many problems.......2003-01-26
this book has many problems..
firstly.. it is overly informal...
secondly.. the beginning chapters on the physics and chemistry of semiconductors (ptype n type) are garbage... do atoms really have 2,8,8,8.... configuration in it's energy levels??? NO... we assumed that in grade 10 chem.. just to make it easier.. and the stuff on energy levels is pathetic also... very basic chem/physics...
there are 3 levels of approximations for semiconductors devices... 1st is ideal, 2nd is practical... 3rd is complete... for college level students.. complete approx isn't used.... they use 2nd approx for doing analysis.. and 1st for doing troubleshooting only... yet the author jumps around.. .for clippers clampers and voltage multipliers.. the author does his analysis based on the 1st approx....
then for other sections.. he lays out pages upon pages of formulas.. that really should be common sense (KVL, KCL).. and he sets out formulas for both 1st and second approx.. it's just superfluous...
then the end of chapters exercises are alway slike "refer to the circuit of fig. 4.6.. and use the spec sheets for the 1N400X series of diodes on page 34.. blah blah blah"... it's so annoying flipping around.. i would often do the wrong circuit... for a question..
the book is just not well designed....
I want a professional textbook.. now one for kindergarten kids...

Yawn! Bedtime Reading for Insomniacs .......2005-07-29
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Few things are more frustrating than lying awake at night. All insomniacs know the cardinal rule for getting some Zs: Don't just lie there waiting for sleep - do something about it.
In Yawn: Bedtime Reading for Insomniacs, author Ellen Sue Stern invites you to:
Lean back into a down pillow and consider what golf strategies should be employed in the rain.
Nestle in more deeply as you commit to memory the particulars of the "correct" way to eat spaghetti.
Yawn softly while you peruse the fine print of airline ticket sale literature.
Consider in detail the physiological reasons behind male pattern baldness.
Pepeat what NASA tells its astronauts to help them fall into weightless sleep.
You might not remember everything you've read, but you may find the answers to your dreams - a good night's sleep.

A point missed.......2003-02-17
Yes, mostly this stuff is as boring as she asserts. It is all public domain stuff, often lifted directly off the web, then compiled to fill a quick and easy book. She misses the point several times - a chapter of The Odyssey is included largely because she does not get it.
But the most egregious error is the chapter on John Glenn's conversations with Capcom during the last orbit of his first flight. She fails to set up the context (I do not think she was aware of it). You see, John and Capcom are having a discussion about John's heat shield, which may have been damaged during takeoff and therefore the capsule may burn up during re-entry. Capcom wants John to take manual control and then not jettison the jet pack covering the heat shield. But they do not want to say why. So they do this, John obeys, reports a "fireball" and is incommunicado for the next several minutes. Given recent events, and the fact that we have three astronauts on the space station whom we do not know when, how or if we will get down, maybe her choice is not as sleep inducing as she thought.
SATIATED.......2001-05-25
Ms. Stern is a saint. My wife and I have both had bouts with sleeplessness due in part to our "work-a-day" schedules. YAWN appeared on the bed stand one night and Tillie (my wife) and I have read one another to sleep using Ms. Stern's wit and wisdom on many occasions. After tapping into a bit of Ellen Sue's psyche with YAWN, Tillie brought home another of Ms. Sterns books,"Loving the Imperfect Man." WOW! New understanding, rekindled relationship, and new found love. No more sleepless nights. We are happy! Thank you Ellen Sue Stern!
YAWN.......2001-04-15
Yet another con job. What are Sterns cedentials??????????? I have tried to read Sterns sophomoric attempts of realationship enlightenment: "Loving an Imperfect Man" and "He just doesn't get it". Now she attempts to make a buck claiming she can help you sleep. Stern must be well connected to get this drivel published.
better than melatonin and valarian.......2000-11-08
When I can't sleep I turn to this book. It knocks me out and at times I find myself laughing myself to sleep. A great gift for insomniacs or a reference tool for annoying partners who want to talk before bed. This will put them to sleep in a heartbeat. Yawn is a real sleeper!

