Book Description
From the founding of Ybor City in 1886 to the dispersal of Tampa's Latin population in the years following World War II, this book documents the history of the Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants who created the cigar industry in Tampa and the extraordinary multi-ethnic community that flourished around it. Over 200 photos capture this community's personalities and way of life while commentary drawn from newspaper accounts, oral histories, and archival documents identifies and explains each photograph's historical place and significance. In linking the photographs with historical text, the authors allow the cigar workers to tell their own story, in the language of their day.
The rich photographic record around which the book is organized documents the lives of the immigrant cigar workers not only in the workplace but also in their vibrant neighborhoods in Ybor City and West Tampa. Highlighting the diversity of the cigar workers' community, the book depicts the making of cigars, the work culture, local support for the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898), unions and strikes, community institutions such as mutual aid clubs, leisure activities, and social practices surrounding courtship, marriage, and death.
Focusing on the public spaces of work and society as well the private sphere of the home, Tampa's Cigar Workers tells an inspiring and deeply moving story of how immigrant cigar workers from Cuba, Spain, and Italy carved out their space in Tampa while struggling to survive economically and defending their ideals and way of life.

Book Description
This innovative book uses the hand-held programmable graphing calculator as both a calculating tool and a pedagogical tool to teach readers how to do classical circuit analysis and how to make mathematical models of electrical networks that can be programmed on the TI-85 or 86. Introduces a generic method that is compatible with any mathematical computer program. Emphasizes using the computer (specifically the programmable, hand-held graphing calculator TI-85 or 86) as an analysis tool. Tasks include solving for all currents or voltages in any AC or DC circuit of up to 20 nodes or loops; exploring frequency response curves; and performing sensitivity studies on the effects of individual resistor, capacitor, or inductor elements. Includes exercises that require complete computer programs for a variety of common circuits such as bridge circuits, delta-wye circuits, balanced and unbalanced three-phase networks, transistor equivalent circuits, transformer circuits, ladder networks, passive and active filters, differential amplifiers, and instrumentation amplifiers. Other topics include instantaneous power, harmonic representation of square waves, bandwidth filters, and more. For those with an interest in DC/AC Circuits.

Very interesting but not awesome........2001-10-03
I have nearly the same opinion about this book as you Mr. Palomera. I also think that although it's almost 400 pages, you can find (maybe) more infos on sites like ticalc. But these sites are really huges and it's not surprising that it bigger than this book. The book is smart and it gives you a lot of (very) usefull informations plus about the functions of the TI calculators. I recommend it.
Acceptably good, but it could definitely be better........2000-07-07
Apparently, the target audience for this book are students from engineering technology, but it is a useful introduction for any one willing to exploit the calculator in electrical circuits as well as other branches of technology. As Prof. Aston implies in the preface, present day programmable scientific calculators (including but not restricted to TI and HP families, I add) are in many way as powerful as expensive software packages for the analysis of electrical circuits; in fact, two chapters of the book are devoted to PSpice and Mathcad. These calculators are for all practical purposes portable computers with excellent software packages included.
The book includes many examples ilustrating fairly well the use of the TI86 in the analysis and design of circuits, complemented with end of chapter exercises. It emphasizes programming writing, which has both its advantages and drawbacks.
The first chapters consider DC and AC analysis of simple circuits, parallel series combinations, voltage and current divisions, elementary bandpass filters, not forgetting of course the use of complex numbers. Here, the examples introduce very well the use of the calculators in getting numerical and graphical results; in addition, the programming of particular topologies is welcome.
The loop and node methods in chapter 4 emphasize the AC mode, with the resistive dc mode as a special case. Some network properties are considered in chapter 5. My feeling is that these chapters do not exploit well the capabilities of the calculator. Even if not as powerful as the TI-92, the TI-86 allows more powerful treatment of these methods than what provided. The presentation given by the author follows the classical one presented in textbooks, namely, write down the equations, work the algebra to put them in matrix form and then use the calculator to solve this matrix equation. This procedure becomes cumbersome for large circuits; solving the matrix equation is the same for a 2x2 or a 20x20, as far as the calculator allows it. The big problem is to write down the equations and put them in matrix form, and this is where the calculator can be better applied. Programming of particular topologies such as bridged- T or delta-wye configurations is useful for people using these topologies very often. The author has missed however an opportunity to introduce students to the secrets of "circuit simulators", and to understand better what Spice does.
Chapter 7 deals with power, chapter 10 with transformers, mutual inductance and some passive filters structures; and chapter 11 works with circuits containing operational amplifiers as well as active filters. In all the chapters the use of the calculators is well illustrated through examples and programs for design and analyss of particular structures are given. The plots of frequency responses are well introduced for the examples.
