This book deserves more attention........2002-06-23

As a midlife career-changer I've read many career-oriented books in the last couple of years. I found this one to be more helpful than most. I enjoyed the chapters on value clarification. The idea of "quieting" resonating with what I feel the need to do within myself. Also, Charland's emphasis on "venturing" is helpful in applying the insights gained through introspection. The real world examples were inspirational. The tone of the book was just right: authoritative without feeling heavy. It struck the correct light and lively tone, in my opinion. Overall I feel like this book deserves a larger audience it has likely so far received as the product of a relatively small publisher. Thanks to the author for his wisdom and guidance.

Electrical drives in general play a key role in power generation, household appliances, automotive and industrial applications. The rapidly expanding area of adjustable speed drives as used in robotics, wind turbines and hybrid vehicles is driven by innovations in machine design, power semi-conductors, digital signal processors and simulation software.

A comprehensive overview of starting controls and their application to various types of induction motors provides a valuable assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of control. You'll find a helpful discussion of some of the latest electronic "smart" motor controllers, as well as a section covering the attributes and capabilities of the "wound-rotor motor," including how to configure a basic control system for it. A basis is given to compare motor torque and operating characteristics using "starters." Then this book is a good satrting point, it gives you a general idear of this technology, examples and a good base to continue searching variable speed drives.

Modern ac drives: explaining the practical aspects.......2001-02-02

Looking for a book about AC Drives written for technicians without mathematical background, I came up with this one. This text is clearly the result of an experienced engineer who tries to explain the fundamentals of modern driving technology in human language. Due to this attempt, mathematics had to be reduced to a minimum and most fundamental principles about electrical motors and driving technology have to be accepted as they are. Unfortunately, if you want to know why and how it happens, this book may not be the right choice. On the contrary, if you are purchasing a text with rule of thumbs, back of the envelope type calculations and practical aspects on motors and drives (AC & DC), this book deserves to be considered. A strong emphasis lies on the energy saving aspect of modern AC drives which is very important for all technicians using these drives. If there was an SI version of this text, I'd recommend it also to my colleagues/customers in Europe.

Hilarious Tales From The 'Hood.......2004-12-31

Melissa Jarvis appears to have turned the vital job of a stay-at-home mom into an art form. Of course, much of that art came when one of her children practiced spelling the word 'butt' on the living room wall the day before a planned party. This story, plus tales of the wonder of childhood smells, and the ways children and pets are similar are all included in this hilarious and heart warming book. Every mother can learn a lesson from looking at their family life from Ms. Jarvis' perspective. And someday one of these moms will find that she too has raised a seven year old police detective who needs a timeout. Buy this book. It makes growing up a lot easier.

This book is a good basic overview of the industry from the journalist's perspective. Covers such issues as licenses and trademarks, business plan and contracts, releases and promotion. The intro seems a little long-winded, but one could skip over that. Roni does answer one question clearly, though: "For most indies, BMI proves the preferable performing rights organization since it monitors college and public radio stations which are more apt to play indie records." Read the book, but don't buy it - check it out from the library.

Them music industry is a complicate and harsh environment and it is easy to fail at starting your own business. Fortunately there are books around that can help you reach your goal faster and with much more ease, and this is one of them. It covers a lot of the aspects, twists and turns in the music industry but it misses out on some very crucial points which are presented in "Ty Cohen's Secrets to Making Money in the Music Industry (3-Piece Mega Audio CD Set)" by Ty Cohen " , a better and more detailed book about the subject, and an easier one too.

Could have been much better but ill get it some credit that i did learn a pionter or two. I highly recommend books purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit on Amazon, Music business 101, Future of music and Guide to releasing an independent record by Tim Sweeney.

Superficial.......2004-01-13

Let me start out by pointing out the good things about the book. It is well written and covers every aspect critical to the successful launch of a record label.

Unfortunately, the book is not very thorough. In fact, the book is barely more than just a superficial laundry list just listing all the things that you need to be aware of. But at all times, the author completely fails to provide a well-researched, indepth treatment of any subject that it covers.

