Book Description
Scroggie's Foundations is a classic text for anyone working with electronics, who needs to know the art and craft of the subject. Based on experience since the dawn of the electronic age, and updated in regular editions over 60 years, it covers both the theory and practical aspects of a huge range of topics from valve and tube technology, and the application of cathode ray tubes to radar, to digital tape systems and optical recording techniques.
Since Foundations of Wireless was first published over 60 years ago, it has helped many thousands of readers to become familiar with the principles of radio and electronics. The original author Sowerby was succeeded by Scroggie in the 1940s, whose name became synonymous with this classic primer for practitioners and students alike. Stan Amos, one of the fathers of modern electronics and the author of many well known books in the area, took over the revision of this book in the 1980s and it is he, with his son, who have produced this latest version.
The flavour of this book remains unchanged. Its original aim was to be 'non-mathematical in treatment' and be an 'elementary textbook'. With the use of example and analogy, the field of electronics is covered in depth with a lightness of touch not usually found in technical work.
In this latest edition, Foundations provides much more than just the basics. Not only has the book been reset and revised throughout, but also new sections on digital technology, and storage and recording, have been added. This book has always been a companion and guide for those involved in electronics, from the early days of radio to the latest digital revolution.
Updated classic including valve technology
New information on data storage and digital electronics
Based on experience since the dawn of the electronic age, and updated in regular editions over 60 years

What to Do When the Doctor Says t' Diabetes.......2005-08-25
This was the most insightful and informational and inspirational book on Diabetes. Having a mother with type 2 diabetes, I am always searching for new information and guidance. Healthly eating, exercise, and mental strength -- thank you! And knowing the facts - so important. This book truly guided me to help my Mom and prevent me (hopefully) from getting this disease. Thank you Ms. Yu.
Great Reference Information!!!.......2005-08-25
I found this book to be extremely well-written. It's easy to read and understand, whether you are a layperson or a medical professional. The technical terms are extremely handy when dealing with a health care professional. I also liked the fact that Ms. Yu includes so many personal stories - gives the reader something to identify with. In the back of the book there are a lot of websites, addresses, and phone numbers for Diabetes organizations. The glossary is also a nice touch. This is a must-have for anyone who has Diabetes or whose family has a history of Diabetes.

great inspirational messages.......2002-03-22
Great thoughts from well-known people from around the world. I would have liked to have seen more biographical information on each person, though. Great variety. Each thought is hand-written by the contributor, and opposite each letter is a biography of the writer of that letter. This heartfelt collection explores the important lessons offered by some of the sports world's best-known athletes and coaches, as they share insights on leadership, excellence, teamwork, and victory. Here are page after page of memorable quotes from Yogi Berra, Nadia Comaneci, Chris Evert, Wayne Gretzky, Florence Griffith Joyner, Grant Hill, Bela Karolyl, Tara Lipioski, Steve Young, and many more, all handwritten and signed on their personal stationery, and accompanied by a brief description of career highlights and biographical facts. Customer Reviews:
Formulaic series of messages from athletes.......2007-07-14
Athletics tends to be the most cliche-ridden area of human endeavor and the quotes appearing in this book reinforce that thought. It is a collection of a brief synopsis of one of the greatest athletes of the century is presented followed by a quote from that athlete. Since the synopsis is at most a long paragraph, there is very little background presented, so there is little in the way of context for the quote. Which really is not a major detriment, nearly every one of the quotes is so formulaic that you could have swapped them around randomly without a great deal of loss of meaning or confusion.
Excellent book -- not just for athletes........1999-06-19
In this book, outstanding athletes share their words of wisdom. I like the fact that Lorne Adrain gives a synopsis of each athlete's background. Therefore, the book is educational and inspirational at the same time. I gave this book to my brother for his birthday --- He doesn't like to read but read every word of this book. Great gift.
Nice Complement To Adrain's First Book.......1999-05-20
I liked Lorne Adrain's first book ("The Most Important Thing I Know") and am very glad to see this new addition! It's great! The quotes from some of the best known (and some lesser known) sports heroes are compelling!
Fantastic Customer Gift.......1999-05-14
We have used Adrain's other book (The Most Important Thing I Know) as a gift for customers attending a technical presentation that our company gave. This book looks to be another opportunity -- and very inexpensive (comparitively).
Excellent Motivational Book !!!.......1999-05-13
Another great book of very motivational quotes from well known sports legends and heros.
