Book Description
Using Electronic Workbench to simulate digital laboratory experiments, this unique and innovative lab manual features an interactive approach that requires readers to think about and to analyze the results of the experiments in more depth than is customary in other lab manuals. The experiments involve logic gates and combinational logic circuits, arithmetic logic circuits, medium scale integrated (MSI) circuits, sequential logic circuits, and circuits that interface the digital world with the analog world for the acquisition of data as well as troubleshooting problems for each major area. The experiments include Materials Lists and Circuit Diagrams so that they may be done either with computer simulations or in a hardwired laboratory. Accompanying disks provide all of the troubleshooting circuits and all of the digital circuits needed to perform the experiments in Electronic Workbench. For those interested in digital electronics and Electronic Workbench.

What is the software version
Book Description
This unique and innovative laboratory manual helps readers learn and understand circuit analysis concepts by using Electronic Workbench software to simulate actual laboratory experiments on a computer. Users work with circuits drawn on the computer screen and with simulated instruments that act like actual laboratory instruments. Circuits can be modified easily with on-screen editing, and analysis results provide fast, accurate feedback. "Hands-on" in approach throughoutin both interactive experiments and a series of questions about the results of each experimentit is more cost effective, safer, and more thorough and efficient than using hardwired experiments. Uses MulitiSim to simulate dc and ac electric circuit experiments on a computer screen using simulated instruments to make circuit measurements, recreating a real laboratory environment. A materials list and circuit diagrams is included in each experiment so that the experiments can be used in a hardwired laboratory environment in addition to the computer simulations.
Experiment Theory sections contain all of the technical information needed to do the calculations and answer the questions. A series of circuits with faults is stored on the accompanying disk and is included at the end of many of the experiments. For the assistance in the study of Electric Circuits.

Great, but...........2007-08-05
This is a great book! The only "problem" that I found, is that it should cover a bit more such as transistors and some ICs. But, overall, this is a great book!

Top-shelf Wodehouse.......2004-07-21
A great collection of stories that do not involve my perennial favorites Bertie and Jeeves. I'm especially enamoured with Wodehouse's way of naming club members either Bean, Crumpet and Egg, or (as in Buried Treasure) after their drinks. Highly recommend for Anglophiles everywhere.
Laugh-out-loud funny!.......2002-03-30
This is an exceptional collection of Wodehouse's short stories. He hits a grand slam immediately with "Crime Wave at Blandings," which tells the hilarious tale of what happens when a senior citizen with a tendency toward nostalgia gets his hands on an air gun for the first time since his childhood. Wodehouse is the greatest when it comes to light-hearted stories that poke gentle fun at our human foibles. If you want to laugh out loud, buy this book!
Fun with an airgun........2002-01-20
Mix yourself a hot Scotch and lemon and dive in. Emsworth is at his finest when confronted with the horrific possibility that he may be forced to take The Efficient Baxter on as his secretary again. Also there is a Mulliner tale, 3 golf stories as related by the the Oldest Member and 3 Ukridge stories. Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge has as usual tried everything to raise a few quid -- including renting his aunt's house while she is away in Hollywood, training Battling Billson the prize-fighter and pawning his aunt's diamond brooch. The funniest is the Emsworth story, while the others seem more like unfinished sketches that Master Plum (Wodehouse) was toying with.
A really funny book and very entertaining!.......2001-09-17
I very highly recommend this book. It's very funny and entertaining. I'd give it more stars if I could. I really enjoy all of P.G. Wodehouse's books. In my opinion , this is one of his very best.
Wodehouse at His Best -- And No Jeeves in Sight!.......2000-11-22
This collection of short stories begins with one about the title character, Lord Emsworth, a constantly befuddled old man who only wants to putter away his time if only his energetic relatives would let him. Though not my favorite Emsworth saga, this one is excellently written and endlessly hilarious. All the other stories are similarly well done, but they all begin to meld together somehow. I would have preferred more variety in the approach. If you read this (and you should!), I recommend one story at a time, and allow some good space between stories. Use an episode perhaps as a palate cleanser between each of those long lugubrious novels you insist on reading. That way you'll get the max out of the book, and every story will remain distinctive.

