Good info & great for Brits, but few others.......2001-11-21
My experience as an American expat moving/living/working in Greece motivated me to buy this book in hopes of learning something new or at least confirming what is real and true. That was not the case for me.
While Mr. Reynolds obviously knows Greece and some details from experience and knowledge of the language, the majority of the information given is aimed primarily and specifically toward people from the UK. So, if you are from the UK, this book may be for you. I say 'may be' because a lot of topics are missing. There are also no website addresses.
If you're not from the UK, this book still offers a brief overview that those with no knowledge of Greece may find useful, but when tackling employment and visa/work permit issues, it will offer you nothing. And unfortunately, since this half of the title refers to working, it doesn't fulfill its promise if you are from somewhere other than the UK.
This book is also written from a man's point of view and experiences, and life and work for a woman in Greece is slightly different. I don't like to be critical because I realize it's difficult to write a book, however I know many will be disappointed if purchasing this book as a resource to navigating Greece.

Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (Lab Manual)
ASIN: 0766817687 |
Book Description
Now in its second edition, Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers contains an all-new chapter on micro PLCs as well as newly available, manufacturer-specific photos to illustrate principles of PLC operation. Updated to include recent industry innovations, and expanded as a result of reader feedback, this book begins with an orientation to the general principles underlying all PLC operations which features leading manufacturers such as General Electric, Omron, Mitsubishi, and Seimens. Subsequent chapters invite readers to delve into the Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley SLC 500 family of PLCs, exploring their operation and instruction set(s) in detail. A well-engineered, fully integrated supplement package is also available for educators and trainers seeking to use this book to deliver a professional-level, hands-on PLC learning experience with minimal advanced preparation.

SLC500 PLCs.......2004-06-26
Excellent for getting a good training on PLCs. First half is general PLCs and second half mostly SLC500. This is the main book, not the Lab Manual. You can order the lab manual that has the large words "Lab Manual" on the cover. Just to be sure I requested NOT getting the lab manual. I also keep this book at work for ref book.
Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (Electrical T.......2002-12-22
This is a LAB Manual. It is no good unless you have the software that goes along with it. I will be returning it.
Good starters book.......2001-08-28
I recommend this book to my students who are getting started in PLC programming. It is a good beginner's book but more advanced readers will be disappointed. The reason I did not give it five stars is because the book is a little too pricey for basically being a lab manual. With this book and the PLC drivers at http://www.vhmiautomation.com/PLCCD.html my students have had great success with interfacing to various PLCs also.
LAB MANUAL.......2000-11-16
What the publisher's blurb and the other reviews DON"T say is that this is a LAB MANUAL! If you don't have the appropiate software it's value is very limited. I will be returning it to exchange for a real "Intro to PLC's".
An Instructors Dream.......1999-12-16
I teach a basic course in programmable logic controllers. I have found this book to be a dream come true. While there are a lot of books out today dealing with PLCs most of them fall far short of this book. This is the first book that I have found that covers "Documenting Your System" which is a very important subject that has been ignored by other authors. I highly recommended this book.

