Book Description
In this updated and expanded second edition of her popular guidebook, Searcher columnist Irene E. McDermott once again exhorts her fellow reference librarians to don their pith helmets and follow her fearlessly into the Web jungle. She presents new and improved troubleshooting tips and advice, Web resources for answering reference questions, and strategies for managing information and keeping current. In addition to helping librarians make the most of Web tools and resources, the book offers practical advice on privacy and child safety, assisting patrons with special needs, Internet training, building library Web pages, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Recommended for the unique needs and problems of a librarian.......2002-11-14
Deftly edited Barbara Quint (Editor, Searcher Magazine), The Librarian's Internet Survival Guide: Strategies for the High-Tech Reference Desk by Irene E. McDermott (Reference Librarian and Systems Manager, San Marino Public Library, California) is a useful and "user-friendly" instructional guide, especially written for librarians concerned with how they can get the most out of computer search engines, how to find people and public records with a minimum of fuss, tracking down both current and dated news, cyber-shopping, web-based email, creating web pages, computer troubleshooting, and much, much more. Although written and especially recommended for the unique needs and problems of a librarian, this very practical primer can also come in quite handy for any lay user still adjusting to the onset of the information age and what school and community libraries can offer them.

Brian Barton May Have Written the Best Job Search Book.......2001-10-03
The irony is that Brian Barton's book is perhaps the best of its kind only because his suggestions are not common knowledge. The more copies that are sold, the less valuable it becomes. Nonetheless, this shouldn't deter those who desire in the meantime to take advantage of some excellent advice. ...This understandable question is adamantly and unhesitatingly answered in the affirmative.
Barton has many insights to share, and unfortunately in our increasingly "free agent" economy---most people will until retirement be job hopping every two to three years. I refuse to sneak out any bits of wisdom from "The High-Tech Survival Guide." The author deserves compensation for his efforts and valued assistance. This is a five star book, and you definitely should obtain a copy. However, I will add some points of my own. It is strongly recommended for all job seekers to use the Internet search engine "Google." One should immediately obtain tons of useful information by merely putting in the phone number of the possible employer. What if they only list their fax number in a newspaper ad to prevent being contacted by either phone or in-person? No problem, querying "Google" by inserting only this number will usually give you the name and address of the company. Also, don't make photostat copies to give to your friends after you purchase this book. They are morally bound to buy their own copy.
A hidden gem in the job search field.......2001-09-04
This book is awesome! It is concise and succinct. The tips are not buried in the midst of long, boring chapters found in most career oriented books. I like the pinpoint precision of the author's advice on breaking the code for finding employment. The advice on the purpose of the corporate Human Resources department is worth the price of book. I have personally experienced several of the things that the author references and now I know why. The best ten bucks I have spent in a long time. I recommend it highly!
Not Just for Dot-Commers.......2001-09-03
I picked up this book after a friend recommended it and I couldn't be more impressed. I was most recently in sales at large brokerage house here in Manhattan. I was "downsized" about two weeks ago. Even as a veteran salesman (with 10+ yrs. experience), this book helped me "sell myself" better than I ever knew how to in a job search. Now, I'm gainfully employed again in a company that I hope will weather the latest economic storm. This book is a fast read, I learned a lot and it was very easy to apply these techniques to my job search. I'm not a technology worker, but these techniques worked like a champ for my job search and I'd encourage anyone trying to land work to pick this up.
Readable, Fast, and Packed.......2001-08-28
I'm a technology marketeer who was laid off a few weeks ago. I read about this book in USA Today and decided to plunk down the money to get it. Let me say that this author explains more in twenty pages than most authors do in their whole book. He gives you techniques to get hired that I'd never heard about elsewhere (and I've read most of the books.) I liked the fact that it was short, and that I could get through it easily. The examples he provides help you make calls and get a hold of hiring managers, too. The book is designed for people that are positive and that have the energy to try these techniques. If you're a bitter, laid off worker, I'd skip this book since it's geared for people who are willing to try some techniques to get hired. If you're debating, I'd say go for it.
Useless.......2001-08-27
I am a recently laid-off software developer, and I bought this book thinking that it was going to give me specific information to help me with my search for a technical job. Instead what I got was a short pamphlet with useless generalities not geared to technical jobs at all. The web page for this also says that it can help you keep your current job, but there was no information at all about how to keep a job. I immediately returned this book.

Book Description
It portrays the numerous humorous exploits, misadventures and shenanigans of a youth while growing up in the East Texas backwoods community of Chinquapin during 1947-1955. While it is mainly intended as humor for the general reader of any age, CHINQUA WHERE? also includes the seriousness and realism associated with bittersweet memories and the disappointments of rural family life.
