Book Description
With a foreword by Dr. Neil Shulman, author of "Doc Hollywood", MEDICAL BLOOPERS!! is a collection of real-life, often unbelievable, occurrences in medicine. Some are funny; some, just...amazing. Sensitively written (and a bit non-pc), MEDICAL BLOOPERS!! focuses not on the patient's infirmity, but on the health care worker's contained emotions when facing unusual circumstances. Stories include an escaped convict pretending to be an organ donor and tales of money, potatoes and crystal balls being found in the most unexpected body orifices. In this time of health care tumult, stress and confusion, laughter is the best medicine; a dose of humor is good for what ails you and physicians (along with others) can heal themselves. Great gift for the doctors, nurses and health workers in your life and for those just curious about the lighter side of the serious world of medicine. Doctor's Day: March 30th; Nurses Week in May. Comic illustrations and definitions included.

Book Description
"Hollywood" as a concept applies variously to a particular film style, a factory-based mode of film production, a cartel of powerful media institutions, and a national (and increasingly global) "way of seeing." A complex social, cultural, and industrial phenomenon, Hollywood is arguably the single most important site of cultural production over the past century.
This collection brings together journal articles, published essays, book chapters, and excerpts, which explore Hollywood as a social, economic, industrial, aesthetic, and political force, and as a complex historical entity.

Stranger than Fiction: True Stories by Chuck Palahniuk.......2007-03-08
This is, in fact, one of the strangest books I have ever read -- also one of the funniest and most endearing. I thought about it for weeks and then sent it to several friends.
"SELECTIONS from" .......2005-08-10
yeah... i guess i need to be better at reading the details. this audio CD is NOT the entire book. chuck is my current favorite contemporary writer... bar none.
i have all of his books... and have read several of them several times. this was the first time i have made an audio CD purchase of a Palaniuk book. i was soon to be staring at a ten hour drive through boring territory and figured this would be the coolest audio book i had ever experienced. as a wrestling coach, i was particularly wanting to hear the story about amateur wrestling/wrestlers.
and that is my main beef with the audio book. it is SELECTIONS from the book. the story i was anticipating was not in the audio CD at all... period. when it came to the end i was pretty disappointed. i never did go back to check which of the others didn't appear in the audio book.
i also knew this was NOT a work of fiction in the chuckstyle i am so accustomed to. that is cook. i liked it. the stories are good and the format is fresh and interesting.
bottom line... don't buy the audio CD if you want every last story. therefore, as an audio CD... i had to give this a *3*. if this were a review of the complete book, i am sure it would be a *4* at least. (i would rate his others a *5* in case that helps you) i also ordered Haunted at the same time (old school paper style, btw) and can't wait to get into it.
Book Description
From the bestselling author of Fight Club and Diary, a collection of essays and journalistic pieces that prove that real life has imagination beaten cold in the strangeness and wonder departments
Chuck Palahniuk’s world has always been, well, different from yours and mine. The pieces that comprise Stranger Than Fiction, his first nonfiction collection, prove just how different, in ways both highly entertaining and deeply unsettling. Encounters with alternative culture heroes Marilyn Manson and Juliette Lewis; the peculiar wages of fame attendant on the big budget film production of the movie Fight Club; life as an assembly-line drive train installer by day, hospice volunteer driver by night; the really peculiar lives of submariners; the really violent world (and mangled ears) of college wrestlers; the underground world of iron-pumping anabolic steroid gobblers; the immensely upsetting circumstances of his father’s murder and the trial of his killer—each essay or vignette offers a unique facet of existence as lived in and/or observed by one of our most flagrantly daring and original literary talents.