Book Description
A fascinating memoir featuring never-before-told stories from Beatles recording engineer Geoff Emerickthe industry legend who made music history by crafting the groundbreaking sound of the group's most famous records, including Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, and Abbey Road
Geoff Emerick was only fifteen years old when he began working with the Beatles as assistant engineer for their early classics I Want to Hold Your Hand and She Loves You. Incredibly, at the age of nineteen, he was promoted to full engineer, taking the helm for the group's groundbreaking album Revolver. Ten months later, he joined forces with the Beatles for the recording of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, hailed by Rolling Stone as the greatest album ever made. In their constant quest for experimentation and new soundsand despite the technical limitations of the pre-digital ageEmerick developed a slew of innovative recording techniques, many of which are still in use today.
In Here, There and Everywhere, Emerick tells his story for the first time, taking the reader through the hallowed (though somewhat dingy) corridors of Abbey Road Studios to give rare insights into the Beatles' unique creative processes and personalities and provide a behind-the- scenes look at how the greatest band of all time made their greatest records. As Emerick describes the Beatles' transformation from wide-eyed Liverpool teenagers into tour-savvy professionals, he provides a startling picture of the Fab Four. Fascinating and moving, Here, There and Everywhere illuminates the creative tensions within the band that fueled their early success, but would ultimately lead them to record in separate studios while the partnership was disintegrating.
We all owe some debt to Geoff Emerick's self-effacing work as an engineer and producer . . . there is very little that any group of scruffy musicians can throw at him that he cannot put into some kind of good sonic order. I feel fortunate to have worked with him.

Customer Reviews:
He should know; he was there.......2007-09-28
Few accounts of history are more accurate than the first-hand kind, and that is what we have with Mr. Emerick's outstanding book. To his credit, this thoroughly British gentleman focuses on what he actually saw versus what is commonly known about the Beatles. His tone is respectful, but he does not shy away from saying what he thinks based on what he saw and how he was treated. Mr. Emerick went on to engineer and produce some great acts, which I hope are the subjects of a future book. And consider this: When I was 19, I was just learning to tie my shoes. He was engineering the "Revolver" album!
Class Act.......2007-09-17
I couldn't put this book down....what a fascinating first hand account of one of the most infuential musical experiences in modern history. I think you will find it particularly interesting if you write and record music, as Geoff's recollections are incredibly detailed and specific. It's truly unbelievable that he could remember so much of what happened in such picture perfect detail, and it is a lasting testament to critical and often unsung heroics of the worlds best audio engineers. Howard Massey did an excellent job helping Geoff make this material completely accessible to the lay person and fan as well. When I proposed to my wife in 2002 I wrote a symphonic piece and surprised her at Capitol Records in Studio A, where we recorded it live (I proposed afterwards). While they were mixing the music we took a tour of Capitol Records, and when we returned there was a gentleman in the studio playing the most beautiful music on the grand piano. We listened for awhile, then entered to studio and spoke with him for almost half an hour. What a lovely man, and what great music. That was Geoff Emerick. Perhaps someday we will hear you on the other side of the glass young man:)
Thanks so much for sharing your amazing life with us Geoff. As I sit at my grand piano in Maui I can't thank you enough for the inspiration. Warmest aloha from Maui, Tim & Michele Heile
Here, There and Everywhere.......2007-09-03
Geoff Emerick was there for the creation of the Beatle sound. It is well written with enjoyable person information.
Interesting book.......2007-09-01
I picked up this book to find out why the Beatles are so good, and I found all the answers I was looking for. This book gave terrific insight to all four beatles and the camp that surrounded them, though my patience did wear thin towards the end- Emerick favors Paul, tends to repeat himself a little bit, and shows a little disdain towards Lennon and George Martin. That being said, I really thoroughly loved the book as a music student and an audio engineering student, but any fan of music should read this to get a glimpse of the thrilling world that creates the music we all love. I love understanding the context to the music I listen to, and if you do too you'll really enjoy this book.
I'll read this one again, soon!.......2007-08-29
My favorite Beatles related book to date. Geoff Emerick and Howard Massey captured a straight forward account of The Beatles in the studio from beginning to end. Added bonus includes Paul's sojourn in Lagos recording Band on the Run. The interesting happenings their, were not in the studio.

Book Description
`Michael Jackson: The Man behind the Mask' is the INSIDE STORY of the truth behind the rumors, ugliness and mystery surrounding Michael Jackson.
Is Jackson just a confused person who got too much fame too soon or is he a cold and calculating villain who will stop at nothing to have his bizarre appetites satisfied? Now you can read about it for the first time from the man who knows everything!
The author, Bob Jones, is not a journalist conducting interviews but somebody who has known and been with Jackson for 34 years as his chief of Public Relations; by his side since Michael was 11 years old. Bob Jones is the one person with this unique inside view of Michael Jackson's world. To a certain degree, Bob Jones CREATED Michael Jackson. He created his image. For example, Bob Jones created Michael Jackson's famous nickname "The King of Pop".
Customer Reviews:
ALL OF YOU WHO BELIVE THESE BOOKS ARE PATHETIC.......2007-03-15
IF YOU LIKE THE TRUTH, DONT BUY IT.