Best book ever!!!.......2007-05-28
I have 2 main interests. Rock and ghosts. Not just ghost but i think graveyards are cool. So this book was perfect for me. This book taught me so much and i love reading it. It's awesome for anyone who is interested in music!!!!1
Stairway to Heaven.......2007-03-10
This made an excellant gift for a rock fan and someone that is somewhat of a historian and likes things like this...
A masterpiece....for any music fan........2006-01-25
Have you ever gone to see your favorite artist in concert only to go home somewhat upset because they didn't play this song or that song? Well,I thought I would be thinking that way when I purchased this book, thinking that it would not have the gravesite(s) of this artist or that artist or so on. WAS I WRONG!!! This is like a who's who of dead people of the music world. The book in no way caters to just one genre of music. It practically contains every dead artist from all genres of music. From country (Johnny Cash,Hank Williams) to rap (Jam master Jay,Eazy E) to classic rock (Brian Jones,Jimi Hendrix) to blues (Muddy Waters,John Lee Hooker) to punk (Sid Vicious,Johnny Thunders) to even Tejano (Selena),this book has it all. From members of the beatles to members of MC5 and from members of Lynyrd Skynyrd to members of The Ramones and The New York Dolls,no band is left out. There are roughly 100 artists in this 160 page book which includes artist and gravesite photos as well as the stories behind their deaths. No music fan is left out. It is a masterpiece worth buying. Although it contains no directions to getting to the sites,it still can also be used as the perfect travel guide for the rock n roll historian. Rock on!!!!!
Stairway to heaven.......2005-11-05
interesting and fascinating all at the same time. The photos were
wonderful and the text was clear. Highly recommend for both the browser and the reader
Rock's Legendary Book.......2005-10-17
This book is a great synopsis of well-known and some little known musical artists who have influenced our present and past music world.
It is well written and the photos are an added plus to this book.

Book Description
In this book, author Rosalie Schwartz uses the 1933 RKO-Radio Pictures production Flying Down to Rio to examine the interplay of technology and popular culture that shaped a distinctive twentieth-century sensibility. The musical comedy connected airplanes, movies, and tourism, ending spectacularly with chorus girls dancing on the wings of airplanes high above Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Hollywood fantasy capped three decades during which airplanes and movies engendered new expectations and redefined people's sense of well-being, their personal satisfactions, and their interpersonal relations. Wilbur and Orville Wright flew their airplane in 1903, at the same time that filmmakers began to project edited, filmed stories onto large screens. Spectators found entertainment value in both airplane competitions and motion pictures, and movie producers brought the thrill of aviators' antics to a rapidly expanding audience. Meanwhile, air shows and competitions attracted large crowds of tourists. Mass tourism grew as a leisure-time activity, stimulated in part by travelogues and feature films. By 1930, the businessmen who envisioned transporting tourists to their destinations by airplane struggled to overcome the movie-exaggerated association of flight with danger.
Schwartz weaves these threads into a story of human daring and persistence, political intrigue, and international competition. From Wilbur and Orville to Fred and Ginger, Schwartz's narrative follows the fortunes of aviation and movie pioneers and the foundations and growth of Pan American Airways and RKO-Radio Pictures, the two companies that came together in Flying Down to Rio.
By the end of the twentieth century, aviation, movies, and mass tourism had become powerful global industries, contributing to an internationally connected, entertainment-oriented culture. What was once unthinkable had now become expected.

Scholarly work on aviation developmental influences!.......2006-03-04
I am still halfway through this book but can tell you it's a worthy read if at times a little ponderous. I find the detail both good yet distracting and whilst it starts out looking as if it will ignore the Europeans that is more than remedied by the 2nd chapter, however one can't help feeling that the Wright Brothers get a generous serve - there is a viewpoint out there, originally shared by the Smithsonian, until mercilessly lobbied by the "Brothers", that Santos Dumont was the first to fly heavier than air and not the Wrights, Schwartz dodges this issue but it is an American view afterall. Whether I will have to revise this review will depend on how the Europeans are handled in subsequent chapters, for although Hollywood was no doubt a major factor in USA aviation development the Europeans especially the British (though not exclusiviely) do have a major claim to airmail driven development as well as rapid despatch of its Empire Administrators, none of which has anything whatsoever to do with entertainment and although the Europeans and Americans were not the good friends they are today, they both eyed each others activities if not with friendship then at least with competitive eyes (Short Brothers versus Sikorsky, Martin, Boeing or Boeing versus Airbus if you want a current example).
As you can tell a book to set the mind thinking, but in the end perhaps its the military aspects that really drove aviation until the jet age and economies of scale really set the final flare path alight.
Flying will never be the same.......2005-09-25
Flying Down To Rio is an amazing historical documentation on flying and it's social, political and recreational influence on our culture. We get on aircraft every day without realizing that there is some facinating background and history surrounding our ride. The text is accompanied by some terrific photographs that compliment this outstanding work.
Schwartz has done an great job of both research and writing in compiling this book. It may not be a book that interests everyone, but for many it will be a real treasure.
Well done.

