      Book Description

'Practical Analog Electronics for Technicians' not only provides an accessible introduction to electronics, but also supplies all the problems and practical activities needed to gain hands-on knowledge and experience. This emphasis on practice is surprisingly unusual in electronics texts, and has already gained Will Kimber popularity through the companion volume, 'Practical Digital Electronics for Technicians'.

Written to cover the Advanced GNVQ optional unit in electronics, this book is also ideal for BTEC National, A-level electronics and City & Guilds courses. Together with 'Practical Digital Electronics for Technicians', this text comprises a complete practical electronics course designed for students with little prior knowledge of the subject.

        The Complete
        Narcissist's Guide

Mimi E. Gotist delivers a gift for our times: practical, simple guidance to help you cope with the self-loving people in your life-while nurturing your own inner narcissist.

At once utterly self-absorbed, and charmingly aware of it, Gotist offers advice on:

      • Dating: You're not looking for the person you want to marry -- you're looking for the person you want to change
      • Career: Don't work -- work it
      • Spirituality: Me Here Now
      • Personal Growth: You can't help anyone who won't help you

        5 out of 5 stars I laughed a little too hard..............2003-06-12

I got this as a birthday gift, from my sister no less. At first I was insulted, and then I started reading and couldn't stop laughing. This is a great send-up of the self-help, I'm-OK-you're-OK genre that says all we have to do is acknowledge our fear of failure, selfish behavior, and loathing of humanity and then miraculously everything will be OK.

While Mimi's discourses on "The Tyranny of Sharing" and "How to Avoid Socially Conscious Religions" are funny - there's also some truth to it all. It's as if she climbed into my brain and interviewed the mean, selfish other twin (I'm a Gemini) who seldom shows his public face. For anyone who's lived through all the self-help trends from EST to Marianne Williamson to Dianetics, this is a hysterical book.

A fabulous gift for the narcissist - or self-help junkie - in your life.

        5 out of 5 stars Alarmingly Funny.......2003-06-04

I was a little alarmed when this book was sent to me as an anonymous gift. With trepidation, I started reading it -- and laughed so hard I forgot to be alarmed. I was then alarmed all over again when I realized how much I identified with Ms. Gotist. So much so that I've now started reading the book again. Highly enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars Enough About Ewe.......2003-05-18

Mimi E. Gotist has nailed the self-help, self-empowered, spiritual, survival, highly-effective, Martha-Stewart-Living, bologna soup for the soul genre. Starting with the front cover, (by "uncritically self-acclaimed author), moving to the dedication, ("To me, me and only Mimi), throughout the "Seven-Steps", all the way to the "Begrudging Acknowledgements" and the
typeface ("Narcissus Boldfacias"), Mimi never stops. Mix yourself a generous mimitini (three ounces iced Grey Goose vodka, six citrus-stuffed olives on the side, to minimize vodka displacement), grab your biggest diamond-encrusted mirror, lie down in front of your oversized Aspen fireplace and let Mimi show you how to deal with all those self-loving people in your life, including, guess who? YOU!
Don't forget to check out her website...and buy yourself a pair of ENOUGH ABOUT EWE (tm) Sheepish Slippers. "Crafted from fleece made from recycled low-fat soymilk bottles, for a look and feel that's so lifelike only Ewe will know the difference."...

5 out of 5 stars The Best !! (But perhaps not for YOU....).......2003-05-17

Howling-out-loud-funny (and a bit too much identification....) on the ways, dreams and aspirations of the Fabulous Narcissists!! This book is not, of course, for the masses (OP/Ordinary Person as Me-Me calls THEM), only for the Select Few (as IIIII call them!!)
If you're Good Enough and can Understand put this one in your Personal Organizer(or have one of your Staff)rush out to get it ASAP!!!

        5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2003-05-17

My friend gave me this for a BDAY gift and I immediately fell off my chair laughing. Enough About You is one of those laugh out loud books -- almost every page has a funny joke. It was a great gift.

