OK for tech exams - but there are some errors in it .......2007-09-30

Good book I bought to catch up on some of the questions you always get, when you have oral exams, and want to explain something difficult in a simple way - this book does the trick.
But, lookout for the errors - not all of the information is totally correct - when you simplify things, often the knowledge gets so compressed, that errors are bound to occur.

All pilots must have such a book like this one. Although it's main purpose is to help in Job's interviews it's also a very good tool to review many topics we don't use to view since our private and comercial pilot's classes. I just would like to see more illustrations and it needs a few corrections too.

Marvellous edition with tons of technical questions nicely ordered by topic. A must have for every (commercial or private) pilot even for people not looking to go on interview straight-away, but just want to brush up their knowledge.

3 remarks:
- I have to agree with the previous reviews on the fact that there are plenty of errors, the least the author/publisher could do, is build a list with errata.
- some more illustrations would have been nice - but it is no reason for not buying this book
- pitty there's no CD with a quiz of the covered questions, but then again: it's a book (not software).

No PeopleSoft questions in this book.......2004-04-24

No peoplesoft like the editorial review claims. Plus, this book has very little useful information about interviewing. It's just a bunch of technical questions organized by chapter. The Oracle questions are out of date, for version 8i which was released in 1999. Don't get this book for help on how to interview. Get "Ace the IT job interview". I am glad I only paid $3 for this. It is barely worth that.

Stay away from this book.......2003-01-05

I have a solid background in C/C++ and I was hoping to fill in some gaps in other areas with this book. Unfortunately, given the poor quaility of the C/C++ information (and the sometimes-silly stuff in the "how to interview" section), I really don't trust what's in the rest of the volume.

The C/C++ chapter is divided into "beginner", "intermediate", and "advanced" sections. Instead, they should be labeled "unbelievably trivial", "very trivial", and "trivial". Even worse, much of the information is presented in a misleading or incorrect fashion. I suppose this is to be expected, given that the main credentials of the person who wrote the C/C++ section are a music degree and the ability to play the string bass.

If I were giving an interview and I heard a candidate parroting the C/C++ answers in this book, I would promptly show him/her to the door.

Instead, get a copy of: "Programming Interviews Exposed" by Mongan and Suojanen.

I have no idea about Mainframe, Cisco etc sections.

Only ASP section is worth reading with a comprehensive coverage of the topic.

Poor Editing.......2001-08-10

The book is filled with valuable information but you generally have to read the answers, and sometimes the questions, at least twice because the book is poorly written. It's as if nobody took the time to proofread - which is pretty sad for a FOURTH edition. Even the entries that are well thought out tend to be filled with sentence fragments and clauses, making it very difficult to read and more importantly, COMPREHEND! I'm no English professor but I can recognize when something can be written more clearly.

What this book is not!.......2000-11-10

The Employment Guide for The Military,Intelligence and Special Operations Communities by Mr. Merritt; falls very short in assisting SOF personnel with job hunting. This book is primarily for the techno/crypto personnel(NSA or NRO types) rather than the SOF operaters on the ground. The only thing applicable to the operator utilizing this book is possibly their experience with SR missions. This book does not assist the SOF operators out there looking for DA, UW,CA or FID related assignments or jobs. Again the book falls very short for SOF personnel - very low-speed/high-drag!

This book provides little help for people with a SOF background (I cannot speak on the Military Intelligence side of the house). It is mainly a primer on how to write a resume, and contains little helpful information about jobs available in the civilian world. Almost all of the contacts listed are some type of software/computer/communications company. In fact, I thought the title should be changed to "Employment guide for personnel in the electronics, communication, or computer MOS's". I was hoping to find security or consulting contacts that I had not previously known, but even the most basic contacts (such as Brown and Root or Dynacorps) were not listed. The only contact listed for anyone with strictly SOF experience is MPRI. The rest are all some type of crypto/commo/aerospace stuff. The only reason to buy this book is for the contact information, and it fails in this area. There are better books on resume writing on the market. My advice: shop elswhere.

A Great Resource.......2000-03-24

This book is a one of a kind resource for people with a Military Intelligence or Special Operations background. I am currently using this guide to develop a resume/cover letter, network with old collegues and make contact with prospective employers. This book contains lists of key government agencies, defense contractors and headhunter agencies that are looking for people with SOF/MI skills. If you are looking to market your unique skills as a civilian, this is the guide for you.

