Starting to learn..........1999-11-25
The book is exactly as it's title states, it is a 'simple guide'. Having said that, it is a good introduction to understanding basic etiquette and helped build a better picture for someone who has never been to the middle east. This book would certainly be a useful 'pocket guide', however I was left wanting for more information.

Great info !.......2000-05-04
We bought this book because my husband was considering a job offer in Saudi Arabia. Before he went there for a week visit, we read the book over and over again. I personally found the book very informative, detailed and interesting, from getting the visa to shopping, finding a place, etc even the brief history, this book tells all! There's only one thing that I reckon the authors should elaborate more, women's issues. In my case, I want to know what's the prospect getting a job for me. They pointed out that it's almost impossible for women to work, but what about teaching in schools/ lecturing in university? Maybe I should explore this matter myself.
Anyway, we're planning to move there soon.

Book Description
An important new resource for the international utility market
Over the past two decades, static reactive power compensators have evolved into a mature technology and become an integral part of modern electrical power systems. They are one of the key devices in flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS). Coordination of static compensators with other controllable FACTS devices promises not only tremendously enhanced power system controllability, but also the extension of power transfer capability of existing transmission corridors to near their thermal capacities, thus delaying or even curtailing the need to invest in new transmission facilities.
Offering both an in-depth presentation of theoretical concepts and practical applications pertaining to these power compensators, Thyristor-Based FACTS Controllers for Electrical Transmission Systems fills the need for an appropriate text on this emerging technology. Replete with examples and case studies on control design and performance, the book provides an important resource for both students and engineers working in the field.

Buy this book if you want to laugh yourself silly!.......2001-12-24
This book is a hilarious look at the justice system in NY. The writer is very witty but also has a twisted sense of humour. This is a very funny book that at times will have you laughing out loud. I was also laughing at some things I never though I would find funny. Pick up this book and you will see what I mean by that!

Created as a companion piece to Martin Scorsese's PBS documentary No Direction Home: Bob Dylan, The Bob Dylan Scrapbook, 1956-1966 is a visual and educational treat for old and new Dylanphiles alike. Written by Robert Santelli, the director of Seattle's Experience Music Project and curator of the museum's Bob Dylan's American Journey exhibit, the book is very well researched and presented in a scrapbook format filled with removable reproductions, including handwritten lyrics of "Gates of Eden," "Blowin' in the Wind," and "Chimes of Freedom," programs of Dylan's historical performances, various bits of memorabilia, and endless amount of photographs. The Bob Dylan Scrapbook, 1956-1966 will provide the new Dylan fan with loads of background information and anecdotes that were left out of Scorsese's film. Lifelong Dylanphiles will likely know Dylan's late 1950s to mid 1960s history already, and will be enchanted by the endless reproductions that are strategically placed throughout the book. If that wasn't enough, the book also includes a 45 minute CD of 18 interviews, ten of which appeared in the No Direction Home documentary. If you ever want to open someone up to the world of Bob Dylan there is no better place to point them to this incredible trifeca: No Direction Home: Bob Dylan on DVD, No Direction Home: The Soundtrack (The Bootleg Series Vol. 7) on CD, and this wonderful book. --Rob Bracco