        Book Description

Throughout his life, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was enchanted, amused, aroused, and betrayed by women—his mother, sister, wife, sisters-in-law, female patrons, friends, lovers, and fellow artists—and he was equally complex to them. But ultimately the great composer loved and respected the women he knew intimately and those whom he admired from afar. In this fascinating, evocative, and compellingly readable biography, Jane Glover, acclaimed conductor and acknowledged expert on Mozart's life and work, brings these remarkable ladies vividly to life—the real women who shared the composer's tumultuous world and inspired some of his greatest musical achievements, as well as those he dramatized in his magnificent operas.

5 out of 5 stars A humanizing look into the lives of those who knew Mozart best.......2007-08-10

I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end. "Mozart's Women" examines the lives of Mozart, his family and friends, giving the reader clear insight into the relationships they had with one another, and how these relations carried over into Mozart's brilliant compositions. Jane Glover sensitively describes all of the people in Mozart's life to the point where it's as if they could be living among us today. Humanizing Mozart and those he loved helps the reader better understand the circumstances under which Mozart's music was inspired and written (especially his operas, whose plots and female characters especially are all explained in depth) and give the reader a solid historical context which will undoubtedly change the way we listen to Mozart's scores, even if we've heard them countless times already.

4 out of 5 stars Mozart from an other angle.......2007-04-07

Jane Glover, a well known conductor and Mozart expert does not claim that she has written an original book on her admired and adored composer genius. She admits: "The Mozart field has been enormously well mined, and for this book I have done no original research". It is a new angle that she presents on Mozart, looked at through the eyes of the women who brought him up, grew up with him, loved him and with whom he worked in the world of music.

After reading many books on Mozart this book still gave me a lot of pleasure and a new insight to the life of this likeable genius of music.

The book is divided in to two major parts. The first on Mozart`s life with his two families, the second on the singers of Mozart`s operas and how the composer created music, blending and integrating the individual talents and capabilities of these singers with his music.

This analysis is highly technical, but never boring and can contribute to the better understanding and enjoyment of Mozart`s music.

The end of this second part tells the reader about the lives of Mozart's women after his death. It is a good ending, satisfying the readers curiosity about how Mozart, the penniless, ignored and poorly treated composer, at the time of his death, suddenly became the most durable and popular composer, generating a handsome income, that was denied to him in his lifetime, - for his widow and two sons. This, interestingly, had a lot to do with his widow's business talents.

This well written book will bring satisfaction and a new insight on Mozart's life and works, even to those who are familiar with the large Mozart literature

4 out of 5 stars A conscientious and fascinating work.......2007-01-12

By her through investigation on Mozart's women, Jane Glover let us know the very details and fresh information on them which other authors have overlooked to describe. In line with these freshness, such new finding by this female conductor as the very opening gesture of the Requiem is almost a quotation from the introduction to his own aria,' Ah, non sai qual pena sia' (K416), impress us favorably. Her excellent and fine sentences make us read this book without boredom.

        Shuji Fujisawa(Yokohama, Japan)

        5 out of 5 stars A Most Enlightening Biography.......2007-01-10

For those who have a special love of the music of Mozart, and there must be many, MOZART' WOMEN, offers a very special insight into the way Mozart composed and the role women played in his creative genius. His mother and his sister were especially important. The four Weber sisters, one of whom was to become his wife, greatly influenced his music. As Jane Glover, a well qualified musician, indicates that once Mozart became involved in opera, he was to write some of the loveliest of music, drawing on the female soloists, who were to play the many roles, as his inspiration.

In addition to Mozart's life, Jane Glover provides an interesting insight into C18th Europe, its courts and its cities. Jane Glover writes well. Her effort is based on thorough research and is well documented.