Drawing on unpublished archival material, this book provides the first complete account of the Polish miners' union in the Ruhr and places it in the wider context of the German labor movement, from the pre-World War I mass strikes to the dramatic post-war events which eventually saw its dissolution. The author persuasively argues that the union's demise does not signal an inherent contradiction between national and social solidarity. Rather, the conflict between these two ideals lies chiefly in the pre-war and post-war history of the Polish Trade Union. Tractor Jokes Plow Deep Smile Furrows!.......2003-07-04

My father's family grew up on a farm in central Illinois where they raised corn, soybeans, cows and pigs. Naturally, one of the joys of being a youngster was to visit our grandfather and to crawl all over the farm equipment. While there, I remember a particular brand of humor that was both drier and more restrained than the humor I was used to in Southern California. Reading 101 Uses for an Old John Deere brought back all of those wonderful experiences for me.

The book is a handy size to carry around, so you can share the good humor inside its pages with those you meet.

this day by day historical look at the kinks' touring and recording dates is thoroughly researched to the best of the author's ability. the book provides interesting and fascinating glimpse into not only the music of the group but also the personalities and attitudes of its members, especially ray davies, one of the greatest lyricists in rock history. the kinks are probably the most underrated of the great british invasion bands, at least on american shores, and certainly one of the most interesting, and this work will give fans and readers hours of enjoyment, as well as inform them about quite a few facts that they didn't previously know.

Excellent Review of Kinks History.......2004-02-18

This is a terrific account of the Kinks history from the early 1960's up to the later 90's. Instead of merely listing set lists from each tour, Doug Hinman researchs and documents exactly what was going on with the Kinks at each point in time. The most famous Ray and Dave Davies fights are included of course, but there is much more to the Kinks than just that. Each year lists the album, singles, how the commercial success or lack of affected the band, the management, the concert crowds, etc. It does not pull any punches in listing dissapointing crowds during many years or concerts that were cancelled for various reasons. Full accounts of interactions with The Beatles, The Who and other bands they've shared bills with are also included. A terrific read for the Kinks fan. I enjoyed it immensly.

This book is amazing. Trying to get the whereabouts together for a period of 35 years from one of the most erratic bands ever. It took 18 years of researching, collecting data in all corners of the world to get this book done. The Kinks did things on a spur of the moment, unlike The Beatles' or The Rolling Stones' management, who were better organized and as a result the information can be drawn from the source. Information on The Kinks had to be found in numerous archives, libraries and fans' scrapbooks. I think Doug Hinman would have thought twice before starting if you had told him this 20 years ago!
Hinman's book is flooding over with dates, facts and information about The Kinks for a period of 35 years. There are photos in this book that I had never seen before, and I've been through quite a few books on The Kinks.
The best Kinks book in 15 years. No question about it!

Not just for newsletters!!.......2005-09-28

This book explains everything you would need to know about creating a newsletter in Adobe Indesign. But the principles you learn in this book can be applied well beyond just newsletters. This book takes you from the beginning and shows you how to layout a newsletter.

This is one of the best books I've seen for explaining now to do "graphic design" to non "graphic designer". Everything is covered. What fonts to use, what colors to use, as well as some basic design elements that may not be so obvious. The way this book describes fonts is a perfect example. I've seen many books that list the "rules" for choosing fonts and pretty much end by saying you can use "anything with anything" so long as it looks good. I am not a graphic artist, so the "so long as it looks good" can be a problem. This book speaks in very precise terms. It tells you which fonts they suggest you use.

All of the pages of the book are published in full color. This allows you to see exactly what you should be creating in the program.

If you are new to InDesign and need to quickly come up to speed to create newsletters or other publications, this book is a great starting point.

I could not have been happier with this book........2004-10-20

"Creating a Newsletter in InDesign" is a Visual Quick Project Book published by Peachpit Press. It is authored by Katrin Straub and Torsten Buck. I highly recommend it as a book which should be in the hands of any beginner with no background in graphic design or page layout who takes on a project for the first time, like yours truly, of doing a Newsletter that can "raise the bar" in communications in, for example, a family, school, club, or a small business. "Creating a Newsletter in InDesign" will have you fairly rapidly becoming joyfully comfortable with the current Adobe® InDesign cs program. The book has both a Contents and an Index that makes items of your interest, a quick find. It is written in a style allowing for easy comprehension and is liberally peppered with accompanying pictures and diagrams. The book is colorful and bright and uses a font in a style and size which makes it easy to read. The book walks one through a project for those who have the luxury of more time to come up to speed.
I am finding the book useful to fine tune what I am doing in the Apple Bits. I trust that I will continue to use it as I develop an on-going style and presentation.
