Great place to start.......2002-04-16
Peterson's "Job Opportunities in Engineering and Computer Science" is a great book to find engineering company overviews. It list opportunities in architecture, biotechnology, computer programming, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and technology. Be sure you have loads of time to wade through the all the information. It lists a fairly detailed description, the company website, human resources manager, telephone and fax number, company size, location, type, top competitors, and more.
If you are about to graduate to looking for a new job, this is a great place to start your search.
Peterson's Engineer and Computer Science Careers.......2000-04-05
This book gives people interested in Computer Science and Engineering a relatively comprehensive look at the various career options available to them. It discusses the educational requirements necessary for various positions, the starting salary of the positions and a short description of the work that would be performed. The only thing I found lacking in this book was the amount of information given regarding the specific job. I would have preferred more detail when describing the actual tasks of each position. Otherwise, I found the book quite helpful and I feel it painted a realistic portrait of most entry level positions available for engineers and computer science majors.

Book Description
These are limericks with a back story - in fact, a back-of-the-aerogramme story - written in collaboration, line by line, by two friends who live halfway across the world from each other. Floating anglers, cowardly knights and a football-playing prime minister join forces with a host of eccentrics in this hilarious medley.

Customer Reviews:
Not perfect, but a great read for any Beatles fan.......2007-04-07
Essentially this was a great book until I reached the latter part. The first 3/4ths were highly entertaining and kept me hooked. Bramwell relates stories that I personally had never heard before; stories that could only be told by someone who knew the members of the Beatles so intimately. Despite this I felt that Ringo and George could have been mentioned a bit more throughout. Additionally I thought that the last quarter of the book dragged a bit more than the beginning. Personally I had no problem with Bramwell's perceptions of Yoko. It was based on his experiences and how he interpreted the events that occurred. Can't quite fault the man for that.
I think that almost every Beatles fan should read Magical Mystery Tours. It's really quite the read.
Top Three Beatles Book.......2007-02-10
Fabulous insider's look at the real Fab Four, not the media myth. Bramwell was a Liverpool peer, grew up with these kids and started lugging their equipment when still wet behind the ears. He saw it all, from the creation. Superbly evocative writing recreates 60s scenes as though they happened yesterday. Sure, I wondered how Bramwell could recite 40-year-old dialogue from memory. It's probably made up, but as a memoir, it's his best memory of who said and did what. He sears Yoko and claims Lennon may have been about to leave her when he died. Details inside this can't-put-down book eclipse most of the rival volumes like Bob Spitz's recent history.
I loved the behind-doors details in this book!.......2006-08-12
Tony Bramwell wrote a marvelous book, sparing no detail on his decades long friendship with the Beatles. Hundreds and possibly thousands of books have been written over the years, but Tony related intimate details that I've never heard elsewhere, such as when was the exact moment Paul and Linda fell in love, and what was going on outside the recording studio that made George so crazy. (Answer to #1, during one of Paul's visits to Beverly Hills, and answer to #2, Pattie was clubbing till all hours while George was on the phone begging her to go home.) It's these details and many many more that give Tony's book a place on every Beatles' lover's book shelf. Well done!
Interesting but flawed.......2006-08-03
A chatty book. The focus in the first half seems to me to be on Brian Epstein and his long slide towards an early death from nervous and physical exhaustian and, of course, drug use. The second half of the book is by and large dedicated to showing what a monster Yoko Ono was with absolutely no attempt at portraying her with any sense of balance and often becomes tiresome. Allen Klein (deservedly?) is also skewered. John's character descends into some sort of hopelessly naive, drug and love addled lunatic who has been 'hynotized' by the dastardly Ono. The book portrays Paul (and later, Linda) far and away in the most positive light. Ringo is rarely mentioned and George doesn't fare much better. That said, Bramwell does give the reader a good taste of what the early to late '60s were like. His depiction of the early years of the Beatles' career is usually amusingly gossipy, mildly informative and generally entertaining. I'd recommend the book though this is certainly not an essential work as far as the Beatles go. Geoff Emerick's new book is far more noteworthy.
One of the best Beatle memoirs.......2006-07-03
Bramwell's Beatle memoir is detailed, more or less accurate, and often humorous. What else do you need?