Customer Reviews:
A superbly written and informative autobiography.......2004-03-08
Chinqua Where? The Spirit Of Rural America, 1947-1955 is a heartfelt collection of short essays and memories about author Fred McKinley's life growing up in rural East Texas during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Life without indoor plumbing, central heating, or running water, and in a place where baths were in washtubs, the children went barefoot in the summer, and when the main forms of entertainment were wandering the woods, listening to a battery operated radio, or watching movies on Sunday afternoon, are all part and parcel of this vivid retelling of rural Texas childhood. A host of vivid impressions make for an unforgettable trip down memory lane and combine to make Chinqua Where? a superbly written and informative autobiography.
McKinley Captures American Spirit by Diane DeVaughn Stokes.......2004-01-31
As a television talk show host and producer, I get so many books to read and review. I sat down to read only a few chapters of this one and wound up reading the entire book! CHINQUA WHERE? replicates rural life ANYWHERE, not just in Texas. Fred McKinley's chapters reminded me of stories told to me by my grandparents about days gone by in rural Pennsylvania. Lots of history, lots of laughs, lots of love!
An Escape To The Past.......2003-12-05
I have just finished reading this book and I must admit that it has taken me a lot longer than I had expected. From the very beginning it was like stepping back in time to a place where I grew up. Back to a time when there were no freeways, telephones, computers or television sets. A place where a child could indulge in his own imagination, thinking his own thoughts and not what some Hollywood writers had put into his head. The reason that I took so long to finish this book was because I wanted to savor every single story in it. I grew up in this age and in the same general area, so I remember the court house at San Augustine. I also remember terms like "turtle hull" and I remember when cars had the dimmer switch on the floor. I had not heard the term "turtle hull" for so long that I had forgotten it. Each story was like a small mini-vacation that allowed me for one brief period of time, to escape from the hectic world that we live in and return to a peaceful, more carefree world. I am grateful to Mr. McKinley for writting this book and for helping to perserve these memories and for sharing them with us. I think this book would be excellent for the older generations to help bring back memories of the past and also for the younger generation to let them know that there really was a time when kids didn't have indoor plumbing, telephones, computers and television.
A "Down Home" Tale.......2003-11-19
McKinley's book, with its candid "down home" flavor provides a refreshing look back at a simpler time in American life. The author's narrative voice--that of the mischievous, carefree boy he was in those "good old days"--relates with warmth and humor his recollections of "the way things were" during his happy boyhood in rural Chinqua. A charming collection of anecdotes that celebrates the fundamental customs and values of rural America.
Book Description
For the first time ever, Bono-the biggest rock star in the world-tells his life story.
Bono's career is unlike any other in rock history. As the lead singer of U2, Bono has sold 130 million albums, won fourteen Grammys, and played numerous sold-out world tours, but he has also lobbied and worked with world leaders from Bill Clinton and George W. Bush to Nelson Mandela on debt relief, AIDS, and other critical global issues. He has collaborated with the same musicians for nearly three decades and has been married to his childhood sweetheart since 1982. His life, at all turns, resists the rock star clichés.
In a series of intimate conversations with his friend Michka Assayas, a music journalist who has been with the band since the very beginning, Bono reflects on his transformation from the extrovert singer of a small Irish post-punk band into one of the most famous individuals in the world; and from an international celebrity to an influential spokesperson for the Third World. He speaks candidly about his faith, family, commitment, influences, service, and passion. Bono: A Self-Portrait in Conversation is the closest we will come, for now, to a memoir from the iconic frontman of U2.
Customer Reviews:
I luv Bono.......2007-01-17
The book is helping me get to know Bono better. It is interesting to find out where he came from, and how he lived his life. He has deep intelligence, and a humanitarian lifestyle.
An Intriguing Look into the Life of Bono.......2007-01-11
This book is layed out in question/answer format making it very easy to leave off and pick up. It is a very addictive read with interesting and inspiring dialogue. There is an openness that the writer pulls out of Bono that reveals his faith, history and philosophy. From it, you discover that Bono is very human and surprisingly down to earth.
Excellent Book for U2 fans and non-fans alike!.......2007-01-09
This book is really well done. Most interviews tend to be short and highly edited without any real debate between the interviewer and interviewee. That is not the case here. Assayas asks some tough questions and challenges some of Bono's thinking, especially on Africa. I know the book is well written because Assayas often asks the exact follow-up question that I would ask. Nice to see a celebrity challenged.
If you like U2 and Bono, you will love this book, as it will give you a better glimpse of who Bono really is and what motivates him. If you don't like U2, you will enjoy this book too. Enjoy it or not, Bono has become somewhat of a ubiquitous figure, at least as rock stars go. This will help you understand him. It will probably also provide you with some ammo to attack him.
Certainly a worthy read.
Bono, the Philosopher .......2007-01-06
I have been a fan of U2 for well over a decade and love everything that surrounds the band. I must say that Bono is one of the more unique lead singers around in modern times. His presence on stage, rock star image and powerful voice make him and U2 a class act and able to cross any boundary musically.
