2 out of 5 stars Provides only a superficial analysis of the TOEIC.......2001-06-12

Kaplan’s specialty is the GMAT and GRE exams. That is certainly clear when you work through their Essential Review for the TOEIC Exam. Out of all the TOEIC test preparation materials in print, this is one of the least effective books on the market. It gives a very superficial analysis of the TOEIC test, has a small number of practice exercises, and arranges everything on the page in a sloppy, confusing manner. Essential Review for the TOEIC does have some positives though. For example, the exercises in this book are not terribly written. They do somewhat approximate what you will find on actual TOEIC exam. In addition, Kaplan explains all of their answers in a clear and helpful manner. However, for (...), you get so little material that it is probably not worth the money. There is one practice test and a few practice exercises for each test section. The material in Essential Review for the TOEIC adds up to two practice tests, if that. That means you are paying (...) per test here, which is too much compared to other TOEIC test-prep books on the market. In addition, Kaplan’s book provides a fairly superficial analysis of the question types you will find on the TOEIC. It is nothing close to the analysis given in Peterson’s TOEIC Success. Finally, the presentation of Kaplan’s Essential Review for the TOEIC is messy to the point of distraction. The way the material is arranged on the page has an old time, pre-computer, even pre-twentieth century kind of feeling. If you can only buy one book for the TOEIC exam, I would recommend against Kaplan’s Essential Review for the TOEIC Exam (even if you can get it for (...) used). Go with Peterson’s TOEIC Success or ETS’ Official Test Preparation Guide rather than this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent preperation for TOEIC!.......2000-06-29

Kaplan has published a TOEIC prep. book that is up to its usual high professional standards. This book has been a great aid to all our students at the Naresuan University Language Centre. It is easy to use and understand. The material is well researched and the sample tests are quite close to the actual TOEIC. I strongly recomend this book.

              Book Description

With legions of fans being drawn to its inimitable style, Bizarro has become one of the country's fastest-growing syndicated cartoon panels since its launching in 1985. In this new collection, his fourth to date, Dan Piraro once again demonstrates an uncanny talent for making wildly startling situations even more extravagant. Notorious for his provocative and elaborately executed drawing style, Piraro is like a curious, mischievous child, lifting rocks and peeking around corners to reveal the secrets of the universe as he perceives them. It's a crazy, improbable world, and Glasnost Bizarro gives loyal readers (as well as unsuspecting ingenues) the chance to belly-laugh at the author's peculiarly skewed sensibilities.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One of his best.......2000-05-10

The title »Glasnost Bizarro« has absolutely nothing to do with the contents of this yet another collection of Dan Piraro's one-picture-jokes - it's just another sign of his strange humor... and it refers to a joke on the cover (front AND back) of the book...

Which IS one of his better collections, although not reaching the level of his earliest work!

Still, Piraro's Bizarro is in the class of Gary Larson, so if you don't know him, you definitely have to give it a shot.

              3 out of 5 stars well-drawn, funny.......2000-04-20

Dan Piraro's comics are something of an enigma to me. They are exceptionally well-drawn -- almost too well-drawn for a daily strip -- and very, very funny. Not as humorous as Gary Larson at his best, but well worth checking out. All the works in this book are one-panel, and a few of them are among Piraro's best.

For 6,557 miles, Chuck Klosterman thought about dying. He drove a rental car from New York to Rhode Island to Georgia to Mississippi to Iowa to Minneapolis to Fargo to Seattle, and he chased death and rock 'n' roll all the way. Within the span of twenty-one days, Chuck had three relationships end -- one by choice, one by chance, and one by exhaustion. He snorted cocaine in a graveyard. He walked a half-mile through a bean field. A man in Dickinson, North Dakota, explained to him why we have fewer windmills than we used to. He listened to the KISS solo albums and the Rod Stewart box set. At one point, poisonous snakes became involved. The road is hard. From the Chelsea Hotel to the swampland where Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane went down to the site where Kurt Cobain blew his head off, Chuck explored every brand of rock star demise. He wanted to know why the greatest career move any musician can make is to stop breathing...and what this means for the rest of us.

                  Customer Reviews:

                  1 out of 5 stars Klosterman=Hipster Jerk.......2007-09-18

I picked up this book after reading "Fargo Rock City", and I was still undecided about Klosterman as an author. This book cemented my opinion that Chuck Klosterman is an idiot. This book has nothing to do with the title, or even the supposed subject of the book.

This is supposedly about Klosterman's journey to places where famous rock stars died. He goes to these places, but his reaction everytime is the same. He doesn't care, he's unimpressed, he'd rather think, talk, and write about himself.

What this book shoud really be called is "I'm a Hipster Jerk Who Sucks With Women", because that is what you get. 275 pages of Klosterman explaining how he has three women, but can't decide between them, all the while talking about how he hates his life, and ripping on any band that has ever had anything good said about them (and proclaiming that Motley Crue is the best band ever). Don't waste your time unless you like guys who sound like eighth graders who think they know everything about everything.

