Book Description
Elizabeth Faue traces the transformation of the American labor movement from community forms of solidarity to bureaucratic unionism. Arguing that gender is central to understanding this shift, Faue explores women's involvement in labor and political organizations and the role of gender and family ideology in shaping unionism in the twentieth century. Her study of Minneapolis, the site of the important 1934 trucking strike, has broad implications for labor history as a whole.
Initially the labor movement rooted itself in community organizations and networks in which women were active, both as members and as leaders. This community orientation reclaimed family, relief, and education as political ground for a labor movement seeking to re-establish itself after the losses of the 1920s. But as the depression deepened, womenperceived as threats to men seeking worklost their places in union leadership, in working-class culture, and on labor's political agenda. When unions exchanged a community orientation for a focus on the workplace and on national politics, they lost the power to recruit and involve women members, even after World War II prompted large numbers of women to enter the work force.
In a pathbreaking analysis, Faue explores how the iconography and language of labor reflected ideas about gender. The depiction of work and the worker as male; the reliance on sport, military, and familial metaphors for solidarity; and the ideas of women's placethese all reinforced the representation of labor solidarity as masculine during a time of increasing female participation in the labor force. Although the language of labor as male was not new in the depression, the crisis of wage-earningas a crisis of masculinityhelped to give psychological power to male dominance in the labor culture. By the end of the war, women no longer occupied a central position in organized labor but a peripheral one.

Interesting !.......2007-07-27
The best one... in my opinion..
"All U.S. Presidents, from the start, have had blue eyes."
Every single one!
Now what is up with that? Very strange and it cannot just be called a coincidence.
I am interested in hearing others thoughts on this. If you think you have a good explanation add your comments to this review please.
This book is horrible.......2007-01-25
I decided to buy this book after seeing the cover. My mother taught me when I was younger not to do things like that, because sometimes you'll be wrong, but she was barely literate and didn't know who my father was, so I ignored her and this book arrived in the mail.
The first sign that something was wrong was the way the mailman was walking when he brought this enormous package up to my house. It says that it's 220 pages, but these fancy art designers fail to mention that they are incredibly thick pages, so the book itself weighs about thirty pounds. It isn't even a good centerpiece, either, because its existence means you're worried about ice breaking, and my friends got offended. They wanted to know why I didn't feel comfortable around them, speaking and interacting in the banal, juvenile ways I had been doing for years, but I was tired of so I bought this book which I thought I could read in the privacy of my room.
Anyway, the facts, as mentioned by a bunch of other reviewers are either way off or stupid. "'Birds of a Feather' do NOT actually flock together!", "It is against the law for a baby to occupy a uterus without a signed permit in Tallahassee, FL, after a mistake in the text of the cities [sic] laws!" This stuff isn't even readable, and sometimes it borders on dangerous. What is this supposed to be, "Carmel was invented in the middle ages as an experiment by Gypsies to start blood libel myths about themselves, after they saw how well it worked for the Jews!", or in their "Hand Myth" section (at least fifty of the super-thick pages are devoted specifically to "hand myths", which I thought was a joke at first, but it kept going and going and going) they told me that my little boy was more prone to psychosis because his ring finger is slightly shorter than his pointer finger, and that he was possibly retarded because his hand could stretch over his face.
Looking back, I would probably have preferred that this book been lost in the mail and I just got ripped off. Then I could be steamed at Amazon and these NICOTEXT goons, but now I'm angry and I've read this book. Talk about a double whammy. Which, by the way, the book says was originally an obscure term for bestiality in Middle Persian.
This book is excellent!!!.......2007-01-10

