Book Description
For colonial administrators and the Belgian banks, the Belgian Congo was an immensely rich source of raw materials; diamonds, gold, manganese, oils, nuts, tobacco, peanuts, etc. One of the major forms of exploitation of the Congo was the effort to set up mining companies and to force Africans to work in the mines to extract these resources. Focusing on the most powerful of these mining companies—the Union Minière du Haut-Katange, John Higginson provides a detailed history of the relationship between the company and the African workers from 1907 through 1951
Book Description
Anyone interested in a better trained workforce should read this book. Well-paying jobs requiring less than a college degree are a growing sector of the economy that is often ignored. Grubb's book shows how community colleges can improve the chances of securing those jobs.

Book Description
Despite the booming economy of the 1990s, many American workers continue to report high levels of job insecurity. Wichert, Nolan, and Burchell's study reviews the large U.S. and international psychology literature on the costs and consequences of job insecurity. They conclude that job insecurity, even in the midst of general prosperity, can lead to a deterioration in physical and mental health, often with effects that are as devastating as actually experiencing unemployment.

Book Description
This volume comprises 12 chapters, each accounting for a particular aspect of worker well-being. Among the issues addressed are: employee compensation, job loss, disability, health, gender, education, contract negotiation, and macroeconomic labor policy. The volume provides answers to a number of important questions. For example, why do smaller, newer companies better match CEO pay to profits than old, established corporations? Which demographic groups are most prone to job losses? What does marital status have to do with the glass ceiling? Does retiring from work increase one's mental health? Does domestic violence drive women to work more? Do higher educational subsidies lead to more schooling than larger educational rates of return? In short, the volume addresses a number of important policy-related research issues on worker well-being facing labor economists today.

