This book tells the story of the lives of migrant black African men who work on the South African gold mines, told from their own point of view and, as much as possible, in their own words. Dunbar Moodie examines the operation of local power structures and resistances, changes in production techniques, the limits and successes of unionization, and the nature of ethnic conflicts at different periods and on different terrains of struggle. He treats his subject thematically and historically, examining how notions of integrity, manhood, sexuality, work, power, solidarity, and violence have all changed over time, especially with the shift to a proletarianized work force on the mines in the 1970s. Moodie integrates analyses of individual life-strategies with theories of social change, illuminating the ways in which these play off each other in historically significant ways. He shows how human beings (in this case, African men) build integrity and construct their own social order, even in situations of apparent total repression.

Shaping Manhood Among South African Miners.......2003-08-20

"Going For Gold" has drawn attention for its frank, insightful and fully-informed treatment of male miners' sexuality, including homosexual relations (known as "mine marriages"). But there is much more to commend Moodie and Ndatshe's exploration of what it means to be a man, and to act like one, in South Africa. Their intimate knowledge of the region combines well with participant-observer data, which must have been challenging to collect given the subject and circumstances. The result is one of the richest current studies of migrant life in Africa, encompassing changes in the labor process, ethnic identity, class formation, drinking and sociability, violence, and resistance to harsh work and living conditions. For example, the sections on faction fights between Sotho and Xhosa miners reveal that these are not merely age-old primordial hatreds. They reflect complex antagonisms rooted in struggles for employment, occupational status, class consciousness, political affiliation and situational identity, which all have discernible recent origins. There isn't as many stories as I thought I would find in here, but they are so funny. It isn't just funny things that happen during sex; there's a variety. It had me laughing out loud at how silly some people are. I would buy this used. $9.95 seems like too much for a small book.

Great read for Petty fans, or just music fans.......2007-04-10

Tom Petty has become one of my favorite musicians of late. His body of work is immense and there are some really great, lesser-known songs buried in his catalog. This book is a series of interviews with Petty over a few years. The author is a knowledgeable musician and Petty fan, and it comes through in the insightful questions he asks of his subject. As for Petty, he's a very down-to-earth, likable guy who just loves to play music. In the two parts of the book, he basically goes through the story of his career and then tells the stories behind many of his songs. While I drifted off here and there when he got into the details of who did what in the studio, most of the stories are very interesting, particularly the section on the Traveling Wilburys, where Petty talks about working with the likes of Dylan and Roy Orbison. And while Petty is definitely a rock `n' roll star, this bio reads less like your typical sordid tale of a rock band and more like the story of a group of serious, hard-working friends. Anyone who's ever seen Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live knows the extent to which his professionalism pays off onstage--he is a showman if there ever was one. Petty is not arrogant about his accomplishments, but he has no false modesty either. He gives and takes credit as it is due, and never comes across as anything but honest. I'd highly recommend it for any Petty fan, or just a fan of rock.

Being a fan of the under 3 minute pop tune, I became a Tom Petty follower early on after hearing the Heartbreakers live. A couple of years ago I reintroduced myself by attending a live show with the sans Stan Lynch line-up with Howie Epstein on Bass and vocals. Great Great band and killer tunes. What more can you ask for. I really enjoyed this book and
liked the casual vibe of the interaction between Petty and Zollo. It

I liked the book but came away wanting to know more about Tom's personality. The author doesn't delve deep into Tom's inner thoughts. Tom tries to talk about his life with Dana and how happy they are but sadly the author seems to cut him short while he's embellishing. I'm not sure if it's the interviewer (author) or Tom but I felt that the book could have had more depth into his persona rather than the Chronological sequence of his music career. For example, I would have like to know Tom's feelings on girls when he started out early in his career and if that is reflected in his songs, "The Waiting" or "Here Comes My Girl" or if it was more of how Mike Campbell felt about them because he wrote alot of songs too. The book was worth reading if you are a fan but I'm waiting for Tom to write his own book. Tom, are you listening?

A Technician Overview.......2006-08-31

A majority of the conversations center on songs from a musical specialist standpoint: discussions re: melodies, chords, etc. While this is probably extremely interesting to those "in the know" it does become somewhat laborious for those not in the know. There are a few nuggets re: Tom's life etc. - would have preferred more information in this area as well as his opinion of other top musical acts. A majority of the background info is already available via the booklet included in the Playback box set. Nonetheless, it is a quick and easy read and a must for all TP fans.

Since tabletop fantasy role-playing games emerged in the 1970s, fantasy gaming has made a unique contribution to popular culture and perceptions of social realities in America and around the world. This contribution is increasingly apparent as the gaming industry has diversified with the addition of collectible strategy games and other innovative products, as well as the recent advancements in videogame technology. This book presents the most current research in fantasy games and examines the cultural and constructionist dimensions of fantasy gaming as a leisure activity. Each chapter investigates some social or behavioral aspect of fantasy gaming and provides insight into the cultural, linguistic, sociological, and psychological impact of games on both the individual and society. Section I discusses the intersection of fantasy and real-world scenarios and how the construction of a fantasy world is dialectically related to the construction of a gamers social reality. Because the basic premise of fantasy gaming is the assumption of virtual identities, Section II looks at the relationship between gaming and various aspects of identity. The third and final section examines what the personal experiences of gamers can tell us about how humans experience reality.

For the gamer enthusiast, this compilation of essays should serve to pique your interest. A collection of scholarly and semi-scholoarly essays, Williams, Hendricks, and Winkler (all contributors) focus on exploring three core aspects of the social gaming experience: Social Reality, Identity, and Experience. As there is currently not much Literature that attempts to qualitatively study the sociology of the gaming subculture (with the notable exception of Fine's: Shared Fantasy [1983], University of Chicago Press); the collection of essays published in this text serves to expand the range of studies on this subculture.
Having said that, 10 essays on the above mentioned three subject matters can be found here. Of those 10 essays, less than half significantly contribute to expanding on current gaming subculture theory. The ones that are most relivant to expanding the field of study take conventional Foucaultian, Marxist, and Psychoanalytic, and gender study theories and apply them to the gaming subculture (which they have done quite nicely)
In short, the compilation presents a smattering of well written and structured essays among a small majority of niche-filling (and somewhat non-relivant to the casual gamer) essays.

This book is FULL of amazing ideas for integrating technology into the classroom. There is a section at the end of each chapter that invites you to look at the book online where you can find resources for your area of teaching. I had to buy this book for a class I was taking and it is a book I will be keeping. Great stuff for the beginner and expert tech integrator.

It seems like the department of education decided that teachers need an information technologies class to earn a credential and then they scrambled around to find an author to write a supporting text. So much of the information is common knowledge - software, hardware, world wide web etc . . . Seems like a waste of time and money. If you are in a post-bacc program and you don't know what an operating system is or how to open an application, then you probably should get out while the getting is good. However, there are a few nuggets of information that are applicable. For example, in the software chapter, there is a step-by-step description of how to design a classroom website. It is very detailed and informative. I might photocopy that section before I sell the book back. Hope this info helps.

I like using this text because it is well laid-out. The diagrams are easy to read, follow, and learn from. The explanations are clear and focused. Each chapter has a summary and review. The on-line text complements and reinforces the text by supplementing with more information, by offering links to websites, and by including interactive summaries and quizzes for each chapter.
