Understanding FACTS.......2006-11-10
A good general overview of the role of FACTS devices and their capabilities. This book is sure to become a classic reference book as the technology develops over the next few years, primarily because it is authored by the original developer of FACTS devices - Dr Hingorani. The technical content is acessable to both undergraduates and practicing engineers.

Book Description
In this work, Balkin examines whether low-income people should be encouraged to engage in self-employment as a route for economic improvement. The author has gathered ideas and material from a diverse literature and experience base to provide practical suggestions for those who operate self-employment programs, fund self-employment programs, consider policy concerning self-employment, and look for alternative strategies to alleviate poverty, create jobs, and improve economic development. Among the questions Balkin explores are the reasons self-employment is a significant and successful alternative in some ethnic groups but has not been in others, why it is successful in those groups, and whether and how it could become a viable option. Balkin examines the various studies of groups in the U.S. such as the Amish, the Gypsies, and the Koreans, who have tended toward self-employment, using it as a successful mode of economic activity. He explores the cultural backgrounds, forces, and networks that contributed to their success in order to identify the factors most likely to predict the effectiveness of future self-employment efforts and programs. He also analyzes low-income groups where self-employment is relatively rare, suggesting policies and approaches which might be taken to encourage successful self-employment among these groups. Balkin looks at programs in the United States, Europe, and the Third World, which have assisted the self-employed and recommends ways in which policies might be implemented to help U.S. low-income workers undertake successful self-employment. Finally, estimates of the job creation potential for self-employment programs are provided along with a discussion about the importance of evaluation.

Whew. Just when the religious right and alarmist left were closing in ever so smugly with an overload of everything--and they do mean everything--gives you cancer, makes you fat or is immoral, David Shaw rescues us with a well-researched defense of pleasurable activities. As Shaw, the media critic for The Los Angeles Times, quotes a sociologist friend, "Don't people realize every scientific study shows that the single best thing you can do for your health is have fun?" Apparently not, as Shaw points out with an investigation into our Puritanical past, the excesses of the 1960s and the contradictions of living in fear during our current improved standard of living. The bottom line? Relax and enjoy.
Book Description
The reading public seems to have an insatiable appetite for books pointing out the annoying and infuriating in American life--from The Death of Common Sense to In Defense of Elitism to I'm Dysfunctional, You're Dysfunctional. The Pleasure Police, David Shaw's wickedly gleeful defense of good sex, good booze, good food and a good cigar, should hit the same nerve.
Why, Shaw wonders, are so many people hell-bent on ruining the pleasures of everyone else? The religious right thunders on about what consenting adults do in the bedroom; the feminist left wants to make flirtation a crime; hysterical health advocates warn against eating anything except tofu and kale; a tidal wave of repressive antismoking laws is passed based on extremely dubious secondhand smoke research; charlatan diet gurus use guilt and quackery to create a forty-billion-dollar-a-year industry; total strangers feel free to comment on the alcohol content of their fellow diners' beverages.
Shaw takes after these zealots with gusto, wit, and just the right bit of malice. In his view life is a feast, not an endurance test, and he takes great glee in mocking out the absurdity and self-righteousness of the crusades of the pleasure police.
The Pleasure Police is the book to be read while sipping an icy cold martini.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoy yourself - you actually might live longer........1996-08-07
This is a nice bit of naughtiness in an otherwise oh so
politically correct world. Shaw shows us that most of what
we are taught to be afraid of, in most cases won't hurt us
at all. There is a good bit of science to the book, but
what carries you along is the daring attitude that life is
to be enjoyed, not just prolonged. It's time somebody said
all this, and David Shaw says it all clearly, succinctly,
and with no small amount of common sense.
Go ahead, live a little, read The Pleasure Police, and then
don't ever worry about them again.

Book Description
A method book for the development of complete independence on the drum set.
Customer Reviews:
Couldn't get into it.......2007-05-13
I expected something different from this. I'll say up front that I'm a novice/hobbyist drummer. Having said that, the exercises here are just painful. I didn't find any particular rhythm to them, it just seemed to treat the drummer like a machine required to play right-hand, left-hand, right-foot, left-foot (assigned to no particular drum or cymbal/HH) at prescribed times. I'm impressed if you can do this, but it really helps me if the exercises sound like something in addition to building up skill.
Good but can be better.......2007-05-07
This is a really good book to train your brain to control your hands and limbs to move separately. But it will be helpful if there's an audio CD that comes with it.