Do YOU have what it takes to be a star? Simon Cowell reveals the answer and takes you behind the scenes of American Idol in this wickedly entertaining tell-all.
Since the debut of American Idol, puckish Brit judge Simon Cowell has become America’s most notorious critic—not only on account of his incredible instinct for spotting the next breakout musical stars, but for his hilarious, shockingly candid repartee with everyone who crosses his path. Now, true to form, he holds nothing back, offering you a backstage pass to America’s hottest show—the highlights, the gossip, the contestants who blew their chances—and takes you on a whirlwind tour of the music business while sharing his own insider opinions, on everything.
From his days in the mailroom at EMI Records to the creation of American Idol, Simon has always had a knack for judging talent—and for being center stage. Here, he tells the rollicking stories of his first insult (to his mother), his first music criticism (to first-grade teacher Mrs. Prigg), and his first image makeover (on his unfortunate younger brother). And of course, the side-splitting backstory of the birth of American Idol—and all the dreadful auditions, bad hair days, judges’ squabbles, juicy rumors, surprise triumphs, and #1 singles that followed.
With his trademark wit and brutal honesty, Simon delivers the real dish on: Who gave the best and worst performances on the show? What really goes on between the three judges (and what was it like to kiss Paula Abdul)? Who were the biggest divas when the cameras weren’t rolling? And, if you’re an aspiring Justin or J.Lo, you’ll also learn the trade secrets that only Simon knows: how to develop an image and make the most of your talent, how to find an agent or manager, how to nail an audition, and—should you be so lucky to make it to the top—how to stretch your 15 minutes into a career.
Packed with razor-sharp insights into music, the fame game, and pop-music powerhouses from the Beatles to Britney Spears, I Don’t Mean to Be Rude, But…is your ticket inside American Idol, and a highly amusing, no-holds-barred look at what it takes to make it big.
Customer Reviews:
Simon Cowell : Witty, Talented, and Fantastically Egotistical........2007-01-26
I truly have enjoyed the American Idol judge's book, I hope he writes some more books about the music industry and the show. Simon is very music business savvy, and not only proves his creditability in this book, but entertains readers with his wit and his backstage gossip! I loved it, and LOVE Simon!
Interesting Man, Interesting Book.......2006-04-20
I've always been a fan of Mr. Cowell for his brutal honesty and offbeat charm. Still, his book surprised me with its depth and clarity. It's easy to see he has a brilliant knack for the music business as well as an enlightened view of life in general. Cowell describes his childhood in England and rise to the top in an entertaining, witty way, while paying heed to Idol fans by telling humorous behind-the-scenes stories. This book is an informative and enjoyable read for anyone - who knew Simon Cowell was such a fascinating writer?
" I Don't Mean to be Rude But This is a Great Book" .......2006-02-09
Enter Simon Cowell. He's a fashon critic who always has to be "honest" and sincere. You do have to feel for Simon though. Putting up with William Hung is pretty hard to do. Simon does many eight things in this book though. He insults Madonna, Michael Jackson etc. I liked his true love section especially P. Diddy and Himself and Michael jackson and anyone. I liked his Idol chapters and his tips to succeed.
Fascinating and Funny.......2005-06-22
I read this book as a newcomer to American Idol watching back in Season 3. I found it a fascinating introduction to both the world of American Idol and the music industry. In fact, I found that much of Simon Cowell's advice and insight could probably be applied to show business in general. I thought it was interesting that his philosophy seems to often be that it is better to be "cruel to be kind." After reading the book, I certainly felt I had a much better understanding of him, of the show, and of how the music industry works.
But, of course, the fun part of the book were all of the behind-the-scenes shenanigans and "gossip" that he shared. Since I didn't begin watching AI until the third season, I enjoyed catching up vicariously this way. Some of the anecdotes about Randy and Paula and Ryan were a hoot.
I found Cowell's writing style engaging and witty. It held my interest throughout and was very easy to read. I recommend it highly, especially, of course, for fans of the series.
Rudeness is part of our common lives. It's called mediocrity.......2005-06-13
This is a "clumsy" book. My first impression was that it was written to deliver inconspicuously hidden messages to his irreverent friends. The next impression, as I sifted through his scruffy childhood, was that he did not possess any impressionable talent. Instead, he created a delusional rationale for writing such a book in the first place.
I watched American Idol on television and was intrigued by Simon Cowell. I purchased the book to gain a better understanding about him, the celebrity industry, and his insightful `dynamo' concepts. Unfortunately, all I encountered throughout the book was a rambling hypocrite who, in the end, chastised everyone for pursuing celebrity status unless they were fortunate enough to be miraculously chosen by him.
To be fair, American Idol is pure entertainment. Judging talent on time constraints and lurid subjectivity is the type of medium that will thrive in the spotlight. Millions devour the mindless intrigue.
I have seen incredible performances. But those recitals live beyond the winds of subjectivity even when those artists display eccentric personalities, vitriolic egos...and being in the right place at the right time.
One unfortunate theme oozing through Simon Crowell is his decision to export his ugly behavior from Britain to America. Perhaps it was already here, waiting for him and the timing could not have been more perfect since America must tolerate greedy politicians / corporations today with their ugly voter accountability / customer service.
I am disheartened by the fact that Simon Cowell did not spend more time focusing on his talent and business prowess. It is undecided whether he a creative genius. Unfortunately, that is the theme for a better book for a more civilized world.
Customer Reviews:
CALLING ALL HARD CORE "AMERICAN IDOL" FANS... .......2006-06-07
If one is an insatiable, hard core fan of the "American Idol" show, then this book is for you. It reads in Simon Cowell's voice, as it has the same tart, waspish tone he uses on the show. He tells it like it is. The book is full of behind the scenes dish about the show, its contestants, and its judges. It is brought to the reader by the ultimate insider, Simon Cowell.
The author gives a brief overview of his life, beginning when he was young and growing up in England. He recounts how he got involved in the music industry and details his rise to the top of his field, becoming one of the most in demand music impresarios the world over. The book further details how this intrepid Brit's rise to fame and fortune eventually led to the creation of the British hit show, "Pop Idol", which ultimately led to the creation of the American version. Believe it or not, "American Idol" was a hard sell, until the folks at Fox came into the picture. The rest is history.
Those who love the "American Idol" show and simply cannot get enough, this strangely compelling book will fill that emptiness with a lot of backstage gossip about the show's first season and everyone associated with it. Some of it will surprise you. One thing is for sure, this breezy little book will keep the reader turning its pages. If one is not a rabid "American Idol" fan, deduct at least one star from my rating and proceed at your own risk.

Book Description
The geographical imagination is increasingly recognized as a critical component in contemporary American culture. In this original, interdisciplinary study, Brian Jarvis offers an examination of "new geography" and "mapping the boy," alongside a critique of dominant definitions of postmodernism. Postmodern Cartographies explores spatial representation in a range of texts from social sciences, prose fiction and cinema. It surveys the geography of post-industrial society as advance in the work of Daniel Bell, Marshal McLuhan and Jean Baudrillard; analyzes representations of space in novels by Thomas Pynchon, Paul Auster, Jayne Anne Phillips and Toni Morrison; and, in a key third section, examines sexual politics and body images in science fiction cinema and the films of David Lynch. Jarvis demonstrates an essential continuity between the geographical imagination expressed in so-called postmodern culture and that evident in previous phases in the history of spatial representation.

