Customer Reviews:
an informative piece of work........1999-03-30
this book appears to be simple and easy to understand. it is of great help to people who wish to find out about these certain paradise jobs. However I think you should consider more graphics and maybe cover a wider range of career opportunities. Nevertheless a great effort.
Great book, but PLEASE update it!.......1999-02-19
We get a lot of requests for this book in the library here in West Yellowstone, Montana. Many of the locations that qualify as "paradise" are close by. However, I would like to ask the author to please consider updating this book, like one of these other reviewers has also requested.
Practical, entertaining and full of ideas!.......1999-01-20
Tons of information wrapped up in a few pounds of paper - a must read for all "young - at - heart" job seekers.
The perfect guide to dream jobs!.......1998-12-11
A great guide to cruise line, ski resort, national park, and resort hotel jobs around the world!
Great Information, but dated now........1998-10-07
This book is a great listing of jobs available all over the world. Maltzman even gives specifics like cost of lodging (if provided) and other things like airfare re-imbursement options, etc. Each listing has contact info and all you need to know to make a preliminary choice. It certainly shows you what is available and directs you to opportunities you might not ever have considered otherwise.
However, that said, the seasonal industry changes rapidly, and 1993 is a bit old now. But, most places will still be there around, with possible policy and HR personnell changes. So, plan ahead, allowing time to write and call to verify his info.

When Affirmative Action Was White: An Untold History of Racial Inequality in Twentieth-Century America
ASIN: 0198280165 |
Book Description
Segregation in Federal government agencies and programmes has been little appreciated as a key trait of American race relations in the decades before the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Federal government used its power to impose a segregated pattern of race relations among its employees and, through its programmes, upon the whole of American society well beyond the Mason-Dixon line. This pattern structured the relationship between ordinary black Americans and the US Federal government - whether as employees in government agencies, inmates, or officers in federal prisons, inductees in the Armed Services, consumers of federally guaranteed mortgages or job-seekers in United States Employment Service offices or visitors to National Parks in which the facilities were segregated (or in some cases, non-existent for Black American visitors). In all these instances, segregation did not imply separation simply but also profound inequality. Using extensive and original archival sources, King documents how instead of thwarting segregated race relations, the Federal government participated in their maintenance and diffusion. This is the book's first major theme, explored through detailed examination of Federal government departments and programmes. The book's second major theme is that segregated race relations resulted in intense inequality for Black Americans.

A Remarkable Tool for Musicians of All Levels.......2007-05-20
Many thanks to Ron Gorow for this book. Whether you're a beginning musician or a professional composer, there's a lifetime's worth of information and practical tips and exercises in this book. I'm a music teacher, musician and amateur composer. Studying this book has provided me with a wealth of compositional tools for my own musical pursuits, and has inspired me to give greater emphasis to transcription and composition in the curriculum I teach to K-3 elementary school children. In this book you'll find the practical and usable stuff the standard methodology books leave out. You'll learn about the harmonic series, tonality and building blocks for composition and improvisation. You'll learn how to develop your listening and transcription skills in ways that are useful in any context or setting. You'll learn things about notation that nobody before Ron Gorow has taken the time to distill into a concise, compact and usable format. You'll discover that you can trancribe what you hear and compose without a piano(Gustav Mahler composed symphonies in remote wilderness areas with just paper and pen. Duke Ellington wrote "Mood Indigo" on a paer bag sitting in a taxicab). Ron Gorow helps to bring a world of practical musical possibilities within our grasp. You'll find basic building blocks as well as ear training exercises that challenge even the most advanced ears. This book is written by someone who's actually been there and done it. If you take the time to study this book you will be rewarded.
You have got to be kidding.............2007-04-30
I shouldn't write this because I want to sell my copy. But I wish someone had warned me. This book is actually great for anyone who needs to be told to practice whatever it is they're trying to learn. If it hasn't occurred to you to practice listening for whatever it is you want to learn to hear in music, or whatever musical skill you want, then get this book because it will tell you to do that, and then you'll feel like it's OK to go ahead and do it. Once you percieve that you have permission, then begin to practice listening for the melodies and parts, and practice writing them down. You'll get better at it as you do this. There, I just saved you $20. AND alot of reading time you could have spent practicing hearing and writing. Oh and one other thing I learned from this book: ANYONE can write a book on how to do ANYTHING.
The Gold Standard.......2007-04-08
There is simply no other book that has as much practical information and insight--presented with as much understanding, kindness, and compassion for the trials of the struggling musician/arranger/composer--as does Ron's.
In the music business, he really has "been there, done that," and the joy of it is that he is sharing it all via this amazingly thorough and lucid volume. His work is my personal "Gold Standard" and I can't recommend it enough.
From a budding film composer.......2007-04-04
I am a physician/surgeon by current profession. But my hand to God, I have been preparing my whole adult life for my second career in music as a composer for film. The element that has always been most elusive to me has been the ability to manuscript straight from my head to the paper with a simple pencil. While I'm well adept at Finale, Digital Performer, and MIDI orchestral suites like East West Quantum Orchestral Library, etc. I have always been working at my ear to paper skills. Until I read Ron's book and "got it" I wasn't really quite sure what I was needing to accomplish. Now I know and I'm on my way more than ever to mastering the skill of going from imagination to the manuscript--skipping the usual play it at the piano first method. I'm excited. This isn't an easy venture...I know it wasn't for Ron Gorow either...he earned it when he was young and had the time to get really really good at it. He teaches this abstract skill with a method I've never had the priveledge to utilize. Now it is available to all musicians who understand that this skill will require practice practice practice. It may be innate for some, but for most it is not. Just read the book and do the exercises and you'll gain amazing skills without hardly any effort at all. I praise Ron for making this elusive ability to be a "Human Sequencer" a reality for all of us. Congratulations Ron.
just great.......2007-03-28
hearing and writing music is simply the best resorse i have ever seen in aiding the aural development of musicians .. a must have!!

