Not Recommended.......2001-08-18

I bought this book recently together with the author's other book, Getting a Job in New Zealand. Plenty of pages were spent on immigration procedures ( and samples of application forms) which are readily available from the internet and are more up to date. The author has too much British bias and, I suspect, this book was intended only for potential immigrants from UK who also might not find anything useful. Having read a lot of books on the subject,I do not recommend this book to anyone.

Due to the increasing complexity of television and video equipment there is a growing need for service information that is current, accurate, affordable and readily available. The purpose of this book is to provide the workshop technician and the field engineer with a valuable and convenient method of fault finding without the need to consult manufacturer's data books, which can be expensive and are often out of stock.

Each device is illustrated with a pin-out diagram, and all the measurements and signal data in the book were taken under actual working conditions. The information is designed so that the engineer can quickly compare voltage measurements and signal in/out data on a faulty device, with the devices in the book.

The second edition covers over 70 ICs not included previously, making this book an essential update for the many service engineers who have discovered that John Edwards books are a vital workshop tool. However, the purpose of the book remains to cover the devices most frequently found faulty in television sets in production since the late 1980s, so all the key ICs will still be found here.

This book will also be invaluable for colleges running City & Guilds 2240 courses and NVQs.

Great book about Ben's parents.......2007-03-19

Ok, I'll admit it. I bought the book with the hope of getting a glimpse into the childhood and family life of Ben Stiller. I didn't find out much about him, but I did learn a lot about his parents. I first saw Jerry Stiller in Seinfeld, I had no idea what a long resume he had prior to that. I enjoyed every page of his book and didn't want it to end. He certainly has worked hard for all his fame and I appreciate that he shared so many stories with his honest feelings. Jerry and his wife are both extremely talented and versatile performers.

Life, love and laughter..........2003-09-09

Really liked this book. Jerry Stiller takes us on a trip through his life, and it's funny, sad, and always interesting. I found out so many things about him that I didn't know--such as: he was a stage actor, in Shakespeare, no less! And, his courtship of, and eventual marriage to, Anne Meara, is related--sometimes humorously, sometimes seriously, but always with honesty. Jerry and Anne discover that their career aspirations aren't really the same, and each builds their own career, but never forgetting each other. The road is sometimes bumpy, but they don't lose sight of one another, and their love for each other is deep and true. A fine book, Mr. Stiller!

Disappointing effort from an otherwise funny guy.......2001-12-25

Read MARRIED TO LAUGHTER; A LOVE STORY FEATURING
ANNE MEARA by Jerry Stiller . . . had looked forward to this book
as I've always enjoyed Stiller's work (even before he was
"rediscovered" on SEINFELD) . . . however, it just didn't
do very much for me . . . most of the emphasis is on his work
in the theater . . . there's very little about his work on television . . . and if you're expecting anything about Ben Stiller, you won't find it here--except for one photograph when he was younger.

Not quite sure why I did not like this book . . . but couldn't even find that many memorable passages to share with you . . . that is usually a tip-off to me; i.e., if I'm "into" a book, I'll be making all sorts of notes about it . . . on this one, all I could come up with was the following:

As the curtain rose I realized in that split second that Hank was
right. I had never really spoken to anyone onstage; worse yet, I had never listened. I was always Acting, with a capital A. Had my success in college been a gigantic hoax?

[on his love for cooking and his special recipe for Chicken Gai Yung]I decided I could sell the delicious chicken legs door to door. I told Anne my idea. I'd marinate the legs overnight, broil then in the morning,and then hit every apartment building on the West Side. A dollar a leg. I figured it was an idea whose time had come, and it took me away from the pain of rejection. We'd become rich and possibly franchise the idea. You're sitting at home, watching TV. A knock on the door, "I'm selling
Chicken Gai Yung. It's only a buck." Who could resist?

[explaining jazz to Anne, who never understood it] "Because you're orderly. Jazz can be chaotic. It's like some storm that suddenly erupts spontaneously in a musician's soul. It's somebody else's sunset--someone else's terror. Who wants to hear the musical version of someone else's problems? A lot of dissonance. Just when you're ready to say, 'I've had enough,' you hear the
thread of a melody. It falls easily on the ears. The storm has subsided. You're suddenly caught up and now you're listening to Bill Evan's inner voice. He's taken us on a trip we've all been on ourselves at one time or another. Now he's out of his wilderness. The search for life's' golden path is over." I was
starting to sound like a poet.