        5 out of 5 stars A Polite, Sensible Biography.......2006-12-15

If you hope to share vicariously any of Mozart's amatory escapades, this book will disappoint you. There are cautious suggestions of romantic entanglements, but there is also the overwhelming depiction of Mozart as a man who spent most of his waking hours composing and playing music, as any reasonable person should imagine. If you hope to penetrate very deeply in Mozart's pysche or intellect, you may also be slightly disappointed; author Jane Glover chooses to approach the composer largely from the outside, from the influence on his career of his father, wife, and the many women musicians with whom he worked. With those two warnings in mind, I can strongly recommend the book as compelling reading. The text is segmented: The first third is a concise biography of Mozart from his birth to his early death, focused chiefly on his struggle to make an independent living as a musician. The second third addresses the practical factors of performance and specific performers that shaped Mozart's operas. The third follows the lives of Mozart's sister, wife, and other women companions after Mozart's death. One could choose to read each segment as a separate article, and I suspect most readers will be most thrilled by the first third of the book. There is something eminently sensible and polite (dare I say British?) about Jane Glover's writing style, which I found delightfully incongruous when applied to the rambunctious, impish, scatological, scattered manchild who composed such grand music.

Some great science fiction has asked about robots and the right to vote--but what happens when we're 51 percent artificial ourselves? Cyberculture scholar Chris Hables Gray looks at the ever-changing human body in Cyborg Citizen: Politics in the Posthuman Age and makes some well-educated guesses on the makeup of the future cybernetic body politic. Though he does go out of his way to remind the reader that nearly all of us are bioenhanced (that is a vaccination scar, isn't it?), he's neither a chrome-eyed Extropian nor a Rifkinesque fear-mongerer. His thesis is refreshingly simple in a world overfilled with postmodern complexity: we're changing our bodies more and more radically, and we ought to think about how this will change our way of life.

Examining health care, social interactions, and politics, Gray's focus is largely on particular modifications and enhancements such as prosthetic limbs, artificial organs, performance-enhancing drugs, and their descendants. The book never dips into freak show territory, though; even if Gray uses colorful examples to illustrate his points, he still maintains a humanistic attitude throughout. His simple thesis, coupled with this attitude, create a web of thought that is simultaneously entertaining and enlightening. Though our track record on preemptively dealing with change is spotty at best, reading Cyborg Citizen is still a good prescription for keeping the posthuman jitters at bay. --Rob Lightner

        Book Description

The growing synergy of humans and technology--from dialysis to genetically altered foods to PET scans--is transforming how we view our minds and our bodies. But how has it changed the body politic? How can we forge a society that protects the rights of human and cyborg alike?
The creator of the cult classic Cyborg Handbook, Chris Hables Gray, now offers the first guide to "posthuman" politics, framing the key issues that could threaten or brighten our technological future. For good or ill, politics has already been cyborged in ways that touch us all: On-line voting promises to change who participates. Wars are won on video screens. Biotechnological advances-- cloning, sexual prostheses, gene patents--are redefining life, death, and family in ways that strain the social contract. In the face of these advances, visions of the cyborg future range from the utopian to the nightmarish, from a spiritual super-race transcending the body's confines to a soulless Borg consuming human individuality.
Only with a broad, historically rich and ethically grounded understanding of these issues, Gray argues, can we combat the threats to our freedom and even our survival. A work of vision and imagination, Cyborg Citizen lays the groundwork for the participatory evolution of our society.

        Customer Reviews:

        3 out of 5 stars Half of a dissapointment.......2006-03-24

I had a high level of interest upon picking up this book, as cyborg technology and the philosophy behind it, after reading it; however, I have to say I was a bit disappointed. I gave it a rating of 3 stars, but I think it deserves more along the lines of a 2.5. This book professes to be about cyborgs, and it is, but Gray's definition of "cyborg" is so incredibly broad that it loses a huge part of its relevancy. He defines a cyborg as "a self-regulating organism that combines the natural and artificial into one system," and takes that as far as it can possibly go, calling unborn fetuses cyborgs if they are viewed by ultrasound, and the average citizen a cyborg for having immunizations. I am a cyborg because I wear glasses.

One aspect of this book that struck me is that nearly everything Gray discusses seems to be along the lines of either common sense of common knowledge to the type of person who would be reading this book in the first place. It is useful as a reference material to springboard off of and steal a few quotes, or perhaps a simple overview of some of the politics of a technological society, but not much more.

By the end of this book, one is tired of the completely over-used word "cyborg"; as it seems to apply to nearly everything and everyone in today's society; as well as Gray's frequent references to the late Christopher Reeves. Like so many movies today, this book is worth a borrow, but I wouldn't plop down my hard earned money for it. If you are looking for in-depth research surrounding the technolgy of cyborgs, look elsewhere.

