5 out of 5 stars Incredible...who wrote this?.......1998-07-02

I picked up the Job Vault, hoping I might be able to glean a bit of information. Not only was there EVERYTHING I could ever hope to wonder, there were even useful bits of information you never think to ask about until it's too late. I would very much like to talk to the authors of this book--to express the praise they so rightly deserve.

            Product Description

Everyone is a Nimby. Most people can stay comfortably in the closet. But now and then a power line, a convenience store, a new highway, or a proposed dump forces people to speak out, In this now-classic handbook, Jane Anne Morris explains what reluctant Nimbies can expect and how they can organize successful Nimby efforts. The first part of the book is a step-by-step outline of what concerned citizens need to do, from doing research, to mounting educational campaigns, to visiting sites and testifying at public hearings. The second part includes an informataive and entertaining dictionary of tips, tricks, and examples from past Nimby activities..

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Underappreciated.......2004-10-08

Written in plain English and chock full of useful advice, this book is still one of the best of its kind available. Jane Anne Morris writes mostly from personal experience, but also combines it with solid "academic" insights gleaned from her studies and insights as an anthropologist.

As Morris states in the introduction of this book, the NIMBY phenomenon is profoundly irritating to people accustomed to planning other people's lives. This book is an important guide that every citizen ought to have in their citizen's toolkit, and puts you on a more equal footing with the well paid consultants working for city hall and the developers in their rolodexes.

              Book Description

On August 23, 1990, CNN Executive Producer Robert Wiener landed at Saddam International Airport. Wiener's job was to orchestrate the network's coverage of the Gulf War from the Iraqi capital of Baghdad-a herculean task that involved everything from negotiating with difficult Iraqi officials to gathering news to lifting spirits (including those that come in bottles). All in a day's work for CNN's executive producer in Baghdad. But, in fact, nothing in Wiener's extraordinary career-not even stints in Vietnam or in Romania during the revolution-could prepare him for what was to come...... Live from Baghdad is the fast-paced story of Wiener's adven-tures in Iraq and a suspenseful, no-holds-barred inside look at how the media covered a simmering crisis.

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, but writer..........2003-10-13

This book is a good and even thrilling description of the first gulf war and how CNN reporters reported from Baghdad. That being said, this writer couldn't be more self-adoring and congratulatory, or obnoxious. At the end of the book, he compares Bush's intelligence to that of his pet cat. Whether you are a Bush-lover or hater, that is a disgraceful, horrible thing to say about the president of our nation and it reflects Wiener's generally high portrayal of himself and low portrayal of others.

2 out of 5 stars Dull from Baghdad.......2002-12-29

I found this book and thought it would be interesting to see what happened to the press during the war. Unfortunately for me all this author talked about was bureaucratic problems and drinking and smoking. I kept reading thinking that once the war started the book would pick up and at page 275 the war started but the book remained dull. I am assuming that the author is a much better TV producer then author or there is no way he would have a job with CNN.

The book was dull, there is no way around it. The author kept focusing on his drinking and the issues with this ministry and that ministry - not the most exciting. I wanted more detail on what it was like in Baghdad leading up to and during the war - - all the author gave us was what it was like for him in his hotel. Overall I would skip the book and watch the movie.

5 out of 5 stars A portrait of cooperation, luck, and determination.......1999-02-28

Live From Baghdad is one of those books that you just cannot put down. Giving the details of the struggle to get the story out before and during the Gulf War, this book is a tremendous personal account of what it takes to succeed in impossible circumstances. Robert Wiener and his crew made extreme personal sacrifices, sometimes in life-threatening circumstances, to get the story out and beat the competition. A great textbook example on how to negotiate what you need through respect and patience, being rewarded with sucess and a place in history. Great anecdotes about life behind the scenes make this a truly enjoyable read.

              Book Description

From his controversial coverage of Vietnam, which incurred the wrath of President Johnson but won him a Pulitzer Prize, to his unforgettable and daring on-the-ground reporting of the Gulf War during one of the greatest airborne assaults in history, Peter Arnett has established himself as the leading voice of American war reportage. In Live from the Battlefield, one of the most highly celebrated journalistic memoirs ever written, Peter Arnett gives us an engrossing account of the Vietnam era, as well as an indispensable portrait of battlefield reporting.

Live from the Battlefield captures the adventures, gambles, and glories that have marked this master journalist's life with a vividness and intelligence rare in any memoir. But more than that, Arnett provides an insider's view of some of the greatest and most tragic events of the century in a book of singular and enduring importance.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and gripping.......2006-08-07

I have read several reporters auto-biographies but Peter's is the most interesting and gripping. It is full of insightful detail that really makes you feel the excitement and terror of being a war correspondent.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Arnett: Best Wartime Reporter of Our Generation.......2001-12-12

For anyone with the least bit of interest in the Vietnam "police action" and the Gulf War, and honest wartime reporting from someone with an impenetrable sense of integrity, this autobiography is a "must read." Dr. Arnett's autobiography should also be required reading for all jounalism students as a measure of their worth and what it takes to persevere when the "real story," the story on the ground, may not necessarily match that of the "party line."

5 out of 5 stars Great war coverage.......2001-12-05

Want to know what really happened on the battlefield in Vietnam and else where? Read this book. As with most good journalists who stood firm maintaining the freedom of the press, and gave the public a true picture of what was happening abroad, he was railed on by the Pentagon and Whitehouse officials throughout his career. I've just read the book and something especially haunting was the last chapter. He is covering Afghanistan, the year was about 1993 after the 'freedom fighters' got rid of the communists and the entire country is ridden with corruption, violence, and warring factions. While waiting for his plane to Kabul he has a conversation with an influential Pakistani who blamed the chaos on the "mercurial American foreign policy". Saying "all you Americans cared about was destroying communism, and you welcomed extremists to the struggle and trained them to kill. But many of those people don't like you either, and you're the next target". On the very last page, Arnett ends the book as he is leaving Afghanistan, he writes: "The collapse of the Soviet empire, the end of the Cold War, had not brought harmony to Afghanistan, merely conflict and criminality. And the United States would reap a bitter harvest from the seeds of the Islamic revolution it helped sow. I was glad to be leaving Afghanistan but I knew that the story was not over". I would probably have to go back". As usual, the Pentagon and their right-wing pundits who attack people like Arnett as sympathizers, and conspiracy theorists, have been proven wrong by history, and the current events today.

              5 out of 5 stars A thrilling account by a master journalist........1999-09-21

A thrilling account by a master journalist who pursued `the story' for four decades over four continents. Guided by a determination to write only what he himself saw, Arnett sent out a steady stream of reports about what was actually happening in Vietnam, shrugging off the official military handouts as the "Five O'Clock Follies." His doggedness, bravery and resourcefulness in getting to where the action was resulted in Pulitzer Prize winning reports. He later became famous, if controversial, as one of the few American reporters to cover the Gulf War from inside Baghdad. An exhilarating read.

This book is a fascinating study of the historical and cultural contexts for everyday foods. Each chapter looks at the history of a fruit or vegetable that is a common part of American foodways. The writers fill out the historical background with intriguing discussions of the social and cultural norms that are associated with nine different foods and also with tobacco use. Readers can find out the real scoop on Johnny Appleseed and also discover why the cities of Fulton and South Fulton host a banana festival in two towns that straddle the border of Kentucky and Tennessee. The book is an excellent resource for information about common foods in Americans' diets, but it also provides a model for writing a social history of significant aspects of everyday life. You'll never eat an orange or a slice of watermelon in quite the same way after reading this interesting and well-written book that presents solid folklife scholarship in a digestible format.