Intriguing stories, brought to you by the slightly warped mind of Chuck Palahniuk .......2006-10-30
This is a collection of non-fictional short stories about average people doing strange things. I can hear you whispering in my ear, "what kind of strange things"? Well, let me tell you that first, you need a breath mint and secondly you spit a little when you whisper. Despite the wet ear and lingering smell of spinach, I'm talking about the kind of odd things that friends tell you about over and over again after a few beers or half a bottle of wine because it is there best and possibly only story worth telling that they have.
These short stories are about modern men who build castles in Oregon and Idaho, stories about drunken rednecks crashing two story wheat threshers into each other in a demolition derby in Lind Washington, stories about public nudity and sex in Bozeman Montana, stories about working in a hospice and being there when people die, stories about shrunken testicles and the pump of steroids, stories about working on an assembly line and trying to be an author, stories that are essentially as American as apple pie but without the sugar and ice cream.
So, if you're interested in a few intriguing stories, brought to you by the slightly warped mind of Chuck Palahniuk author of "Fight Club", take a look at "Stranger Than Fiction".
A medley of stories, some hit the mark better than the rest.......2005-10-01
When Palahniuk goes on book tours, he often tells a smattering of true-life stories that he heard from his fans, all items that are indeed stranger than fiction. From a man who writes fiction that is often beyond belief, it is interesting to see the true-life tales that pass the Palahniuk strangeness test.
The book starts out with a bang, an opening chapter that provides the reader a voyeuristic field trip into a sex festival. From there, however, Palahniuk doesn't always maintain the momentum. Sometimes it appears as if he's just a bored reporter scribbling down facts, not trying to weave a compelling tale. Several of the stories didn't keep my interest at all, but there is enough good material in here to make the book a worthwhile read.
Palahniuk fans should give it a shot, but don't expect to be blown away.
Another unique piece of work .......2005-07-10
Plot: N/A
Writing Excellent
Pace: Fast
It's a bunch of short stories about real people and events in his life. Some are sad, some are funny, and some are bizarre. The best stories are about the author, his family, and his two weight lifting buddies. The slowest and longest are the combine derby and castle building. Cut those two stories out and the book would be even better. It's worth reading if you want a change of pace from your typical fiction. Grab a little non-fiction that won't bore you.
Fascinating.......2005-05-24
I had never read Palahniuk and "Fight Club" definitely isn't my thing. Yet I was lured by true anecdotes--who can resist a really strange story? This collection introduced me to a an intriguing man and brilliant writer.
The best thing about this collection is that it takes the reader into odd situations and intimate settings that he/she would probably never experience otherwise. Palahniuk takes us with him as he witnesses odd things such as The Rock Creek Lodge Testicle Festival, hangs out with Marilyn Manson, and reveals his "life as a dog." The book also dives into the personal world of Palahniuk--his past, friendships, thought processes, and life before, during, and after the movie "Fight Club." If you enjoyed the movie or any of other Palahniuk's works, "Stranger Than Fiction" is nearly essential to getting to know the man behind it all. He is apparently a curious person with a keen sociological and psychological insight...and he has a distinct sense of humor!
I recommend this book to every writer...actual or aspiring. A running theme in these stories is the practice of writing. How stories come about, take shape, and draw on other stories. It expresses the connection between writing and life, life and fiction, and how these play off eachother. If you write, you will be enthralled by the introduction to the collection alone...and it only gets better from there.
As others have said in their reviews, this collection does contain a few duds. But it's the many fabulous pieces that make your time more than worthwhile. I learned alot of very interesting things and this book contains stories for varied interests. This book made me gasp, smirk, nearly cry, and laugh out loud. The stories stay with you. I am telling everyone about this book: you owe it to yourself to atleast thumb through it.
Better Than I Expected!.......2005-05-23
These stories reveal a more personal side of Palahniuk that you may not have even realized was there. They're hopeful, inspirational, and as always, completely outrageous. These are not the typical quasi-horror stories Chuck has written in the past. But they are excellent stories, and I applaud Chuck for trying something new. I think he did an amazing job with it, and if you like Palahniuk at all, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Along with The Losers' Club (Complete Restored Edition) by Richard Perez, Stranger Than Fiction: True Stories is my favorite Amazon purchase so far this year!

Tough and Long.......2006-08-07
For Intermediate Plus/Advanced players.
Perhaps 350 problems in 24 chapters covering all aspects of defense. You will be exposed to many types/categories of defensive problems. Such as:
- opening leads
- signaling
- inferences from bidding (shape, HCP)
- counting the hand (shape, HCP)
- avoiding end plays
- 2nd hand High
- Ducking
- Giving Declarer a losing option
- Carding technique (pinning/smother play)
Many of the hands took me several minutes to think about.
Not that I could do that at the table, but it helps focus you on what the correct thought processes are.
Very worthwhile book

The best way to develop a working knowledge of anything is to actually work with it--see it work, see it fail, and see what happens when variables are adjusted. Under the guise of an exam-preparation aid, SANS GIAC Certification: Security Essentials Toolkit guides its readers through a series of carefully designed experiments that collectively illustrate how attackers go about breaking into (or just plain breaking) their targets. The authors assume little background knowledge on the reader's part and take care to show you what you need to do in order to see the effects they're trying to demonstrate. This is, above all, a laboratory manual, and the authors deserve kudos for their effort to ensure that you can reproduce their results. A highly graphical design and wide, lay-flat binding make this book all the more useful as a hands-on companion.
The authors' dedication to standardization is evident from the first exercise (this book consists almost entirely of exercises), in which they show how to build a dual-boot system with both Linux and Windows 2000 installed. The idea is that you can build this system once, make an image of it, and then be able to repeatedly break and rebuild your system without wasting time. Subsequent exercises deal with different types of attacks and the defenses that are effective against each. Each exercise has an explicitly illustrated procedure--usually illustrating a successful attack and a failed one (i.e., one that was defended against). You learn not only to install defensive software and trust it, but also to recognize evidence of attacks in log files and in behavioral symptoms. More security books--and technical books in general--should be like this one. --David Wall
Topics covered: The kinds of attacks--against Windows 2000 and Linux systems--that are covered on the SANS Institute's Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) exam, as well as the software tools and configuration strategies that you can use to protect your systems against them. The authors cover many attacks--including Trojans, host spoofs, and others--and many defensive weapons (like firewalls and intrusion detection systems).
Book Description