Book Description
A tangible aspect of living, working, and traveling in the 21st century is the experience of moving between smoke-filled and smoke-free environments. In Globalizing Tobacco Control, Roddey Reid examines what lies behind this experience: the revolution in public attitudes and health codes that regulate daily routines and the life of the body. While the gradual replacement of smoking with non-smoking as the social norm is a global phenomenon, it has not followed the same trajectory everywhere. Reid compares anti-smoking campaigns in the United States, France, and Japan for what they reveal about the nature of globalization and liberal arts of government. He explores distinctive national histories of tobacco; evolving global marketing strategies of transnational tobacco corporations; "social marketing" techniques used to tailor public health messages to particular ethnic communities; and the programs of international public health organizations.

Photoshop CS2 Bible - Professional Edition Book Review.......2006-07-21
Title: Photoshop CS2 Bible - Professional Edition
Author: Laurie Ulrich Fuller, Robert C. Fuller, and Deke McClelland
Publisher: Wiley Publishing, Inc. 2004
ISBN: 0-7645-4179-X
Pages: 649 pages
Reviewer: Bruce Frank
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Deke McClelland is quite possibly the most accessible and humorous Photoshop guru around, rivaled only by Scott Kelby and Russell Brown. In the introduction to this book, he asserts that he was born in Verona in 1511, and later, with diabolical intent, developed a pathogen code named the "Pernicious Instrument of eXtreme Evil" (you guessed it, "pixel" for short). Then, in the words of the introduction, "When his invention turned out to help rather than hurt photography, he went quite mad. He now inflicts his revenge by writing educational books and hosting training videos."
Although written with his characteristic wit, McClelland always returns to the point, very carefully and thoroughly explaining the precise steps needed to achieve various results in Photoshop, so that even a beginner will be able to follow along easily. Having said that, this book is true to its "Professional Edition" designation - it covers very advanced techniques. For example, one very interesting bit of information I picked up is that Layer Styles (automated effects provided in the Layer Styles palette) can be "deconstructed" - that is, by choosing Layer > Layer Style > Create Layers, you can take over and edit each layer of the effect to your satisfaction.
Attention to detail is one of the hallmarks of this book - in the chapter called "Painting and Brushes," McClelland even covers the hardware a Photoshop artist would probably use (the Wacom tablet), and elaborates on the techniques it can facilitate.
Well written and designed, and with color photos and screenshots throughout, this is a tome (649 pages!) that should serve as a useful reference for years to come. Although this is written to cover Photoshop CS, nearly all of the techniques covered would apply to Photoshop CS2 as well. Supplemental information can be found at dekemc.com.
Great photos and graphics, sage advice........2005-11-14
The features you need, the advice you want, the examples you'll refer to again and again: that's what you'll find in this book. The experience and insights that the authors bring to this book have made it one of my favorites among computer books in general and my total favorite among Photoshop books. I recommend this edition of the Bible to anyone who has already used most of the basic features and wants some expert advice to move them on to the next level. The "Professional" tag is appropriate, but you don't need to be an expert to use the book: that's where it takes you. Don't expect this book to baby you and for every single button and dialog box to be covered, because this is a book focused on the features you use for more advanced projects, and the work that pushes the edge of the design envelope. If you're looking for coverage of everything in the Photoshop menus and tools, get the main CS2 Bible, the one that's like 1500 pages. If you want to learn specific stuff to take your work to the next level, the Professional Edition is the one you want.
Very detailed..........2005-09-26
Good book giving the details on all the CS 2's new features. Two thumbs up!
Fantastic Book.......2005-08-29
If you want to take your pictures to the next level this is the book for you. Fantastic and easy to follow .. for the advanced amateur and pro.
Disappointed.......2005-08-13
The Professional Edition appears to be missing any information on at least 2 new Photoshop CS2 features; Smart Sharpening and Reduce Noise. It has sections on Sharpening and Noise BUT does not cover the new CS2 commands. I have not been through the whole book but this situation took me by surprise.
