Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The true people's history of the mines.......2000-03-13

The best part about this book is that it was written 20 years after June originally arrived in Bolivia to write a book on the miners. Now she has returned and reviews the history of those 20 years and shows where today's miners, family and culture stands. This book is not a comparision of the past with the present but rather a building upon a tremendous history and struggle.

For the person not familiar with the mines and miners of Bolivia this is an excelent introduction. Here one meets a world turned upside down and inside out. Mountains are filled with spirits and miners, men ans women - side by side - fight for a better life. June enables one to share in the peoples' long history of struggle through insightful first hand accounts. She also shares her personal experience while reporting the stories and brings a more human element to the work.

June has done an excellent job identifyng and bringing to light the intricate web of cultural, political, and economical elements of Bolivian mining. I myself have relatives from the mining regions of Bolivia and wish to congratulate June on her depth and understanding of the people she presents. It is rare to find someone that has the ability to understand the cultural nuances that have a 5,000 year old tradition and see how the still prevail, albiet sometimes hidden or changed, in today's world. I wish to congratulate her on taking the time to understand the people she was studying and not perpetuating common stereotypes, of disorder, ignorance or misbegotten religious views.

I highly recommend this book to all!

3 out of 5 stars The Horrors and Triumphs of the Bolivian Tin Mines..........2000-02-02

This book was read by myself and 15 others as a requirement for a senior course at University...

I found Nash's depiction of the Bolivian tin miners excellent. Not only did the author manage to complete a traditional anthropological ethnography, but she has presented it in a format which has made it interesting to anyone.

This book should be read by anyone studying or interested in Anthropology, inequality, or the trials and triumphs of Latin America...

                    Book Description

Labor unions in France and the U.S. opposed certain restrictionist immigration policy measures in the late twentieth century, whereas they had pressured for restrictionism in the early twentieth century. Leah Haus asks why unions changed coalitions. Haus argues that one needs to focus on the challenges of internationalization to explain this change. Many union leaders consider economic internationalization and/or the internationalization of human rights as undermining the effectiveness and/or desirability of certain restrictionist measures. At the same time, many union leaders see support for certain non-restrictionist measures as a way to facilitate organizing immigrants, which is an alternative strategy for improving wages and work conditions.

The book is correct and contains accurate tablature for all the songs as far as I'm concerned. I can now play all the songs I am capable of, although the end solo for Flake is the trickiest thing I've ever attempted in my amateur life.

Where rock scribes are concerned, you've got provocateurs of the Lester Bangs school, academics of the Greil Marcus variety, and the nuts-and-bolts sorts who, while perhaps less colorful wordsmiths, excel at capturing their subjects by putting them at ease. Early Rolling Stone contributor/editor Ben Fong-Torres may be the best known and most durable member of that third school. Not Fade Away gathers 34 Fong-Torres profiles and interviews ranging from Woodstock-era pieces centering on Sly Stone and Janis Joplin to '80s articles on Eddie Murphy and Tom Hanks. Despite the occasional foray into film writing, Not Fade Away centers around rock & roll. Solid journalist that he is, Fong-Torres can stretch from James Brown to Neil Diamond, from Bob Dylan to Iggy Pop--all without straining. Vignettes update and add color to Fong-Torres's out-of-the-archives articles. --Steven Stolder

                        Book Description

From 1969 to 1981, Ben Fong-Torres was one of the first "star" writers on staff at Rolling Stone - the "scruffy rock journal" that metamorphosed into one of the most powerful voices of a generation. Now in this fascinating book, Fong-Torres revisits his most intriguing celebrity interviews and profiles, and - for the first time - tells the revealing stories behind the stories, the stars, his writing process, and life at Rolling Stone.

Fong-Torres is a talented writer, but readers who are interested in rock 'n' roll history may wish to skip this book's chapters on people like Diane Keaton, Neil Diamond, Annie Leibovitz, Tom Hanks, Eddie Murphy, and (!) Rodney Dangerfield. (Steve Martin's is worth reading, however.)