Book Description
All these brilliantly beautiful, surprising images are out to fool your eye! For example, even though a shape has only two or three colors, the background can trick you into thinking there’s a rainbow of tints and shades. Or, the same grid of squares can look completely different depending on whether it has an outline or not. Plus: decipher “alien writing,” figure out whether the animal in a drawing is a pink flamingo or Indian elephant, and observe mystic spirals.
Customer Reviews:
You can't always tell a book by it's cover!.......2005-06-28
I have been a puzzle addict for over 50 years ,have a collection of over 500 'puzzle books',and am continually adding to it ;particularly with the help of Sterling for the last several years. They deserve a big thanks for all their efforts.
A quick thumb through, actually usually 30 seconds or less, and I either buy it ,or pass it by.This one looked pretty good ,so now I have it.
As always, with Sterling, the construction the paper quality ,illustrations and color are supurb.
As I started going through the book,I was really enjoying it but as I reached the mid point ,I became less enchanted with it.
Here's why.
While many of the puzzles were familiar to me from other books and puzzle makers, many were simply a re-do of old classics.Even that was OK.As a matter of fact the puzzle on pge 131 was a very different take on the Tangram; At least I don't recall seeing it before. Also the maze on page 133 was also a good twist on mazes. The construction puzzle on page 119 was also different. The vanishing birds on page is just a re-do of Sam Loyd,s vasishing chinese man puzzle that has been done as Leprechauns, trees ,animals, and you name it.
So why only 3 stars?
Many of the puzzles require cutting up the book,an absolute no-no to any book lover or making copies ,even transparencies;both black and white or color. Then there is the puzzle on page 60, a takeoff on a puzzle that is often sold as a jigsaw puzzle with a mylar coated cylinder included in with it.Then we get on page 152 one that requires 3-D glasses;like everyone just happens to have a pair in their hip pocket!
I hope I've made my point. This book should have come with separate pieces in a pouch or something like that;so they would be available to do the puzzles without a bunch of construction, negating the destruction of the book.At the very least ,there should have been a warning on the front cover. This is not a new idea and has been done many times before.
I am surprised the editorial reviews didn't pick op on this. The names of the two authors were unknown to me in the puzzle book field and they appear more to be into creating classroom aids. All the more so, this book would have been a much better product with the additions I suggest.
I think both young people in a class as well as adults would enjoy this great mix of puzzles; but if either a decision to save a small amount at publishing or just a lack of thought is the reason;what would have been a first class effort is just a so-so result.
the old adage certainly applies here:
"Anything worth doing is worth doing right."
A great collection of neat colorful illusions and puzzles.......2002-06-20
This is a fun and very original and easy to read book. You should see all the ways that colors and shapes can fool you. Really astonishing! At the same time, you'll discover a huge quantity of geometric illusions, paradoxical puzzles, impossible objects, etc... If you like Sam Loyds, you should get this book! I also suggest this book for class activities to develop maths and spatial sense.
Book Description
In the late 1990s, Rockford Lhotka wrote about how to create distributed, object-oriented Windows applications using the limited facilities of Visual Basic 6, COM, and DCOM. The introduction of .NET has motivated him to revisit those themes and revise his strategy. In this book, he explains how .NET changes what's possible, and demonstrates what he believes to be the best way to use it.
The book has three parts. In the first, the author analyzes logical and physical application architectures, exploring their effect on scalability, fault tolerance, and performance. In the second, he implements and documents a Visual Basic .NET framework for the creation of distributed, object-oriented applications that employ .NET technologies including remoting, serialization, and auto-deployment. This framework encapsulates functionality such as database access, transaction handling, and location transparency, which are inherited automatically by any applications created from it.
In the last part of the book, the author uses the framework to create a sample application, and demonstrates the ease with which it's possible to write Windows, web, and web services interfaces for the underlying objects.