4 out of 5 stars It's Only Rock and Roll.......2007-09-07

I got this book because it was recommended by a friend, and I have to tell you, it was one great recommendation. I could not put this book down. Chuck Klosterman (a writer for "Spin" magazine) sets off on a cross-country road trip following the pathways of rock and roll death. From the site where Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crashed to Kurt Cobain's hometown to the site where more than 90 Great White fans died in club inferno, Klosterman's journey is like taking a road trip with your best college friend, playing your favorite tunes and discussing why you love rock music, as well as endlessly analyzing your (all too often) failed relationships, and just seeing what America has to offer.

Klosterman is funny, engaging, witty, and a slightly more upbeat version of Dave Eggers (for those of you who loved his book, "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius"). Or maybe he's a slightly more melancholy Dave Eggers...you read the book and decide for yourself. A lot of Klosterman's journey focuses on three relationships, which distracts somewhat from the main rock and roll focus. Still, Klosterman has a great writing style and a depth of music knowledge that are an unbeatable combination. His music tastes may not agree with your own, but with 600 CDs piled into his car for this road trip, you're sure to find something about which you will agree with Klosterman. Despite the morbid theme for this road trip, I assure you, you won't soon forget the journey.

                  5 out of 5 stars Hilarious..........2007-09-06

I found this book absolutely hysterical! Like another reviewer said, you need to be a part of Klosterman's narrow audience in order to really "get" the humor. For instance, there is a part in the book where he relates each of his ex-girlfriends to a member of KISS. This makes sense completely if you are a KISS fan or are at least vaguely familiar with the members, but makes no sense if you aren't.

If you're a music fan who interprets the entire world through guitar-shaped goggles, Klosterman is for you.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great book IF............2007-07-05

So far I've read two books by Chuck Klosterman: "Fargo Rock City"; this one. And I've noticed that while his books get generally good ratings, here on Amazon, that some reviewers rate them really low. I think there is a reason for this: Chuck writes to a kind of narrow audience, and you're either part of that audience or you're not.

To best understand Chuck Klosterman's books you need to be a male Hard Rock fan, born between roughly 1952 and 1978. You also need to have some high school sports experience, maybe played basketball, football, baseball, hockey, or ran track. And you also need to be a bit of a nerd, at least in the eyes of women, so that you've had some rough dating experiences.

If you fit the mold, Chuck Klosterman is your humorist. I really had to laugh at his humorous take on high school football coaches; the life advice that he got from the old bar patron in Montana; his troubles with the women that he has dated; and the way that he can question and even make fun of the music that it is still obvious that he loves so much.

So if you've never been that much of a smoothy in your relationships with women; have played sports, and been a sports fan, but can still laugh a little at what goes on in the world of sports; and KISS, Def Leppard, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam still mean a lot to you, Chuck Klosterman is a genius humorist, and you will totally get what he's talking about. If these conditions don't apply to you, I'm not sure how well you will receive these books.

Another thing, maybe by the blurb on the back of the book jacket, you think this book is about Chuck Klosterman's pilgrimages to Rock N Roll death sites, like: the site of the Buddy Holly crash; Graceland where Elvis died; Kurt Cobain's suicide house; and whatnot... And while he mentions visiting these sites, to write an article for his employer at the time, the Rock magazine Spin, the incidents in this book are more about his journeys between the Rock N Roll death sites, and rememberences of his youth that come back to him during the long drives. So the stories are more about ex-high school/college girlfriends; ex-young adulthood girlfriends; crazy waiters/waitresses; bartenders and bar patrons; motel employees; gas station attendants met along the way; and the memories of school sports; school newspapers; and other things from the past. Then there are the musings on national monuments: "Why does anyone care about seeing the Washington Memorial?"; and wondering about the happenings in tourist towns: "Would you ever come to a Minnesota, lakeside tourist town thinking that you were going to find handmade, Tiawannese silk fabrics, yet this town of 1,500 has three stores that sell that. Imagine that?"

Hope this helps ya'll evaluate whether you want to read them or not.

                  1 out of 5 stars Snooze.......2007-06-21

"My thoughts are unoriginal," Chuck Klosterman states on page 73 (hardback). That was my conclusion by page 3.

Affecting a Kerouacesque randomness with Bangsian hipness, Klosterman grinds through a passionless, pretentious diary in which nothing of significance occurs. It's possible to write about nothing but oneself (Burroughs sure could) but a unique voice and a lifetime of living, not to mention serious literary skill, is required to pull it off. Not Klosterman. Well, I never cared much for the stuff in Spin, but at least that material, however slight and evanscent, is edited; this book, however, just runs and runs ... like a forgotten motel room faucet.

                  Oh, yay.

                      Book Description

The 1960s was a decade of contrasts. It had the Summer of Love, but it also witnessed the assassinations of three American leaders. It fulfilled President Kennedy’s promise of successfully landing a man on the moon but also saw the beginning of the ultimately disastrous Vietnam War.

It gave us beach tunes on one end, psychedelic songs to trip to on the other, and in between heralded the British Invasion. Now you can look back on and celebrate all the events and fads from the 1960s with Stuart Shea’s trivia-laden The 1960s’ Most Wanted: The Top 10 Book of Hip Happenings, Swinging Sounds, and Out-of-Sight Oddities from Potomac's Most Wanted™ series.