Fill in the Gaps.......2007-01-13
This book is written as a series of concert reviews but it is much more. The author describes events leading up to the concerts and, in some cases, explains why certain concerts were more important to the band's development than others.
I find the ability to follow a particular song's progress from introduction to regular part of the band's set one of the most interesting aspects of this book. If you are interested in the evolution of Led Zeppelin's live set, you will likely enjoy this book. If you're looking for a band biography, you'll probably be happier with "Hammer of the Gods" by Stephen Davis or "Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin - Uncensored" by Richard Cole with Richard Trubo more than this book.
A must for every Zeppelin fan.......2006-11-09
I find this book to be very interesting and so full of information, I think of it as an encyclopedia for all that is Zeppelin. It's a great addition to my collection..
Good new information.......2006-02-20
I own several Led Zep books so it was nice to get my hands on this one by Dave Lewis - one of the band's keepers. The good news for Zep-philes is that there is new information. This book makes a good complement to Luis Rey's Zep concert book (now out-of-print I believe). It doesn't try to be academic but rather anecdotal - so that we get a much better picture of the actual live environment that Zep lived in at the time.
It includes reviews from various news sources and on-the-ground accounts of what happened here and there. Would have been nice if the book was a little longer, but it aims to be concise rather than overwritten.
Lewis also tries to be as balanced as he can be. Sure, there's room to disagree on this and that, but this is a good if not essential companion for Zep collectors keen on learning more on the band's live legacy.
Various Information.......2005-10-13
If you want to know Led Zeppelin, listen their music and see the performance, there is nothing better way.
However the book like this may be helpful to see closely thier works. Led Zeppelin, as you know, they are not present anymore. Books can be a help to get information.
You get the some back story of making each album and each numbers. Most interaseting section is Live Performance reference. You know which number is performed in live. I was surprised there are many numbers, which were mostly my favorites, they are not performed in thier present time.
If you want to know some references in addtion thier albums, take it.
very well written.......2000-06-19
this book was a close up view of how the lifes of led zeppelin was lived during the time from discovery to stardom. it gives a good account of how each member affected the sound of heavy metal. it shows their trials and troubles and the good times to. i talks about how they dealt with groupies and how they meshed well with the bbc so i give this book a good review.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2003-12-06
I'm 15 and all I can say is this book is really, really cool/excellent/awesome etc...from pre-zeppelin days to post zeppelin solo projects and the reunions, it's totally comprehensive, I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewers - it's cool if you have even one Zeppelin Bootleg, and it's also interesting to see what they have to say about the shows the newly released live material was taken from. My dad saw Zeppelin twice so it was cool for him to find his shows.
So if you saw Zeppelin live, have any live recordings whatsoever, or are just curious, I highly recommend this book. It'd be nice if they came out with a new version making note of the material that's come out since it's been released, but even if they don't, I still feel it's a totally complete edition.
Bootlegers Dream.......2001-04-17
For anyone who has a modist size Zeppelin collection of live recordings this book is a must, It has an incredible breakdown of hundreds of shows including track lists and commentary on the play quality as well as remarks on Robert Plants witty comentary between songs. I found myself going back and listening to many of my bootlegs to see how the author's opinion of concerts compared to mine. It was also nice because It helped straighten out some of the songs from the compelation discs I have, correcting the perpatraitors generally incorrect slipsheets and liner notes.
All you need to know about the BEST live Rock-n-Roll band.......1999-10-01
Dave Lewis and Simon Pallett have provided readers with a treasure: a look at every known live performance of the world's greatest rock band, Led Zeppelin. The book is full of reports of what, where, and when the band played, how good the concert was, concert facts, and many samples of the wisdom of Robert Plant. They even recommend the best bootlegs, perfect for us die-hard Zepp fans. The authors also include innumerable concert photos, many of which don't appear in other books. Any Zeppelin collection is incomplete without this book.
Excellent and detailed history :setlists, photos, and more........1999-08-14
This book is a dream come true for any Zep fan. The set lists and descriptions of every Led Zeppelin performance are great. If you are not sure exactly when or where you saw that Zep concert, this book has the information you need. Loads of pictures of the band, venue posters, backstage passes and more. Looks great on the coffee table too.