Transient analysis of first order circuits is done in chapter 8 with emphasis in graphical results and the use of differential equations solver from the calculator. If you are interested in seeing how powerful can a calculator be for answering questions that students usually make about the usefullness and practical considerations regarding Fourier Series, chapter 9 provides a good introduction using the square wave in particular. Here again, the calculator can be further exploited.
Even if you find useful chapters 7 on PSpice and 12 on Mathcad, I cannot by wonder if they belong really to this book. I would better suggest them as appendices.
It seems that the book was intended as a textbook. However, I would not recommend it for a first try in learning circuits , although it constitutes a good companion for textbooks or else a reference book refreshing some concepts for those who had already been exposed to theory and prefer to concentrate on the tools.

Book Description
Led Zeppelin may have disbanded in 1980, but their legacy lives on. Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham always insisted that the music they made, onstage or in the studio, was the important thing. This meticulous book turns away from Zeppelin's well-chronicled antics on the road to explore what made them the biggest rock band of their day and an enduring influence on generations of musicians. With many rare and seldom-seen photographs, this is the definitive vindication of Led Zeppelin's place at the pinnacle of 20th century musical achievement.
Customer Reviews:
A Top Zep Book.......2007-07-03
One of the best Led Zeppelin books, ever. Over 300 large pages with small print and filled with photos l'd never seen. Deals mainly with the music, its creation and presentation and, doesn't get bogged in drama or supposition. Mr. Shadwick is sometimes opinionated, but it only reveals his deep respect and knowledge of the band. The only disappointment is that the story always ends with Bonham's death. Why can't someone just lie and report that he's living a peaceful existence in the Alps or something?
Well detailed, yet very prejudice..........2007-06-27
Keith Shadwick without a doubt has compiled the most detailed account of the bands career, interviews, and quotes; yet his "musical snob elitist" attitude gets in the way of enjoying this book to its full extent. Keith finds a problem with literally every single song the band had ever recorded, even down to the tinest detail, and constantly quips how great other lesser known, or more under appriciated older musicians are when comparing every song to older ones. It is to no Zeppelin fan's suprise that the band had borrowed ideas from other artists, from pop to folk music, but at that time in the music industry it was normal to cover other bands music and it was a time when bands wrote singles and did not worry about full albums like zeppelin did. His personal opinions make you wonder at times if he is even a fan of the band or not, by trying to make the best effort to disguise his disliking of the band in favor of more "pure" musicians who put out more "inspired" music, as he puts it over and over. His information about the tours, attitudes and visions of the band, and facts are wonderful and that is what kept me reading the book, but his obvious musical snobbery (many times simply just his WELL OVERTHOUGHT opinion about things) kept this book from being what it could have been. Rock n' Roll is not about sheer perfection, or always being musically correct, thats where the passion and originality comes from, but to Keith it seems as if he finds a flaw in anything and everything that Zeppelin ever recorded from track listing, to favoring obviously lesser quality b-sides (to make him look intelligent for liking "poor tom" more than "bron-yur-a-stomp"), to saying how out of pitch Robert is, or Page's "uninspired guitar solo", to Jones "overplaying" keyboard and bass lines, to Bonham obviously taking this drum pattern from the following songs. The fact is, the band wrote what they wrote and took in all their influences. You can't name a rock band that has not taken an idea from another group and gone with it, or showing obviuous influence...that is not a fault of musicians by any means.
The book is a fine read for the information, but the author's personal opnions really ruined alot of it.
THE Led Zeppelin book to read.......2007-05-31
WOW WOW WOW. This book is THE biography of Led Zeppelin to read.
It covers everything factual you would like to know about the band. All the other reviews are good. You won't be disappointed buying this!!! Awesome!
this is the best historical account yet.......2007-04-13
This is the best historical account I have read - and I have read most of the books on Zeppelin that have been published. What makes this book different and in my opinion better, is that it is much less about the partying and much more about the process that they used to create the music. There is great historical info on the Yardbirds and good accounts of concerts.
Most if not all of the photos have been published but that is understandable since there is limited supply of photos. It's unfortunate that Zeppelin didn't seem to have a staff photographer along for the ride. Same is true for the limited video shot of the band.
If there is a downside to this book it is the editing. It is written by a british author and it shows. It was not edited/translated for American readers so you will need to read some of the passages twice to get past what seems like bad structure. British readers may not agree but it does have a few rough spots for American readers. This is no reason not to consider this book.
If you are a Zeppelin fan or are just interested in the history of the music scene at that time, then you should add this book to your collection. It is the best Zeppelin book yet. It's not "Hammer of the Gods" which is a disputed accounting of the band's history. This book is full of foot notes identifying sources - It is much more honest in describing the bands history.
