Book Description
The European Convention on Human Rights has had a significant impact on the courts of the Member States of the Council of Europe. the aim of the present study is threefold. First, to determine conclusively whether or not there exists a legal obligation on Member States to incorporate the Convention into domestic law. Secondly. to make a comparative survey of the reception of the Convention on the domestic courts of Member States. In pursuit of this last aim, the author has surveyed the application of the Convention in cases involving relations between individuals; the possibility of references by domestic courts to the Convention as part of the corpus of European Community Law, enforceable in the domestic forum; and the authority of the findings to the organs of the Convention in domestic courts, evidenced either in proceeding to give effect to their findings, or in their use as guidelines to clarify the nature and extent of obligations. The study illustrates the growing imoprtance of the Convention as an autonomous source in the domestic law of States Parties. the author concludes by suggesting that a preliminary ruling procedure be instituted in oredr to ensure the harmonious and uniform application of Convention Law by domestic courts.
Book Description
The purpose of this comparative study is three-fold. Firstly, it offers an analysis of and a comparison between the application and interpretation of Article 8 (often in conjunction with the anti-discrimination principle of Article 14) of the European Convention of Human Rights and the application and interpretation of the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution, in particular with regard to family law. Secondly, it compares and analyses the answers to the specific questions regarding circumstances under which a legal parent--child relationship may be established and by whom, as described under Dutch (Chapter 4) and Californian, New York and Texas Law (Chapter 5). And thirdly, it compares and analyses the compliance with and influence of the European Convention as reflected in family law by the Dutch Supreme Court and the compliance with and influence of the U.S. Constitution as reflected in family law decisions -- and filiation law in particular -- by the courts in California, New York and Texas.

Book Description
The definitive biography of a pop giant!
From the groundbreaking Piano Man to Just the Way You Are to Allentown to Uptown Girl and dozens of other chart toppers, Billy Joel's music has provided the soundtrack to millions of lives. His songs are etched in our memories, and his live shows are breaking sales records everywhere. His albums have sold more than 100 million copies, his singles have sold millions more, and 33 Joel songs have appeared on Billboard's Top 40 charts since 1974. Here at last is the definitive biography of the brilliant and volatile artist Billy Joel. Interviews with Irwin Mazur, Joel's first manager, Artie Ripp, Joel's first producer, plus many others from every part of the musician's life offer revealing glimpses of a man known for his outsize personal struggles as well as his phenomenal gifts. With dramatic new information on Joel's legal battles and his substance abuse, plus his live concerts and Broadway show Movin' Out, Billy Joel: The Life and Times of an Angry Young Man is an exciting, up-to-the-minute look at one of the great musical geniuses of our times.
Customer Reviews:
Good synopsis but not definitive.......2007-07-18
For me, the period of time from "Turnstiles" to "Nylon Curtain" was the ultimate Billy Joel. He was in his element and his trials and tribulations with his first wife Elizabeth were reflected in his art. Joel is as much tin pan alley as he is a rocker. (Among his many influences were Ray Charles, The Beatles, Procol Harum, Hendrix, Traffic, etc) This book reflects on Joel well but it is not a balanced portrait. I suspect the truth maybe between the two biographies. Joel has been burned so many times that he has a deep mistrust of outsiders and I suppose thats intertwined with his relationships with the opposite sex. Joel has been oft quoted as saying "Why would anyone want to read about me?" He definitely is an interesting enigma wrapped up in a riddle but these books wont peel past those layers. That being said, Bordowitz does a good job of cobbling together the early years and the infamous "suicide" attempt. The level of detail is appropriate up until the "Innocent Man" era. At that point, Bordowitz steps on the gas pedal and we are fast forwarded to about 2004. All things being equal though, this a good attempt but not the last word by any means. I suspect Joel still has the profound ability to create great work in any idiom. His is driven by his passion for those he loves (Listen to "Lullabye" or "Downeaster Alexa") and equal parts insanity ("I go to Extremes") and these are the hallmarks of most great composers. If anything, Joel wears his heart on his sleeve and we have admired him for it.