        5 out of 5 stars A man with a vision.......2005-02-08

Not only does his book have a dazzling perspective into all the ways that the body is modified within modern practice he also brings it to a level that even the most novice of readers can grasp. Having been a philosophy student of Mr. Gray's in 1997 I must say it is not quite as enlightening as being in person with him, but it still shows his brilliance and true connection to the cyborg-mentality. Frankly if you can find a way to meet him, every second is worth it. But if you can't, this book is a good close second, and well worth your $ and reading time.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing survey of changing images of civil rights.......2002-06-05

In Cyborg Citizen, the author argues that the creation of cyborgs calls for new definitions of citizenship. Examples can include Internet offerings and the legal and political issues raised by its use, and issues affecting the mechanization of humans with artificial parts. An intriguing survey of changing images of civil rights and liberties.

2 out of 5 stars Almost achieves coherence, but not quite.......2002-04-01

Why does it seem that all books written about human interaction with emerging technologies are written in postmodernist lingo? Gray's book is not nearly as objectionable in this regard as others (note, especially, the works of Pierre Levy, for truly awe-inspiring levels of incomprehensibiliy). At times he hits on topics that struck me as having a lot of merit (he takes the editors of WIRED to task, for instance, for promoting a sort of hipster-oh-man-this-is-so-awesome approach to technology, and he appropriately skewers libertarianism, etc.). However, I saw two main problems with the book: (1) The author appears to see everything and everybody in the world today as a cyborg of some sort - for example, ultrasound renders the fetus in the womb a cyborg, etc. The concept is so widely applied that it ceases to have meaning. (2) The regrettable lapses into postmodernist drivel, while thankfully infrequent are still discouraging. There is also a little (not a lot) of political correctness a la feminist theory to deal with. For instance, he spends some time skewering (no pun intended) the development of penile implants (cyborg penises!), and points out that the existence of such a phenomena validates the male-centric nature of technology so insightfully criticized by feminist theory. Odd, but no mention of breast implants is made. Purely an oversight, I'm sure!

There are so many serious topics to deal with in the area of our current and future relation to technology - when will someone write a coherent book addressing them?? While this book is an occasionally enjoyable read, in the end it can't be taken all that seriously.

4 out of 5 stars Call Me Cyborg.......2001-10-24

Written in the personal, post-modern style, down to earth, and occasionally profound, Cyborg Citizen is an instructive meditation on the interpenetration of the machine and the human, the machine and the non-human, the human and the non-human. Hables Gray reviews most of the relevant academic literature (Haraway and others) draws examples of cyborg lifestyles from the news (Christopher Reeves and others), from pop culture (TV, Sci-Fi, comic books) to make his larger point that the signs of cyborgization are everywhere now, and that we are all cyborgs now, whether we know it or not. Though penetrated by technoscience, most of us are not aware of the extent to which we have become drafted in the great cyborg experiment. Hables Gray argues we need to find new ways of thinking about the intersection of science, technology, and living things in order to make better (or at least some!) choices about where the technoscience juggernaut is taking us.

He explores a variety of different areas where political thinking has either been ineffective or brushed aside by the exigencies of technoscience and capitalism: Frankenfoods, franken-species, cloning, in-vitro fertilization practices are all covered, as are transgendering and cyborgization in pursuit of sexual fulfillment. He does equal justice to all the complexities these collisions entail. That's why I didn't give the book the full 5 stars, actually, because not all these topics deserve examination at the same length. But that's a minor complaint, of course.

After reading Cyborg Citizen you will find examples of cyborgs everywhere. Of course, as tool users and builders and putterers, we've always been cyborgs -- as much shaped by our tools as the things we've shaped with them -- but the recognition of this fact and how it plays out across the realms of the civic, the economic, the scientific and technological as described in Cyborg Citizen will show the reader how far we are from Rousseau's state of nature -- if indeed there ever was such a place -- but that we may not have much further to go before the tools and cyborgs we build remake the world into place where we would not choose to live, indeed, a world where we may not be able to live. Not anti-techoscience, but rather, pro-thoughtful technoscience, Gray lays out the conundrums simply and argues that to be only pro or anti-techoscience is a luxury we cannot afford. Ultimately, he argues that as cyborgs we have to start thinking about what that really means.