GRRRREAT!!!.......2007-09-24
Really Great pictures of his earlier times--check out two of Bob's stunning pictures--one on page 23 and another on page 38--Wow!! You also get replications of handwritten lyrics and replications of all sorts of interesting memorabilia, plus interesting reading also. This is a must have scrap book for fans. I'm happy I got it. I found it interesting to notice that in a very stunning picture of Joan Baez where she is next to Bob Dylan in a mini booklet inserted on page 28 that she had uncommonly beautiful lips just as Bob Dylan had uncommonly beautiful lips noticeable in many pictures and during the press conference at San Francisco--on the DVD, Dylan Speaks (during the close-ups). They made a beautiful couple indeed. Both had artistic style noses and beautiful lips. There are all sorts of things to discover and look at. What do you see or discover in this scrapbook?
if u've seen "no direction home' then buy this book.......2007-09-05
there are so many keepsakes and rare photos and its just an amazing book. Dont listen to me just buy this BUY it BUY IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A feast for the senses!.......2007-07-21
The Bob Dylan Scrapbook 1956-1966 is a a great addition to any Dylan fan's collection. Not only is it visually pleasing, it is a delight to peruse the pictures, photos, song lyrics etc. The scrapbook also comes with an audio CD, comprising 45 minutes of 18 Dylan interviews.
The book is divided into several parts, namely, The Early Years, 1956-1960, that traces Dylan's early beginnings as a high school musician in Hibbing High School in Minnesota, to his move to Minneapolis, where he discovers Dinkytown, a bohemian refuge, and where Dylan's passion for folk music deepens. Some of the scraps here include Dylan's yearbook picture and entry.
The second part is Talking New York, 1961... some highlights are Dylan's meeting with his mentor, Woody Guthrie. There is also a reproduction of Dylan's handwritten lyrics to Talking New York.
Part 3: The Times They are a Changin' - reproduction of handwritten lyrics to Blowin in the Wind, pictures of Dylan and Suze Rotolo, one of which winds up as the cover picture for his album Freewheelin', touches a bit on his relationship with Rotolo, and also his further delving into songwriting. Also touches on some of Dylan's social activism, his collaboration with Joan Baez, and a full-color poster for the Newport Folk Festival, 1963.
The other parts in brief are 4: Another Side of Bob Dylan, 1964, 5: Bringing it all Back Home, 1965, 6: Blonde on Blonde, 1965-1966.
There are lots more to savor in this scrapbook, just too lengthy for me to list...but, there are lots of treasures here for Dylanphiles to unearth, discover & enjoy!
Bob Dylan Scrapbook.......2007-05-31
This is just plain fun, fun, fun. As in been there done that by a genius of song. Better than the everyready battery bunny for lasting and multiplying and reproducing and keeping us hopping to the tunes of our lives. Can you believe this mortal man's career on planet earth and just imagine what heaven has in store? Go BOB go. This book is a little tiny corner of great big house. I gave one away as a present to a Dylan nut like myself and kept one for me. What can one say about greatness...can I just breath the same air as you...seen his shows three times. Enufff already.
The best gift I've received in 49 years!.......2007-03-17
My son gave me this for Christmas and I have been totally captivated with it since. The intresting odesey of innocent enthusiasm and self preservating isolation through the early life and mind of such a genuis is such a facinating privilage to experience. Please, please Bob, write 1967 through 2007. I will buy every version as it comes out. The scrapbook layout and radio interviews take you back to experience it. His insight and compliments of other artist show him to be most gracious and real. I will treasure this as it answered so many questions I've had over these years. Thanks Bob for sharing so many personal details of yours.