Interesting Info -- Terribly Written.......2007-01-11
I've not read other attempts at Billy Joel biographies, so this one definitely contained some interesting facts that I, as a long fan, did not know. It was incredibly difficult, however, to pull those tidbits out from the terrible and often ridiculous prose that is the writing (and editing -- hello typos -- "through" and "thorough" are not the same word!) of this book. The author tries (too hard) to draw parallels where none exist solely for the sake of attempted literary-ness. Commenting on the "McCarthyism" of "Good Night Saigon" (so that he could refer to another song on The Nylon Curtain as having traces of "McCartneyism" -- get it?)? That song is anything but. I especially loved when the author recounted a diatribe Billy made against music industry forces that try to stifle an artist's creativity. Billy apparently said something along the lines of once an artist lets the people who control the money influence the art, then the art begins to stink like a dead horse. The author makes the feeble attempt to say this remark is a passing reference to when Billy's former manager and brother-in-law, Frank Weber, stole money from Billy by, among other things, getting involved in intentionally maiming horses for insurance money. Are you joking? People with money trying to control the artist's decision + dead horse. Um -- clearly the author has never seen The Godfather. Sure, Mr. Bordowitz, that's ALL about an insurance fraud/race horse scam. Good one. Overall, the writing was terrible and VERY repetitive. He frequently used the exact same quote two or three times, sometimes within a span of just a few pages. As I said, where is the editor? I would recommend this book if you want to learn some more details about Billy Joel, but be warned. As a book, it sucks. Big time. (Ultimate irony: Read the last chapter wherein the author recounts how, at one time, Billy had agreed to cooperate with a biography but only if was a respectable author who actually could write. And then the author wonders why it would be that Billy refused to particpate in the writing of this rag. Hmmm. Check the mirror, bub. The writing stinks. Kinda like a dead horse.)
Until the Real Thing Comes Along...This'll Have to Do.......2006-04-28
This biography of Billy Joel is the best one I've ever seen of Billy. It's also the only one I've ever seen. Bordowitz has put together a decent, though not definitive, look at Billy Joel's career by splicing together interviews with ex-associates of BJ's, articles from other magazines, and a few of BJ's TV interviews. To say that the sources are thin would be an understatement. Bordowitz also makes a few glaring chronological errors that should've been edited out. He refers to 1981 as the end of the Reagan Years in the White House, when really it was just the beginning. He also refers to Axl Rose as an early 1980's contemporary of Billy's.
For all of this book's faults it's still interesting. It is a quick read and will tide over fans of Billy Joel until the autobiography comes out. That'll probably happen when Billy is ready to get married a 4th time. Maybe in three years.
OK, but mostly past interview material.......2006-03-08
Chronologically, this was a good history of his career. But reading the book, I couldn't help feeling that I had heard much of this before. All direct quotes from Billy Joel were taken from newspaper and magazine interviews as he did not participate in this book.
I have heard that this was a negetive portrayal of Mr. Joel, but I found it to be realistic. Nobody is perfect.
Good book that covers early years well... .......2006-02-17
I think that if someone is researching rock music, this is a good resource and has some of the people who took part in Billy's early years, but if you're looking for the definitive bio on Billy Joel, the writer mentions that the people close to him have either signed nondisclosure agreements or have nothing bad to say about him, as well as Billy not feeling that his life story is worth writing about (and that the book would have to be a great novel that makes for a read for people who don't know who he is), more likely the real reason is that he's too guarded due to being burned over the years by people (which is covered).
The writer seems to depend heavily on existing interviews because he seems to only be able to interview a very small handful of people. I don't think the writer exploited Billy as badly as he could have, even though drug using, the car crashes and women problems are brought up. But putting it in perspective that a lot of it took place in the "free" 60s and 70s, it is stil l tamer compared to what has been written about the Beatles, Elvis(one of the Memphis Mafia worked with Billy), and Led Zeppelin (Billy Joel: Hammer of the Keys?). But without the bandmembers, family, and ex-wives, we're left with existing interviews and allegations.
Again, the good parts in the book are more about Billy's years growing up on Long Island, playing the clubs and finding his way into fame and fortune than once he made it, the discography info, and some of the things he did prior to "Piano Man".