This book contains a great deal of information about many variations with the Schlieman defense, but the author presents a good deal of material which is simply not correct when properly analyzed. There are additional books on the Schlieman, and while I don't know the quality of them, I would give one a try before settling on this one.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners........2005-08-16

I started using Mozilla when it was still in beta mode and then progressed to Firefox when that came out in beta. Since then, the only time that I use IE is when there are pages that will not render correctly in Firefox. I have also been successful in converting several people at work including my manager to Firefox. The rumor mill has it that our VP of Information Technology is a big fan of Firefox to the point that he is considering making Firefox the preferred browser.

This book covers Firefox and Thunderbird in two independent sections, which is only appropriate since they're two separate programs. The writing, however, is consistent throughout. Unlike other books that I have reviewed that have multiple authors, this book does not exude a conflict in writing styles. That and the easy-going style indicative of the Garage series make this an easy book to read and follow.

I was impressed that security is considered to be the most important aspect of Firefox, second only the actual installation. Chapter two covers the various aspects of security in Firefox, including cookies, pop-up blocking, passwords, plug-in installation, and others, explaining what each of these bits of the Internet are and how they can affect the user's privacy and security, making most of these issues understandable to novices.

The section about Thunderbird follows the same format. The first chapter explains how Thunderbird differs from Firefox as well as the multi-OS installation techniques. The book even explains all of the libraries that are necessary with Thunderbird on Linux. This is nice considering that libraries are often the bane of new, Linux users.

One thing that's odd is that Firefox and Thunderbird are not included with book. I know that combined they're only about 10 MB worth of downloads, which is nothing compared to service pack 1 for Internet Explorer 6 which comes in at a whopping 61 MB; but what better way to entice people to use Firefox than to give it to them right there? One of the small, three-inch CDs would have been more than sufficient to hold the applications and perhaps some of the plug-ins and third-party utilities. I know that 10 MB is not a lot, but I also know people who will not even download files that are that big when what they have (namely Internet Explorer) already works.

Firefox and Thunderbird Garage is a great book for anyone who wants to get away (or anyone whom you would like to get away) from Outlook and Internet Explorer. Lots of screen shots, an easy-to-follow format, and good organization make this a book that all, new Firefox and Thunderbird converts should have next to them at all times.

5 out of 5 stars Useful for novice to intermediate users.......2005-07-31

When it comes to Internet browser and newsreader software Firefox and Thunderbird are both considered to be one of the best available. Firefox is the browser of choice for me and has been for some time. This book is about getting under the hood and modifying your Firefox and Thunderbird to make them work the way you want them to and make your experience more pleasurable. Just like car enthusiasts will take a stock car and modify it to be their pride and joy, this book explains how to take the stock installation of Firefox and Thunderbird and make them work the way you wish a browser and newsreader would work. Filled with valuable advice and insight, the authors don't waste waste a lot of words trying to explain things you don't really need to know. Basically they point out an item that can be improved, describes how it can work better, and then walks you through how to implement the change. With multiple appendixes that are packed with very valuable information, Firefox & Thunderbird Garage is highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Mainstream.......2005-06-14

If you look at this book for what it is, it is a five-star book. This book is attempting to bring Firefox mainstream. The director of Engineering for the firm is the author. That says a lot.

The use of two-color printing is used very well. It makes for interesting and entertaining reading. Some of the material is elementary, but some of it contains tidbits that experienced users will find helpful. Some of it would take a beginner quite a while to find out.

Firefox is taking the world by storm and this is a good guide for quite a large portion of those new users. Competition is a good thing!

4 out of 5 stars Great for those new to browsers and email clients.......2005-05-06

This is an excellent volume for newcomers.

Unlike `Firefox Hacks' which has information for beginners, power users, programmers and web designers `F & T' is squarely and firmly a beginner's book - though it has some material useful for those who have been using the software for a short time. `F & T' provides its value by covering both the Firefox browser and the Thunderbird email client with just under two thirds of the book devoted to Firefox.