Book Description
The silvery clip of scissors. The scent of talcum and tonic. The game blaring on the radio. The lazy rhythms of friendly conversation. In Do Bald Men Get Half-Price Haircuts? Vince Staten perfectly captures the atmosphere of the classic barbershop and the special place it holds in the hearts of American men.
Staten visited more than three hundred barbershops, in towns ranging from Chowchilla, California, to Mount Airy, North Carolina. Displaying a great ear for dialogue, he re-creates the banter in a family-run Italian shop in Louisville, the relaxed jokes shared at an African-American barber's in a quiet neighborhood in Nashville, and the familiar conversations about local politics, the new baseball coach, and the meaning of life that make it clear why the barbershop is the communications hub of so many communities. In a wonderfully entertaining exploration of the history, secrets, and social contributions of barbershop culture, he provides answers to such pressing questions as: What's in those hair tonics anyway? Why are the stripes on the barber pole red and white? Why not a barbershop trio?
As in his earlier fascinating tours through the hardware store and the phar-macy, Staten combines a highly original sense of humor with a keen eye for telling detail. With Do Bald Men Get Half-Price Haircuts? he treats readers to an unusual, warmly nostalgic, and often hilarious tour of an enduring corner of American popular culture.
Customer Reviews:
A fun read, but has shortcomings.......2005-06-01
This book is an entertaining read. Vince Staten says he visited over 300 barber shops all over the country while researching this book. It would have been nice if he included a few more of them in this book. I am left wondering, why travel all over the country to visit over 300 hundred barber shops, and then include only a handful of them in the book? The sub-title, "In search of America's Great Barber Shops" is a little misleading. The book is more of a history of the barber trade than it is a quest to find great barber shops. Staten relies heavily on a 1904 book on the history of barbering and a 1950's barber college textbook as his sources. Staten tries his hand at inventing new words: he says barbers are "talky." Don't you mean "talkative," Vince? One of my chief complaints about this book is that, like other Staten books, it does not contain a bibliography. Staten cites his sources in the text, but when relying so heavily on material published by others, a bibliography would be nice. For any guy who grew up before haircutting chains like Fantastic Sam's, Great Clips, and Super Cuts set up shop in strip shopping centers everywhere, the once-ubiquitous barber pole inspires nostalgia. It still means that inside, you will find a guy named Bob, Bill, or Jimmy holding court with men of all stripes: loafers, businessmen, blue collar workers, and boys. There is a whole lot of trash talk, and a little bit of haircutting. Most of us remember a place like that, and Staten captures some, but not all, of it here. For that reason, it is worth the ride.
Great subject, superficial treatment.......2003-07-03
I suppose this book might be ok if the reader knows beforehand not to expect a serious work. The level of writing is about what one would find in one of those Sunday supplement feature articles. In fact, the book gives the impression of being a collection of such features. Some of the chapters repeat nearly word-for-word things that have already been said in other chapters, such as the anecdote about the ruler Hadrian. The book is a combination memoir/essay/comedy script, not a serious history. Most of the jokes are incredibly bad, and I don't mean the barber jokes, but the lame ones the author attempts. Many things about the book are annoying. The font is huge, almost the size of large-print text, which means you are actually not getting 176 pages. There are several typos, such as a period instead of a comma in the middle of a sentence, and using the article "a" when "an" is called for. The chapter promising to explain the origin of the barbershop quartet is clear as mud. On the positive side, the discussion of the origin of the barber pole and Bill Marvy's role in manufacturing the poles is good. Also I sympathize with the author's lament over the decline of traditional barber shops. But the book simply disappoints and is not worth the cover price. Borrow it, or get it used if you still want to read it.
Disappointed - not what i wanted or expected........2002-08-28
although the book is well written and interesting reading, it is not at all what i wanted or expected. i am looking for a serious reference book which provides names, addresses, phone numbers, and ratings of the top barbers in the country. in fact, the subtitle of the book, which i feel is very misleading, is "in search of america's great barbershops". what search? i expected several hundred listings of barbers from across the usa. Instead, this book is a mishmash of history, haircutting and shaving techniques, and barber jokes, and i think it's aimed mostly at barbers themselves, rather than the public at large. it features barbers the author has visited personally, but it doesn't provide the pertinent information necessary to locate them. like most people, i've been the victim of many a bad haircut in my day, and i would like to find a simple, no nonsense directory of top rated barbers across the country.
