5 out of 5 stars How do I live without Anselmo? I want to know..........2001-06-13

I don't know how much longer I can make it. The sand in my internship hourglass is quickly running out. I make my copies and open the mail now with an anxious eye on the clock, knowing that only a few precious days separate me from the comfortable world of the internship and the prospect of trying to get a real job. With that blasted internship interview, I had Anselmo. Without him, I don't know where this cruel process will take me. My days have lengthened into long, dark periods of listless wandering. I arrive home from my internship, and stare at the peach hued walls of my ugly eighties themed apartment, and wonder, "where in God's name is Anselmo when you need him?". If it has been a good day, and I have been able to muster enough petty cash to buy a small bottle of Karkov Vodka, I am usually able to drive the terrible thought of facing life after internships without Anselmo in three or six quick, putrid shots. But on normal days, those very numerous, substance

free normal days, I stare at the television, muttering...hoping that his wise but kind face will appear. Hours of syndicated garbage later...I fall asleep, disappointed, dejected, and unwilling to face the morning. Where have you gone Frank Anselmo? Interns turn their lonely eyes to you..whoo, whoo, whoo. God Bless you please Mr. Internship, Frank Anselmo's left and gone away, hey, hey, hey.. So, like General Zod in the sequal to an American classic, I demand to see Superman! I must enter the real world and I demand guidance, and I want it from the man who brought me so much success in the realm of the internship. Nothing else, nothing less, will do. The last time around, I had chapters like "So...You're a Philistine", "Places To Live In NYC if Mummy Won't Pay", and "Dealing with Blasted Lunches: An Intern's Guide to Gastronomy". You remember the magic? I do, and I want more of what Anselmo's cooking. So dust off your keyboard King of Internship Kings, give another Bible, Lord of Entry-Level Lords. We need you. I...need you.

5 out of 5 stars This blasted book....changed my life.......2001-06-06

Finding an internship can be strenuous, but not with John Anselmi's easy-to-use guide. Anselmi's style is efficient and beautiful. His insight, top-notch. If John Anselmi were here right now, I would like to play a little jazz trumpet for Anselmi. He is the best, the best, the best. In fact, his thoughts are so original, so intriguing, I would like to subscribe to his newsletter. Thank you, undefeated, undisputed, King of internships!

5 out of 5 stars Blagev is bad!.......2001-02-04

I thought the book was absolutely wonderful, but I must comment on the writing style of the previous review, Denitza Blagev. I think her writing is awful, but her terrible writing (especially the creative stuff), only serves as a contradistinction from the brilliant writing in the internship book.

Maybe Ms. Blagev should try a writing internship. Then her writing might be more pallitable.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic gripping tale of the kinds of internships to get.......1999-09-15

This is the most incredible book in the whole wide world. What a page turner! I couldn't put it down. The anecdotes by Mattew Weissler, Denitza Blagev, and Melanie Schoenberg were particularly helpful. The YDN's head copy editor, Dorie Boufides told a gripping tale of her lust and deceit in her San Francisco Opera internship. John Anselmi, the editor, gave me hope that there might be a job out there, even for me. What a gifted crew to put this book together.

    Book Description

An insightful and timely look at one of the hottest policy issues in education today: the initiative to move education from the public sector to the private sector. Privatizing Education is a collection of essays written by such luminaries as Arthur Levine, Martin Carnoy, Caroline Persell, Amy Stuart Wells, Geoffrey Walford, Gary Natriello, and Peter Cookson who examine one of the hottest topics in education today--the efforts by some groups and lobbyists to move education from the public to the private sector. This is occurring through tuition tax credits, vouchers, and some charter school initiatives. The volume grows out of a conference that took place at Columbia University Teachers College called "Setting the Agenda."

5 out of 5 stars Leaves a lot unresolved, but that is the point.......2003-04-03

Levin seems to fall just slightly against the "market" ideas for education, but by exploring the evidence in a domestic and international context we learn the ways in which our ideas are uniquely American and driven by an American ideology that really is not based upon education per se, but an all-pervasive notion of economy.

5 out of 5 stars Leaves a lot unresolved, but that is the point.......2003-04-03

This book reviews the evidence about so-called "choice" models of education or "free market" models and their impact on education. In the end the evidence shows nothing, but it doesn't refute anything either. What Levin shows us pretty convincingly is that, at the moment anyway, this is a debate driven by ideology rather than by evidence. No matter on which side one falls, one can interpret the evidence based upon their perspective, since the evidence is inconclusive. Like so many other debates in our society we have to move beyond the "classroom effects" and investigate what the proponents or opponents really have as their agenda. This is an excellent book simply because it is one of the first systemic reviews of the evidence as opposed to the ideological journalism with which we are most often confronted. No matter one's perspective, this book is worth reading, because it will alternately challenge and support one's views.