Book Description
"Once upon a time there were three men who exemplified, without knowing it, my ideal in life. All of them became famous as writers, influential thinkers, and public figures. Their names are Clifton Fadiman, Lionel Trilling, and Jacques Barzun. They met in college, they remained aware of one another as friends or, if less than friends, companions and fellow crusaders on behalf of similar ideals. Although one of them never knew of my existence, the second ignored it, and the third treated me with formal kindness, without them I would have had no concrete model in my youth of what I wanted to become. Theirs was the universe in which I wished to have my being."
With these words, Carolyn Heilbrun begins a personal, pointed, and surprisingly moving account of how a woman, destined to become one of the leading feminist critics of her day as well as one of our most popular mystery novelists, found the models for the life she aspired to in men who neither imagined nor countenanced women as their equals or colleagues. Remembering these three figures as they were when she hung upon their printed words and professorial presences, reappraising them now half a century later, Heilbrun vividly evokes what these remarkable individuals had to offer to an admiring young woman who could not acknowledge--and later would not accept--the impossibility of following in their paths.
In the admired anthologies, magazine articles, and introductions through which Fadiman transmitted the world of high culture to an educated general public, he indicated no devotion to questions of female destiny; yet long before Heilbrun could imagine the life in the academy that was denied to Fadiman but would eventually be hers, his was the career to which she privately aspired. Later, in her days as a graduate student at Columbia, it was Trilling who would have the most powerful intellectual effect upon her, formulating as he did the tensions inherent in the desire to salvage what was of worth from a sad, almost moribund culture, even if he frankly admitted to no interest in teaching women or in considering their destinies beyond the domestic sphere. Only the courtly Barzun, also a mentor at Columbia, seemed capable of respecting female accomplishment and eschewing stereotyped views of women. Yet together, all three men unconsciously made Heilbrun's life as a feminist possible, by representing both what she wished to join and what she needed to struggle against.
When Men Were the Only Models We Had is a loving, admiring, but stringent account of youthful enthusiasms, of the romance of ideas, of the intellectual brilliance of three unwitting mentors, and of the hopelessness of female ambition in the years before the feminist movement of the last three decades of the last century. And it is, in the end, a book that offers splendid proof that the models we once had are no longer the only ones before us.
Customer Reviews:
tragedy is what most marks us if we are thinkers ... .......2006-08-16
Since I took a graduate seminar course in women's memoirs in American literature, I have read several books by Heilbrun. As I was not going to specialize in autobiography/memoirs or in feminist theory, I read her more as a writer than a scholar or theorist, focusing more on how she says things than on what. In this regard, I enjoyed every book I read because her language was something unique. It is clear and concise, without being simple, authoratitive without being pedantic, seemingly aloof yet strangely persuasive. If passion is another name for talent, she is very, very passionate, but that passion is moderated with a unique kind of resignation (or perhaps, wisdom).
This book is not my favorite, and compared to other titles such as Writing Women's Lives, it does indeed gets slow and heavy here and there. There are parts where even those in the same line of work as Heilbrun's would go, "Who cares?" or "Why bother?" Yet, largely, it is accessible and *fun*. Read as an intellectual memoir, it is a story about how Heilbrun was gratefully influenced by three men, how she resisted and embraced their influence, and how she finally grew out of it. There are many interesting anecdotes coming from her encounters with these men (Barzun, Fadiman, and Trilling) and her life as a graduate student in the 50s at one of the most highly regarded universities in the US. Students of today would gasp at the nightmarish inconvinience of having only two copies of their papers, and painfully taking turns in reading other student's papers due to the lack of copies.
Heilbrun devoted a chapter to Diana Trilling, which wasn't her plan when he planned on the book. She was fascinated and gained admiration for her in the process of research for the book, and readers would clearly see why in the chapter on her. In sum, according to Heilbrun, Diana Trilling is a woman whose insights on her life come largely from feminism ("the most successful revolution of our century," Trilling herself called it), yet who was not herself a feminist. She accepted a life of belittlements from others, while having penetrating understanding of those belittlements.
Early in the book, Heilbrun notes that perhaps one of the most palpable influences she got from Lionel Trilling would be the notion that "tragedy is what most marks us if we are thinkers." This is what Trilling shares with Freud, and this is what Heilbrun shares with Trilling, despite her distrust of Freud, and to some extent, of Trilling as well. This comment comes after an anecdote about Trilling's inspiring lecture on Henry James, from which young Heilbrun took the idea that "the essence of literature was in the tensions of the thinking life." This part of the book is strangely moving, and makes me think hard about the interplay among "tension," "thinking life," "tragedy," and "literature." A small and not really an ambitious book, but contains much fun and insights.

Mix Up enviroment.......1999-04-21
One another great hing about this book is that you can mix up a little the enviroment the players are used to play. Getting Vampire and Werewolf players to play togueter was a great idea, except for the fact that the vampire players were complaining that the "Lupines" were kicking their asses, but it was fun anyway. It's a great book.
The little guys are remembered at last!!!.......1997-02-20
Its fantastic to finally have a source book for the "forgotten" characters... the social outcasts and eyesores. These characters are the most challanging to play and this author brings new depth to role playing a pirah. James Moore's constant tongue in cheek humor keeps the book interesting and enjoyable. The new information available makes creating a "socially unacceptable" character much easier and offers many new avenues to choose from
Book Description
The PIC microcontroller is enormously popular both in the U.S. and abroad. The first edition of this book was a tremendous success because of that. However, in the 4 years that have passed since the book was first published, the electronics hobbyist market has become more sophisticated. Many users of the PIC are now comfortable shelling out the $250 for the price of the Professional version of the PIC Basic (the regular version sells for $100). This new edition is fully updated and revised to include detailed directions on using both versions of the microcontroller, with no-nonsense recommendations on which is better served in different situations.

