Book Description
More than seventy years since the Bolsheviks came to power, there is still no comprehensive study of workers' activism in history's first successful workers' revolution. Strikes and Revolution in Russia, 1917 is the first effort in any language to explore this issue in both quantitative and qualitative terms and to relate strikes to the broader processes of Russia's revolutionary transformation. Diane Koenker and William Rosenberg not only provide a new basis for understanding essential elements of Russia's social and political history in this critical period but also make a strong contribution to the literature on European labor movements. Using statistical techniques, but without letting methodology dominate their discussion, the authors examine such major problems as the mobilization of labor and management, factory relations, perceptions, the formation of social identities, and the relationship between labor protest and politics in 1917. They challenge common assumptions by showing that much strike activity in 1917 can be understood as routine, but they are also able to demonstrate how the character of strikes began to change and why.

Book Description
This work challenges the view, widely held among historians of the Bolshevik revolution, that the upsurge of labour unrest of 1920-22 was the result of the appalling living conditions caused by the Civil War, had little significant content and was largely a sideshow to the huge conflict between the Bolsheviks and the peasants.
Based on a wide reading of the contemporary Soviet press, archive sources and first-hand accounts by Bolsheviks and non-Bolsheviks, this work shows how rank and file opposition to the leadership in the Bolshevik-dominated trade unions grew, and how support for non-Bolshevik trade unions and political parties developed fast.

Named the #1 Rock Biography of All Time in The New Book of Rock Lists
Drawing from interviews conducted before Marvin Gaye's death, acclaimed music writer David Ritz has created a full-scale portrait of the brilliant but tormented artist. With a cast of characters that includes Diana Ross, Berry Gordy, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder, this intimate biography is a definitive and enduring look at the man who embodied the very essence of the word soul.
Customer Reviews:
sad.......2007-09-26
i had heard of this book, but never gotten around to reading it. i had heard of bits of mr. gaye's life, but never learned more. i believe in the end i am happy i finally read it. though it is sad. a tormented soul, in part because divided. most troubled. torn and hurt. confused and frustrated.
i liked the way the writer navigates through time, catching you off guard with a u-turn in a decade. and just when you start to wonder how it will tie together, you're there, tightly parked along the curb.
so; no happy read, but insightful and educational. hard to put down. like mr. gaye's best music.
i wound up a bit divided myself for will i be able to experience the music seperated from its context? do i need to?
Fascinating. Compelling. Absurd........2007-09-05
This book is necessary for anyone whose ever wanted to know the way Marvin Gaye's mind ticked. David Ritz was one of Marvin's closest friends until approximately 2 years before his death. The author co-wrote, despite not receiving credit from Gaye, "Sexual Healing" and songs for Smokey Robinson and The Isley Brothers. Although, Marvin was admittedly blazed throughout most of the interviews with Ritz, he offers compelling candor. Gaye's profoundly paranoid sense of self and business/fame becomes nearly absurd towards the last third of the book. You may find it hard to conjure up tears or sympathy for a man who knew how to fix his behavior, but refused to. However, you also learn that Marvin was a product of his father, who regularly beat Marvin and was undeniably jealous of his famous son.
In the end you'll be grateful you read this entertaining book.
Dividided Soul: Life of Marvin Gaye.......2007-07-20
This is an oustanding book. I couldn't put it down. It's sad though to learn how mentally and emotionally disturbed Marvin really was. It's a must read for all Marvin Gaye fans.
Marvin's Troubled Career starts right here.......2004-12-30
Marvin had a lotta history going aside him when this book came after a year he died (the year I was born 1984). The only part interest me is that he had the same feeling wearing women's clothing like his father did when he was recalling back then. 2 me I had the same feature dressing like that like on Mrs. Doubtfire or Tootsie or whatever. Anyway as I was calling he did face a life-and-death situation on where he facing a decision of living the good life vs. the bad life. Or else I would say the resurrection. Marvin was more of a martyr or saved or unsaved Christian thats making it happen. For those that knew him and never read his book or listen to his music, should definitely know the details behind this man. As you know he's like a mentor to me whom I called an inspiration. I 'preciate the good success he had and may his senses still be with him forever. Even tho he's gone now as we know he was shot to death by his father Marvin Sr on April 1, 1984, a day be4 his 45th birthday (something I'll never forget), his legacy and music still lives between us. Sometimes we had to pray and wonder what God has in us in the near future. Look at right now, we lost a lot of music greats that grew between us, for example, Rick James, Barry White, Ray Charles, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Phyllis Hyman, Grover Washington, Jr., 2Pac, Biggie, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of TLC, Aaliyah, Jam Master Jay, Curtis Mayfield, Russell "ODB or Dirt McGirt" Jones, you name it. Like look what they left before they been around. I know a lot of people are worrying that there not here anymore. Praise God. As you know, they not coming back no more, they're still in peace w/ God making sure there spirits, legacies, and memories would never be forgotten. This is something u should watch for when you're living the glamourest life or spirit-filled life. Whether u'll be around or not, you know God always be w/ you no matter what, he'll still be there to protect u and guide u. Yeah I read this book completely and I'll read it to the fullest until I'm dead and gone in the future. I'm 'specially a musician too where I play different instruments which I experiemented while growing up the piano, keyboard, organ, percussion, recorder, guitar, drums, trumpet (which is my 1st love), trombone, a lil bit of the saxophone and flute of course, french horn, euphonium, valve trombone, flugelhorn, etc. I wish MArvin was here to see me play but I'll let him know I still have love and faith for him just like I do with my mom and dad who are an inspiration to me. I recommend you should buy this book and check out other books I read like Mase's memoir, Chet Baker's memoir, Nelson George's Hip-Hop America, Quincy Jones' memoir, Allison Hobbs' Insatiable, Wayne Normis' The Last Street Fighter, and Trouble Man: The Life and Death of Marvin Gaye by Steve Turner. Yeah Marvin would live on in my hearts and hopefully years 2 come. Wish his family would be proud if I see this. Rest in Peace, Marvin Gaye, your spirit lives on in us.
WOW!.......2003-06-17
Just reading this book is enough to make you laugh, cry, and feel for this man. Marvin was an innovator, way ahead of his time. He let us come into his life and live it with him. You read about his inspirations for his 1970s albums (Let's Get It On, I Want You, What's Going On?). You read about his pain, his triumphs, his insecurities. He was a human being as well as an artist. He is truly missed.
Book Description
When The Cinema, or The Imaginary Man first appeared in 1956, the movies and the moviegoing experience were generally not regarded as worthy of serious scholarly consideration. Yet, French critic and social theorist Edgar Morin perceived in the cinema a complex phenomenon capable of illuminating fundamental truths about thought, imagination, and human nature - which allowed him to connect the mythic universe of gods and spirits present within the most primitive societies to the hyperreality emanating from the images projected on the screen. Now making its English-language debut, this audacious, provocative work draws on insights from poets, filmmakers, anthropologists, and philosophers to restore to the cinema the sense of magic first enjoyed at the dawn of the medium. Morin's inquiry follows two veins of investigation. The first focuses on the cinematic image as the nexus between the real and the imaginary; the second examines the cinema's re-creation of the archaic universe of doubles and ghosts and its power to possess, to bewitch, to nourish dreams, desires, and aspirations. "We experience the cinema in a state of double consciousness," Morin writes, "an astonishing phenomenon where the illusion of reality is inseparable from the awareness that it is really an illusion."