      Book Description

This book investigates two issues that have been slowing down the development of equity capital markets in transition economies - slow progress with privatisation and the lack of shareholder rights. Both problems are illustrated with data for the largest publicly traded Russian firms. Furthermore, two theoretical models are developed to offer insights into the nature of both problems. The principal conclusion is that partial privatisation as well as the lack of shareholder rights are likely to be only a temporary phenomenon and both problems are likely to be mitigated as the transition process advances. The book should enhance the understanding of academics as well as policy makers and practitioners of potential pitfalls in fostering the development of equity markets in transition economies as well as developing countries.

          Description:
This article reviews how the process of corporatization transforms public sector management by adopting private sector principles. It argues that corporatization, as an institutional form emerging from a second wave of neoliberalism, threatens to undermine the democratic accountability of local authorities by virtue of restructuring the state in ways that are invisible to the public yet with highly negative outcomes for low-income communities. The article provides a case study on the water sector in Cape Town, South Africa by tracing the local authority's adoption of three cost-recovery policies and their impacts on low-income households over a five year period (1997-2001). Engineers are the key agents in the promotion of cost-recovery policies in the efforts to deliver services more `efficiently'. While these officials are highly skilled professionals in dealing with the technical side of the production process, they lack the social training necessary to deal with the politics of distribution. The prominence of the neoliberal agenda in urban management can be in part be attributed to the power of the technical over the political as engineers displace politicians in the deliberations over how to deliver services to poor areas of the city.

            Book Description

Policy reform was the central theme in the development economics of the 1980s. Making it so was the patent failure of internationally aided government-driven economies to foster development -- anywhere -- in the Third World. But as the desire to reform government policies for enabling market-driven economic growth was being reborn, so was the fear that many of the poorest of the poor would be even worse off in consequence. Though free markets can guarantee increased opportunities for all, they cannot, inherently, guarantee any particular results for any particular person. The latter requires coercive authority, and impersonal markets are predicated on consent. So, the challenge was/is to design and accomplish policy reforms that would effect the transition from state-driven to market-driven economies while simultaneously improving the living standards of all citizens, including the poorest. The theme resounds in the 1990s even where it may not prevail throughout the former Soviet Union and other locales.

Indeed, the chapters prepared for this book may be even more useful today than they were upon publication in 1988. But today's reader is likely to find the book's 57 pages of give-and-take among seminar participants to be among its most fascinating parts. For example, in these pages of discussion one encounters some astounding memories of a distinguished Harvard professor: "most people today can't even remember what happened in Cuba and in China. But some of us who are as old as myself retain this wistful hope that maybe the judicious exercise of state power can achieve that phenomenon once again." In the professor's defense, he may have been receiving his information from the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. It was 1987, after all, when the CIA formally estimated that the per capita GDP of East Germany was higher than that of West Germany. In retrospect, the controversy among policymakers and academics that is captured in this book seems symptomatic of the everyday discord without which the Berlin Wall would still be standing and communism would have retained most of its adherents. Today, one may see the discontent with development policies that crescendoed in the early 1980s as a harbinger of the dissolution of the Soviet bloc and its parts. And the substantial merger of political and economic authority that resulted in statist policies throughout the Third World has the same effects wherever mercantilism is sustained, concentrating benefits among government officials and political elites while over-burdening everyone else with their costs. Thus is the same phrase -- "crony capitalism" -- used to describe the non-, even anti-market Russian economy of the 1990s as was commonly used to describe the Philippines of Ferdinand Marcos.

There may be no other book that captures so fully the controversy of the 1980s regarding whether and how to introduce market-oriented reforms in Third World countries while assuring that the poor would not become poorer. It was not imagined at the time that the debate would become equally relevant to an entirely new audience in the 1990s.

                  Book Description

In b /b b i Privatization and Equity, /i /b the contributors examine some of the problems that have arisen as a result of the change to private ownership. Increasingly, governments--particularly those in developing countries--are coming to realize that privatization can have both a very severe economic impact and also raise important problems of equity. Yet remedial actions are often inadequate and unsystematic. br br This edited collection provides an analysis of issues concerning the impact of privatization on equity. Some of the contributors identify factors which can lead to greater inequality, including changes in market structure, foreign ownership and operating policies. They also highlight the consequences of ignoring considerations of equity. In the short term, it can discredit privatization programs, and in the long term it might see them reversed. These issues are explored across a broad range of countries by contributors who have a wide experience with privatization, including policy makers, professionals and academics from developed and developing countries.