Good starter book for those interested in PICs.......2006-10-28
I bought the original edition of this book about 5 years ago, and it was instrumental in getting me started in PIC microcontroller programming and implementation. Although there are some errors throughout the book (someone commented that there are also errors in the new edition), and the hardware referenced is fairly dated (SPO256, for example, and some would argue the outdatedness of the PIC16F84), it's still a valuable source of information and reference. Browsing through the second edition, I see he's added PIC Basic "Pro" material, and filled out the chapters with more material specific to the chapter. The original edition was a good "hand holding" introductory tour through the use and function of a basic PIC microcontroller, and although I don't own the second edition yet, it looks to be more of the same, with a repeat of most of the original material.
Outdated and provides little useful information.......2006-06-22
I'm afraid I need to disagree with the professor's review. If you are at all interested in the PIC microcontrollers and use of PIC Basic you would be best served looking elsewhere for inspiration. John Iovine's book is poorly written in so many ways that even someone new to microcontrollers would find very little use for it. Aside from his writing style being somewhat confusing, this book is full of outdated information. With a publishing date of 2004 I was suprised to find so much information applied to applications and hardware from the 90's inside. Aside from this, which in and of itself is reason enough not to waste your time or money on it, he doesn't list any resources in his text. For example, he makes mention of serial LCD's, but doesn't provide any specific examples of vendors or models and makes claim that they all work the same, which is not true. His projects are the same basic beginners projects you can find all over the internet for free and are less descriptive than those you might find elsewhere. There isn't a single PCB design in the book and he demonstrates all of his projects with a breadboard. Most unfortunate, is the pictures he provides of the finished breadboards - they are taken at an angle, far enough away from the breadboard that not only could you not use the picture to validate your own breadboard design, you can barely tell what is what on the breadboard at all. On top of everything else, he explores only the PIC16F84 chip, which while one of the more popular chipsets ever produced by Microchip, is also outdated information since Microchip has since updated this to the PIC16F84A model and he doesn't cover any other chipset in any detail. One or two of his projects and examples show a different chipset in the schematic, but that's about it. His exploration of the BASIC language is no more or less descriptive than, say, the users guide of the PIC Basic language itself (which you can get for free). There are also many omissions and errors throughout the book, specifically as they apply to his projects. For example, his H-Bridge DC motor controller design is not smokeless (you could easily fry the PIC and/or other components in this design) and is missing several key components (like capacitors) that would prevent the design from working in a real world application. He also has a half a dozen or so shameless plugs throughout the book pointing you to 'other books he has written' to get more information - if this book is any example of what you might find in his other books, you'd be best to stay away from this author altogether. The cover of this book claims it is 'Completley updated and revised' - I guess this means the first edition was really horrible, the second edition is, in my opinion, simply not worth the read.
Excellent starting point.......2006-06-01
When I bought the previous edition of this book, I couldn't put it down. I had no idea how easy PIC BASIC was, and that you can get PIC chips for free!
Every project works and there is a thorough explanation in plain english as to how it works. The projects covered in this book are really very cool and I highly recommend it to anyone just getting into this field.
Excellent place to start with microcontrollers.......2005-12-17
This is a great book for learning a "beginner's basics" in microcollers. I give it four stars because of the misleading cover images of robots. There is nothing in the book about making a complete robot, but there are good basic microcontroller applications that could be used in a robot. In other words, there are PIC Basic programs where the reader can see real world applications while learning how to program and set up circuits.
OK great book!!! But???.......2005-07-28
This book is ok if want to build the robots explained in the book or useit to expand your knowledge. The reason I like this book is because he use's both the PICBASIC and PICBASIC PRO to program the robots. But it has too many errors and some of the projects are not fun enough to excite robot hobbyist at all. I wish he make another book which has more projects. Still the book is great!!!
