From the supplier: The 'Working Under Different Rules' project of the National Bureau of Economic Research Inc looked at other advanced countries to determine what labor market problems they shared with the US and what approaches they use to overcome such problems. Wage inequality, worker training and representation, income maintenance and social insurance systems, and incidence of poverty were compared. The US showed lower unemployment but suffered greater wage inequality, decline in worker representation, and extreme poverty. A study of foreign experience can help the US situation, the project concludes.

I am a complete novice but I recognize this is the required study program. You must also buy the CD/DVDs that go along with the book.
Not cheap, but an outstanding learning tool. I would recommend that you read a book on music theory and composition before buying this set to get the most out of the program.
Multi-Media companion discs to The Study of Orchestration Book (6 CDs).......2007-03-16
This 6-disc set provides audio, video and music, and some musical scores to support the examples in The Study of Orchestration Book. The videos show players playing the various orchestral instruments to illustrate performance techniques. The audio examples let the student hear the various orchestration techniques being discussed. The examples and the book in general are very detailed and absolutely worth the purchase price. I highly recommend the book and CDs to everyone studying orchestration.
The way the discs are used is there is a main menu where the user can select which instruments to view and listen to the examples. There was a strange problem with the discs I received. The digital material and menu do not match the book examples or the content printed on the CDs. Strangely, CD 4 is blank (I've tried to read it on several computers) and the main menu doesn't have any pointers that reference CD 4. Also, the other 5 discs do not contain the contents listed on the CD, many examples are missing. Both my book and the discs are listed as "3rd edition" and the cover graphics are identical. I believe this is a manufacturing problem from the publisher and therefore other sets may also exhibit this problem. Perhaps the digital content on the discs was from the 1st or 2nd edition. I'm still working with the vendor I bought the discs from to get a new set of discs and I'm hopeful the next set I receive contains the correct digital content.
If you really want to know how to orchestrate via textbook.......2007-03-08
Every composer is aware that there are countless orchestration books- and every one will tell you basically about how to do the job. Every book will have your standard instrumentation, how they function mechanically, and ranges, or something to that effect. Of course this is important.
However, when it comes down the actual art of Orchestration, elements usually left to experience are taught through Samuel Adler's CD accompanied book. No matter how close a description of an effect, or sound is, the luxury of having a dictionary of them at hand is amazing.
Overall, this is a great concept and book- and I don't believe that there is any book out there that does what it does that well.

I studied classical piano and composition myself for most of my life and have professional degrees in both. When I write my music, I need to look up stuff now and then, or brush up my knowledge. This book is perfect for this! I wish I had bought it years ago.

Horrible.......2004-02-11
First of all, I would like to say that the text and cds for The Study of Orchestration are excellent (with a few exceptions). However, this workbook is horrible. The exercises make no sense and the instructions for doing them are unclear and confusing at best. Often these exercises include things that were not present in the book or concepts are presented in a manner different from the text. There are a huge number of mistakes in the workbook, especially in regard to track numbers on the cds (sold separately). Avoid this at all costs. It has nothing to offer. Any competent teacher should be able to come up with their own exercises that would have much more practical value. Unfortunately, I am in an arranging and scoring class where the teacher seems to think this book is the best thing since sliced bread. What a moron.
Entirely Dispensible Companion to an Indispensible Textbook.......2001-03-19
Each time I've taught orchestration I've used Samuel Adler's The Study of Orchestration book and CD. Although I have reservations about the text (which I've enumerated in my review here at amazon.com), I think it is the best available text and the accompanying CDs really make the set invaluable. I've never been comfortable with the workbook, however, and in fact have never used it for class. It is not entirely without value--for example, the passage on string bowings is very helpful (Worksheet 2), and for a teacher this provides material ready at hand for exercises in transposition, clefs, harmonics, and the like, which are generally satisfactory. Much of the workbook, however, takes an historical approach to the teaching of orchestration which I am uncomfortable with for most students. Adler uses "Listen and Score" exercises repeatedly, in which the student is instructed to listen to a passage (included on the CD set that accompanies the text) given in piano or short score and instructed to orchestrate it exactly as they heard it. While these can be helpful in the early stages, I can't understand why one would want to encourage a student to write for 2 horns in C and 2 horns in Eb as Berlioz did. Modern instruments have transcended many of the difficulties that earlier composers faced, and to learn to score for those instruments in the style of a particular composer may be of some historical interest, but little practical worth. There is the decided advantage for the teacher of answers being either right (the way composer X did it) or wrong (anything else)--but the nature of orchestration belies that duality. Often in orchestration many choices are equally right; but if a passage must be notated choices must be made. To make a particular choice does not invalidate the viability of an alternate choice.
Other exercises are downright quirky. Worksheet 14 calls for the student to transcribe a Bach organ prelude for four percussionists, all playing non-pitched percussion. While this might be a lot of fun, I doubt it is the best way to learn the use of non-pitched percussion for orchestrational purposes.
Missing almost entirely is any material on the wind band. Where winds are considered, they are considered only as the wind section of an orchestra. True, the set is not titled The Study of Orchestration and Band Arranging, but since most students (in the US, at least) will be much more likely to face bands rather than full orchestras in their professional life, such a section would be of great worth.

This workbook is a must-have for the serious student of orchestration and all musicians who would like to get familiar with the process of "sounds" in the orchestra(symphony/small ensembles).A great way for developing,through listening and writing practice, the "mind's ear and eye" relationship when scoring and getting music down in score paper.The workbook/text book/CD edtion combination is the next best thing if you can't get to a real live classroom instruction set up!And even if you can,it will surely enhance the studying process and would surely last a lifetime.Unbeatable.Essential.Get it!

Mandatory Reading for the Black Community.......2005-03-06
This book is mandatory reading for ages 13 and up in the Black community. Ms. Wallace puts into words what our culture has experienced in thought, action, and deed since our ancestors came over on the slave ships. The language is raw and very explicit, but so is our torrid relationship with ourselves and others outside of our race. I can readily see why she experienced so much backlash from the Black community back in the day...she exposed our 'ills' long before we were ready to deal with them. So, if you're ready for the facts, read the book; the truth that follows (and what you do with it) is of your own making!

Wonderful Help for EMC 8.......2006-07-14
I have the Dummies book for EMC 8 and it leaves many questions unanswered or gives wrong information.
This "In A Snap" book is really wonderful. It shows you what to do through pictures of the screens and simple, easy to understand text. It is extemely easy to understand and allows you to get right to work on a project.
It is just about the easiest computer instructional book I have seen. Just as the title states "Teach Yourself" EASILY.
Don't be a Dummie.......2006-07-07
I purchased this book on Easy Media Creator 8, last April. I have been using Roxio's Easy Media Creator since version 5. The software is very powerful but, at times, can be a bit frustrating. The knowledge in this book will smooth the project path quite a bit.
Just inside the front cover is "Contents at a Glance", every subject or software function has it's own tab which makes using the book as a reference manual very quick and easy. I found the organization of the book and the presentation of the material to be straight forward and easy to understand.
If you are new to the software, I would recommend reading the 25 page introduction, "Start Here", first. If you have experience with the software, the book is organized so that all of the information you will need for your project is in one place (follow the tabs).