Book Description
You've probably heard the buzz about Eclipse, the powerful open source platform that gives Java developers a new way to approach development projects. It's like a shiny new car--no longer content to just admire Eclipse, you're now itching to get in and drive. Eclipse is to Java developers what Visual Studio is to .NET developers--it's an integrated development environment (IDE) that combines a code editor, compiler, debugger, text editor, graphical user interface (GUI) builder, and other components into a single, user-friendly application. It provides a solid foundation that enables Java developers to construct and run integrated software-development tools for web development, application design, modeling, performance, testing, and much more. As with any extensive programming tool, however, there's a lot to learn. And there s no better guy than well-known Java expert Steve Holzner to teach you. An award-winning and best-selling author who has been writing about Java topics since the language first appeared, Holzner delivers just the kind of targeted, practical, everyday knowledge you need to hone your mastery of Eclipse. Perfect as a companion to an Eclipse programming tutorial (such as Holzner's own Eclipse, O'Reilly, April 2004) or an ideal stand-alone for all those developers who either don't want or don't need the tutorial approach, the Eclipse Cookbook contains task-oriented recipes for more than 800 situations you may encounter while using this new Java platform--from deploying a web application automatically to reverse engineering compiled code, from re-naming all references to a class across multiple packages to initializing the SWT JNI libraries. Each recipe in the ever-popular and utterly practical problem-solution-discussion format for O'Reilly cookbooks contains a clear and thorough description of the problem, a brief but complete discussion of a solution, and in-action examples illustrating that solution. The Eclipse Cookbook will satiate Java programmers at all levels who are ready to go beyond tutorials--far beyond writing plug-ins and extensions--and actually use the powerful and convenient Eclipse day to day.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for those use to simpler editors.......2005-04-07
I was use to using a much simpler editor for writing Java code. This book did a very good job helping with learning how to use Eclipse.
too much padding.......2005-01-13
The book has some useful information, but does not
go beyond the very basic. In light of this, it is
annoying that so much space is taken up with repeated
samples of the same code, and with more screen shots
than are needed. I've encountered this before in one
of Mr. Holzner's books (XML Complete), and I have to
wonder if this is done to pad the book to a length
that justifies the cost.
Handy Starters' Reference to Eclipse.......2004-12-05
After getting used to the fundamentals of the Java programming language, a versatile integrated development environment like Eclipse would bring developers to next level of productivity, and Eclipse Cookbook is handy for the start. Readers are guided step-by-step with numerous illustrations about its support for tasks from creating packages, classes, methods to refactoring, and debugging. The book demonstrates Eclipse 2.1.2 with the difference of early release of version 3.0 being mentioned. Now when versions 3.0.1 and 3.1M are readily available, you might need to resort to online help for the exact updated steps. You will find the use of application programming interface of platform dependent SWT for building GUI with both AWT and Swing being mixed. However, it gets nothing to do with the drag-and-drop style of building graphical components. Web development is included but too concise. No elaborated features like performance profiling or modeling tool of round-trip development are described. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to introduce to target audience with various commonly referred plug-ins on tasks like integrating with different kinds of version control, validating XML, modeling UML, and J2EE support.
Somewhat basic for a cookbook..........2004-10-04
A recent addition to my Eclipse library has been Eclipse Cookbook by Steve Holzner (O'Reilly). It works well for my level of expertise at the package, but experienced users might find it lacking...
Chapter list: Basic Skills; Using Eclipse; Java Development; Refactoring, Building, and Launching; Testing and Debugging; Using Eclipse in Teams; Eclipse and Ant; SWT: Text, Buttons, Lists and Nonretangular Windows; SWT: Dialogs, Toolbars, Menus, and More; SWT: Coolbars, Tab Folders; Trees, and Browsers; JSP, Servlets, and Eclipse; Creating Plug-ins: Extension Points, Actions, and Menus; Creating Plug-ins: Wizards, Editors, and Views; Index
Like all O'Reilly cookbooks, this follows the standard formula. A problem is presented, a short two or three line solution is given, and then there's a discussion and fuller explanation of the answer. There are plenty of screen shots and coding examples to help you through each of the recipes.
Overall, the book will benefit new and intermediate users. The author covers quite a few of the features of Eclipse that make it so powerful, like refactoring, running the debugger, and other various tasks. You may know that these exist but not know how to use them, or you just may be ignorant of the fact that they even exist. In that sense, it's really good. The SWT portion seems to be more centered on programming with Eclipse as a secondary focus. Maybe because it's because I don't do SWT development, but it just seemed to be a bit out of place. The material also seems to be pretty basic for a cookbook. Usually the recipes are more beyond the basics and get into things that aren't quite as intuitive as they might be.
This will help me get up to speed on Eclipse, and I do like the book. I'm just not sure it's for everyone...
Very good reference for Eclipse........2004-09-28
Prof. Steve Holzner is an authority in Java and has many books to his credit. Prof. Holzner's
expertise and patience is well brought in this book with adequate explanation of the different aspects
of Eclipse.
The book is full of screen prints that adequately explain how the screen would look while using the
built-in features of eclipse. the author has taken the time to take different scenarios and ways to
work around the different problems encountered while using the tool to develop Java applications. to
demonstrate some of the features, the author debugs a sample program and identifies the errors
commonly encountered and ways to resolve the errors.
as mentioned at the beginning book, this book does not intend to teach programming aspects of Java but
the features and the nuances built in the tool. The author has taken the time to explain how the
tool integrates with ANT and TOMCAT.
although this book was written with Eclipse 2.x, the author indicates the features that would be built
in eclipse 3.x. the author's style is simple and straight to the point. it is a well written book
and an excellent reference on eclipse 3.0. the book has earned a place in my shelf.