Self absorbed,self centered minus insight or introspection.......2001-10-06

Jerry Stiller has lived a long interesting life which one might think would lead to some internal truths or insights. Instead he reveals himself to be a self-absorbed, self-centered individual from his earliest years. He admits he never "gets" his wife's playwriting - and after almost 50 years of marriage, he wonders if they'll have anything in common if both of their careers come to an end. Even humorous anecdotes are few and far between...the anecdotes about other performers are brief and superficial (Robin Williams and Walter Matthau receive some praise, but only because they were generous performers - generous to Jerry, of course). There are more than a few biggoted and stereotypical remarks about his wife's Irish-American family and background, which would not be tolerated if they were reversed and directed toward *his* ethnic background (Stiller quite matter-of-factly mentions Henny Youngman's reference to Nantucket Island as Goy-ville...) I wish Ann Meara would write her version of their lives.

Excellent for Special Effects/Hammer Fans.......2006-06-12

This book is well written and researched. It covers five horror film creators: James Whale, Willis O'Brien, Ray Harryhausen, Terrence Fisher and Freddie Francis.

The Whale section is good but covers ground that is equally covered from other sources.

The O'Brien and Harryhausen chapters are possibly the best available sources on the two greatest SPX artists.

The Fisher and Francis sections provide good coverage of these Britsh horror directors. The Freddie Francis chapter is the best source I've read for his wildly uneven career and his IMHO greatly superior to the Wheeler Dixon book on Francis.

Great Book on Special Effects Pioneers.......1998-12-08

There is no better biography of Willis O'Brien the man who brought dinosaurs to life and of his protege Ray Harryhausen who made more dinos move and was largely responsible for the original Mighty Joe Young. In addition, there are fine pieces on James Whale, Terence Fisher, and Freddie Francis who invented and re-invented the modern gothic horror film.

The only reason to buy the book is the list of suppliers in the back. The only list I've found so far for paints which are safe for use on skin.

I found this book disapointing.
The photos are beautiful, but too much space is used on 'lick-and-stick' tatoos. One was more than enough.
If you can't figure out how to apply them from the instuctions on the card, you have a problem...

More images of body paint or henna would have been appropriate.

The book also promised tips on makeup and hair, I found the styles mundane and the instructions mediocre .

If you are a teenage girl looking for a way to shock your parents, this book will definately assist you. Or, if you live in a trailer park, this is the book for you. Not a good book for a person who takes thier tattoos and peircings serious. The book was serious and trivial, but in all seriousness I am sure most high school girls would love it -- OK, at least the "bad" girls.

The cover photo immortalizes the teen-glitter-glam pop princess overkill look of the late '90s. Unfortunately, most of the inside isn't that glamorous, featuring a number of body-art ideas that are unlikely to appeal to even the most fearless fashion experimenters (barcode temporary tattoos? yuck!). Still, some of the tips are informative, and some of the photos are cute enough to appeal to Spicemania nostalgists. Probably a good stocking-stuffer for younger teens who are uninhibited by notions of good taste.

This book was pretty cool it showed me how to do all these things with my hair you know new and modern kinda stuff I liked that part. It also gave me some tips on piercing stuff on my own some sterilization tecniques and stuff that was a life saver cause I didn't get an infection. it also tells you how to draw those awsome designs on your hands and draw little forehead orniments. I gave this book only 4 stars cause some of the intstructions are confusing.

This book covers a lot of QG ground. Two very strong players collaborate here on a range of 1. d4 d5 2. c4 ideas. This presents an interesting overview before you step deeper into variations with books like Matthew Sadler's award-winning Queen's Gambit Declined.

The book includes traditional Queen's Gambit Declined lines, the Slav and Semi-Slav, Queen's Gambit Accepted, and the resurgent interest in other QGD lines, like the Vienna and Ragozin variations.

I use Word a great deal. I bought this book when I updated my computer. I now have people in my office who call me when they want help. Before I had to do a lot of trial and error. This book is greatr.
