Book Description
In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, many private employers in the United States enacted fetal protection policies that barred fertile womenthat is, women who had not been surgically sterilizedfrom working in jobs that might expose fetuses to toxins. In Fetal Rights, Women's Rights, Suzanne Samuels analyzes these policies and the ambiguous responses to them by federal and state courts, legislatures, administrative agencies, litigants, and interest groups. She poses provocative questions about the implicit links between social welfare concerns and paternalism in the workplace, including: are women workers or wombs? Placing the fetal protection controversy within the larger societal debate about gender roles, Samuels argues that governmental decision-makers confuse sex, which is based solely on biological characteristics, with gender, which is based on societal conceptions. She contends that the debate about fetal protection policies brought this ambiguity into stark relief, and that the response of policy-makers was rooted in assumptions about gender roles. Judges, legislators, and regulators used gender as a proxy, she argues, to sidestep the question of whether fetal protection policies could be justified by the biological differences between women and men. The fetal protection controversy raises a number of concerns about women's role in the workplace. Samuels discusses the effect on governmental policies of the ongoing controversy over abortion rights and the debates between egalitarian and relational feminists about the treatment of women at work. A timely and engrossing study, Fetal Rights, Women's Rights details the pattern of gender politics in the United States and demonstrates the broader ramifications of gender bias in the workplace.

A classic.......1997-10-01
few people have read Babcock, those who have know that he is one of the finest outdoor writers ever. This is a book you will read over and over. I give this book to friends and particularly children of friends. In a society increasingly intolerant of hunting this book teaches a subtle message of tolerance without being overtly aggressive. This book will touch your heart and send you to the store for more Babcock.

awesome.......2007-01-05
great book, the author answer questions too. broken down into easy to understand exmaple
Comprehensive.......2007-01-04
I am an audio engineer. I have been recording bands into computers for over 10 years now. I still learned a bit from this book. If you have Sonar 5 (and unless you are hitched to pro tools I dont now why you wouldnt) you need this book!
I simply had no idea how easy it was to do fade ins and fade outs on clips for instance. Or how powerful envelopes were.
My favorite nugget was learning the difference of trim vs volume in Sonar.
(trim is pre effects/eq, volume is post fx/eq).
I just got Sonar 6 power!
cant wait!
A beginner's Guide.......2006-03-19
This book is meant for anyone who is starting with Sonar. It starts with some bare basics that, in my opinion, are useless since anyone using Sonar will already be VERY familiar with digital audio basics. All those pages could have been dedicated to more advanced stuff. There is a serious need for ADVENCED level books for serious and dedicated musicians... For Sonar users, you better be not recording nursery jingles.... its for advanced production..
BUT, there is tons of valuable info for beginners, and some useful tips for even advanced users... Overall value of this book is medium.
Great reference material.......2006-03-10
The Power! Series of books have always stood out as great sources of information that go beyond the scope of user manuals, but yet retain "regular-folk" readability and utility. In this sense, "Sonar 5 Power!" is definitely a winner! The book begins with a general introduction and overview of both the software and hardware aspects of home recording, and ends with finalizing projects in different mediums, including CD, the Web, and others. The no-nonsense, non-technobabble writing style helps make digesting this much information not only palatable, but enjoyable as well, as Scott throws in humorous zingers every once in a while just to keep you on your toes!
If there was any shortcoming to this book, it would be that it contains TOO much information ...but that is not so much an issue with the book, as much as it is the scope of the topic itself, as Sonar 5 has a HUGE feature set which can be daunting to the home musician and even the professional alike. However, Scott is able to pull it all together in a clear concise manner which allows for easy discovery and access to the information he has presented. I also appreciate the fact that Scott goes beyond the "click here to do this" style of writing, which many (if not most) similar books religiously adhere to, but actually discusses the relevant theories and underlying concepts related to the various settings and actions he describes throughout the book.
I would consider this a definite "must have" Sonar 5 reference guide!
A must have book.......2006-02-10
If you are a Sonar user then this book is as essential as all the other gear in your studio.
If you are thinking about making the jump from Pro Tools or Cubase to Sonar for it's deeper feature set, this book will give you a guided tour of not only the application but also the superb plugins and soft synths that ship with it.
Since I've had this book I've used it as a reference during every single Sonar project I've completed.