4 out of 5 stars great adult beginner book.......2007-07-24

Background: I'd studied suzuki style for all of one month before firing my teacher because I couldn't sing another nursery rhyme. I didn't read music, or understand what a key signature was, and in the 3 years since the Suzuki method, I couldn't remember which was the upstroke sign and which the down, so while I wasn't an ABSOLUTE beginner, I had more bad habits than good. I've also TRIED and failed to learn piano and guitar, so I do have SOME music theory background.

                        The Bad:
As a beginner I rely on having my neck taped so I know my finger placements. (no frets ;) ) This book does not tell you where or how to do that, so getting finger placement right if you have no one to help you will be difficult. Beyond this, I'm loving the book.

                        The Good:

1.) This has the simplest and easiest notation I've ever seen for learning to read music. I tried and failed many times before with piano and guitar books both to learn to read real musical notation, and failed every time. A week into the book and I'm already sight reading some simpler pieces. (very simple, as in 2 strings, but reading them none the less)

2.) Some of the music doesn't suck. Now, being a beginners book, you're going to be stuck with twinkle twinkle little star, just like every other beginners book, but finding "Ode to Joy" on the second lesson of actual play made my day. :)

3.) The big graph on the top of all the first lessons makes it easy to remember which strings and finger placements are which notes.

4.) you learn to find key signatures slowly and simply while you learn the scales and notes on each string. Once again, this is something I'd read about alot in other books, but in this book it was shown simply and only one example at a time as you worked your way up the strings and scales played on them, so it finally made sense to me.

In conclusion: While I'm not an absolute newbie to music, I really am to the fiddle, and after throwing away a few books I found absolutely useless and giving up on learning under a teacher who targeted 5 year olds, I've found a book I'm REALLY happy with and which is helping me make progress.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the absolute beginner.......2007-05-07

Not for the absolute beginner but a good supplement for lessons with a qualified instructor. I use this when I practice alone and find the pieces challenging but worth the effort.

4 out of 5 stars Violin at 46........2007-04-23

My children had taken violin in school when they were growning up. after they became adults their instrument sat around gathering dust. Now i've had some piano lessons years ago. My husband playes a Yamaha 6 string Bass. At 46 I've decided to learn to play my daughters violin and needed something that was simple enough and easy enough for me to enjoy the beginning process. This book is not only easy for me with the DVD and the CD that comes with the book, it is enjoyable and relaxing to listen to and watch. The only reason i gave it a 4 and not a 5 is i wish the DVD should more clearly the fingering position closer. Overall this is a very excellent way to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Good for adults!.......2006-11-26

I'm 32 years old, and decided to learn the violin as my son has been playing a few months now. I've been working through this book for almost three weeks without a teacher and I'm in the middle of lesson 8 right now. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is no instruction on how to read music or how to tune the violin.

I played a string instrument (bass violin) many years ago and did not find this a problem, you simply remember Every Good Boy Does Finely to name the lines and F A C E to name the spaces and work from there. This will not slow you down, the bass plays in a different clef and learning to "read" the music in the treble (G) clef that the violin uses took less than a week. As for tuning, buy a chromatic tuner when you purchase your instrument and ask for tuning instructions then.

This book takes an approach much better suited to adults or musicians who play other instruments in that it emphasises melodies to learn to play. You are done with open strings after lesson one and learn the notes and fingering of the A major scale in lesson two. This is a much more satisfying approach than traditional method books. Slurs are introduced in lesson 11. You'll have learned most of the notes in first position by lesson 13 and the rest by lesson 17. Lesson 22 will introduce the 4th finger.

My only complaints about the books are: 1.) the heavy emphasis on the A and E strings. This was dramatic enough to make me search through the book to find any songs that use the G string (I found a couple at lesson 13), and to make me wonder if I should write out the songs an octave or fifth lower just to practice using the D and G strings as well. (The D string is included a little more often that G)

And 2.) the lack of difficult songs. Always one to run before I can walk, I'd have liked to see a "challenge" piece every couple of lessons or so. The pieces included in the lessons here can be conquered somewhere within 1 to 3 hours of practice and, of course, become easier with repetition.

All in all, an interesting book to work through and the CD is a nice bonus.

The book was good. It came in a good amount of time and it was in good condition. i'm pretty satisfied

Never before in human history has so much cleverness been used to such stupid ends. The cleverness is in the creation and manipulation of markets, media and power; the stupid ends are in the destruction of community, responsibility, morality, art, religion and the natural world. Dumbing Down collects essays on this new phenomenon. It is an indispensable handbook for understanding the modern age.

I try to execute the latest patch, but not improved.
I think it has the possibility to exert immeasurable damage to WindowsXP.