Not to worry, though, this volume does contain actual interviews and profiles with music industry folks like Ricky Nelson, Three Dog Night, and Dick Clark. You can probably see the problem with this book's title and cover image by now. And you might understand why I got excited when I came to the book's piece on Iggy Pop. Unfortunately, it was just a two-page description of an appearance Iggy did at a Tower Records.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Ben Fong-Torres.......2001-06-23

A better title would be the Best of Ben Fong-Torres. This book is a collection of articles he wrote for "Rolling Stone". Some of the people written about in this book are Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, The Jackson 5, Janis Joplin, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, The Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones, Santna, Ricky Nelson, and many others. What really makes the book worth reading is that he gives information on what he had to get the interview and what happened after. Sometimes, the behind the scenes information are as good as or even better than the article.

4 out of 5 stars Title Says It All.......2001-04-30

If you weren't around in the 70s, or you want to "relive" this era, Ben Fong-Torres' book is a good place to start. It's a collection of many of his Rolling Stone feature articles, along with a brief update of the personalities involved. Having "come of age" in the 70s, it brought back memories of my own and it gave me insights into some of the most famous rock personalities of the 70s and early 1980s.

Fong-Torres has an excellent writing style and "captures" a little bit about what made a lot of these musicians "tick." His articles are enjoyable to read or re-read if you've seen them before. While part of the title (A BackStage Pass to 20 Years of Rock n Roll) may seem cliched, it fits here. Fong-Torres in his Rolling Stone articles managed to catch a glimpse of an era now long gone.

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing but maybe it was my fault.......2000-10-19

I bought this book after seeing Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous". That was an exceptional movie and I thought I would relive the era through Ben fong-Torres, who was featured in the movie.

The book is really a reprint of many of his stories in Rolling Stone which the reviews probably stated and I didn't focus on. I would have preferred his story of being close to the Rock and Roll scene. Reading some of the articles that were over 20 years old became somewhat boring and outdated. I did learn quite a bit in some of the stories and Fong-Torres does provide some narrative on each story although it is limited. Overall though, I'd take a pass on this one and look for another if you are looking for a good book about rock in the 70's and 80's.

                        5 out of 5 stars Good.......2000-08-13

I thought this was a good, literate book. I only read the stuff I was interested in, but there was plenty of that (especially the George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger profiles). Frank Zappa once said that rock and roll journalism is "Writers who can't write, writing about musicians who can't play music, for readers who can't read." And he was/is correct for 99% of rock journalism. This book is the 1% of rock journalism for which that statement does not hold true. A solid book.

This is an excellent book by a voice of experience. Some will argue with the idea of a book of "positional" openings all beginning with 1. e4, but really, there is no reason why you cannot play in a more positional manner with e4, and with a more attacking manner with d4. I think Gufeld's idea is that you are going to be able to control your repertoire better with e4. 1. d4 has so many things to be prepared against, but with e4 you are much more likely to know what you will face. To wit, you will generally face 1...e5 and 1...c5. The Scotch Four Knights is a fine opening, and if you study it, you will know it better than black. Frequently it will reduce to a scenario where you have the two bishops and doubled isolated c-pawns. The resultant scenario is rich with "positional" ideas, but in an open setting. Against the Sicilian, 2. c3 may or may not appeal to you, but clearly, it is a good move, and one that does allow you to determine the contours of the game. Personally, I prefer the Closed Sicilian, and Emms' Attacking with 1. e4 has an excellent chapter on the Closed Sicilian. The Gufeld book is very well put together, withe variations clearly distinguished with well-placed boldfaced fonts. Also, with each new line, all the moves to that point are re-written, which is very helpful. Finally, each chapter has a couple of illustrated games. I think this is an outstanding book. I could go on about his recommendations as black too, with the Classical Sicilian and King's Indian being great suggestions. Excellent book!