No gossip, no occult, no sharks..........2006-09-18
What sets this new group biography apart from all the rest (including the wonderful Stephen Davis "Hammer of the Gods") is that the author seeks to inform only about the music. No gossip, no rumors, just music. Shadwick sheds light on both studio and live performances and encourages the listener to appreciate Led Zeppelin with new ears.
There are many volumes available about LZ, but I think with this new book by Keith Shadwick we now have the definitive biography.

Book Description
The vise-grip of moral relativism on American popular culture was not suddenly achieved in the 1960s. An incisive new book of unequaled historical scope studies this alluring but poisonous philosophy's hundred-year conquest of the institutions that shape the popular mind: art, music, architecture, film, and, of course, television.
Knight begins with a reminder of the imperfect but healthy society we inhabited before the ideology of self-gratification released the host of social pathologies from which we now suffer. He then guides the reader on a historical tour of the organs of modern popular culture, documenting the nearly unhindered march of relativism-led by a vanguard of decadent lites-through television, Hollywood, art, music, and architecture. This sustained assault on objective truth has brought us to the "Age of Consent," a morally obtuse world in which any act is validated by the mere consent of those immediately involved. Yet the Age of Consent's denial of truth, Knight argues, is unsustainable, and he concludes with a survey of the signs of incipient reaction that give hope for the future.
The Age of Consent opens with a foreword by Gary L. Bauer, president of the Family Research Council, whom the Weekly Standard has called "the most influential social conservative in Washington." As a study of moral relativism, The Age of Consent is unique in its broad historical treatment of the full array of transmitters of popular culture.
Customer Reviews:
Thoughtful and thought-provoking.......2007-03-07
If you want a genuinely serious and reflective examination of the philosophical roots of what has been called America's "culture war," you'd be hard-pressed to find a better choice than Knight's book. Knight is a Christian and a conservative, but I am sure even a secular liberal reader could benefit from reading Knight's critique. A lot of people who rant about "the Religious Right," it seems to me, are actually angry at politicians and TV preachers (or perhaps are motivated by some personal resentment of authority, or by a grievance against religion) and thus do not consider the deeper moral questions that Knight explores in "The Age of Consent." This book is eminently readable, told in a calm, sure and clear narrative style (Knight is a former L.A. newspaper editor). The reader is free to disagree with Knight's analysis, or with the answers he proposes to the problems he diagnoses, but this is a book that should not be merely ignored.
Not Worth My (or Your) Time........2005-10-10
As a person interested in philosophy (particularly moral philosophy), my interest was piqued when I saw this book. I am always up for a good criticism of relativism (whether theoretical or pratical). What I got was a far cry from that. Instead, I got a very tired, rambling and oh-so cliche christian-right harrangue against everything not conservative. If that is what you want, go for this book (though Pat Robertson has written better). If that is not what you want, you have been forewarned.
The biggest problem I have with this book is that the author frankly misunderstands the 'relativism' he rails against. While he rightly states that relativism is the belief that there is no meta-arbiter to decide which beliefs are superior to others, this is not what he laments. He does not lament that society has been rendered incapable of choosing values (because of relativism), but rather that society HAS chosen values, but that they are ONES THE AUTHOR DISAGREES WITH. When he states, as he tirelessly does, that "society has no values/standards anymore," he does not mean literally this. Rather, he means only to say, "Society has values that I think have moved in the wrong direction." If this is what Mr. Knight means, he should have been honest. Instead of substitling the book, "the rise of relativism and the corruption of popular culture," it may have better read, "the rise of secularism, leftism and other things I can't stand and the corruption of popular culture."
The next problem is that from a philosophical standpoint, Mr. Knight only asserts that conservative Christian beliefs are better than leftist/secular beliefs but offers precious little argument as to why this is so. The only argument he uses is a (?!) utilitarian one. This, of course, only after he argues against utilitarian thinking! See the humor?
The third problem I have is that while the book is organized into chapters, the author wanders around so much from sub-rant to sub-rant, that it might as well not be. Most every chapter, whether on secularism, declining standards in TV, or declining standards in architecture (a most unfortunate chapter, by the way), finds our author admonishing against the 'homosexual agenda.'(I am left to assume that the 'heterosexual agenda' is the better agenda, but have no idea why, as Mr. Knight doesn't argue for it.)
I could write more, but I think my point has already been made. The book is sloppy; the book is cliche; the book is poorly thought out and written. Quite simply, it is not worth the time or effort.
Familiar territory, but better than most........2005-04-10
The Bible verse that opens the preface sums it up nicely: "And they all with one consent began to make excuse." (Luke 14:18)
The age of consent, in the way that Knight uses it here, refers to an era in which absolute authority (or even the attempt to appeal to absolute authority) has been drowned out in a flood of changes to the modern cultural pillars (largely the entertainment and cultural fields) that have rendered equal every lifestyle, no matter how destructive or self-absorbed it becomes. In anticipation of the counterargument that suggests that if another person does what he or she wants, it's nobody's business but their own, Knight lays out the landscape of what the cultural fields look like as compared to just a few decades ago. The institutions that have buttressed society and made them better -- the family, religion, and sound education -- have become the targets of the relatively recent cultural barrage. In this sense, Knight argues, it affects everybody, especially the generations that grow up with this environment being the norm.