When World War II segued into the Cold War and the American dream deflated a half-size, a dull-gray patina settled over cities across the U.S. As the urban landscape shifted and swelled, these changes crept into the collective psyche via the silver screen and a cinematic genre termed "film noir." Employing dramatic use of shadow, night scenes, and voice-overs--as well as frequent shots of jagged skylines, dark street corners, and hidden crannies--the style revealed the underside of American life struggling to be heard amidst the existential clamor in the streets. In Somewhere in the Night: Film Noir and the American City, novelist and poet Nicholas Christopher uses the city as a vehicle for exploring the world of film noir, treating the urban setting more like a universal character than a mere backdrop for human action. Alluding to pop culture, literature, bits of history, sociology, and, of course, countless films from the past 50 years, Christopher examines the genre and its history in an entertaining and imaginative style that flows like a seamlessly edited film.
Book Description
Starting with the classic Out of the Past, Christopher takes us on the grand tour of the great film noirs. With style and humor, he identifies the genre's central motif — “The city as labyrinth is key to entering the psychological and aesthetic framework of the film noir” — and goes on to analyze more than three hundred films from 1940 to the present. Imbuing the language of film with the lyricism so praised in his novels, Christopher draws from his vast knowledge of literature to explore the genre's numerous influences. (Although it was a French critic who coined the term “film noir,” Christopher argues that Americans had been shooting films in the genre years even before the term was invented.) Citing cultural, social, and historical influences from all over the world, he effortlessly guides us through the labyrinth.
This edition includes a new afterword and expanded filmography, making this bold and thoroughly researched book more relevant and comprehensive than ever.

Elaborate Exploration of Classic Noir's Urban Jungle........2004-12-16
"Somewhere in the Night" is a treatise on film noir focusing on the characteristics of the post-WWII urban environment which spawned and defined the style. Novelist and poet Nicholas Christopher draws on a wider variety of sources to explain film noir than most film theorists do, including social pundits, historians, artists, and film critics. The discussion of film noir's influences goes so far beyond the traditional expressionism and post-War conditions that the connection is sometimes dubious, but always interesting. "Somewhere in the Night" almost overlooks the first 5 or so years of film noir, picking it up as the style peaks, in the mid-1940s. Each of the book's 8 chapters discusses a characteristic of the Noir City, and most include in-depth analysis of a few films that exemplify that quality. Most discussion is of classic film noir until the last chapter, which is dedicated to neo-noir. Readers will benefit from having some knowledge of film noir theory and history before embarking on this book, since the author presents an elaborate and personal picture of the social circumstances into which film noir emerged but doesn't cover the basics. "Somewhere in the Night" is a thoughtful dissertation for film noir buffs, by a film noir buff. The films mentioned below are not by any means the only films discussed, but the ones which receive exhaustive treatment.
Chapter 1, "Into the Labyrinth", introduces the reader to the literal and figurative urban labyrinth, a man-made web of treachery, which the heroes of film noir are compelled to navigate. "Out of the Past" (1947) and "Kiss Me Deadly" (1955) get in-depth analysis. Chapter 2, "Night and the City", discusses how the aftermath of WWII -the fears of the nuclear age, the paranoia of the Cold War, and the disillusionment of veterans- influenced film. Chapter 3, "Postcards from the Ruins", analyses 3 films that feature Americans in devastated European cities: "Berlin Express" (1948), "The Third Man" (1949), and "Night and the City" (1950). Chapter 4, "Office Buildings and Casinos", explores the increased sense of isolation produced by technologies and the corporate "rat race", reflected in characters' gravitation to omnipresent office buildings or casinos. 3 office work films are analyzed: "Forces of Evil" (1948), "The Big Clock" (1948), and "The Blue Gardenia" (1953), as well as 4 casino films: "Dead Reckoning" (1947), "Criss Cross" (1949), and "The Shanghai Gesture" (1941), and "Gilda" (1946). Chapter 5, "Grafters, Grifters, and Tycoons", discusses money as the foundation of the noir city, manifested as artwork, gangsters, or political corruption. Films analyzed are "The Street with No Name" (1948), "T-Men" (1947), "The Set-Up" (1949), and "Caught" (1949). Chapter 6, "The Dark Mirror: Sex, Dreams, and Psychoanalysis", talks about noir's sexual obsessions, previously not depicted in film, the femme fatale, and Freudian psychoanalysis in cinema. "Gun Crazy" (1950), "Nightmare Alley" (1947), "The Accused" (1949), and "Cat People" (1942) are analyzed. Chapter 7, "Black and White in Color", talks about the symbolic use of color in color film noir, going back to 1945's "Leave Her to Heaven". Chapter 8, "Paint It Black", is about neo-noir. The failure of re-made classic noirs and the success of original material and never-before-adapted pulp novels are discussed, with analysis of "The Usual Suspects" (1995). There are 2 Selected Filmographies in the back of the book, 1940-1959 and 1960-1997, both in alphabetical, not chronological, order.
Not Just the Usual Film Noir Suspects.......2002-12-08
This isn't the perfect book on film noir, but it is very interesting because Christopher touches on films that don't get discussed in a lot of books on film noir.
Chief among these are two Val Lewton horror films, Cat People and The Seventh Victim. It is nice to see someone discussing Lewton from a film noir perspective. Also, Christopher left me burning to see Breakdown, a 1965 film dealing with a scientist's mental crisis that he makes sound fascinating.
He also does a good job talking about more famous noirs, particularly Criss Cross, which he examines from the Dan Dureyea character's perspective. That brings a fresh approach to his discussion of this classic film noir.
This should not be anyone's first book on film noir, but it takes interesting positions and makes the reader look at things differently. Recommended for the person deeply into noir.
Livre gris.......1999-01-07
Especially in the early going, the book suffers from cloyingly pretentious prose and laborious plot summary, but eventually Christopher gets around to saying some interesting things about the genre. The book is a perfectly imperfect illustration of the difficulty in finding a middle ground between academic and popular writing. Still, worth having if only for the extensive filmography.