                        1 out of 5 stars Not a good book.......2002-01-18

I bought this book along with the companion "An opening repertoire for the attacking player" and I have to say that I was thoroughly disappointed. The lines given are not particularly popular. Not only that, I crossed referenced some of the lines with other books and a database, and the results were depressing: hardly ever did white get and advantage and black's choices were rather limited. There are very few explanations. If you are searching for a complete repertoire, this is not it. You will not understand why you are playing certain moves.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent value!.......2000-03-21

This book is great! With white the authors suggest e4 and against the Sicilian, the Alapin (I love this opening because it's simple to play and tends to really annoy Sicilian players); against e5, the four knights Scotch game; against the French, the Tarrasch variation (Nd2); against the Caro Cann, the Short variation; against the modern/pirc, the Pirc-Ufimtsev defence; against the Alekhine, a system with Nf3. All these openings are relatively slow and positional in nature but ultra solid and with dynamic potential. What's more, they are played regularly by the leading GMs of today. For black against e5 they suggest a classical sicilian with Qb6 in the Sozin variation and the interesting Bd7 in the Rauzer variation. The main ommission is that they don't deal with the closed sicilian with Bg2 nor the grand prix attack but instead refer you to another book that they wrote. Against d4, they recommend the King's Indian Defense and the chapters on this opening alone are worth the price of the book. GM Gufeld, the co-author of the book, is one of the leading experts on the King's Indian. There are also chapters on how to deal with the annoying Trompowsky and Torre attacks. Lastly, the authors suggest ideas on how to react against 1. c4 and 1. f4. Overall the book is well-written and well presented. Any player who likes positional play and is not not a strong master or above will greatly benefit from this book. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars great practical advice from a master.......2000-02-26

Although this book might best be seen as a companion volume to An Opening Repertoire for the Attacking Player, I think it has great merits on its own. If you already favor 1.e4 and have devleoped a good tactical game this book will enhance your game by helping to add positional elements to your play. If you do not open with 1.e4 the book still has value because it includes solid responses for black to both 1.e4 and 1.d4. As a club player I have found the sections on The Kings Indian and The Sicilian worth the price of the book.

1 out of 5 stars Con Book of the Year.......1999-12-28

This book would surely get first prize for the con book of the year. I'm sure the publishers and authors are sharing a big laugh at the readers' expense. Imagine an opening repertoire for the positional player that suggests 1.e4! Virtually all the defenses selected(like the Scotch Game, Sicilian, King's Indian, etc) would make a tactician's delight. And the authors' claim that they could be played in a quieter fashion doesn't obtain, for in most of the lines suggested your opponent could steer the game to fierce tactical battles! To boot, the book is also dishonest : in the chapter on the Sicilian for black, after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 the authors say, "well, white can play other lines than 2.Nf3, but to learn those you will have to buy our other book." In a nutshell, this book should be entitled "An Incomplete Repertoire for the Positional Player Who Does Not Want to Play Positionally!"ÿ

                          Book Description

The computer gaming industry is bigger than the film and music industries and is growing faster than both of them put together. The industry is also changing fast. The typical computer gamer is in his mid 20s and female gamers make up one of the faster growing parts of the market. New developments in sociability and interactivity are also transforming the industry. This is the first major study of brands and gaming and shows huge opportunities for brand development

This book gives a broad overview on the gaming industry and heavily uses Electronic Arts in most of its examples. In fact, I would not be surprised if it was endorsed by EA. Because of this narrow focus, the book largely largely ignores other companies that are doing innovative things in gaming. To this effect it does nothing to predict the success of Guitar Hero. And although EA has successful titles, it also fails to present the many other ones that have failed. It paints an all too rosy picture.

The frameworks used to analyze the industry are also too sweeping and broad with little analysis involved. The prose is oftentimes subjective. All in all, the industry could have been represented more objectively and analytically.