Different kind of book.......2006-06-20
This book had some interesting tid-bit facts. Would have been nice if I had received it as a gift rather than purchasing it myself. I read through the book once a lot of the facts I had already known and some were very suprising.
terrible.......2006-02-28
Save your money, if i could get mine back i would want it doubled. Filled with spelling and grammer errors (page 27 "The Big Kahuna Burger" was not only eating in pulp fiction". I'm pretty sure that should be eaten, and a comma not a period at the end.), i run across several facts that are just plain wrong (page 17 "In Fairbanks Alaska a law forbids elks to have sex on the streets"... ok first off elks isnt a word, its just elk, and second off there are no Elk in fairbanks alaska, the law is about Moose. I live in Fairbanks, its a well known law from the early 1900s with a funny story about why it is a law, but there are NO ELK in interior of Alaska) Save your money and buy a book that at least went through a spell checker or a grammar check, and for God's sake, if you are gonna call them facts , at least make sure they are facts!
Book Description
Did a thoughtful creator speak the whole universe into existence? What is the age of the universe?
Most Christian students today are familiar with Bible "stories" but don't have a clue how to combat the prevailing anti-Christian philosophies. Beginning with God and His Word as the standard, Something from Nothing demonstrates how the biblical witness teaches that the age of the universe is not as old as other theories contend. The authors stress the purpose of origins study as an approach to knowing God in a deeper way. Something from Nothing also demonstrates how all issues raised by evolutionists can be answered not only by the Bible but also by scientific data and research.

Book Description
Something About Nothing is a collection of outrageous letters that use up so much space but make so little sense. Innocent people only doing their jobs are handed letters written by Adam Palmer that ask absurd questions, make irrelevant remarks and give worthless compliments.
Yet, these letters somehow remain sane enough to elicit responses, which are just as enjoyable and humorous. Something About Nothing is filled with letters that say something but will leave you with nothing.

Too much but not enough.......2007-09-22
A huge book, but I found it very lacking. If you have a question, it might be in here, but I never found answers to most of mine. Almost impossible as a guide to anyone who doesn't already know a lot about Pro Tools. Very disappointed.
Very good reference for beginners.......2007-02-22
This is a very good reference for newbies to pro tools like me. The tutuorial dvd that came with my ignition pack was so drab. I honestly fell asleep 3 times watching it before I finally made it all the way through. This book allows you to go at your own pace and build a solid foundation.
practically useless for the beginner.......2007-02-13
I have some working knowledge of protools but can't find answers to most of my questions in this book. The index is probably the most useless part--this book tells me all about what certain functions are, but nothing about how to use them. Waste of money.
Good for beginner and intermediate - great reference too.......2006-10-24
I've been a ProTools user for a few years (Digi 001 and now Digi 002 with ProTools 7 LE), but never took any courses or purchased any courseware. I could do basic tracking, but when it came time for my first large CD project I knew I needed help. Although the tutorial DVD that comes with ProTools 7 LE has some great material in it, the manuals never really seemed to answer my questions.
This book was invaluable in taking the step from "basic user" to semi-pro user. It's well written in a direct and friendly tone with anecdotes that show how the author has "been there too" and shares a musician's perspective on recording.
From understanding microphones and setting up a small studio through recording and even into mastering, this book is an invaluable reference for anyone who is ready to get beyond the basics. It covers step-by-step processes for many common tasks and provides some background on why things are the way they are - which leads to better user comprehension. Not only can you perform the task, but you also have a better understanding of why it is done the way it is.
Nothing Dummie About It.......2006-09-07
Paid much more for this at the Digistore. Very well written & organized. Tons of info & extra recording tips not just for Pro Tools.

awsome.......1999-06-11
i have not yet read the book but from what i have heard it sounds like it is just what i need to make my first vb project
Extremely basic primer for new Visual Basic programmers.......1999-02-04
I would recommend this book as an excellent introduction to Visual Basic. It covers a lot of fun subjects, including sprites, backgrounds, animation, sound effects, scrolling. But it is not at all advanced enough for seasoned programmers. Newcomers to Visual Basic might appreciate its coverage of a few basic Windows API functions, but there are really no general-purpose wrapper functions that are suitable for building a game library. Indeed, the book covered each subject separately, when it would have been more useful to build upon previous subjects. As a result, I was disappointed to find at the end of the book there was no "game programming library" like I expected. I really wanted a function to generate the "mask" images for animating sprites, instead of having to draw the masks manually. The book discussed this, but I could not find a good working example that I could use. However, building the library in VB from all of the examples on the CD (the book covered 16-bit VB3) I was able to paste together a shoddy game library. All in all, great intro to VB...poor coverage of game programming.
Excellent book (mainly for VB4.0).......1998-12-06
When I first got this book, the latest edition of VB was 4.0. This book was anything and everything you could possibly need. Without this book, I would never know VB like I do today!! If you are planning on buying this book now and you are using a 32-Bit version of Windows, then you will need to change some of the lines of the API code, but otherwise this is an excellent book!!
Buy It for yourself and for a beginning Friend!.......1998-12-05
Well, this is just about as good as they come. It gives code AND examples. One word describes this book: Perfect
Awsome!.......1998-12-05
This book is essential for any beginner to slightly advanced programmer! Everything about it was good. Don't Listen to others who say the code doesn't work, Yeah AFTER you add some gibberish to it it won't but everything works and the book is GREAT