well presented explanations.......2007-05-17
[A review of the 8th EDITION, that was published in late 2006.]
Stallings takes the student reader through an extensive introduction to current computer networking. Focusing naturally on TCP/IP, as the Internet is the largest computer network in the world. He shows how TCP/IP can be related to the theoretical 7 layer OSI model. The 5 layers of TCP/IP have proved to be well adequate to this date.
En route, he provides very simple analogies to the protocol stack, as this sometimes gives students grief. One analogy is for the physical layer to be mapped to a telephone line. Then on one side, there is a stack for ordering pizza - consisting of a guest at a hotel, a host and a telephone. The other stack has the pizza cook, the order clerk and a telephone. Here, we see a 3 [or 4] layer stack, that is readily understandable. (It's easier to see the structure in the book's diagram.] Well, if you can follow this, then TCP/IP is not so different.
The book also explains various multiplexing methods, like frequency division or time division, without drowning the student in maths. The treatment is qualitative, and does not replace a full course in communications theory.
The discussion on routing, however, while also qualitative, is closer to actual implementations. The routing strategies can be quite adequately understood at the level given in the text.
There is one chapter devoted to wireless networks [ie. for cellphones]. Given the still strong rise in cellphone usage in developing countries, this chapter might well be expanded in future editions of the book.
WiFi is covered, but not WiMax. Well, it is still early days for deployment of the latter, whereas WiFi's popularity is established.
Interesting stuff........2007-04-14
most interesting part of this book was adsl, cable, vdsl because our family are using FastAccess DSL(adsl with 1.5 megabyte patch)from Bellsouth(which is merged with At&T).
A Good Resource.......2007-01-10
This book does not cover as many topics as I would have liked, but it is very current and appears to be accurate. Stallings can be a bit dry.
A+ in the NW and Data Comm hard to find books........2005-09-26
The subject of Networking and Data communication is hard to teach and the good books are also hard to find.
For anyone interested in the details of Networking and its mathematical and logical scales, there is no other book that represents this wide subject in an easy to read, understand and comprehend the subject. Although this is only my second required textbook in the Networking and Data communication, one undergrad and now grad school, it is my ...probably 10th book to read/use as a reference in my daily tasks.
All or partial of the text might be presented as grad level course or subject, but it is presented in a simple way. Go ahead, read it...you buy it or borrow it at the local library you won't be disappointed.
TL
For CE/EE users only!.......2005-07-26
This book is great if you are a CE/EE and want to get into all the little details around network protocols and how the hardware talks to each other. As a CS major (and Principal Software Engineer at my company) I have never had to go to the level this book pushes things at and it reminded me of where the computer industry was back in the early 70's. Many of the problems talk about teletypes and "high speed 2400 baud terminals" like they were developed just the other day.
For CS and MIS majors this book is a bummer with way too much detail and information on things that you will probably never use in your lifetime. I was a network analyst for Sun Microsystems for 9 years and never needed to know the things at the level they are in this book.
The exercises in this book vary from the incredibly simple to the all but impossible. Unfortunately the author neglects to show you how to do the problems in all but a few instances leaving the students to reinvent the wheel trying to figure out something that should be taught to them instead. I found most of the exercises very frustrating with the lack of examples and worked out material that one expects from a good text book. This problem could almost be overlooked if there was a student guide to go along with it that had the even (or odds!) worked out completely so you would know how the problem works. But no luck for the hapless CS student who has to slog through this book. I'm presently in a search for a Schaums outline or a study guide for this book in an effort to decode the exercises. Sorry for the bad news.