Excellent Book for Architects.......2006-03-24
Rocky's book is a MUST HAVE!
His no-nonsense approach is straight forward and down to business. No fluff here, just PLENTY of meat.
His concepts are clear, precise and right on target.
Even if you are not currently design the next generation killer ENTERPRISE APPLICATION, his advise and knowledge are invaluable.
key words: INVALUABLE & MUST HAVE !
Excellent real-world solution in building n-tier application.......2006-01-06
I've read many books on building apps with vb.net. This one really hits the jackpot. The thing with other books are it only gives you how to use tools, while this one applies those tools into real world problem. It deals nicely with various real world issue in building n-tier apps. I like the way he make special notes on some stuff that needs attention.
If you are building real world n-tier apps, buy this book. I can't wait to have his new book on Business object with VB 2005.
useful information.......2005-09-19
I came to read this book AFTER having designed a framework of a company that has recently converted VB6 to VB.NET web apps with the keywork CLASS never used (just webforms and SQL Server client functions). Was interesting to see how many of the same concepts (such as the BaseBusinessObject having the "Fetch", "Insert", "Update", and "Delete" methods) were the author's version of the same design pattern. Did find some useful ideas, such as having the Criteria class declared as a nested class inside the business object class, and then using an instance of Criteria to specify the parameters on which to build a where-clause in SQL. Also, it illustrates a poor man's version of a rule based system ("BrokenRules") in which several asserts are performed and the broken rules of such assert fails contained in a list, for which, if not empty, the property IsValid returns false. I would not claim this book to be the answer to everything, nor would I say this is a great book, but it gave confidence and some new ideas for refinements for someone who has already implemented a similar framework, and it was useful to see another person's implementation.
Excellent, unique content on applying best SW practices.......2005-03-15
I don't know of any other author as dedicated as Rocky Lhotka in helping developers to most productively apply software engineering best practices to solve real-world problems. VB .NET Business Objects is the only text I have found that is successful in developing 100% of the instruction needed for a developer with a moderate to advanced understanding of OO development to become significantly more productive when developing enterprise solutions.
I award Rocky 6.0 out of 5 stars on his the .NET version of his text. (A previous edition covered VB 6.0 and an upcoming edition will address VB .NET 2.0.)
No single text can address all aspects of software development and this book far exceeds all or almost all others available. That being said (and without reducing the score I assign to Rocky's book), there are always improvements that can be made. Here are my recommendations for the next edition:
Readers who are new to OO development and who are using this text to understand best practices of applying OO techniques while they simultaneously learn OO basics from another source will find the text challenging. Rocky's book provides some basic OO instruction but is most beneficial to those with a fairly solid grasp of the underlying concepts. That statement is not intended to reflect negatively on the book, as no single book can address all needs.
One suggestion of how Rocky might expand the audience for his next edition, however, is to select a different case study for the book to follow. The current edition uses a Project Tracker case developed by Rocky for the book to illustrate the concepts he describes. Less experienced developers could gain more benefit from the book if Rocky selected a case study that was already described in a well-respected beginning-intermediate OO text. Rocky could focus on how to implement the case study using the CSLA .NET framework. Readers who are new to OO design could reference the detailed instruction in the corresponding text if they need a better understanding of the underlying OO concepts.
I am sure there are many case study options available for selection; I happen to like the POS case study used by Craig Larman in "Applying UML and Patterns: An Introduction to Object-Oriented Analysis and Design and Iterative Development, Third Edition."
With such an approach, Rocky could produce a volume that would be as beneficial to beginning developers as his current text is to intermediate and advanced developers. The level of support that Rocky (along with the large and responsive VB .NET BO community of readers) graciously provides would likely be significantly reduced if an existing text answered many readers' basic OO questions.
You must buy this book!.......2005-02-12
I have bought many book, most of them have been worthless. This is not one of them. I have read this book twice and it was worth it. The author actually responds to postings at his website. If you really want to think about what you are doing when you are creating business objects, You must buy this book. The material is somewhat complex and there were alot of time I did not understand how it worked. Once I got it to work I was very impressed. I am thinking about buying the book again, because my copy is so worn and so full of marks. When was the last time you bought a book twice. It is that good!