ITS FUNNY HOW YOU JUDGE THIS MAN ON BOOKS WRITTEN BY PEOPLE WHO HE'S FALLEN OUT WITH OR NO LONGER TALKS TO WHO ARE TRYING TO GET REVENGE AND MAKE A QUICK BUCK. MJ IS NOT SAD AND PATHETIC - YOU ALL ARE. IM NOT A HUGE MJ FAN BUT IM NOT ABOUT TO GO AND CALL HIM SAD AND PATHIC BASED ON A BOOK THATS NOT EVEN WRITTEN BY HIM. WHO DOES THE AUTHOR THINK HE IS? MIKES PSYCHIATRIST OR SOMETHING? UNTIL MJ ONE DAY COMES OUT WITH ALL THIS AND ITS THE TRUTH I WILL NOT BLIVE IT. ITS SAD HOW THE PUBLIC TURNED THEIR BAK ON HIM. OH AND HIS TALENT ISNT DOWN THE DRAIN...I BELIEVE IT CANT BE LOST.. I JUST THINK ITS MASKED BEHIND THE CONTROVERSY...
Michael Jackson....sad, sick, pitiful....etc, etc............2006-08-08
I was a fan of Michael Jackson's since I was 5 so imagine my increasingly mixed feelings regarding the many bizarre changes I observed over the years. The auther confirmed my gut feelings regarding Michael's disdain for his own race. It's unfortunate, pitiful, & very, very sad. I've seen him grow from a cute cheeked adorable little boy to an inhuman-looking wizened freak because of childhood trauma & self hatred. My mom says he looks like a "dough-face." This man used to be the biggest pop music sensation in the world, but he got so caught up in being recognized as "royalty" that he turned himself into something I can't even fathom. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because it was a little too short. So sad, because he was a talented individual, but it seems that all that talent went down the drain because he got so caught up in his own celebrity & self glorification. As for him hating his own race...pitiful. Apparently Mr. Jackson has never heard of karma, or doesn't care.
So, Informative.......2006-06-09
Perhaps the most overlooked and underrated work on Michael Jackson. It was a short and informative read. It didn't bore you with things you already knew and heard. It was simply put and easy to follow. Kudos to Bob Jones for finally speaking out. I don't know how well this sold, but if Mr. Jones had gone with a major publisher, such as Harper, Simon and Schuster, Warner it would have done even better. Great job and thanks for the compact and detailed-filled story.
Musical Genius.......2006-05-06
"Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask" is a comprehensive story about this remarkable man, that attempts to reveal the truth about him. The book is well written and fairly balanced account on Michael Jackson by someone who should know him well, having worked with him for over 30 years. Michael Jackson is clearly a musical genius with exceptional step, spin and turn on the dance floor. He is one of the most successful American musician and entertainer. His music has brought a lot of happiness to many people all over the world. He is often referred to as The King of Pop or Wacko Jacko. His successful musical career and controversial life style has been at the forefront of pop culture for over a quarter of a century.
Jackson began his musical career at the age of five as lead singer of The Jackson 5. He made his first solo recordings in 1971 while remaining a member of the group. He began a full-fledged solo career in 1979 and formally parted with his siblings in 1984. In his solo career, Jackson recorded and co-produced the best selling album of all time Thriller, with approximate worldwide sales of 60 million , received thirteen Grammy awards and charted thirteen number one singles in the U.S. Michael Jackson has been awarded numerous honors.
From 1988 to 2005, Jackson lived on his Neverland Ranch property, on which he built an amusement park and private zoo for the enjoyment of economically disadvantaged and terminally ill children. His frequently held sleepover parties have received widespread critical media-coverage, especially after he revealed that he sometimes slept in the same bed with several unrelated children. This led to him being accused of child sexual abuse both in 1993 and 2003. He was eventually tried and acquitted of the latter allegations in 2005.
As a human being, Michael Jackson made mistakes and his eccentric character is well known. I am a black man myself and the fact that Michael does not like blacks does not bother me. What is of concern is his relationship with children which in any case he was acquitted. What I consider important is the thrill I have got from his music. Michael should be left alone in freedom instead of being hounded all the time. After all, the last time I checked, America was a democracy, where a man has a right to be eccentric.
The real Michael Jackson from a Motown insider.......2006-04-14
Author Bob Jones was a fixture at Motown Records and was the man who dubbed Jackson the 'King of Pop': for over thirty years he was the public relations force behind the star, and so there's no better writer to explore the 'real' Jackson. Michael Jackson fans - and even those who know music well but don't particularly like Jackson - will find this a gripping read which exposes many truths behind the mask; from his affection for children to his endless plastic surgeries. From his hatred of blacks to his many musical and social challenges, you really get a close inspection of Jackson's life and motivations in MICHAEL JACKSON: THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK.