TCP/IP Network Administration (3rd Edition; O'Reilly Networking)
ASIN: 0596004109 |
Book Description
The DNS & BIND Cookbook presents solutions to the many problems faced by network administrators responsible for a name server. Following O'Reilly's popular problem-and-solution cookbook format, this title is an indispensable companion to DNS & BIND, 4th Edition, the definitive guide to the critical task of name server administration. The cookbook contains dozens of code recipes showing solutions to everyday problems, ranging from simple questions, like, "How do I get BIND?" to more advanced topics like providing name service for IPv6 addresses. It's full of BIND configuration files that you can adapt to your sites requirements. With the wide range of recipes in this book, you'll be able to
- Check whether a name is registered
- Register your domain name and name servers
- Create zone files for your domains
- Protect your name server from abuse
- Set up back-up mail servers and virtual email addresses
- Delegate subdomains and check delegation
- Use incremental transfer
- Secure zone transfers
- Restrict which queries a server will answer
- Upgrade to BIND 9 from earlier version
- Perform logging and troubleshooting
- Use IPv6
and much more. These recipes encompass all the day-to-day tasks you're faced with when managing a name server, and many other tasks you'll face as your site grows. Written by Cricket Liu, a noted authority on DNS, and the author of the bestselling DNS & BIND and DNS on Windows 2000, the DNS & BIND Cookbook belongs in every system or network administrator's library.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-10-24
I can't think of anything negative to say about this book. It's certainly not an outright replacement for its bigger cousin "DNS & BIND", but it is clearly written and well-organized; an excellent "how-to" resource to get you up and running quickly with a minimum of fuss and background theory. I'd like to see an updated version which covers DNS-SD in the near future.
Magic bullet for quick DNS fixes/receipies.......2005-05-13
If you need to understand the difference between BIND 9 or Windows AD DNS and BIND 8, this is not the book for you. But if your management decides to tell you about the imporant new product launch on 20 servers in a new domain they just bought and kept under wraps to stun the competition which they need implemented in some novel way that requires a DNS twist, THIS will save you.
It will also save you if you are really a Windows admin, but you need to configure something in BIND. Or if you need to do something in BIND that you haven't done before.
Or if you don't care WHY you have to do task X, Y and then Z to get the desired result, but you need to know HOW? This is your book.
The WHY is in the BIND book from O'Reilly.
A 'MUST HAVE' for new DNS Administrators.......2003-03-28
This book has turned out to be the best investment I've made so far in my 20 year IT career. I've always trusted O'Reilly books for their detailed accuracy. However, for the task at hand, I didn't need a book to explain WHY things work... I needed one to tell me how to GET them to work. This book was perfect! It doesn't replace the DNS and BIND, 4th Edition, but is a great compliment... Actually, I'm finding the 4th Edition a perfect compliment to the Cookbook.
A NICE PROBLEM-SOLVING ORIENTATION.......2003-02-10
"DNS & BIND Cookbook" is a problem-solving text, which Network Administrators will be glad to read. It displayed utmost rationality in its simple and concise way of dealing with most problems, which arise from Domain Name Systems. It also exposed all the factors, which are likely to escalate Berkeley Internet Name Domain problems, before providing their remedies in a clear sequential order.
Net Administrators (as well as voracious users of any of the major Operating Systems) would appreciate the inclusion of an easy-to-digest chapter on Internet Protocol version 6, (IPv6). This book clearly made the mark!
Apart from the rather summarized information, which I noticed on two of its chapters, (i.e.: 'Create Zone Files For Your Domains' and 'Use Increment Transfer'), there is nothing that I will hold against this book. Cricket Liu did a very good job in writing it.
Little good things here and there, but not enough on BIND9.......2002-11-02
I bought this book because I saw it had the "Upgrading to BIND9" chapter. However I found very little information on how zone files are different in the new version or what advantages BIND9 offeres over its predecessors.