Great Study!.......2007-05-07
This book holds many challenging exercises. You first look at some of them and think "It can't be that hard." Then you try them and it is not so easy. Definately a great way to challenge your coordination and make it stronger!
Not really a review -- an explaination..........2007-01-10
Most reviews touch on what this book is about, I just want to add what you get
when you get it. Endless permutations of rhythms that break the
standard mold of a "normal" drummer. Forget snare on 2&4 or straight eights
on a hi-hat. The books seeks to break you down from the "normal" rhythms
of the kit and to enable you to hit linearly -- any joint at any time in any
order at any point on the kit.
But...
You don't need a drumset to work it -- all you need are hands and feet to
get better. the "score" is set out in various patterns of LH,RH, LF, RF
(left hand, right hand, left foot, right foot). So if you can't get
enough of drumming, take this on the road with you for vacations, work
trips, whatever and work on breaking the mold. The floor, your knees
and any flat surface in front of you will do for practice.
This is one of the few drum books you can literally practice from
anywhere at anytime with nothing but the book and you.
4 Way Jazz Independence: The Lost Art.......2006-10-04
Having a book like 4-Way Coordination will do nothing for you, unless of course you are willing to invest the time toward mastering each excercise contained within.
It would be impossible to speculate just how far you could go, but your playing will improve exponentially once you have mastered the incredible musicality this book offers!
To effectively and indelibly burn the contents of this book into your musical vocabulary, you would need to spend considerable time playing each bar at 35 mm on the metronome ad infinitum. Then take it up from there!
Rumour has it that this book was the main focus Tony Williams used to develope his incredible playing. Rumour also has it that Tony could effortlessly play each excercise at the highest metronome settings.
One could spend a lifetime working toward discovering every permutation and combination this book offers!
This book is a definite "must have!" Buy it now!

Unlike Seventeen magazine, which soothingly encouraged teenage girls to fixate on zits and the raging controversy over eye shadow versus eye color, 16 focused entirely on the raison d'être for Seventeen's fixation: boys. Here to fan memory's flames is the magazine's 40th-anniversary collection that culls the photos of and interviews with those smooth-chested, coifed teen idols from its first issue in May 1957, which featured Elvis as its cover boy, as well as the bad-boy, shaggy-haired groups of later issues.
Gloria Stavers, the personality behind the magazine, discovered a whole new audience in teenage girls. Their fan mail to 16 reminded her that when she was a teen, "the color of his eyes, the color of his hair--what adults would call 'dumb little things'" were all that mattered. She took that wide-eyed, breathless, adoring tone in her interviews with the teen idols that gave the magazine its flavor.
Who's Your Fave Rave? proves, in a way, that you can go home again, if just to marvel at the passions that pompadours unleashed in the early '60s, the hysteria induced by '70s hippies, or the euphoria that the feathered bangs of early '80s hunks inspired. This scrapbook--its grainy, cheap papery feel intact--will carry you back to the acne innocence of days gone by.
Customer Reviews:
For all the "little girls she understood"...16 and Gloria Stavers legacy.......2006-10-27
My only complaint about the book? the price!!! I can remember buying the REAL 16 Magazine for less than a dollar. I, just like millions of pre-teens of the 60s and 70s made sure we spent our hard earned babysitting money on 16 so we could feel close to our "faves."
It was fun reading about the various teen idols and teen idol wannabees from over the years, but I really wished that Randi and Danny had given us more info on the late Gloria Stavers in her book. It's really too bad she doesn't get the proper credit she should get for being rock and roll's FIRST woman journalist. Indeed, I would say that Ms. Stavers was probably one of the most hardworking but underrated persons in her profession, and apparently for years she was referred to derisively as "Mother Superior of the Inferior." How wrong the detractors were!
Gloria was amazing in the sense that she was a trailblazer when it came to celebrity journalism: she did not possess a journalism degree, but yet she had unprecedented access to the big stars of her day. She wielded a considerable amount of influence for a woman of that time. It's said that between she and Dick Clark, they could make or break an aspiring teen idol.
If you ask me, Gloria should be nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for her contribution to rock and roll journalism. It was Gloria with her "40 intimate questions" who set the pace for the way news about celebrities is reported. She made the stars approachable to the average person. Gloria Stavers was far more important in the lives of the nations pre-teenagers than one realizes. Not only was she the one giving us the "scoop" on our favorite stars, she made us feel she really understood what we were going through in our everyday lives...and while she feed us fuel for fantasy, she also was opening doors to places most young girls wouldn't have even considered venturing into, and subtly telling us how to make our dreams to "be somebody" a reality. Granted the pages of 16 were free from controversy, but it didn't mean she wasn't a rebel of sorts. While others talked of feminism and being "new women"...she didn't mention that in her pages. No, apparently she was too busy "walking the walk."