Book Description
Pedagon, a collection of essays by Canadian scholar David Geoffrey Smith, exemplifies a new genre of interdisciplinary writing. Drawing on such discourses as hermeneutics, literary theory, international relations theory, media and technology studies, Buddhism, and education, Professor Smith weaves a series of illuminating and provocative tapestries that find their focus in questions relating the practices of culture to the conduct of pedagogy.
Customer Reviews:
Tracing the Agonies of Pedagogy.......2000-04-02
David Smith has been an enormous influence on my own work, and I find this collection of his to be precisely the voice our profession of education requires. Brilliant convergences, sudden, breath-taking insight, and the terrible feeling that we've been witnessed.
Book Description
Do you have what it takes to be a Su Doku Grand Master?
Su Doku, "the crosswords without words," come with a warning: it is seriously addictive. You don't need to be a mathematical genius to solve these puzzles; it is simply a question of logic and a little patience. Here is a collection of 100 new puzzles arranged according to difficulty, starting with the easiest and ending with the fiendishly difficult.
Customer Reviews:
Too many easy ones.......2007-08-08
I bought this one based on the recommendation of a previous review by someone who has worked through over 20 Sudoku books. I had also worked over a dozen of Sudoku books myself, and was looking for one that contains mostly advanced puzzles. I do not want to spend money on easy puzzles. The phrase "Grand Mater" in the title of this book also appeared promising.
The book indeed is "a nice size and have good, smooth paper -- much nicer to work on with a mechanical pencil" just as the previous review said. There are 100 puzzle, and I was dismayed to see that they were divided into 4 parts - Easy, Mild, Difficult and Fiendish. I started working on Difficult, and found out that they are really rather easy. I ended up with only 20 puzzles in Fiendish to indulge myself.
This is the second volume of this series. I do not understand the logic of publishing such a series in which every volume contains puzzles for beginners to the 'masters'. Once the readers have passed the beginner stage, all thy want is advanced stuffs. And they keep moving up.
I am disappointed.
Get it for the paper quality.......2007-05-06
I've worked my way through at least 20 books of Sudoku puzzles, but now I only buy Wayne Gould New York Post puzzles. Will Shortz or Wayne Gould -- the puzzles are basically the same. But the Wayne Gould books are a nice size and have good, smooth paper -- much nicer to work on with a mechanical pencil.

Customer Reviews:
A helpful guide.......2006-03-15
This guide reveals a lot of information that I've had trouble trying to find on the net, and also it has a more detailed organization than the average online FAQ.
Romancing SaGa is a very deep game, and developing a party efficiently and getting the most out of the game almost demands the aid of a guide. Tempering weapons, learning the official order of the event quest ranking, and developing job classes are all explained in this useful guide.
This guide gives a bio of each character including starting stats, a run through of each quest and who can or cannot take it, maps, items list, and bestiary. Romancing Saga is a game that is not linear, however, some quests must be completed in a certain order or with certain people in your party. The guide is very helpful, outlining all the possible quests.
Review.......2006-03-02
Has everything that you'd expect from a walkthrough, although the guide isnt layed out in the easiest way to follow. Weapons and items are listed, but when to utilize them without wasting the resource isn't. All and all, the strategy guide will cover all the main elements ... but the player will have to play through again to know how to best utilize everything.
Definitely Helps!.......2006-01-15
This guide can be a pain but believe me it helps in this game it keeps you focused when you might be ready to throw in the towel because you don't know what to do, where to go, or who to see.
A Must Have.......2005-12-30
Though the game Romancing Saga isn't the best made and can be confusing and frustrating at times, this guide is a must have if you really want the game. It provides everything you need to get from the beginning to the end in the easiest possible way, and is clearly categorized for ease.
Firstly, it describes how to start each quest in the game, as well as finishing those quests as successfully as possible. It has maps of every dungeon or city and the required proficiencies needed to get the most out of these areas. It tells you where to recruit the best characters, and how they will progress during your travels. The appendixes are also great, especially the tempering section, showing how to make the better weapons.
Pros and Cons:
+ Detailed character listings
+ How to start and finish each quest, plus the rewards given
+ A weapons, armor, and item section
+ A map section that not only tells where all the secrets are, but also what the shops in each city carry
+ A section for the class system
+ A small bestiary
- The maps could be included on the page of the quest
- Another strategy guide introduction, basically what can be found in the book provided with the game
- Doesn't separate the quests very well, just numbers #, and since the game is non-linear, the # of each quest never follows the order you'll follow
If you have this game and want to enjoy it, pick this guide up. It will help you get to where you need to be the fastest without having to go through all the extra garbage in Romancing Saga.