THE essential guide to live Led Zeppelin!.......1999-03-02
This book is an essential guide for any fan or collector of live Led Zeppelin material. It has lists of shows, set lists, photos and good text. A MUST!

Book Description
The economy and global competitiveness are the bottom line for society and governments, or so says conventional wisdom. But what are the real needs that must be satisfied to live rich, fulfilling lives? This is the question David Suzuki explores in this wide-ranging study. Suzuki begins by presenting the concept of people as creatures of the Earth who depend on its gifts of air, water, soil, and sun energy. He shows how people are genetically programmed for the company of other species, and suffer enormously when we fail to live in harmony with them. And he analyzes those deep spiritual needs, rooted in nature, that are also a crucial component of a loving world. Drawing on his own experiences and those of others who have put their beliefs into action, The Sacred Balance is a powerful, passionate book with concrete suggestions for creating an ecologically sustainable, satisfying, and fair future by rediscovering and addressing humanity’s basic needs.
Customer Reviews:
A life changing, life enhancing read.......2006-06-12
The Sacred Balance: Rediscovering Our Place In Nature by David Suzuki offers a conceptual understanding of the human condition and an ecologically sustainable, satisfying and honorable way of life in the world enveloping us all in this day and age. Providing readers with a complete grasp of nature and its most fulfilling values, The Sacred Balance intuitively presents a new direction with which one might rightfully prosper in balance with nature and one's surroundings. As a unique and concise interpretive understanding of nature and each individual's placement amidst an ever-growing and progressing nature, The Sacred Balance is very strongly recommended as a life changing, life enhancing read.

Book Description
"Consume and compete!" The message of the economic treadmill is loud and constant. But in this seminal work, David Suzuki argues that the real bottom line, and society's challenge today, is not debts and deficits, but the need to live full and meaningful lives without destroying the Earth's biosphere, which supports all life.
Suzuki explores the physical, social, and spiritual needs that form the basis of any society that aspires to a sustainable future and a high quality life for its citizens.
Those fundamental requirements are rooted in the Earth and its life support systems. They are worthy of reverence and respect; they are sacred.
Customer Reviews:
an eye-opener.......2005-04-26
It is hard to say whether all Suzuki's facts are absolutely valid or not, especially when his discussion turns to what the Earth's true carrying capacity for humans is - but that is slightly beside the point here. The most important part of environmentalism is to wake people up and make them realize the effects that their everyday actions have on the world around them. Suzuki does this by explaining 1) how everything in this world is connected, 2) pollution of one area will invariably affect another area, and 3) we really do not understand all the elements needed for the proper functioning of the environment. This should make any person reflect on their own actions. The world's environmental problems (which in turn are deeply connected to human problems) will not be solved by governments' imposing regulations and all this Kyoto b.s. (not that Kyoto is bad... it's just a very small step and it is disgusting to see that both USA and Canada are stalling), change will only come when each individual makes sure their OWN actions do not make the situation worse. Buy organic when you can afford it, reduce or cut out meat entirely from your diet (I think 80% of farmland is used to keep livestock alive), buy local products, recycle, compost, reduce energy consumption. This isn't hippy crap - hippies never had that much self-restraint - this is about being a responsible person so that your grandchildren will be able to go outside and play without gas masks. Suzuki's book was what opened my eyes when I was 17... and it should do the same for most reasonable people.