As silly as it sounds now, 16 Magazine was my "salvation" Looking back, I feel the most important lesson 16 Magazine taught me that my feeling are important, my likes aren't silly, my goals are valid and that I shouldn't just settle for a mundane life. It helped me to become the strong and well rounded woman I am today. Far too often the messages adults gave us girls was "you can't" "you shouldn't" or "you'll never make it." Yet, Gloria in her pages, gave girls the message "you can"...whether that "can" met meeting Davey Jones, Rick Springfield(or whomever tripped your trigger) or just deciding to make another dream come true.
"It's like trying to tell a stranger 'bout rock and roll!".......2005-12-06
If you're a woman (or a man) of a "certain age" you might just GET this book. But, if you don't... If you NEVER envied Gloria Stavers when you were a kid, and you NEVER actually wanted to really get to know not just Herman, but alllll the HERMITS, and not just wanted but NEEDED to know everything about Freddy AND alllllll the Dreamers...this book is definitely NOT FOR YOU. But if you did all those mysterious things, then get out your credit card NOW and get this book, 'cause, girlfriend -- it's CALLING YOUR NAME!
A teenybopper's dream come true!.......2000-07-08
I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this book, so I was surprised and delighted to find that the book not only contained the story of Gloria Stavers and 16 magazine, but also featured reprints of actual pages from the magazine going back to 1950s. I was a reader of 16 magazine during the heyday of the Monkees, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and Bobby Sherman, so it was a real treat to see old articles about my favorites, but it also was fascinating to see how the magazine covered other teen idols over the years, from Ricky Nelson and Frankie Avalon to David Cassidy and John Travolta. Best of all, the authors include new interviews with many of the performers who had been prominently featured in the magazine, so the reader learns what the teen idol experience was like from the other side. And it's always nice to find out what your "fave raves" are up to today. My only complaint is that the book wasn't long enough. I wish that additional space had been available to print more old articles from 16 magazine, rather than just one or two about each featured performer. I understand that a second volume will focus on the late 1970s and the 1980s, but I hope that the authors will consider another volume of treasures from the '60s and '70s. All in all, this book is a wonderful trip down memory lane for all of us who grew up in the golden age of pop music.
Gotta have it!.......2000-02-25
Superbly packaged. Grouped by decade, teen idols reflect on their experience and have their memories punctuated by reprints of the articles most emblematic of their experiences. So many memories....Credit was also finally given to Gloria Stavers, who sheparded so many of us through pre-teenhood. Totally respectful of the teenboppers who saved their babysitting money so they could buy the magazine or send in for the contests. I'm hoping this is one of a series!
Retro Fun!.......1999-08-18
I love this book, but I can't wait for the second volume when they go back to the 80s yeah, a great decade teen idols like Corey Hart, Paul Young, former Baby John Waite, a very young Madonna and loads more. Randi, you're the greatest you made my life great when I purchased the book two years ago Istill love this book Peace & Love Rosie from Brooklyn, NY
Customer Reviews:
Master that doesnt know e4 lines?.......2005-08-16
I had to write a review of this book after reading another reviewer who gave it stars. For the most part, Ward covers all possible move orders, not ducking giving his opinion about which lines lead to advantage and which dont. A lot of chess books these days are written without making any firm statements, this book is not one of them.
One statement the author makes, that was reviewed as being bunk is that 3.e4 is the real test to the QGA. Whether or not you share that opinion it doesnt really matter(i happen to also) the point is that he at least makes an opinion and tries to back it up with analysis.
Unfortunetly the bar is fairly low right now for chess books, so even though this book is far from perfect, it is better than many other books. For the next edition I would like to see more variations, alternative opinions from other sources, and incorporate some computer engine analysis. Think John Nunn, or John Watsons books. But as I said, besides that, its a good book, and so much as I can tell, has accurate analysis
Some lines good, others spotty .......2005-08-11
(My rating would be two-and-a-half stars if that were possible.)
I'm a master who's played the QGA on and off for about 20 years. My other reference works were getting old, so I got a copy of Ward's book. The parts I've read so far have disappointed me.