Based on the SANS Institute's renowned Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) program, this book takes a workbook-style approach that gives you hands-on experience and teaches you how to install, configure, and run the best security tools of the trade.
Customer Reviews:
Not a complete Exam Prep ... but still essential for anyone studying the basics of IT Security.......2007-06-28
The Security Essentials Toolkit is a book that is very easy to pick up and read, and concentrates on the practical elements of the GIAC SANS GSEC exam that differentiate it from the other major vendor neutral certifications (such as the SSCP and Security+). While the Security+ exam may discuss the fact that "Viruses are bad" and review the different types of malware, the GSEC also looks at HOW to detect, avoid, block and/or remove such exploits.
This text was originally published in 2002, and recently celebrated its 5th birthday. However, I would argue that this is not as critical as it may first appear to be. The entire thrust of this book is to encourage you to download, install and experiment with these tools - this is not so much a Textbook, but rather a Lab Guide / Workbook. Although this book includes the vast majority of the tools that you require to sit this exam, it should be noted that the GSEC curriculum is revised regularly, and consequently, this text should be considered an effective starting point - not an all-inclusive text.
Because some of these labs entail installing and running applications that would often breach company policies (port scans, root kits, trojan horses, key loggers and the like), warning are scattered liberally throughout the book to ensure that you have the written permission of the appropriate department before performing any of these steps on your company network - and it's a warning that really must be heeded ... if you're studying for this sort of certification, you must start to understand the requirement for creating such policies, because in the long run, you'll probably be creating the policies for your minions colleagues!
In some environments, setting up these labs may be difficult, as many companies will have web filters that could well block some of these things from being downloaded; a CD with these tools would be a welcome addition to the toolkit.
I would consider this title to be essential reading for anyone considering studying not only the GSEC certification, but for any practical introduction to Information Security / Computer Security (such as the Security+ and SSCP certifications, to name just a selection). However, this should be one of several study texts - it is not a complete exam preparation guide (but doesn't claim to be either).
good book, but not always accurate.......2003-04-20
If you don't have any security background then this book is a good place to start. Be ready, however, for most of the links to be out of date (the book was published in 2002). This can be circumvented by a little help from Google to find the utilities you need for the exercises. There are also a few inaccuracies in the syntax provided. These can be resolved with help from "man" (i.e. 'man ipchains') or the help for the particular utility.
Great hands on book.......2003-01-09
I really liked this book. I liked how it did not just inform you about these tools but actually had you use them to gain understanding. Any good systems/network admin should be familier with the tools in this book. Both UNIX and Windows admins will gain great experiance and understanding of their systems weaknesses.
I have read many books on "hacking" and security and this one is the only one that actually has you use these tools.
It is setup in a very easy to follow and understand format. This book is a must for EVERY Admin, not just for preparing you for a test. Even if you never take a security exam, this book will give you great intro and experience with the use of the tools described.
No time spent proofreading this book.......2002-12-17
This book presents some welcome hands on exercises to learn about security. However, it is very clear that at no time did anyone sit down with the book and actually try out the exercises before the book was published. The result is that many of the exercises simply do not work as written and much time is spent simply troubleshooting the steps.
Apart from the poor quality control of this book, it lacks good solid explanations to accompany most of them. Like many such exercise-oriented book the minimal level of explanations leaves one feeling that they are merely following a recipe in a cookbook.
In summary, while the book offers something that is missing in the marketplace, it seems that is was rushed into print with little quality control. Unfortunately there are no errata sheets available from the publisher.
SANS books are usually very good. But..........2002-07-04
Hi,
I love Sans courses and books,
I liked how this book started but I really got stuck right on the first exercise. L I'm a MCSE and I'm starting to learn the Linux world, and on the first exercise where he was showing how to create a user account thru RLogin on Linux, I believe he missed a step.
I followed his instructions installing Linux (it really has to be the version 7.2 Red Hat) if you try 7.1 the screens will be different from the one in the book. The instructions were good, I created a User account (Linux gave me an opportunity to create a normal user account during installation). I logged in as this new user to start the exercise where he is explaining about trust relationship. And using the Rlogin command, I create the new user account ++ jmm and then on the next step he asks to log in with the new user account?? That is when I got lost. Is there a way the log off in the Shell Prompt (that is where the exercise was done) as "user A" and log in as the new user (user B) that I just created or do I have to totally get out and log off and then connect as jmm (I tried the second option but then it asks for a password in which I did not create for jmm since the exercise did not mentioned to do so. I could not log back in.) Trying to research to see if there are any good books on Windows admins learning Linux (red hat).
I understand that this issue might be too basic, sorry guys, I always been a MS kind of guy. But now I'm trying to test new waters. It would have been great if the author might suggested some previous reading that would give further details on the type of exercise that he is trying to show and just in case you are totally newbie with the Linux O.S.
Thanks