Excellent, enlightening and a "should read".......2005-03-25
This is an excellent and enlightening work about the general state of the planet, humanity as a species, where we belong on the planet and what it means to us in terms of sustaining us as a species for the long run. Well-written and divided into chapters which could be summarized as humanity, air, earth, water, fire, community, love, spirituality and balance, this book paints an accurate state of the world picture with facts as well as metaphors. It always presents its concern about the greater picture without losing sight of the details. A great balance of general science and spirituality, with just enough facts and personal stories of many to make the points convincing, this book also is threaded with impacting and eye-opening quotes and poetry from a variety of sources and people. A superb book, overall, from someone who has seen a lot of what he wrote about. This book should be on the curriculum for senior year high school so that the future generations can get a good grasp of the world as they become contributing adults in that world which they will own and determine, more impacting than ever, for future generations. No matter how much or how little they will get from it, every bit helps at a time when that is truer than ever in the past from every one of us living today. Don't get me wrong, though, it's not the book that's profound. It's what you do with what you learn from it which will be.
for a sacred balance..........2004-12-14
While Mr Suzuki is an interesting educator, and hopefully a concerned citizen, I do question some of his facts. If everyone here wants a true sacred balance, read from both sides of the fence...pickup eco-imperialism by paul driessen, and the skeptical enironmentalist by bjorn lomberg. I'm not saying to take their stuff as gospel, but at least read them. They are eye openers... and both are extremely referenced and researched. One of them is endorsed by the the actual founder of Greenpeace, and the other is written by a former greenpeace member.
Seamless, just like its subject.......2004-10-02
John Muir wrote something like "if you try to isolate one thing in nature, you find that it's connected to everything else." (Sorry for the paraphrase, but I can't find the original quotation.) Suzuki's book puts us back in the natural scheme of things (where we belong) and finds the inevitable threads to physical health, mental health, spiritual wellbeing, and, by inference, a public policy agenda. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
Sane Science.......2004-10-01
Humanity is creating problems of a size and magnitude unprecedented in Earth history. We are razing the forests, causing mass extinctions, and have befouled earth, sky and water with with deadly toxins. While clinging to faith in science and progress, deserts quietly creep in on our venerated civilization. Within the human economy (community sounds too hospitable) as well, we see signs of collapse: some "800 million people go to bed hungry every night; and in wealthy industrialized nations, chronic unemployment, violence, social alienation, drug abuse, crime, unhappiness and the disparity between rich and poor appear to be rising. The sense that something is wrong is pervasive... People seem to feel helpless and pessimistic about the future." All of this, it must be added, in an era that many historians and pundits tout for "unprecedented scientific and technological progress." Suzuki believes that, although abundant with information and technique, we lack a working worldview and have utterly disconnected ourselves from the living planet. "What we need," he says, "is a new kind of science that approaches the traditional knowledge of indigenous communities." What we need is a new story, sense of place, deep connection and meaning - and that's exactly what this book provides. Suzuki's life-affirming narrative explains who we are, where we came from, and our proper place is in this complex, interdependent world. A beautiful blend of ancient wisdom and modern scientific thought, The Sacred Balance provides nothing less than the complete picture.
A MUST READ

The Sacred Balance: Rediscovering Our Place in Nature
David Suzuki ,
Amanda McConnell , and
Adrienne Mason
Manufacturer: Greystone Books
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 1553651669 |
Book Description
In this extensively revised and enlarged edition of his best-selling book, David Suzuki reflects on the increasingly radical changes in nature and science — from global warming to the science behind mother/baby interactions — and examines what they mean for humankind’s place in the world. The book begins by presenting the concept of people as creatures of the Earth who depend on its gifts of air, water, soil, and sun energy. The author explains how people are genetically programmed to crave the company of other species, and how people suffer enormously when they fail to live in harmony with them. Suzuki analyzes those deep spiritual needs, rooted in nature, that are a crucial component of a loving world. Drawing on his own experiences and those of others who have put their beliefs into action, The Sacred Balance is a powerful, passionate book with concrete suggestions for creating an ecologically sustainable, satisfying, and fair future by rediscovering and addressing humanity’s basic needs.