He spends a bit more than 1/3 of the pages on the 3.e4 lines, writing, "If the QGA is to be refuted, then 3 e4 is probably the place for White players to look." This statement is puzzling. He's implying that there could be a _refutation_ to the QGA (an eye-opening claim), and he says nothing of the likelihood that White can get an _advantage_ in this line, rather than in other lines (a more useful consideration).
I don't know the e4 lines well, but I'm familiar with other QGA lines. He skips over some significant variations in those. Two examples:
A) In the line 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bg4 5.Bxc4 e6, he doesn't analyze a common Black setup built around the moves a6, Nc6, and Bd6. [In a note -- not his regular analysis -- he mentions one game that began that way, in which White played weirdly and got into trouble.]
B) In the line 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3, he never mentions one of Black's sensible responses, 4. ... Nc6, which has been played many times.
Skipping lines such as these would make sense if this were a repertoire book, advising the Black player to choose certain variations. But it's not; it's a survey of the entire opening. Of course, you can never include every little subvariation of an opening, but the two I mentioned are hardly obscure.
Ward does a nice job of describing some positional ideas in his analysis (rather than just complex variations). However, as he analyzes games, he focuses much more on the moves actually played than on possibly superior alternatives, which he either omits or glosses over.
This book could also have used better editing and proofreading. A few examples:
1. Page 91: "The queen had look after the knight."
2. Page 100: a note mentions the move h5 for Black, but it should have been Bh5.
3. Page 103: a note says "As we shall see elsewhere," referring to something that happens in other games, but we are not told where to find those games.
4. Page 154: the text reads "It's inconceivable" when it clearly should have said "It's conceivable."
A book by a grandmaster on an important opening raises the reader's hopes -- too much so in this case. If I were a specialist in 3.e4, I might have a much better view of this book. From my perspective, though, it merits no more than a lukewarm recommendation.
Chris Ward: As good as usual.......2002-07-19
This book, like all Mr.Ward's books, is filled with generous texts and explanations joined to only the best players games.
He admits giving more space to the variations with an early e2-e4 because he thinks it is the only real way to test Black's choice of opening. In this sens, probably the more positional players could be more attracted by other books on this system.
I have seen on Amazon.com at least one book that puts more emphasis on the early Nf3 variations.
A book that fits the needs of those who wish to understand the basic and more on the Queen's Gambit Accepted.

Missed it by a mile........2006-01-30
I am now graduating from school and looking back at this class, this book, I do not agree with it at all. Hopefully your instructor will not use this book.
Nice Book, cool content :).......2005-04-13
This book is ok if you need a view at a glance. I found this book in http://www.helpdesksite.us and I am happy with the purchase.
If you run a helpdesk then you need this for your employees........2003-11-22
One of the hardest things to learn in the IT industry is how to deal with customers. Learning good skills is often an ongoing process. Learning how to communicate ideas and concepts can often be very difficult.
Having run 2 help desks I know that good agents are hard to find. Susan Sanderson has put together one of the few book on help desk that take it from the beginning and give you information that will help in everyday life. I have already found several things in here that I can use in the classes I teach as well as the customers I visit.
There are 10 chapters and each one builds on each other. You have practice labs and even review questions. This book can be used as a self paced course or in the formal classroom setting.
One of the things I liked best was the cd that is included; this cd has Help Desk Software included for practice. The big plus of the cd is the sample recording of actual calls so that you can hear what the customers is saying and learn several techniques for communicating and listening.
Overall this book is very helpful and seems to have just about everything included.
Good Content and Relevant Information.......2003-10-21
I'm in the process of setting up a 10 person help desk. I found this book thorough and comperehensive in introducing me to many of the concepts required to plan, set up, and run a help desk. The enclosed software (HelpSTAR) and exercises as well as help desk simulation are well thought out.
The book is positioned as a college-level text, but I found it practical for my own self learning.
Practical Help Desk implementation.......2003-10-15
This Book is ideally suited to those looking for guidance on the concepts and skills required for the setup and implementation of a World Class Help Desk.
Along the way, you get in-depth analysis and exercises, giving you a balanced insight into the way a Help Desk should be set up, and operated, providing both the End-Users, and Employees of the Help Desk with the best of both worlds.
Also, there are numerous examples of ways to both run the help desk itself, and the management of it's personnel, but particularly useful are the audio examples of a number of typical situations the Help Desk Staff can find themselves dealing with.
The book wraps up with a useful simulation including help desk software to give you hands-on practice in solving problems.
