                              Book Description

Based on a unique comparative analysis of the education and work experiences of those who lived through the political and labor market changes of the transition to post-communism, the authors argue that the social polarizations and erosion of the traditional "dual system" of vocational education and training in Eastern Germany may portend the future for the West. The issues raised have considerable resonances with the problems and contradictions which have beset British education, training, and labor market policy over the last decade.

                                      Book Description

The SUZUKI METHOD of Talent Education is based on Dr. Shinichi Suzuki's view that every child is born with ability, and that man is the son of his environment. According to Dr. Suzuki, a world- renowned violinist and teacher, the greatest joy an adult can know comes from developing a child's potential so he/she can express all that is harmonious and best in human behavior. Students are taught using the mother-tongue approach. Suzuki Piano School Materials include: Piano Books (Vol. 1-7) * Cassettes (performed by Meiko Miyazawa, Vol. 1-4) * William Aide Performs Suzuki Piano School (Cassettes & Compact Discs, Vol. 1-7) * Haruko Kataoka Performs Suzuki Piano School (Cassettes & Compact Discs, Vol. 1-3) * Valery Lloyd-Watts Performs Suzuki Piano School (Cassettes and Compact Discs Vol. 1-7). Suzuki Method Core Materials available for piano, violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute, harp, guitar, and recorder.

5 out of 5 stars Good method of building knowledge.......2007-05-07

I quit Suzuki piano as a child (didn't like my teacher, didn't like learning notes), but recently took it back up again. I now understand the value of Suzuki--and wish my first teacher had embodied what the method is all about. I am currently teaching myself, but see how the use of both hands and chord usage in progressing songs is very valuable in the learning process. What they teach you in the building/base songs transfer easily to more complex songs and classic pieces--and the pieces are all very nice--I recommend ordering the CD/tape to learn, as learning by ear is just as valuable as learning to read at this stage--I think they go hand in hand--and memorizing the song from the CD then being able to translate it onto the piano is very rewarding. I'm now on the second book...looking forward to the third! I was able to easily branch out to other piano books based on my foundation knowledge from the Suzuki method. That said, I did supplement it with some theory (as I don't have a teacher, and these books rely on a teacher for that aspect). I recommend Humphries book for theory--with internet reading as a supplement! Hanon exercises are very helpful, too.

4 out of 5 stars Great Piano Training Method.......2005-09-13

I bought this book for "nostalgia:" I just picked up a keyboard and wanted to play the songs I grew up on in my Suzuki piano lessons. It's funny how the memories come flooding back - how I got terribly sick of that monstrous 8 page Sonata in the middle, but loved the last song "Gigue," etc. And now that I don't have to practice for a teacher, I have great fun just relearning the ones that I truly enjoyed.
Most people aren't going to buy this book out of the blue without a history of Suzuki piano, but if you do, be forwarned that it's reasonably advanced, not beginner level: I don't think I reached it until about 6 years into my piano career.
But the music is printed in good, legible text, and there are lots of fingering hints which are a rare find in "grown up" piano music.

I ordered this book thinking volume one. Volume one is for the beginner like my 3 years old son. Imagine my surprise when I received volume 7 which is very advanced... This Suzuki method is great but please be careful this is volume 7 not 1.

I started my 3 1/2 year old in this program and she is now five. She is playing unbelievably! This program is for everyone! Make sure you buy the companion cd or cassette with this. Also get Nurtued by Love, by Dr. Suzuki.

As it goes with all volumes of the Suzuki Piano Books, this one is no exception. Containing a slew of works from composers ranging from Clementi to Schumann, and inlcuding many more. As a current student, I find this book to be the best of all so far. All the pieces are relatively well-known by tune, and are easily learned by ear. (The fact that nearly all Suzuki Piano teachers skip the last song (Sonatina, by Mozart) really helps, because that song proved to be a difficult obstable for me). Along with the purchase of this book, you will need the Book 3 CD or cassette...and of course, a willing and optimistic teacher!

Delaware is, by their own definition, a "Japanese supersonic group [that] designs-rocks and rocks-designs." They also call themselves "Artoonists." Since 1993, the collaborative has displayed their retro-futurism across a range of contemporary products, including music CDs, CD-ROMs, commercials, magazines, T-shirts, websites, live shows, and mobile phones. Delaware is four: Masato Samata, tape recordist, vocalist, lyricist, composer, art director, and designer; Aya Honda, bassist, vocalist, composer, and designer; Morihiro Tajiri, guitarist, bassist, drummer, vocalist, composer, and recordist; and Yoshiki Watanabe, guitarist, vocalist, sound programmer, phone ringer, and composer.