Information might want to be free; but, why should we free it? We've got enough trouble keeping track of all the petabits that already run around untethered, and risk a computer counterrevolution if we let the situation get much crazier. Information architect Richard Saul Wurman swept the field clear in 1989 with his groundbreaking book that foresaw the problems of data clutter and proposed a radical new means of organizing and presenting knowledge humanistically; for the new century, he has revised it substantially as Information Anxiety 2. This book is sparklingly clear and readable--it'd better be, after all--and offers insight not only to designers, educators, and content developers, but also to anyone who needs to communicate effectively through dense clouds of facts. If Wurman occasionally indulges in New Age-y pop psychology, his analysis is never muddy, and the more hardheaded reader will forgive him soon enough. The discussion alternates between describing the deeply stressful task of absorbing poorly organized data and exploring solutions that require a bit of rethinking, but that reward such an investment with improved understanding and, maybe, a state change from information to wisdom. We could do worse--if we don't pay attention to Wurman and his colleagues, we almost certainly will. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
A follow up to the first edition, Information Anxiety 2 teaches critical lessons for functioning in today's Information Age. In this new book, Wurman examines how the Internet, desktop computing, and advances in digital technology have not simply enhanced access to information, but in fact have changed the way we live and work. In examining the sources of information anxiety, Wurman takes an in-depth look at how technological advances can hinder understanding and influence how business is conducted.
Customer Reviews:
Of all things, a postmodern manifesto.......2006-12-12
Although this book is officially about design, communication, and business information--for which it probably is only a mediocre, quasi-random collection of personal musings--I unexpectedly found this text to be a fabulous introduction to the postmodern mindset. It is a post-modern manifesto, of sorts, calling us to plunge into the new information age with courage, creativity, and hope. It is "real-world" philosophy set in a business context.
Wurman demonstrates that not only have times in fact changed, but we can change with them and even flourish. Rather than a threat to our old, familiar "modern" way of thinking, the new "Information Age" can be an exciting opportunity for creativity, relationship, and learning.
This book is an example of how we CAN get over our anxieties or doubts about postmodernism and start engaging the world and people around us in a more meaningful way.
And one more thing,... as a person working in Information Technology, I wish more people in IT would read this book. It could save us some grief in our deliverables and methodologies.
TED + BI = W .......2006-11-08
Technology, Entertainment, Design + Business Information = Wisdom
Wurman is the founder of the acclaimed TED conference, where the most brilliant minds meet once in a while to discuss creativity applied to virtually all existent fields in the world. Only for this fact he already deserves 5 stars.
For the title of this book he deserves another 5. The book is written in a very interesting way, it really reminds an information explosion. It is organized and chaotic at the same time, presenting opinions from different authors in the sidebars and reminding an interactive dialog.
The subjects discussed are diverse and rich, including corporate behavior, information (organization, communications, usage, design, and importance), creativity, technology, and many more.
It is an insightful and interesting book; I think it is underrated with 4 stars.
Risk of getting a headache here.......2006-01-10
If you want a kind of phone book full of thoughts and grousing and preaching on information and how to handle it, "Information Anxiety" is for you. But don't expect something you can actually "read like a book." A mishmash indeed, and disappointing. Wurman seems to project his own information anxiety onto the reader, assuming the reader suffers from it, when that may or may not be the case. I personally have no trouble passing up reading newspapers, magazines, websites, etc. I read what I want or need to read. If I don't read everything that I could possibly read, so what. Life goes on, and has other sources of fulfillment. In fact, maybe people like me are just not in his intended audience. I can see how his books might be valuable as a source of ideas for improving various communications. But, *very* ironically, the format he uses screws up what could have been much more useful material if it were organized better, and streamlined, and easier on the eyes. For the life of me, I don't understand why someone who wants to reduce information anxiety would put non-linear information (e.g., quotes) in the margins, so the reader doesn't know what to read first, and may easily lose his or her place. It's like he throws information at you compulsively and without restraint while telling you about the woes of being deluged with information. What's up with that?
One of my top 10 favorite business books.......2005-03-16
The father of "information architecture" beautifully displays specific strategies for fighting the war against info-glut. It's on the short list of recommended resources in my book The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Course in Business Writing and Communication.
Still Relevant.......2005-01-08
Although written in 1990, this book is still relevant because it deals with the basic principles on how to handle the information overload. We need this now more than ever with 24/7 TV news, 24/7 internet alerts, email, text messaging TiVo, etc. etc. the basic principles are easy to apply with lots of shortcuts and it doesn't really matter the form the information bombardment takes.