Tonic for the soul as well as the hair.......2001-08-16
I saw this book discussed on the Today Show, where Matt Lauer spent several minutes reminiscing with Vince Staten about boyhood experiences at the barbershop. Then I heard another feature about the book on NPR. So I figured either the author had a really good PR person, or the book was interesting. Fortunately, it's the latter.
The nostalgia aspect of the book is certainly the part that will strike closest to home for most male readers - the way the shop smelled (like Lucky Tiger), the joy of reading a million comic books (not to mention Argosy), the feeling of manhood on the day when the barber finally let you sit in the chair without the extra board that raised a small boy to a reasonable cutting height.
But that only takes you back 10 or 20 or 50 years. In other parts of the book, Staten time-travels to ancient Egypt and Greece to unearth the beginnings of the barbering trade. In the present day, we get to hear the story direct from the mouths of some of the few hundred barbers Staten met while researching the book, and they're the best part. Because the community of the barbershop naturally reflects the personality of the barber.
It's a little sad, too. While you get the feeling that the emotional pull of the barbershop will keep the institution from completely disappearing - that it provides something all men need (the way the "beauty parlor" did/does for women) - the future doesn't look all that bright for barbering.
As in some of his other books, Staten has given us a strong sense of something lost, or at least something we're losing. But his delight and amazement in the sensual pleasure of the perfect barbershop shave makes even a bearded guy like me almost ready to settle into that red leather chair and luxuriate in that hot towel wrapped around my face. Almost.
It's fun.
Nostalgia, History, and Good Conversation!.......2001-07-24
Before reviewing this book, I would like to pay homage to a very special man who has been cutting my hair since 1965, Mr. Michael Cogliandro. As much as I love his hair cuts, I love talking to him even more. He has taught me a great deal. Over the years, I have learned that many Nobel prize winners, politicians, judges, and professors regularly seek out his advice as well, along with their hair cuts. I feel honored to have been in his chair!
Mr. Staten understands what a barber shop is all about. It's a place to congregate for good company and good conversation. The book captures that element very nicely. In so doing, it provided a lot of nostalgic memories of good times I have had in barber shops, both before and after Mr. Cogliandro began cutting my hair.
To write this book, Mr. Staten did a lot of research. He visited over 300 barber shops (not salons for hair styling). He often got a hair cut (although as a balding person this was potentially dangerous), a shave, or just sat in for the conversation.
He also did a lot of historical research into the history of barbering, the barber's pole, and the role of barbers as surgeons and blood-letters.
Mr. Staten also taught me more than I ever thought I could ever know about hair tonics and the scents they carry.
He does a nice job of capturing special moments like a first hair cut (Mr. Cogliandro gave both of my sons their first haircuts), when you don't need to sit on the board any more, and when the barber first starts joking with you.
Alas, the barber shop is in decline. Although many people originally blamed the hippies, the barbers agree that it was really the Beatles who did them in. The numbers of shops and barbers are dropping, and many barbers are now retiring. The book does a nice job of explaining how uprooting this can be . . . to have to search out a new barber and a new shop.
He also located some terrific shops for you to visit including Three Brothers Barbershop in Stamford, Connecticut; Vernon Winfrey's Barbershop in Nashville, Tennessee (that Oprah's Dad); and Hugh Sample's Barbershop in Boomer, West Virginia.
Of course, he also talks about the most famous barbers of all time, such as Floyd on Mayberry R.F.D., Figaro, Sweeney Todd, and Sal "the barber" Maglie.
For men, this book will be a ball.
For women, it will be an eye-opener. Now you'll know why men like barber shops!
After you finish reading this book, why don't you take a stroll down to your barber shop and discuss what you learned in this book?
"You're Next!"

Customer Reviews:
That's all what i need........2006-10-25
This volume is very explicative and not lost any details of his points. All the volumes makes a great help, and even a single powerfull source of information, to anyone who want to make the finest traditional bows, i recomend !
Consise and informative.......2005-11-04
The Traditional Bowyer's Bible Vol. 1
by Numerous contributors
A collection of craftsmen come together to demonstrate the building and dynamics of different woods into different types of bows. There are three books in the series Vols.: l, ll and lll they cover all aspects of wooden archery equipment from yew bows to flint arrow tips. Flat bows, decorations, strings and quivers etc. Fine archery to primitive.