Lucky Charms cereal was introduced in 1964 with more than fifty percent sugar, the first cereal to pass the halfway point in sugar content. In 1967, Louis Washkansky was the recipient of the first-ever heart transplant. In 1961, the entire U.S. Olympic figure skating team was killed in an airplane crash in Belgium. And in 1965, with the now-classic songs "Turn, Turn, Turn," "Satisfaction," "My Girl," and "Yesterday" debuting on the airwaves, the Grammy for best rock-and-roll recording instead went to Roger Miller’s "King of the Road"! Stuart Shea gives you dozens of top-ten lists with entertaining and remarkable trivia on historic events, political revolutionaries, great moments in space, forgotten but once-popular television shows, fashion breakthroughs, great sports stories, and the best and worst of the silver screen. It’s been said that if you remember the 1960s, you didn’t live through them. Whether you lived through them or not, you can remember them in style with The 1960s’ Most Wanted™.

                      Book Description

In the tradition of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Ecco is one of the greatest sleuths of our time, a mathematical wizard who uses logic and computer programming to solve crimes, find treasures, and explore space. Join his team, expand the frontiers of your knowledge, and match wits with him on intriguing cases like "The Virus from the Spy" and "The Secrets of Space" and "The Caribou and the Gas." The puzzles collected here require no formal background beyond arithmetic and elementary algebra—just lively curiosity and keen intelligence. With thirty-six illustrated cases organized around eight major mathematical themes (from Combinatorial Geometry and Geography to Ciphers and Secrecy) this book will encourage you to use your mind and your computer in ways you never previously imagined.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting puzzles, but who's Dr. Ecco?.......2004-06-12

Presumably, this collection of mathematical puzzles is for fans of one Dr. Ecco whose life is full of adventures. For people not familiar with the character, the book appears very dull and the characters contrived, uninteresting, and, well, kind of lame. The narration is a little over the top, but all in all, the book is not terribly written.

The puzzles on the other hand are pretty interesting. Ranging from solving codes through organizing buildings in space to transporting monkeys, the puzzles are a nice way of teaching mathematical concepts. As the descriptions of the puzzles and Dr. Ecco's solutions thereof progress, the reader is asked to participate on different levels in solving of the puzzles. Cybernovices and cyberexperts can learn about math in a fun way.

I recommend this book for those interested in solving puzzles of any kind who are not detered by corny storylines. If you are not sure whether you'd like this book, I recommend you flip through it at a book store to make sure.

5 out of 5 stars Ecco strikes again.......2003-07-17

As a fan of Ecco's Puzzling Adventures, I was eager to take a look at his cyberpuzzles. Ecco and his protege Shasha have done it again, and I recommend this book to anyone looking for interesting, challenging, thoughtful problems.

The book is a fun and intersting read on its own, but I have also drawn on the book's puzzles in teaching (a course on logic and discrete math).

It's very cool to have a book that can entertain and educate at the same time! Looking forward to Ecco's further adventures.

This is an excellent book if you are starting to learn how to design Web pages. Make sure you follow each step. It is an excellent step by step book, which also shows pictures to make sure you are in the right dialog box, etc.

I just substituted my own files for the ones named in the book and had my web page up and running in just a few days. I liked the picutures of what to push on the screen. And I'm only up to the third chapter.

1 out of 5 stars NOT a good way to learn FrontPage.......2003-05-22

I bought this book to help me learn FrontPage, and I cannot recommend it. The step-by-step instructions have errors, which makes it frustrating for a beginner to complete the exercises (the book is structured around practicing with files that come on an enclosed CD-ROM). Moreover, the explanations of how the program works are woefully inadequate. Whether you want to learn by practicing or learn by understanding principles of web design, you will be thwarted.

A positive outcome of using this tutorial is that I was forced to figure out how to get around the mistakes in the exercises, so I did learn some things. I accomplished this by bugging people who know about computers for help. If I hadn't had anyone to ask, I might have been stuck on the page layout chapter forever.

I'm trying to learn FrontPage quickly, and this book has wasted hours of my time. BEWARE!

I'm giving this book a one because I'm in a bad mood right at the moment.

First let me say that I am a web designer, and have been building sites for several years. I've used Frontpage before, but have been using Dreamweaver for the past 3 years.

Anyway, I'm teaching a class on Frontpage, and was looking for a book to use for the class. This isn't it.

Chapter 11 on publishing your site covers everything except publishing to a remote server from your local machine (which is the most common way to publish). It finally covers publishing on the next chapter entitled "Managing Your Site", but unfortunately the instructions aren't even close to what is available in FrontPage 2002. Evidently they were using a pre-release version of the software. Try going through the instructions on p.279 ????? "Views Bar" "ServerAdmin" "Web Folders" icon?????? I had to glance at the cover of the book to make sure I hadn't accidently picked up a book on FP 2000 by mistake.

I haven't really explored the book very thoroughly, so it might be a decent book, but just from looking at a few different topics I'm ready to toss it already.