The book starts with a chapter devoted to the absolute beginning covering such topics as why and what is Firefox as well as installation, importing settings and bookmarks from other browsers and finding your way around the window. `F & T' then continues, explaining in a careful, step by step manner, all that a user might need to know about browsing the net with Firefox.

When I first noticed that `F & T' devoted almost twice as much space to Firefox as Thunderbird I feared that the Thunderbird section had been added to pad the book out without really covering the software properly. Fortunately my fears were unfounded, it is just that Thunderbird is that little bit simpler. Not being a Thunderbird user (I use Google Mail in Firefox) I fired it up and worked through the second section of the book. I discovered that `F & T' covers all the necessary information for getting the best out of Thunderbird for the average user and that little bit more that makes you feel like a power user.

The book finishes with four appendices that cover the shortcuts and menu commands for each program, one on hacking the preferences using about:config and editing the user.js file and a final one that covers digital certificates.

After reading this book and working through about half the chapters I have yet to find any egregious errors or appalling editing. Overall the style is good, though sometimes a little flippant and sometimes a little dry, it feels like there was a good strong hand editing. I find the `dirty' font used in some headings a little hard to read in the sidebars. I appreciate the stylistic quirkiness and `garage' feel but it might have been better a few points larger for my aging eyes. The body type is also a little light for reading in less than ideal lighting.

This is not really a book for geeks. I suspect that anyone who reads Slashdot would think it too basic and too plodding. Having once again found myself supporting "the average user" I'm realising that books for users who have no real interest or expertise in computers need to be basic and step by step. `F & T' seems to me to be perfectly pitched for a book I would recommend to my mother or a friend who wanted a book to help them move away from proprietary `net tools to these open source programs. The `Garage' series seems to be growing as an alternative to that other series of books for beginners, and one that doesn't feel the need to treat users as dummies. While the `Garage' series are definitely pitched at the beginner, they assume a decent level of intelligence and some ability to explore on your own.

If you would like a closer look at the book then you can visit the Prentice Hall site for the book for the table of contents, preface, foreword and two example chapters. Like all Prentice Hall book pages all of these apart from the table of contents are PDF files.

I currently work on a large campus supporting Macintosh users where I find the most common browser unstable and lacking in features and the most common email client just a little buggy and lacking in good support (neither are the free products provided by Apple). I think that a quick install and a copy of this book would solve a number of my problems. I would recommend this volume to all those who want a good beginner to mid level user volume on two excellent pieces of software. I would prefer to recommend this book to a beginner than any other on the topic I have seen as it doesn't attempt to cover too much of the learning curve, rather it goes for width, covering both pieces of software and more of each that might be of interest to the early user.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent source for those that are looking for a beginners .......2005-05-05

There are many good things about the book and it is an excellent source for those that are looking for a beginners guide for FireFox and Thunderbird. The book most definitely covers the basics of the applications and does so in a way that is very easy for an inexperienced web surfer / reader to understand and follow. The regular text is very well illustrated and the useful sidebars, Tool Kits and Fridges are extremely helpful providing just the right amount of information. The material is extremely practical without getting the reader bogged down in geeky details that are of little or no use to the normal every day user. The majority of the information presented in the book can also be found in the on-line help included with both applications, but readers will find value in the extra programs and links presented throughout the chapters.

I personally liked the sections on themes and extensions and the extension concept is one of the most powerful features of FireFox. Once the reader learns that they can add functionality to their browser with a simple download will change the way they surf the web. The authors cover a wide range of extensions, so you should find at least one or two immediate "must have" additions that you'll want to investigate just in the first few chapters of the book. Granted, the world of extensions and add-on software is constantly changing and what you see in the book may actually be superseded by something even better by the time you go on the web. But, the book will still give you an impression of what's available out there.

No matter which operating system your computer system runs under this book is for you. It gives the individual access to another on-line environment free of the problems troubling Internet Explorer. It is a great book and I would recommend it to anyone ready to surf the Internet.