Customer Reviews:
Why, oh why, did I waste my money on this?.......1999-12-05
I wish I'd bought the Bradygames book first. This book was totally inaccurate; it was obviously based on the Japanese game. Sell it in Japan, then, because we don't need it here. What few maps there were were terrible, and there was no real walkthrough. He just told you what to do in each zone, and they weren't even in any discernible order! There were no special item lists whatsoever, or much help on where to find them (not that that would have helped, since he gave all the wrong names for the items). I liked how he described one set of dialogue as "Richter's girlfriend says something that sounds important." Obviously, he never played the American version. A picture is worth a thousand words, and there were so painfully few pictures that it became a chore to look up something in the strategy guide. That makes this book almost totally worthless. Zero stars.
Just doesn't work out........1999-07-15
Okay, lot of problems kept me from buying this one.
1: What little pictures there are are black and white. 2: The details barely skim the surface. It doesn't do the game any justice. 3: It tells you how to beat the game. Period. It doesn't tell you how and where to find every item, what every monster looks like and is located, and tells you nothing about the entire second quest of the game (Richter). 4: The strategy guide basically ruins the feel of Castlevania by telling you exactly where to go and then go there, thus beating the game as fast as you can. It says nothing about 'side-quests', that is, little extras they put in the game. I've clocked in at over 50 hours on this game alone, because the main idea in Castlevania is to EXPLORE and try out new things, not run through, win, and throw the game in the closet. Overall, a disappointment.
It was very helpful.......1999-05-03
It helped me get alot of the secrets in the game. And it gave me good ways to defeat some of the enemies.