As for this book, I was very excited about reading it and wasn't disappointed when I closed it. This book is literally an on going dialogue between Bono and author/journalist Michka Assayas. I believe the book was written over a two year span, and is set up interview style. Almost like a Rolling Stone and/or Spin magazine interview. It took me about a chapter to digest the style, but then it was smooth sailing.
I have always thought Bono was super cool, insightful and a true humanitarian. However, I never realized how philosophical he is. I have read some of his quotes or seen him on TV say clever or quick-witted things over the years, but some of his introspective in this book is amazing.
If someone is looking for a diatribe on U2 please look elsewhere. This book does cover many aspects of U2; it's members and history. Nevertheless, there are many other areas that are covered. Such as his support efforts in Africa, meetings with political figures, his relationship with his father and sociology.
My only quote-unquote problem with this book isn't on Bono's end but on Michka Assayas' end. He provides wonderful questions and narration where the conversations are taking place, but many of his questions to Bono are redundant. I can understand wanting clarifications on a subject. Consequently, many inquires are knighted with semantics and addressed to Bono several times throughout the book. It didn't appear it bothered Bono, he always had some perceptiveness on the topic at hand. Yet I felt there were other realms that could have been explored and discovered, instead of tautological matters being brought up time and time again.
I have always thought Bono was awesome, but this book showed me that there are many levels to this man. As for his intellect, I'm a pretty well read person having my masters in social sciences, but some of the topics Bono was talking about were over my head. In other words, Bono isn't the dullest crayon in the box. In contrast, he really does seem like a guy you can sit down and have a cup of coffee and sandwich with. I believe many pop and movie stars could really benefit from reading this book, it could help them put their feet back on the ground.
WHAT A WASTE OF $$!!!.......2006-09-05
I did not even finish this!!... I have No idea what this book was trying to get across... I give Bono credit for the hard work he is doing for Aids but I do not understand where or what this conversation??? was all about...Sorry Bono, I am a big fan of your music, but this book was so confusing and not at all enlightening.

Bad Fads
Mark A. Long
Manufacturer: Ecw Press
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 1550224913 |
Book Description
From poodle skirts, hot pants, and Lava lamps to Pogs, Pokemon, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bad Fads takes a fresh and funny look at the games, gags, dances, and styles of yesterday. This entertaining and nostalgic book unearths many short-lived popular trends from the past 100 years, covering fashion (go-go boots and Farrah Fawcett hairdos), collectibles (Rubik's Cube and pet rocks), activities (3D movies and drive-in theaters), and events (telephone booth stuffing and goldfish swallowing). No age group is spared these embarrassing reminders of the intriguing, bizarre, and just plain silly fads of past decades.

Bad Fads review.......2002-09-24
A great book! It covers generations of fads. Reading it reminded me of good times and bad clothing. I truly enjoyed the book and recommend it highly!
WE SHOULD KNOW!.......2002-09-11
I grew up with Mark Long, so I know this much first hand. He and I know a bad fad when we see one, or should I say, lived one. This book is a personal trip down memory lane, and memory lane has alot of potholes and speed bumps, in other words, it's a rough and painful ride. I found myself laughing out loud most of the time while reading through BAD FADS simply because of the images of myself and my friends living those fads, Mark included. I promise, reading this book can only make you smile. It's worth every penny. Thanks, Mark, for the memories.
A page-turner.......2002-07-29
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. A real walk down memory lane and a must read for nostalgia lovers. Great illustrations accompany the fads of the past century. Interestingly enough, many of these long-forgotten "Bad Fads" have reared their ugly heads in recent years, making what's old seem new again. This is one "bad" book.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Customer Reviews:
email and browsing should be earlier in the book.......2006-06-21
Indeed very basic. Stephen starts from scratch and gently guides the reader through the rudiments of computer usage. As in controlling a mouse to navigate thru a windowing system. Simple applications like word processing, spreadsheets and even building a database, are demonstrated. Using the Microsoft Office suite.
The example of using a database seems a little misplaced. Few total beginners would surely have such an explicit need. Even the section on using spreadsheets is questionable.
The last chapter of the book goes into how to use a browser and email. The author made an error by placing this chapter last. Email and browser are the first 2 killer apps of the Internet. Nowadays, when someone goes to a computer for the first time, she is likely to want to use these, instead of a spreadsheet, say. The chapter should have been brought forward to as early in the book as possible.
Plus, more space should have been devoted to explaining email and the browser. Each deserves its own chapter. Along these lines, Instant Messaging should also be prominently discussed. If need be, the section on making a database should be deleted to free up space.
What the author did was blithely go through the Microsoft Office package, and describe the main applications. Ignoring the reality of which are actually likely to be used by pure tyros.