Book Description
Woven of flashbacks by musicians, artists, authors, radicals and folks who "were there" in the '60s, this book by author Alan Bisbort (The White Rabbit and Other Delights) and Rolling Stone staffer Parke Puterbaugh travels through: San Francisco's rock revolution, with bands like the Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead; the British underground scene, with Pink Floyd and Cream; the phenomenon of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper"; the dawn of psychedelia in Los Angeles, with the Doors and Frank Zappa; and rock's festival years, from Monterey to the Isle of Wight. It also explores psychedelic literature, journalism, posters, films, fashion, lingo and more, plus the impact of politics and the rebuff of radicals such as Abbie Hoffman, Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsberg. In full color throughout, the book features lots of photos, a helpful index, and a foreword by Howard Kaylan of The Turtles.
Customer Reviews:
Dump Evan!.......2007-01-27
Some clueless dolt from LA called "Evan Dump" has chosen to attack this book, which I co-authored with Parke Puterbaugh. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, but my mother always told me to "consider the source." So, let's "consider" what "Evan Dump" finds worthy of 5 stars, based on his other reviews prior to this one. He gave five stars to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. Anyone with even a tiny grasp of rock 'n' roll history knows that Reed released this 2-LP mess--nothing but feedback from his guitar, produced mostly when he was out of the room because even he couldn't bear to listen to it--in order to get out of a recording contract with RCA. It worked! They dropped him, and he went on to Arista. Dump also gave 5 stars to two "musical" acts that produce "sound collages." (Read: obnoxious noise). This, of course, makes him eminently qualified to pass judgement on a book that covers the music, art, journalism, literature, spiritual quests, drug taking and politics of an epochal time in American cultural history. At least it does in his own mind and, with easy access to a keyboard and mouse, on the Internet. Our book has received rave endorsements from John Sebastian, Felix Cavaliere, members of the Turtles and many others who have found it a spot on reassessment of those times. Dump's LSD fantasies have only exacerbated his tendencies to sulk and piss and moan because the music he loves has consistently cleared rooms and left him all alone, and sad. Boo hoo.
pathetic.......2007-01-25
These dorks waste 8 pages reassuring each other that they are cooler for never having dropped acid, focussing instead on record collecting and self-assigned reading programs to carry them through their late-60s adolescence. Then they go on to diss Silver Apples and Amon Duul. So very wrong.
Outstanding color digest of those days!.......2006-03-21
I was right there at the center of things in the SF Bay Area in the late '60s, saw Hendrix & Cream live, and of course all the SF acid groups, and I love this book, it is a quick, easy and colorful read of what was happening back then, entirely accurate and all the basics are covered. Well-written, well-designed, and full of interesting tidbits I never knew.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect presentation.......2007-01-10
It is the definitive work on the history of the US chess championships.
A fine book about the US Chess Championship.......2005-02-21
I like this book very much.
It begins with a description of the match between Charles Stanley and Eugene Rousseau in 1845. Stanley won that match to become the first US Champion. Eight year old Paul Morphy watched as Stanley, as Black, played 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 Ba5 a6! TN 4 Ba4 b5. The move 3...a6 is now named for Morphy, who became the US Champion in 1857. We continue with George Mackenzie, who first won the US Championship in 1871. Mackenzie won in 1874 and again in 1880, when he defeated James Grundy in a playoff match. Andy Soltis and Gene McCormick tell of the scandal involved, in which Grundy won a game under very dubious circumstances, allowing him to reach the playoff.
Then we see champions Harry Pillsbury and Frank Marshall. And a discussion of Jose Capablanca's claim to the US championship. Capablanca defeated Marshall in a match 8-1, but was not granted the title of US Champion for a simple reason: he was not an American citizen, but a citizen of Cuba.
We then proceed to the 1936 Championship tournament, won by Sammy Reshevsky. (Amazingly, Reshevsky was still playing in the US Championship when he tied for third in 1981). And we see the wild 1942 championship, in which Reshevsky was awarded a win by tournament director Walter Stephens, who, in the most outrageous ruling in US chess championship history, forfeited Arnold Denker on time even though Denker's flag was still up (the game should have been a draw). Reshevsky wound up tying for first after that, and he won a playoff with Isaac Kashdan for the title. Perhaps justice was served when Denker won the 1944 championship.
After that, a new generation took over. In 1951, 19-year old Larry Evans won the championship, and in 1954, 23-year old Arthur Bisguier won it. In 1957, 14-year old Bobby Fischer became our youngest champion. Fischer went on to win all eight of the championships he played in. We see him scramble out of lost positions in 1959-60 against Robert Byrne and Edmar Mednis (he lost games in later championships to both of them). We see the 1962-63 championship, in which Fischer finished a game ahead of Bisguier by defeating him on the White side of a Ruy Lopez, Berlin variation. And there's the incredible Fischer 11-0 sweep in 1963-64, where the commentators thought Fischer was lost in his game with Robert Byrne until Byrne quite properly resigned.
