Blatant Inaccuracies in These Listings.......2000-09-03

My review is based on excerpts that appeared in the newspaper. I am a florist who employs 10 people; we have worked and networked with many florists, and can say conclusively that the rating of "florist" as the 5th least stressful job is totally unbelievable. Although this information reportedly comes from telephone surveys, there is NO WAY anyone spoke to a real florist to arrive at this conclusion! All of us have worked a variety of jobs, none more stressful than floristry. I won't go into the many reasons why this is so; my point is, this rating is so far from realistic that I have zero confidence in these ratings.

Greatest beginners book!.......2004-06-02

This is my best introductory to dc/ac electronics book out there and this beats them all. All of the other books are too complicated and missing quite a few important concepts. This book covers all of the basics and has a very nice approach for learners like me that has difficulty comprehending new material. Nice review and test questions in the back. Only main drawback is price... ouch

Socializing Security examines the early movement for worker-security legislation in the United States. It focuses on a group of academic economists who became leading proponents of social insurance and protective labor legislation during the first decades of the twentieth century. These economists--including John R. Commons and Richard T. Ely--founded the American Association for Labor Legislation (AALL). As intellectuals and political activists, they theorized about the social efficiency of security legislation, proposed policies, and drafted model bills. They campaigned vigorously for industrial safety laws, workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, and compulsory health insurance.

The AALL reformers were successful in some of their legislative campaigns, but failed in two of their most important ones, those for unemployment insurance and health insurance. In examining the obstacles that the reformers faced, David Moss highlights a variety of political and institutional constraints, including the constitutional doctrine of federalism and gender-biased judicial decisions.

The goal of the AALL reformers, Moss demonstrates, was not to relieve the poor, but rather to prevent workers and their families from falling into poverty as a result of accidents or illness. In favoring security over relief, economists in the progressive era defined and confirmed what has remained, for some eighty years, one of the essential values of American social policy. In concluding, Moss suggests that new policies may now be necessary in an economy in which falling wages and fewer jobs, rather than industrial hazards, are increasingly to blame for the precarious situation of the American worker.

The First time i saw this book i fell in love with it- but that was the big size version that i have been unable to find on anywhere! It is a wonderful collection of images but because of it's small size a great deal of the details are lost. This small size in this book is not worth purchasing unless it is just for a table topper.

being something of a '60's poster collector, this book is a classic of it's kind. I've seen none other as good. Excellent reproduction plates and very inclusive.

A Sixties poster reference.......2006-05-28

I bought this book when it was first published in the late eighties. At that time I had been collecting posters for about ten years. I was familiar with most of the Fillmoe and Avalon series, but this book opened my eyes to posters from many other venues I hadn't seen before. It's true what the other reviewers are saying about the concentration on 60's west coast posters, but that's where the best psychedelic artists were working. If you are a collector or are just thinking about buying a poster or two to dress up your walls, this is the first book to buy.(Make sure it's the full size version.) My only complaint is they don't show the whole Avalon series. But I think that's because of some copyright issues. All in all anyone interested in posters, the sixties or art in general will appreciate this book.

This little book is pretty cute, but did not know that I was getting the "mini" version. So, if you only paid $10 for this book - you are probably not getting the big $50 version of this book. Other than that, it is pretty cute. Not extremely useful, though.

very late-60s-San-Francisco heavy.......2005-11-02

When this book came out in the 80s, it made a huge splash and it was the first book of its kind. It was a bestseller despite its size and expense and everybody had to have it. But I felt cheated by the subtitle (From Presley to Punk) because it's probably more than 75% Bill Graham-era psychedelic 60s posters. The earlier and later stuff felt tacked-on, with limited examples and little perspective. The author should have stuck to his strengths, or done more research. As it is, this book is obviously fantastic if you're interested in the west coast 60s music scene, but kind of a disappointment if you're looking for an overall history of the rock poster.

This intriguing study of Mexico's participation in world's fairs from 1889 to 1929 explores Mexico's self-presentation at these fairs as a reflection of the country's drive toward nationalization and a modernized image. Mauricio Tenorio-Trillo contrasts Mexico's presence at the 1889 Paris fair--where its display was the largest and most expensive Mexico has ever mounted--with Mexico's presence after the 1910 Mexican Revolution at fairs in Rio de Janeiro in 1922 and Seville in 1929.
Rather than seeing the revolution as a sharp break, Tenorio-Trillo points to important continuities between the pre- and post-revolution periods. He also discusses how, internationally, the character of world's fairs was radically transformed during this time, from the Eiffel Tower prototype, encapsulating a wondrous symbolic universe, to the Disneyland model of commodified entertainment.
Drawing on cultural, intellectual, urban, literary, social, and art histories, Tenorio-Trillo's thorough and imaginative study presents a broad cultural history of Mexico from 1880 to 1930, set within the context of the origins of Western nationalism, cosmopolitanism, and modernism.

Sowing seeds.......2001-01-09

A few years ago I was at a friend's game night, and one of the guests pulled out a mancala set, at the same time putting the game down as "mindless". I took issue with her characterization and went on to beat her soundly, so I guess for her the game was mindless.

A couple of years later I read about Russ' book in the excellent book New Rules for Classic Games. Since it was out of print, I immediately went looking for it in used book stores and on used book websites. I couldn't find it anywhere. Finally, this new edition came out. I immediately bought a copy, and I haven't been disappointed.

The most interesting thing to find out is that the rules most mancala sets come with, which some people consider childishly simple and which do have a strong first move advantage, are not even found in this book. Different mancala games feature different rules for movement, capture, and objective, and most mancala sets come with a set of rules combining the simplest features from each of these categories, resulting in a shallow, boring game.

Mancala Games goes a long way toward rectifying that. Not one game, but many different games played on similar boards (think of all the games you can play on a rectangular grid), mancala games vary from children's games to adult games of astonishing complexity. Some are better than others--you won't like every game in this book, but you'll definitely have hours of fun trying them all out before you settle on a few favorites.

The author includes strategy tips for a few of the games, usually when introducing a group of games with a fundamentally different style of play, but for the most part the book is just a catalog of rules. The only reason I didn't give it five stars (and without any competing titles, I'd recommend it to game buffs in any event), is that the games could be catalogued better. Each game could have a standard heading that included the style of capture, the objective, a complexity rating, etc. Or this information could be captured in a table at the end of the book that matrixed each game with its key features.

Also every game is given its own heading, so that a game's description is frequently followed by two or three other games with descriptions that read "This game is played by the So-and-so people of Such-and-such country by the rules just given for the last game." Several entries could profitably be collapsed into one entry, and a rules-and-variations approach (like that found in many games compendiums) would make it easier to see how games are related to each other.

Nonetheless, the rules as they are presented are quite clear. This book is an absolute must for board game fans and families.

Superb game of intellect.......2000-03-25

I've read the older copy, and if this is anything like the original, then every Mancala player should get it. Not too hard to learn the basics, and really easy to get into the harder stragadies. The game itself provides hours of fun. I learned this game from my Philipino friends, and eventually learned 9 different games using the same board. (I'm so good, I beat the philipino grandfathers who has been playing this game for years) The variations are endless. Give it whirl.