Tools and Textbook...too many errors.......2007-04-19
This book was used for an intermediate forensics course and it was a terrible combination. I don't know if the authors bothered to validate their procedures with the tools, but neither worked well. We spent almost as much time trying to get the tools to work as we did actually performing investigations. Not only that, but the answers to some of the problems were incorrect. Bad choice of textbook for a college course !
It is introduction to Computer Forensics.......2006-08-27
This is a textbook for computer forensics. It should be introduction to computer forensics. The book discuss overview of procedures and expectations of a computer forensic investigator. The technical sections in the book uses software to find information. Unfortunately, this information is basic and review for computer nerds.
THIS IS AN UPDATE. I just finished using this book for my class. We went through all 14 chapters: the CD is missing files, and the documentation is not in-sync with the demo software. The school contacted Course and Course is still trying to figure it out (maybe version 3). I am not a legal expert so I don't know if the procedures are right, but they made sense. The book focus is the process of making the extracted information legal. All the software is either demo or limited version. Majority of the projects uses Drivespy which function uses DOS (Win 9x). Sorry, you are out-of-luck if you don't have Win 9x computer. They have limited version of Forsenics Toolkit that works on XP, but the book only uses on a few projects.
Wrong Book to use for College Course!.......2006-04-02
College Professors Listen Up! This is not the book to use for teaching Computer Forensics and Investigation. I am a student in a graduate course for Computer Forensics. The fact that this book uses strictly commercial software for all the exercises is sad. Especially since there are many Open Source tools available that can be used to conduct Computer Forensics. The software included with this book requires that the buyer obtain a license from the vendor, before the software can be used. Then the license is only good for 120 days. This is not fair to the buyer especially for students, who usually have no intent of keeping the book past the end of the semester. It would be better to use a book for the class that the students would find worth keeping for the long term. Also, a book that uses Open Source tools for the examples/exercises, would provide much more value to the students. A much better book to use would be 'Incident Response and Computer Forensics, 2nd Ed' by Chri Prosise, Kevin Mandia and Matt Pepe. If this book does not suite you, then I am sure that you can find another book to use.
This book is better than the previous edition, but there are still problems with the information. As another student posted about a case project. The evidence proved the employee innocent. This is just the beginning of other problems that you will find with the book.
Buy at your own risk!
Only read it a little.......2006-03-24
I am a complete novice at computer forensics (CF). I am taking a technical college course in CF for which this was the required textbook as I write this. I wrote this review so Amazon would stop pestering me with emails asking me to write this review. I haven't finished the course or the book yet but in the absence of any other reviews maybe my experience will help others.
So far I am through chapter 5. The book seems pretty good except for a couple of minor issues. Many CF software such as Drivespy requires commands entered from the DOS command line. The way the DOS commands are printed in the book it can be hard to tell where spaces are required in a given command, with the result that sometimes we were unable to type the commands correctly, which meant that the commands would not execute. It took us some experimenting to figure out the correct command, since like many computer users, we are not that familiar with DOS anymore.
Also, there is a sample problem in chapter 4 I believe involving processing a disk to recover information supplied by the writers of the book about whether a fictitious employee was operating a business on company time. The information we recovered was supposed to confirm that the employee was doing so, but the information we actually recovered indicated that he was not, so we aren't sure what that was supposed to mean.
My course instructor was very enthusiastic about this book, but she is a novice at instructing CF courses as well. I hope that this helps anyone interested in the book and stops Amazon from sending me those emails. When I finish the course I will try to post a further review.
Great book........2006-02-18
The book explains in good detail about computer forensics and investigations. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to look into this field of study.
Book Description
Many excellent hardware and software products exist to protect our data communications sytems, but security threats dictate that they must be further enhanced. Many laws implemented during the past 15 years have provided law enforcement with more teeth to take a bite out of cyber crime, but there is still a need for individuals who know how to investigate computer network security incidents. Organizations demand experts with both investigative talents and a technical knowledge of how cyberspace really works. Cyber Crime Investigator's Field Guide, Second Edition provides the investigative framework that needs to be followed, along with information about how cyberspace works and the tools that reveal the who, what, when, where, why, and how in the investigation of cyber crime. This volume offers a valuable Q&A by subject area, an extensive overview of recommended reference materials, and a detailed case study. Appendices highlight attack signatures, UNIX/Linux commands, Cisco PIX commands, port numbers targeted by trojan horses, and more.

An Extremely Practical No-Nonsense Hard Hitting CF Book!.......2006-07-12
I have over 100 books in my library dealing with information security, communication systems design, criminal investigations, penetration testing (hacking), and computer crime investigation (cyber forensics) but this book leads the pack. I've actually purchased several for my friends who work in cyber forensics at the local/state/federal levels in law enforcement and those who work in corporate America. This book is soooo good because it covers what REALLY happens out in the field during a computer crime investigation (including entire chapters on what to bring, how to plan, who to work with, etc). Also included are entire chapters dedicated to various tools and step by step instructions on how to use them. I've done my research and Bruce Middleton (the author) has been in the computer crime field for decades working forensics investigations before it was even called forensics. He began is investigative work with computers back in the early 70's with NSA and DoD. Today he is still an outstanding writer, speaker and investigator in the forensics world, working with corporations, government agencies, law enforcement, and our military. This book is hard hitting and really tells it like it is. Great for both novices and those with experience.