We see Walter Browne's championships in the 1970s and early 1980s, as well as the 1978 championship that Browne withdrew from. And the incident in the game between Leonid Shamkovich and Mednis in that tournament: Mednis lost when he got into time pressure caused by his clock running much faster than any of the other clocks.
In the 1987 championship, we see Nick deFirmian tie Joel Benjamin for first place. Once again, a director's ruling came into play when deFirmian appeared to lose a game on time after his opponent, Michael Rohde, made an illegal move! The ruling gave deFirmian enough time to reach the time control and win the game. And we see descriptions of the tournaments through 1996.
I liked the more than 100 games in the book. It is a fine tribute to all the players in the history of championship chess in the United States.
All you need to know about Championship Chess in the U.S........2003-06-21
"All you need to know about Championship Chess in the U.S."
I wasn't really interested in reviewing this book, but an Internet student asked me to take a look at it, as he was thinking about buying it for his collection. (I have had this book for several years now.)
First you should know that I am a Chess Master that for many years has made a living from teaching chess. Secondly, I am also a huge fan of Andy's, but I will try to be objective as possible here.
The books starts off with an Introduction, and in it is a very funny and amusing story as told by Pat Wolff to Charles Fried, the former Solicitor General in the Reagan Administration. (I also wish to note that only people who are familiar with the plight of chess players in the U.S. can even begin to comprehend what he is talking about.)
Chapter One is entitled, "A Champion Is Crowned." It is the story of one Charles H. Stanley, the first official U.S. Champion. (Did you know that the first U.S. Championship was a match between Stanley and Rousseau? And that it was played in New Orleans in 1845? Most people think Morphy was the first U.S. Champion, but that is a common misconception.)
Chapter Two is about Paul Morphy. (Who else?) There are chapters with titles like, "The King Is A Captain." (Chap. # 3.) Or ... "The Years Of Confusion." Or even "The Man Who Enjoyed It." I could go on and on, but I trust by now you get the general picture. This is a great book. Its NOT just a chess book, but a history book as well. And one that is thoroughly enjoyable to read.
My favorite chapter would have to be the one that covered the life and times of Samuel Reshevsky. His `squeakers' and come-from-behind finishes are most enthralling to read about. And the way that Soltis describes it, one almost feels as if you were there ... re-living the events as they happen.
Practical every era and period of chess is covered. Nothing is left out. There are dozens - if not hundreds - of game fragments, and many nicely annotated games as well. Soltis often gives you a `blow-by-blow' that other chess authors will not trouble to do. You find out many stories that may have stayed permanently behind the scenes if not for this book.
You get 8 pages in the middle of the book with 16 truly beautiful photographs. At the end of the book is nearly everything a chess person could want or desire: # 1.) A complete summary; # 2.) Individual records; # 3.) An Openings Index; # 4.) An ECO openings index, # 5.) A general index.
And there are even some personal memories in here for me. I attended and was a spectator at many of these events, starting as a small boy visiting my GrandMother in New York. The section that describes the Lev Alburt victory at Jacksonville, Florida in 1990 is very personal for me. I was there in the audience, and I watched just about every game. (My Brilliancy Prize game for The U.S. Open that year can be found in just about every on-line database.) And - of course! - you get cross-tables from most or all of these events.
I do not think I can rate this book highly enough, nor do it any real justice in a small review.
Why would you buy this book? Certainly not to improve ... there are too many good teaching books - `The Complete Chess Player,' by Reinfeld; `My System,' by Nimzovich; "How To Re-Assess Your Chess," by IM Jeremy Silman; The Watson or Alburt books, etc. Plus you could get several other books what you will pay for this one, especially if you are willing to buy a used book.
You would not buy this book if you are trying to raise your rating ... once again this is not a book really designed to do that. No!! Buy this book because you love the game and want a book that will be a permanent and lasting memory of all the great tournaments, and all the great players who played in them. Q.E.D.