The Boyers Bibles series.......2005-09-02
If you are interested in crafting bows, these are the best books you can buy.
As it says on the cover.......2005-08-31
this book is vital to anyone wanting to make a traditional bow!
as it says on the cover"bowyers bible" started 2nd book already and cut myself some bowstaves too.
Only quible is that as an englishman who was born in portsmouth, one of the writers thought the mary rose sank near plymouth!?!?!
(it was portsmouth)but that has nothing to do with the bow making which is clear and concise. a must have book to go with my Hodgkins "archers craft"
necessary for beginning bowyers.......2005-07-03
this book is essential for anyone who wants to make archery tackle out of natural materials. i still go to school and archery has taken hold of my interest. i spent hours on the computer scraping bits of information until i came upon this book online. after reading it through, all my problems were solved. this book has all the basics. from wood choosing to laying out your bow to designing practical bows from all kinds of woods. however, if you are in an area that has plenty of trees but are forbidden to cut it, then you are probably stuck with making board bows (which are cheap at 3.50 for an 11 ft piece) and for more info on board bows, then the 2nd vol. of this series is probably the best.
this book is a very good book for bowyers and got me started and i am still hooked (a year and three broken bows after. apparently the average bowmaker breaks 12 bows before making a good one :)

Customer Reviews:
Good book - a bit techie.......2006-12-31
good book - it was a touch too technical for me. But I learned a good amount - if you have more computer experience - its a great read
Already out of date, but still worth the read.......2006-11-19
Although I really enjoy this book, it's too bad that it's already out of date (as mentioned in other reviews).
As someone with very little previous experience with JavaScript, I found this book to be really helpful it describing how to make stuff happen. I personally have found the Google Maps API Documentation to be far too terse and difficult to figure out; kinda like reading a dictionary to learn how to write.
This book takes the simplistic Google examples and builds on to them to give you a better idea of how you might actually build an application.
True, "Hacking Google Maps" might not be the best title for the book ("Introduction to Google Maps" might be more appropriate) but it was a very well written and useful book for getting my own Google Maps mash-up going.
Organized, clearly written, but misleading title.......2006-08-31
While I enjoyed the author's clear writing style, and I was pleased to see that the level of detail and explanation given in each chapter is consistent, I did not find the book's content to be particularly valuable.
The book is organized very well, and it reads like a Google Maps tutorial, rather than a hacks book. The flow from chapter to chapter is similar to the Maps API online documentation, which makes following along with Google's documentation a breeze while reading the book.
The first 100 pages were introductory, describing Google Local, the Maps API, ways to store and share information, and so on in very general terms. This puts all users on equal footing, but it seemed odd to see so much basic information in a book about hacking Google Maps.
One thing that shocked me, especially given the approach taken in the first 100 pages, was to see all of the examples written in Perl. If the introductory lessons are needed by anyone, chances are that programming / scripting is new to him/her, and I don't see Perl as the appropriate language to learn at that point.
Version 1 of the API is used throughout the book, but version 2 was released in April 2006. Version 2 is largely backwards compatible, but Google has asked everyone to move to version 2, saying that v1 support can be turned off at any point. This doesn't take away from the value of the lessons, but it does add some overhead. I consulted Google's documentation and adjusted all of the books examples for the api changes as I read.
Another thing that particularly surprised me was the mention of using scraping techniques to extract geocoding data, without mentioning the drawbacks to doing so. Personally, I avoid scraping like the plague. There's no better way to break an app than to scrape its data. Geocoding is part of the v2 api, btw.
To summarize, the book is a clearly laid out introduction to using the Google Maps API, and it is written well, but I wouldn't recommend it to a friend. For an introduction to maps, I would consult Google's much-improved online documentation, and O'Reilly's "Google Maps Hacks" is a better read for what I would consider hacks (also written to api v1).
Faltou profundidade nas infromações.......2006-08-25
Muitas dicas interessante, mas sem profundidade. Livro interessante para iniciantes, mas fraco para quem já conhece os recuros. Faltou também informação sobre o Google Earth.
Limited info on Google Earth.......2006-08-11
If you are primarily interested in Google Earth, use Web based resources. Material on Google Earth is limited and appears to be appended to a book written on Google Maps.