Technician's Guide To Programmable Controllers
ASIN: 0750631198 |
Book Description
This is the introduction to PLCs for which baffled students, technicians and managers have been waiting. In this straightforward guide Bill Bolton has kept the maths to a minimum, avoided detailed programming instructions and presented the subject in a way that is not device-specific.
Having read this book you should be able to:
* Identify the main design characteristics and internal architecture of PLCs
* Describe and identify the characteristics of commonly used input and output devices
* Explain the processing of inputs and outputs by PLCs
* Describe communication links involved with control systems
* Develop ladder programs for the logic functions AND, OR, NOR, NAND, NOT and XOR
* Develop ladder programs involving internal relays, timers, counters, shift registers, sequencers and data handling
* Identify methods used for testing and debugging
Ideal as an accessible introduction for university students, the second edition includes expanded sections on internal architecture, input-output devices, networks, and programming languages with microprocessor systems, and has been fully revised in line with the new BTEC Higher National unit on PLCs, and the 2000 specifications for the Advanced GNVQ unit from Edexcel.
A clear and concise introduction for students, technicians, engineers and managers
Ideal for BTEC National, HNC, HND and first-year degree modules
Revised in line with the new BTEC Higher National unit on PLCs and the 2000 revision of the Advanced GNVQ unit (now an optional unit)
Customer Reviews:
Good Book with many mistakes.......2004-09-04
This is a great book for beginning PLC programmers, but there are numerouse errors throughout the book which cause confusion when trying to understand the use of Internal Relays, Timers and Counters. Use caution and refer back to the text when completing the tests at the end of each section and when reading about how some ladder logic is functioning, I noticed miss-labled Inputs.
Do not buy this book if youre programming STL.......2000-01-11
I did not get any benefits of this book, sadly.
It is useless with Siemens S7 and you want to learn the STL language.
To few examples with this language.
Sorry
Very good for getting your feet wet with plc's.......1998-12-02
This is a very good introduction for those who have no personal experience with plc's. It does not focus on one brand, but introduces the reader to various manufacturers and the way each functions in comparison to each other. It is great for understanding the capabilities of PLC's. Further information is needed to learn to program and design with plc's.
Excellant introduction to programmable logic controllers!.......1998-07-07
This book is an excellant text for anyone just starting out or just wanting to brush up on programmable logic controllers. The content and layout of the information was very good. It made it easy to start with the basics and work up to the more complex operations. I especially liked that the book did not focus on one particular brand name of controller, but mentioned each brand and included many program examples of all the major brands.
The only drawback I found was that there seemed to be a lot of evident errors and misprints witht the text. Some are obvious such as incorrect numbering, while others I caught by asking questions of experienced individuals. I liked the fact that each chapter included a set of chapter review questions, but once again there seemed to be many misprints and incorrect answers. I only wish that the publisher would have checked closer for the misprints.
Book Description
The first comprehensive history of the transition from slavery to sharecropping, this major study draws on thousands of previously untapped sources and statistics to reconstruct the socioeconomic history of the antebellum plantation and the birth of the free black worker. Jaynes thoroughly reexamines the symbiotic nature of the sharecropping system for both planters and workers--how it offered planters a stable work force and offered workers relative freedom, a unified family, and payment for their labor--and analyzes the social and economic effects of sharecropping on the larger social structure. At the same time, he argues that the collective organization and self-help activities of the freedpeople, the democratic fever incited by black leaders and local agents of the Freedmen's Bureau, and the failure of federal policy were also key factors in the reorganization of the southern plantation and the entry of blacks into the post war economy.

so cute!.......2006-06-11
This book's been out for a while, but I just picked up another copy for a friend because it's such a great pick-me-up after a girl's ended a relationship! I buy a copy for every friend I have who dumps a guy - just to show that we're all in it together. The author's not out to save the world, one pair of Jimmy Choos at a time. Enjoy the art, laugh at the stories and recognize this book for what it is: An easy, fun read.
Title is funnier than the rest of the book.......2006-06-07
At first the book is funny, because of the general idea of it, but after you read a few pages you get bored.

Leading producers, directors, and actors (e.g., Kenneth Strickfaden, William Castle, John Carradine) discuss the genre, their colleagues, directing styles, business deals and moviemaking secrets. There is a 251-item filmography.
Customer Reviews:
Greatest book of its kind.......1999-09-05
Mr. Atkins should be extremely proud of this book. With interviews with such film legends as Gloria Stuart, it serves as a great textbook for lovers and students of film history.
A fan's heartfelt tribute.......1999-02-02
Since the 1980s, a renaissance in vintage horror films has supported a spate of books recounting the lives and careers of stars Karloff, Lugosi and the Chaneys, not to mention new information about stalwart co-stars John Carradine, Dwight Frye, Lionel Atwill, Colin Clive and Ernest Thesiger. Now comes Rick Atkins' admittedly star-struck volume. At age 17, he began researching and interviewing the people who made horror happen in the talkies -- Universal Studios' Carl Laemmle Jr., who produced Dracula and Frankenstein (both 1931), The Old Dark House and The Mummy (in 1932), The Black Cat (1934) -- plus actors Carradine, Ralph Bellamy and Alan Napier, actresses Gloria Stuart, Evelyn Ankers, Zita Johann, director William Castle and special effects man Ken Strickfaden, among others. While Atkins' writing is a bit sketchy in places, the roundup of personal reminiscences, photographs and a comprehensive filmography and bio-glossary of personalities make this little tome an odd and specialized delight.

