner, which is what this book is aimed at, it would throw them off. And third, his guitar is out of tune on about 1/4 of the demonstrations, and that is kind of distracting.
But even with that, I will recommend this book to those who are just starting out learning Fingerstyle guitar, especially if they like the Blues. Find it with the CD or Tape, and get the Blues! But the Mark Hanson book "The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking" would still be my first choice for people who want a more rounded approach to Fingerstyle playing
Great Materials for Learning Fingerstyle Blues.......2006-08-11
The title 'Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar' does not mean the materials in the book are all elementary, or the materials are targeted for the absolute beginner. In fact, the tunes at the end are not at all 'beginner's tunes'. An experienced flatpicker will find this book a good place to start for learning fingerstyle blues guitar. Such a guitarist, with patience, should be able to start from the middle of the book, for a quick taste of the joy of playing this relatively simple and yet extremely expressive blues guitar style. Highly recommended.

By definition, the notion of the dialectic--that powerful philosophical tool for understanding the constant ebb and flow of argument, history, and reality itself--is hard to pin down. And so is The Digital Dialectic: New Essays on New Media, a smart collection of mostly academic essays, which aims to identify a dialectic at the heart of the digital technologies currently reshaping the way we see and know the world. Just what that dialectic might be varies from contributor to contributor--as does the quality of the essays, which originated as presentations at a 1995 conference--but Lunenfeld's elegant running commentary does a nice job of teasing out their common concerns.
Grouped in sections with headings like "The Real and the Ideal," "The Body and the Machine," and "The Medium and the Message," such sharp-eyed commentators as philosopher Michael Heim, literary critic N. Katherine Hayles, and new-media auteur Florian Brody grapple with the complicated give and take implied in those opposing terms. They use it to elucidate the pros and cons of cybernetics, Net porn, Neo-Luddism, hypertext, and a host of other ripe cybercultural phenomena. The parts of this book don't necessarily add up to a coherent sum, but their shared commitment to living with the dialectic--i.e., to eschewing the one-sidedness of both utopian and dystopian visions of the digital--sets an invaluable tone. --Julian Dibbell
Book Description
The Digital Dialectic is an interdisciplinary jam session about our visual and intellectual cultures as the computer recodes technologies, media, and art forms. Unlike purely academic texts on new media, the book includes contributions by scholars, artists, and entrepreneurs, who combine theoretical investigations with hands-on analysis of the possibilities (and limitations) of new technology. The key concept is the digital dialectic: a method to ground the insights of theory in the constraints of practice. The essays move beyond journalistic reportage and hype into serious but accessible discussion of new technologies, new media, and new cultural forms.
Customer Reviews:
A more relevant anthology on computing and internet theory.......2005-03-24
Books about any medium written when the medium is new, tend to promise the moon with that medium, sing paeans, make doomsday predictions, believe that utopia is just round the corner. In one manner or other the urge to be the prophet overtakes the urge to be an analyst. This also plagues many books about comptuers and internet.
This anthology does not break free from prophesy-mania completely, but many of the contributors like Michael Heim, Katherine Hayles, et al., are far wiser.
This book delights the reader by beautifully exploring the meaning of hypertext, meaning of being in a digital world, human reactions to technology etc., without falling back to commonplace platitudes.
This makes the book stand-out from the deluge of books in the 1990s which sung paeans to virtual communities, borderless worlds, MUDs, MOOs, cyborgs, end of money, end of copyright, death of distance and other 'social science fiction' fantasies.
Best techno thinking material........2002-01-01
~That does not means it is correct. – I know, I know, by using~{!0~}correct~{!1~}, it shows I'm not dialectically sophisticated enough. However, that is my point: those material force you to think, and force you to justify your logic/thinking as an everyday techie. For example, the ~{!0~}information~{!1~} view of genetics. It is totally justifiable ("justfiable", another sin like "correct"): information is used because the DNA code is perfectly comparable with computer code.~~ However, why computer code is ~{!0~}information~{!1~}? – because it is ~{!0~}form~{!1~} related. Why ~{!0~}form~{!1~}? because it is related with the application of math. In general, the prestige or bias for ~{!0~}information~{!1~} is from the mathematic-based exact science.
The premises or hidden background of ~{!0~}dialectics~{!1~} is somewhat cynical sociological-philosophical interpretation of concepts. I believe it is an antidote for techies – even it simply means you have~~ to put some thinking on it.
I love it, because it force me to prove it is incorrect!~
Fantastic Anthology.......2000-12-23
The title of this collection gives a clue of what the reader is headed for - the term "dialectic" is most often connected with philosophical ponderings or Marxist manifestos - this is not just another puff piece exhorting the brave new world and global village of interconnectiveness, this is a series of eleven well written essays delving into New Media Theory.
Grouped into four sections: "The Real and the Ideal", "The Body and the Machine", "The Medium and the Message", and "The World and the Screen", this collection explores the new way of being and thinking that digital technology elicits. An important work that refuses to slip into pedanticism; thought provoking and entertaining. A must read for anyone who wants to be a subject rather than an object in the Information Age.

Fantastic reference book.......1999-05-14
M.P.Slayton's collection of patterns and tips in her EARLY AMERICAN DECORATING TECHNIQUES publication is a "must" for anyone who enjoys creating and painting in this style. With the instructions and color illustrations of this book, it would be possible to become self-taught in freehand bronze, theorem and other forms of stenciling. Tinsel painting (or reverse painting on glass) is covered as well as techniques in gold leaf. Slayton begins her book with the basics of strokework and walks you through to the finishing steps of varnishing and handrubbing. The book is divided into 3 sections. While the first 2 concentrate on technique, the last section (approx. 100 pgs) contains numerous full-size patterns of Early American designs.Decorative painters need more resource and referral books such as this one!

A relatively decent study guide to prepare for the CCSP tests........2007-05-03
This was one of the books I used to prepare for my CCIE Security written. In the last week leading to the test, I used the flash cards and practice tests to assess topics that I needed to focus on. While this book is focused on the CCSP certification, I felt that topics common to both certifications would help me in my preparation. And it did.
This book covers the 5 exams of the CCSP certification and includes focused points on securing networks, securing routers & switches, IPS, VPN's and Cisco PIX's. Starting with flash cards, prompting the user to pick the right answer, the authors then have detailed sections on relevant topics. A quick read and useful to a prospective CCSP candidate.
Good for reviewing on your exams.......2006-07-10
I used the book for preparing for some of the CCSP exams and it made a very nice job refreshing the concepts and clarifying some key information. I did good thank to it on the SNRS and SNPA exams, soon will be sitting IPS and I don't think it will dissapoint me this time.
Great CCSP security curriculum overview.......2006-01-14
My expectations were exceeded with this book. Each section covers one of the CCSP exams. Quick reference sheets are like the "cliff notes" of the entire class so if you have taken the class or have good experience, its a quick review of what's important. This book can be used as a study reference OR as a technical reference.
Pricey but good.......2006-01-05
Maybe it is just me but I was kinda expecting something I could rip out of book on heavy card stock to use as flash cards. While the information is presented in the book in the form of flash cards, you're still supposed to do the Q&A in the book itself as there is no perforations and the pages won't last long if you cut them up yourself. Other than that, the material is good and should work well to prep you for the exams.