Although there are separate chapters on each of the two subjects, Knight is concerned about more than just the exaltation of sex and the denigration of God in the culture. The linchpin of his argument is that by dismantling the mechanisms to discern good from bad -- in other words, by making all things equal -- it only festers a further breeding ground for the more base desires to be promoted underneath a glossy veneer of "tolerance" and so-called progressive enlightenment.
One of the ways to distinguish between these types of books is, now that they have described the problem, what is to be done about it? The final chapter of the book points to positive trends in the hope that it provides a transition into an overall improvement, which Knight details in several bullet points to express how the cultural change will have not only moral improvements, but also fiscal improvements as there will be fewer personal messes for the government to clean up.
Even though it came out several years ago, most of the book is not confined to that timeframe. Most of it is still relevant today.
Extremely Relevant...But..........2001-08-15
Author Robert H. Knight, in his "Age of Consent," tackles a huge topic. Yet his historic survey-like description of popular culture's decline misses two key consequences of "Relativism," as a social ethos: (1) Comparativism (which neutrally treats all 'belief/opinion systems' as equally valid); and (2) Moral Legalism (which suggests that legal permissibility--and arguable legal versions of fact, however interpretive--is the ultimate moral authority. (If it's legal, or in a gray area, or undetectable...it's OK, so long as no real harm comes to anyone.) The author fails to expand on the two-edged sword predicament of Relativism, as both a media marketing necessity in a multi-ethnic America, and also the divisive foundation for potential Balkanization. A good intro to the subject.
Right wing hand wringing and moralizing.......1999-06-09
If you want to see what happens to a country when a fundamentalist religious movement hijacks a country you need only look at Iran and Afghanistan. The same would happen here if Gary Bauer and his ilk actually achieved a real measure of power. Their ascendancy would result in a financial collapse that would make the Great Depression look like a tea party. It's so easy to blame easy targets like film, music and the latest whipping boy of the right wing, the 60's, for what's going on in America today. It lets lazy politicians look like they're actually accomplishing something. Watch out...Bauer's running for President.

Digital comments.......2006-11-05
Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks is a nice, user-friendly adjunct to one's digital camera's user manual. It gives simplified explanations with full color pages and LOTS of pictures to supplement the often compex instructions and explanations found in the user manual. The pictures REALLY help, and the explanations are easy to understand, so you don't have to be a rocket-scientist to take markedly better pictures. A definite must-have!
top 100 simplified tips & tricks by g. georges.......2006-02-20
i am a true beginner at digital photography and editing. i have looked at many books, but by far this is the one that helps me the most. it answers many questions in a simple and straight forward way for a novice such as me. it makes this new experience for me a lot of fun.
New Edition is better than ever.......2005-09-01
I just received the new edition of this book. I hestitated to buy it because I owned the previous edition and didn't know if this one would be worth the extra investment. I was not disappointed. This has been totally redesigned and is packed with lots of new techniques and killer photos. Very inspirational and easy to use. Hey...I guess I'm hooked.
Quick & Easy - A Super Guide!.......2004-07-12
I just bought this book last night, and am half way through reading it already. It's an excellent book for the amateur to advanced photographer who hates to read lengthy dialog, but wants to learn some quick tips and tricks on how to improve their photography. Even applies to more advanced photographers - especially those who are coming off of "film" and going "digital".
It has tips and tricks for every aspect of digital photography -- from setting up your equipment, to taking better pics, to storing and printing them.
It assumes the reader has access to Photoshop Elements (as opposed to a complete version of Photoshop), which is nice. It has clear and high-quality photos to support each lesson. Most lessons are 2 pages (a couple are 4 pages), so it's a very quick and easy read. Love it!
Good Tips.......2004-05-17
The only thing I didn't like about this book was that the first page of the photoshop section says "This section requires familiarity with basic Photoshop Elements commands; to learn these commands see "Teach Yourself VISUALLY Restoration and Retouching with Photoshop Elements" If you haven't read that book, this section might not make a lot of sense. It is full of great tips, ideas that are very helpful. It doesn't go into great depth on subject matter but is good for a beginner.

Well worth the price.......2005-09-26
This beginners book on PhotoShop Elemements is clearly written with many useful examples. Unlike other books on this subject, the writer is a professional photographer concerned with preparing photographs for publication - and less about the casual amateur photographer.
I found the book useful and well worth the price.