AEG's D20 Toolbox is, literally, a book of tables. These tables cover everything from wilderness encounters to what type of tree you might find in a tropical forest or even what type of NPC a character will randomly encounter in a castle - all of the little details a DM might not initially think of but that might be necessary to create. The tables can either be used directly (DM rolls 1d20 as the players wander a castle to determine which NPC they encounter) or to help inspire a DM during the design process. In either case, the tables are extremely useful, and active DMs will time-and-again find this book to be one of the most valuable in their library.

The only flaw in this book is that not all of the tables are properly explained. For example: a table detailing herbs that can be found in a specific region does not give game-term explanations for what the herbs can be used for (EX: Table 1-17 has Milkweed listed as #17. What sort of potions can milkweed be used for? Is it a poison? The DM will have to do additional research to find out). If these details had been supplied, I would have given the product five stars.

A very useful book for the harried DND 3.0 GM.
IF you like charts for when you are stymied for an idea, this is it. A plethora of data-packed D20 charts for NPC's, cities, towns, encounters (a little weak there - I am waiting for the book of encounter tables from Necromancer Games)
(I am not sure if it is compatible with 3.5, though as I am just buying the new books)

Creating Web pages isn't just for nerds anymore--far from it. You can't get far in any hobby without participating in its Web community; even the smallest businesses need good-looking, functional Web sites. Those facts mean you must be able to do your own site-building work, and Creating Web Pages for Dummies exists to share the skills you need to learn. This book goes a long way toward explaining Web publishing to newcomers to the field. It is not, however, much of an introduction to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) or any other site development language, and you'll soon find yourself wishing for more information on the low-level code that makes your pages look and act the way they do.

Instead of focusing on HTML (see Elizabeth Castro's excellent HTML 4 for the World Wide Web for that), this book emphasizes Web services (such as America Online and GeoCities) that will help you publish your pages, as well as page-design software (such as Microsoft FrontPage Express and Netscape Composer). Coverage is generally too basic--the logic is that if you're thinking about publishing your own Web pages you don't need step-by-step instructions on how to enter body text into FrontPage Express. General advice is good, however, and prospective page creators can learn a thing or two about good page design from the authors' advice. --David Wall

Publishing services, page-design software, and the bare essentials of HTML are covered, as are the special considerations of publishing for WebTV and dealing with diverse browser types.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.......2007-01-19

This is a great book for the person just getting started in thinking about putting up a web site.

The basic concept here is to use a fairly minimal amount of HTML, which he teaches you, and then one of the hosting services such as GeoCities, Google or AOL to get your site up and running. All in all, he presents an excellent description of what you need to think about, what technologies you need to understand, and the various tools that are available to assist in the construction of the site.

The intent of this book is to enable to get a site up and running, fairly quickly (He says in a day, I think he is a bit optimistic, plan on a weekend, maybe even a three day weekend.) but only after having thought a lot about the various aspects.

Then in chapter 18 he talks just aenough about things like JavaScript, database connectivity, cascading style sheets and more to let you know that you've barely scratched the surface.

An excellent place to get started.

5 out of 5 stars After you create your web page, then what?.......2006-07-30

This is a great starter book, but once you get your web site designed, then what? I wanted to know more about hosting services and costs, etc. Then found another title on here called "The Complete Web Hosting Kit Pro." This is a complete kit that lets you host your web site on your own PC for free. Comes with everything you need... instructions and software to host your site on your PC at home or at work. I recommend both this book and the web hosting kit.

                                        2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2005-05-30

If you are looking to obtain a basic knowlege of web programming, then this is not the book for you. I wanted a basic guide, but the author managed to create a book that is TOO basic. Yes, I was able to get my first website up on the internet, but it doesn't DO anything. For that, I'll need to buy another book.

3 out of 5 stars Ok if considered in the big picture.......2005-02-22

As those of us in the web design business know, creating a successful website is 10% web page creation and 90% business smarts. It's often misunderstood that making web pages is the hard work. This book is really well written, but must be considered in the big picture of web commerce.

I hate nothing more than to see busy business folks spending valuable days struggling with how to make their website actually work for them. So buy this book, if not for anything but to know what your web designer is talking about.

But remember that it takes more to succeed on-line.