For example, it mentions that you need a music attorney to make sure nobody steals your copyright and negotiates your contracts. Well, that's common sense, I don't need to spend money on a book to tell me such basic things. I wanted to find out how to go about launching a label. Well, the authors recommends that I incorporate and think about the difference of LLC. and C-Corporation. She wastes 2 pages (= 1% of this very thin book) on basic knowledge that many other brilliantly written books about business law cover at much greater depth. Why did she even bother? She wastes another 20 pages on such generalities and topics that are mostly common sense.

Will she get to the good stuff? How do I promote a record? How do I go about approaching a DJ, a radio station, a music reviewer? Her answer: hire a good promoter. Duh. Come on, this book is cheap, but I did pay money for information. Why not explain how radio promotion works? That's one of the critical subjects of them all...In short, the book is too superficial and basic to be of any value to anyone serious about starting a label. Avoid and check out the many other wonderful books here on Amazon.com instead.

Yes, you can compute using tinkertoys!.......2000-06-30

The master machinator is at it again, explaining computer science in ways that are offbeat, understandable and exciting. Yes, it is true that a functional computer was built by students at M. I. T. using Tinkertoys, and it played a mean game of tic-tac-toe. While fun to think about and look at, this idea contains much that is deeply significant. As those exposed to Turing Machines know, located in chapter six of this book and found in Dewdney's other works, computer computations are built using very simple base models. There is no theoretical distinction between the actions of a Tinkertoy computer and the fastest supercomputer. The ultimate capabilities of computers, if such things really exist, are not a function of the complexity of the base operations.
Which leads to the discussion of a heated debate taking place in and around the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community. Arguers against the notion of true machine intelligence use the underlying simplicity of computer computations to refute the idea that machines can ever develop self-awareness. Which is now becoming the irrefutable proof of true AI, supplanting the Turing test. Dewdney handles this philosophical discussion very well, posing his own questions. Such as, will we ever truly know what thinking really is?
Chaotic music, neural networks, programming Star Trek and golf games; computers that "passed" the Turing test and computer sculptures are just some of the additional material covered. The number of ways Dewdney finds to further explain computer science is nothing short of amazing.
Another in a growing list of superb primers in computer science by this author, one can only hope that they keep coming. Each essay is a jewel to be treasured and pondered.

Curious Book.......2001-01-06

This book is ideal for anyone who likes to tinker with computers and/or is into programming, electroincs, math, or physics. It is a composition of mental explorations which range from building a computer out of tinkertoys to chaos theory, computer-generated music, and fractal geometry. Most chapters are easy reads, but a couple get a little dry. Overall it was a very enjoyable, thought-provoking book.

An excellent book.......2004-02-26

I will not go into an huge indepth review on this book. I bought this book when it first came out and it had by far some of the most update information in it on PC hardware mid 2003. This book helped me prepare and pass my A+ Exams. Through this books entirety it was hard to find errors and misprints of any kind. But like any book of this size there is bound to be some mistakes. For the serious PC hardware Technician this book is great as a refrence to goto when you answers to questions. This book is worded and laided out well.

Just what every tech needs to have on there desk!.......2003-07-14

As a Technical Computer Instructor, I have certain book sitting on my desk all the time, as reference guides. Now that I am teaching several A+ classes I have another book that will be right out in front with others.

Over 14 years in this industry and certain I have found certain names to be trusted with producing high quality material; Stephen Bigelow is one of those names. High work in this text is first rate, and while this book doesn't cover or is written from any specific exam, I can see this book being used for A+ and CST and CNCT exams.

One thing that has always impressed me about Bigelow's work, and this book is no exception, is the vast number, over 1000 diagnostic symptoms to learn from.

There is so much troubleshooting information, not only for Intel, but also AMD and what is truly noteworthy is the fact that the book is so technically up to date with the material is covers.

The cd included has a number of tools and utilities that could be useful. Also there is several appendices, of which is a DLS Technician 4 Exam. While this exam is not an "Industry" recognized exam it is worth the $50.00 to take.

The DLS4 exam is an excellent tool to measure your understanding of the material in the book. Overall a very good book that and has certainly come in handy.