Pleasure to Read.......2006-10-26
First I want to mention that the title of the book accurately reflects the content. The content is meant for medium to advanced users who have some level of understanding of networking, network security, and Intrusion Detection. The readers require some experience with Cisco networking technology because all the switch and router setup examples in this book are based on Cisco technology, which is understandable since this is Cisco focused.
The book follows a structure which is similar to other Cisco Press certification self-study books. Each chapter starts with an introduction to the chapter content, followed by the "Do I Know This Already?" quiz, then the actual chapter content, and a Foundation Summary summarizing the key information learned in that chapter, and finally a Q&A section. The foundation summary at the end of each chapter really helps to re-capture what has been learned in the chapter and helps to remember the key points from the certification exam point of view. The Q&A at the end of each chapter helps to test what has been learned in the chapter.
The author also added lot of notes in between which helps to understand any additional information relevant to the configuration and functionality of the Cisco IPS. Sometimes the author makes a comparison of the IPS feature with a similar feature in another Cisco product for easy understanding, for example he compares the virtual sensor feature with virtual firewall feature which some readers may be familiar with. I like the way the author explains each topic with a suitable example rather than just going through the configuration commands.
Another really good thing about this book is that it has very few errors and typos. The author has really done a very good job of presenting accurate and error free content in this book.
The author explains all the important menu items in the IPS Device Manager (IDM) tool in a logical sequence making it easy to follow and understand.
The book also covers IDSM-2, however there are no real examples shown. Some real scenario example could help to understand the IDSM-2 configuration even better. The book even covers the NM-CIDS router module, and the Security Monitor tool also to an extent.
In essence this books rounds up all the Cisco IPS related technologies, and hence serves as a good reference for Cisco IPS. This book is useful not only as an exam preparation guide for the Cisco IPS exam 642-532, but also as a reference book for those who work with Cisco IPS appliances on day-to-day basis.
Like any other Cisco certification exam, in addition to this self-study book I also recommend the readers to have some hands-on practice to pass the exam comfortably.
The book includes a CDROM which contains exam practice questions in study mode, practice mode and flash card format. If you are using this book to prepare for the Cisco IPS exam 642-532 then these practice questions will help you to assess your preparedness for the real exam. The CDROM also contains the entire book in PDF format and some extra supplemental materials, which is a definite advantage for anyone who wants to carry the entire book in their laptop.
The only complaint I have about this book is that the IDM screen shots are not quite readable. I hope this will be improved in the next edition.
I strongly recommend this self-study book for anyone preparing for the Cisco IPS 642-532 exam. I would certainly read other titles from this author.
matlock is a fake, yeah sure enough, he read 6 books in one day........2006-07-31
John gunny matlock is a fake, yeah sure enough, he read 6 books in one day. right I bet.this review system is a joke, if some guy can just review any book and give it five stars. just look at some the titles he has read, gardening and interior design to ips and c++.
One more test to CCSP.......2006-02-11
I took/passed the IPS exam today using only this book as my study guide (plus the IPS units i work w/ everyday ;). hardly any errors at all in this book, a welcome relief having just come off of the bcran cisco self study book. This book has all the information you need to pass the test. the cdrom has the pdf book, which is good to read at work :)
the testing engine on the cdrom, while not the same questions as the real exam, is almost the same level of difficulty as the actual exam.
who is "john matlock gunny".......2006-01-31
either this guy has no life and has truly read every book for which he has written a review. or publishers pay him to write all of these reviews..
just click on his name and look at how many reviews he has written.. and many within only a day or two of one another.
IMPOSSIBLE, i say. unless this guy is living in the mountains somewhere in a lifestyle not unlike the unabomber.
Professional Level Intrusion Prevention.......2005-10-20
The Cisco Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is an advanced suite of products designed to protect networks against the bad, bad world. Intrusion prevention presumes a good working knowledge of networks, and a valid CCNA or CCIP certification is a prerequisite for CCSP certification.
As expected by the title, this book prepares the reader to take the IPS test. It covers the material on the test, but at the same time gives a solid background in intrusion protection. The format of this book is a bit unusual. Each chapter begins with a test, called the 'Do I Know This Already?' Quiz. This can be a real timesaver as it helps to narrow down the areas where time needs to be spent.
The CD supplied with the book contains a complete copy of the book along with a dummy test with 200 practice questions all available in study mode, test mode, and flash-card format.
This is a professional level book, not for beginners.