Book Description
"I am going because I would have no peace if I stayed." So said Donald Crowhurst as he set sail on what should have been a single-handed, non-stop, round-the-world boat voyage. In the middle of the Sargasso Sea, however, his boat falling to pieces, he had a brain-frying ideaâ¦
When Chris Mikul first heard this curious tale, it inspired him to begin collating information and writing about other strange lives, eccentrics, and "beacons of shining if erratic brilliance in a world of sensible conformity". Bizarrism is the result.
Customer Reviews:
A pleasant book about unbalanced people.......2005-12-19
This book covers lots of nice little stories about true believers of unbelievable things. It covers everything from hollow earth enthusiasts to people who question the germ theory of disease and people with sex behaviors and beliefs so goofy you'll wind up feeling REALLY secure and happy with your own personal life. It's a great book for the guest bathroom, since each chapter is short and breezy. Lots of fun re-reading it, too. If you like reading about cults and cult-like beliefs, you'll like this book.
Book Description
Original discoveries in the endgame unearthed by Britain's leading expert and world championship challenger.
Customer Reviews:
Practical endgames analysed in depth.......2005-04-25
This book essentially consists of a series of endgames analysed in depth. For the most part the examples are taken from practical play or from other endgame books. The author has discovered some flaws in the analysis of some endgames in other books, in special in Fine`s work "Basic Chess Endings". (See my review of the edition revised by P. Benko of this book).
As the author says in the preface, it is almost impossible in chess analysis of any kind to avoid some errors. In this respect I discovered a hole and omission in the analysis of the Steinitz-Gunsberg endgame (9th match game for the world title, 1890, page 49, diagram 65 of the 3rd revised edition). This endgame is evaluated as a win for black. In fact, it is a draw. If 3.Kh6 g5, instead of the losing 4.hg? white plays the extremely unobvious 4.Ra3! or 4.Ra8! and draws. The correct evaluation of this endgame (attributed to I. Zaitsev) appeared in the revised (by J.Estrin and I. Romanow) german edition (Schachverlag Rudi Schmaus, 1985, page 11) of the Levenfish and Smyslov book on rook endgames. I checked the correctness of Zaitsev's move Ra3! with the aid of Fritz and the Nalimov tablebases. In the process, I discovered the dual solution Ra8!. I contacted the author directly on ICC (Internet Chess Club). He was *very* responsive and he agreed with the previous analysis. He was not aware that the correct analysis had already been published. However, this omission is forgivable because the (rare) german edition of Levenfish's and Smyslov's work is probably the only with updated analysis and the author consulted only the english edition.
I highly recommend this book for the intermediated to advanced player trying to improve her endgame play. It is a pity that this book is now out of print. Maybe it is time for a new updated edition! In the meantime, it would be useful for users of previous editions if Batsford and the author would maintain a webpage with updated analysis. In this case, the book would deserve 5 stars.

Not For Dummies.......2007-08-16
Apple iMac Desktop with 20" Display MA876LL/A (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, SuperDrive) The book started well enough but as it went on it became a book for people more advanced than me. Alot of things were not covered to the extent that it didn't lead anywhere. also did not have a glossary of terms, and that left me blind to what I was reading. Anyway I use as a go to when I get lost.

Not for Mac OS-X.......2007-05-07
Outdated and obsolete. Of little use for my new iMac running on OS-X. Amazon was gracious enough to take the book back and refund my money.
Very useful but not perfect.......2007-03-20
When things do not go according to its instructions it can leave you with nowhere else to go, as when I connected the FireWire, according to its instructions, and the 'continue' button remained grey leaving me at a loss. Still, as I said, very useful.
iMac for Dummies.......2007-03-08
The book mentions all the things you can do, but most of the time not how to do it.
iMac for Dummies, 4th Edition.......2007-02-20
Good tool. Not as funny as earlier dummies books on Mac's. It was slighty outdated, as my new IMac had newer items included, that were not in book. Still would recommend.
